 Welcome to the Annual Report of Devils Care 2 Our Commitment Dear Fellow New Jerseyans: As a State, we have never been more strong than now as we rebuild from the damage caused by Superstorm Sandy. Though the charitable foundaAon of the New Jersey Devils and PrudenAal Center, Devils Care, we have tried to help ease our fellow New Jerseyans suffering though the donaAon of food, clothing, blankets and money to the Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund founded by First Lady Mary Pat ChrisAe. Our fans have been instrumental in helping our efforts to bolster those who needed help in the aJermath of the storm. The enAre Devils and PrudenAal Center family strongly believes that our State is indeed Stronger than the Storm. Devils Care was founded to support “Jersey’s Team” and is assisted by our dedicated fans who share a love for New Jersey. On the following pages you will learn about the many programs we support that bring out the best in our State. Throughout the year, they support many causes including school, community and hospital visits and local charitable fundraisers. q The New Jersey Devils conAnue to support the Newark Public School Honor Roll Program by rewarding high-­‐
achieving students. q Devils Care provides deeply discounted Ackets to support the Mayor’s Pass. These vouchers are distributed throughout Newark, making thousands of Ackets to events available over the course of the year. q PrudenAal Center provides assistance and event space for local non-­‐profits to host fundraising events, community outreach iniAaAves and meeAngs. 4 What We Do q The New Jersey Devils and PrudenAal Center work with local and statewide community organizaAons to support important programs that include aid to children, health and wellness, educaAon, and hockey development. q In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, the New Jersey Devils and PrudenAal Center spearheaded a number of different relief efforts including charity hockey games to raise funds, food and clothing donaAons. q The New Jersey Devils are commiMed to youth hockey through the Street Devils programs and grassroots iniAaAves like Hockey In Newark. Jersey’s Team, Jersey Strong 5 Superstorm Sandy Relief Efforts Superstorm Sandy leJ a path of destrucAon in its wake and the Devils Care jumped into acAon immediately with their relief efforts. PrudenAal Center and the Devils donated over 2,000 pounds of food, 6,700 blankets and towels plus 2,400 pieces of clothing to different relief organizaAons throughout New Jersey including the State of New Jersey’s aid distribuAon center at Monmouth Racetrack. Jersey’s Team also hosted a Hurricane Sandy Central page, www.newjerseydevils.com/jerseystrong which helped direct fans to Amely informaAon regarding Sandy relief efforts and cleanups. NJ Devil, seen here with Governor ChrisAe, crisscrossed the State offering his own special brand of assistance aJer Hurricane Sandy visiAng shelters and first responders, delivering donaAons and assisAng with food and clothing drives. UlCmate Fan OpportuniCes 6 Superstorm Sandy Relief Efforts The UlAmate Rolling Stones 50 & CounAng experience package included 2 premium Ackets, 2 round trip Ackets from United Airlines, a one night hotel stay, an exclusive backstage tour and PlaAnum Club access. The Devils and PrudenAal Center held three online raffles for fans to win an UlAmate Day with the Devils, an UlAmate Kids Birthday with the Devils and the UlAmate Rolling Stones 50 & CounAng Experience. Fans helped raise over $20,000 for Sandy Relief efforts through the raffles. A mystery puck night was held where fans had the opportunity to purchase a puck signed by a Devils player or alumni for a donaAon of $20. Five hundred pucks were signed and purchased with all proceeds going to Hurricane relief efforts. Hockey Games that Help 7 Superstorm Sandy Relief Efforts PrudenAal Center hosted the Global Hockey Legends game where the North American Hockey Legends faced off against the Russian Hockey Legends. This clash of notable NHL alumni including Ken Daneyko, Bruce Driver, Grant Marshall, Jim Dowd, Sergei Brylin, Billy Guerin, Claude Lemieux, Randy McKay, Stephane Richer and Brendan Shanahan helped raise funds to benefit the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund founded by New Jersey First Lady Mary Pat ChrisAe. Over 6,000 enthusiasAc fans came to the Rock to help raise over $50,000. Devils head coach Peter DeBoer spearheaded the Devils Alumni charity game versus the New Jersey Colonials at Mennen Ice Arena in Morristown. Former Devils including ScoM Stevens, Chris Terreri, John MacLean, Sergei Brylin, Bruce Driver and Ken Daneyko all took to the ice to help raise funds. North American and Russian Hockey Legends came together at PrudenAal Center to help raise funds for Superstorm Sandy Relief. Superstorm Sandy Relief Efforts The Kellogg’s Tour of GymnasAcs Champions made a stop at PrudenAal Center in early November 2012; just a few weeks aJer Superstorm Sandy hit New Jersey. USA GymnasAcs and PrudenAal Center teamed up to visit two shelters in Essex County & an aid distribuAon center in Hoboken to thank volunteers, provide hope to those who sustained devastaAng losses and lend a helping hand organizing donaAons for a few hours prior to the show. Street Devils Program 9 Youth Hockey Street Devils was established in 1997 in partnership with the NHL to make hockey more accessible to New Jersey children and to provide local communiAes with a youth sports program that promotes educaAon, sportsmanship, and fitness through parAcipaAon in hockey. Over 50,000 children parCcipated in 16 years Clinics by Devils alumni have helped the program’s reach, with over 125 organizaAons having parAcipated in the program since its incepAon. The Devils also provide these centers with donaAons of street hockey gear and equipment. NJ Devil along with Devils alumni Bruce Driver and Jim Dowd visited Boys and Girls Club of Pequannock for a summerAme Street Devils clinic. 10 Youth Hockey As a part of the NHL’s Hockey is for Everyone iniAaAve, Hockey In Newark is a non-­‐profit organizaAon commiMed to offering the game of hockey to Newark youth, regardless of their backgrounds or abiliAes. Over 200 children have taken part in their programming this year; with over 1,000 since its creaAon in 2003. "In 10 years, we'd like to see somebody draJed into the NHL from Newark. And we feel very strongly about that.” – Jeff Vanderbeek, Chairman New Jersey Devils The Devils’ commitment to the program was exemplified by teaming up with the NHLPA to donate 50 sets of brand new equipment to Hockey In Newark. The sets of equipment included brand new helmets, shoulder pads, gloves, hockey pants, shin guards, and skates. This program gives children ages 8-­‐18 in the Newark community the opportunity to try the sport of ice hockey. 11 Youth Hockey Local youth hockey players ready for puck drop at AmeriHealth Pavilion. Youth Hockey Central The New Jersey Devils support youth hockey across the State. New Jersey Youth Hockey Central, presented by AmeriHealth New Jersey, is the one source for all youth hockey. The site is devoted to providing insight into what is going on with youth hockey in the state of New Jersey from the mite level through the high school level. The Devils are the first NHL team to include a page providing all state high school hockey standings and staAsAcs. The site features stories highlighAng players, coaches, and programs that are doing excepAonally well and making a difference in the community they serve. AmeriHealth Youth Hockey Marquee Match-­‐Up 12 Youth Hockey The AmeriHealth Youth Hockey Marquee Match Up provides the opportunity to fulfill the dreams of New Jersey boys and girls by playing on the PrudenAal Center’s ice. Program has given over 3,500 youth hockey players the opportunity to skate on the Devils’ home ice These matches occur during the first intermission of Devils games where youth ice hockey teams from the local area have the opportunity to play on the ice at the Rock. The Gold Coast Admirals Hockey Club Mites get ready to take to the ice. NJSIAA High School Varsity Ice Hockey 13 Chatham, Delbarton and Randolph celebrated their 2013 victories on the ice at PrudenAal Center. Youth Hockey The New Jersey State High School Ice Hockey Championships and the Championship luncheon are hosted at PrudenAal Center. This year’s matchups featured teams from Bridgewater-­‐Raritan, Chatham, Delbarton, Don Bosco Prep, Morristown and Randolph. 20th Season of Honoring High School Players The New Jersey Devils High School Players of the Month program honors six athletes, one from each of six different conferences, each month from December through February. Winners are based on nominaAons received from coaches throughout the State and voted on by local media. Award winners and their guests receive Ackets to a Devils' game, a plaque presented by a Devils' player and dinner compliments of the Devils. Brightening Up Children’s Hospital of New Jersey 14 Heath & Wellness PrudenAal Center teamed up with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey to redesign the waiAng room at the Pediatric Health Center of the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Based on the theme of Built to Amaze!, the waiAng room was transformed into a first-­‐of-­‐its-­‐
kind, circus theme with children in mind. “Barnabas Health is excited and proud that PrudenCal Center and Ringling Brothers teamed up to design the waiCng room at the Pediatric Health Center in The Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center,” stated Barry H. Ostrowsky, President and Chief ExecuCve Officer of Barnabas Health. “We believe the bright colors, circus theme and new toys will bring cheer In addiAon to unveiling the new room, the Reading with Ringling program was introduced into the Pediatric Center’s exisAng reading iniAaAve. The world-­‐famous and joy to the thousands of children Ringling Bros. Clown Alley visited with children throughout the hospital brining who come to the hospital each year smiles and cheer. and help make their experience as enjoyable as possible.” Gilda’s Club The new clubhouse at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center opened in September 2012. This 4,000-­‐
square-­‐foot, four-­‐story building houses and offers free support services to anyone facing cancer. 15 Health & Wellness PrudenAal Center helps support the local chapters of Gilda’s Club Northern New Jersey in Newark and Hackensack. Gilda’s Club helps create welcoming communiAes of free support for everyone living with cancer along with their family and friends. Their innovaAve program is an essenAal complement to medical care, providing networking and support groups, workshops, educaAon and social acAviAes. This year, Gilda’s Club will be honoring PrudenAal Center for its dedicaAon to the families of the organizaAon by naming a room in its honor in their new Newark Clubhouse at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Annual Holiday Hospital Visits 16 Health & Wellness Devils coaches ScoM Stevens and Chris Terreri visited with a young paAent at local area hospital during the holiday season. Every holiday season, the New Jersey Devils visit a number of local New Jersey hospitals to spread cheer to children who have to spend the holidays in the hospital. Members of the team’s coaching staff and NJ Devil visited St. Barnabas Medical Center (Livingston, NJ), Hackensack University Medical Center (Hackensack, NJ), Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center (New Brunswick, NJ), Holy Name Medical Center (Teaneck, NJ), University Hospital (Newark, NJ), St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center (Paterson, NJ), Morristown Memorial (Morristown, NJ) and Overlook Hospital (Summit, NJ). Honoring a Hero Every Game 17 Honoring the Military PrudenAal Center and the New Jersey Devils are proud to support our naAon’s military. The American Patriot Program works with NHL teams throughout the season to honor the sacrifices of our NaAon’s Purple Heart recipients. Over 100 military members and first responders have been recognized since 2010 In partnership with PrudenAal, the New Jersey Devils highlight a hero during every home game of the season. This season, the team honored Medal of Honor Recipient Staff Sargent Clinton Romesha. Romesha was awarded Medal of Honor for his heroic acAons during a daylong aMack on his outpost in Afghanistan. College Radio Night 18 EducaAon The New Jersey Devils hosted their second annual College Radio Night on April 1. 24 students from 13 colleges & universiCes The exclusive event, in conjuncAon with College Radio Day, affords college radio students the opportunity to embark on a rare learning experience. This year’s event was highlighted by a panel discussion with several key members of the radio and television broadcast teams for the New Jersey Devils, as well as students’ ability to cover a New Jersey Devils game that same evening. Students from Curry College, East Stroudsburg University, Kean University, ManhaManville College, Monmouth University, Montclair State University, Pace University, Rowan University, Seton Hall University, The College of New Jersey, University of Maryland, William Paterson University and York College were in aMendance. Read Across America 19 EducaAon Devils alumni Jim Dowd and NJ Devil aMended a Read Across America celebraAon at Roberto Clemente School in Newark. The New Jersey Devils join schools across the United States each spring in celebraAng Read Across America. Players, alumni, and broadcasters visit local schools in an effort to promote literacy and educaAon by reading to elementary school children. This year, members of the Devils Alumni AssociaAon, including Bruce Driver, Grant Marshall, and Jim Dowd parAcipated in Read Across America by traveling across the state of New Jersey to appear in classrooms to read to children and promote the importance of reading in schools. New Jersey Devils Alumni AssociaCon Scholarship 20 EducaAon The New Jersey Devils Alumni AssociaAon Scholarship is a yearly award given to four graduaAng high school athletes in recogniAon of their conAnued success both on and off of the ice. Winners of this award receive a $2,500 scholarship to help support their higher educaAon costs at the college or university of their choice. This year’s honorees are Allison Aiello, Maplewood, NJ (Morristown-­‐
Beard Academy/Middlebury College), Nicholas Auriemma, Brick, NJ (Brick Township HS/Boston College), Ketul Patel, Kendall Park, NJ (South Brunswick HS/Vanderbilt Univ.) and James PoMer, Union, NJ (Seton Hall Prep/Boston College). This year’s scholarship honorees are presented their awards by Devils alumni Grant Marshall and Bruce Driver. New Jersey Devils Honor Roll Program 21 EducaAon Students from Newark’s East Side High School enjoying a Devils game thanks in part to the Honor Roll program. The New Jersey Devils remain supporAve of children’s success in school, as their team’s honor roll program conAnued this year to recognize Newark students’ hard work and dedicaAon to their educaAon. Over 18,000 Tickets Given Out in Five Years of Program Students in the Newark Public School system have the opportunity to earn free Devils Ackets based on their grade point averages ranging from one semester to an enAre year. DRESSING UP Community Pride Employees of the Devils and PrudenAal Center came together to help the local community in the inaugural Devils Care DRESSING UP clothing drive. More than 7,500 pieces of clothing donated aided over 300 local families Families from over a dozen local area non-­‐profits were invited into PrudenAal Center to shop, share in holiday cheer, visit with NJ Devil and enjoy refreshments. Employees were on hand to serve as personal shoppers and assist families throughout the day. 22 23 Community Pride NHL Green Legacy Tree Project As part of the NHL’s commitment to preserve and support the local environments of host ciAes for NHL events, NHL Green’s Legacy Tree Project made its mark at the 2013 NHL Entry DraJ. In cooperaAon with the Devils Care FoundaAon, the NHL FoundaAon donated 30 trees to represent each league team’s commitment to sustainability. "The New Jersey Devils have planted over 100 trees in our neighborhood since PrudenCal Center opened, helping to promote a greener Newark," said Jeff Vanderbeek, Chairman, New Jersey Devils. "We appreciate the NHL's commitment to the organizaCon and our city." “The NHL and our partners the Devils -­‐-­‐ we’re creaCng a transformaCve impact on our city; and so today, as the Mayor who has the NHL draJ here I am proud to be part of the tree program that is the jealousy and envy of many others.” – Newark Mayor Cory Booker “We applaud the Devils for hosCng the NHL and their efforts on behalf of the environment. We applaud Essex County and the city of Newark for being great hosts, not just of the draJ, but for being the home of the Devils and this marvelous PrudenCal Center.” – NHL Commissioner Gary Bejman This year's project planted cherry trees near pear trees, creaAng an aestheAc at the plaza reminiscent of vintage Devils colors, with green foliage accompanied by red and white blossoms. The cherry trees will neighbor the south side of PrudenAal Center. In addiAon to donaAng thousands of Ackets to events such as Devils games and shows such as Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Carrie Underwood, Gospelfest and Street League Skateboarding Championship, they serve these organizaAons in many other capaciAes including offering space at PrudenAal Center for meeAngs and events. These opportuniAes allow for many Newark residents to experience professional sports and entertainment at PrudenAal Center. Alumni In the Community Alumni Appearances Each year, Devils alumni make appearances throughout the community on behalf of the team. This season former Devils Ken Daneyko, Bruce Driver, Grant Marshall and Jim Dowd made over 100 appearances throughout New Jersey. These visits include trips to local businesses, schools, youth centers and sports banquets. On the ice or off, fans always enjoy meeAng with the Devils alumni. 25 The Devils and PrudenAal Center have made donaAons to members of the community.
