Be sure to use fresh, clean unleaded petrol and do not mix up too much at one time. Follow the instructions carefully for the proper petrol/oil mixture. 12 Always use the fresh petrol mix explained in your operator's manual Always shake the petrol mix before filling the tank. Drain the tank and run the engine dry before storing the unit Use right oil. Only buy and use 2-stroke synthetic oil designed for air cooled engines such as this. Caution: For proper engine operation and maximum reliability, pay strict attention to the oil and fuel mixing instructions on the 2-cycle oil container. Using improperly mixed fuel can severely damage the engine. We recommend using high quality synthetic oil mixed with unleaded petrol in the ratio 25:1. NB: Should you find this mixture produces too much smoke, you can reduce the amount of oil down to an absolute minimum of 40:1 petrol to oil. IMPORTANT: If you decide to use less oil in your petrol/oil mix (e.g. 40: 1), it is even more important to use the highest grade synthetic oil. Too little oil will cause the piston to seize and will render your guarantee invalid. Mix the oil and petrol in the container provided. Never try and mix the two directly in the engine fuel tank. To mix, shake the container vigorously for 5-l0 seconds making sure you securely tightened the container cap. WARNING: Petrol is highly flammable and ignited vapors may explode. Always stop the engine and allow it to cool before filling the fuel tank. Do not smoke while filling the tank. WARNING: Remove fuel cap slowly to avoid injury from fuel spray. Never operate the machine without the fuel cap securely in place. WARNING: Add fuel in a well-ventilated outdoor area. Wipe up any spilled fuel immediately. Avoid creating a source of ignition for spilt fuel. Do not start the engine until fuel vapors dissipate. NOTE: Dispose of the old fuel/oil mix in accordance to local regulations. FILLING THE FUEL TANK Make sure the cultivator is in a horizontal position when filling or adding fuel to the tank. 13 OPERATION Before starting the machine, please check whether the throttle control cable is correctly adjusted and operates smoothly and positively (Fig 7). When you operate the throttle lever, if you feel the throttle control cable is too loose, please adjust the cable adjusting screw (a), shown on Fig 8, clockwise; if too tight, adjust anti-clockwise. New cables will naturally stretch a little so after using the machine for a long time, check and re-adjust as required. When the engine is running, but idling, the throttle cable should be tight but not so tight that it is increasing the engine speed. The cable should neither be slack as this would reduce the range of the potential engine speed. If too loose, adjust clockwise. (a) If too tight, adjust anti-clockwise. Fig. 7 Fig. 8 To start the engine using the Recoil Starter (Part8) Move the cultivator to the work area prior to starting the engine. Transport the cultivator by pushing it on its wheels. WARNING: To prevent serious personal injury, never pick-up or carry the machine whilst the engine is running. A) Start the machine as described as follows AND WITH THE MACHINE RESTING ON THE GROUND IN THE HORIZONTAL POSITION a) FROM COLD Please set the STOP/START switch on the right handlebar to the START position. Set the choke lever on the left side of the engine to cold start position (towards you). Press Primer Bulb 6-8 times until you see the fuel flow through the transparent hose from the fuel tank to the carburetor. Put your left foot on the frame (if right-handed) to help hold the machine steady and pull the starter cable out towards you. Only pull the starter handle in the same direction as the handle is pointing. The engine should start after just a 14 few pulls. Allow the engine to run for approximately 5 seconds and move the choke lever halfway back towards the run position. Allow engine to run for another 5 seconds and then move the choke lever to its run position. b) FROM HOT B) Exactly the same process as from cold except keep the choke in the run position. With the engine running and the tines off the ground, pull up the throttle control lever to increase the engine speed. Hold both of the handlebar grips firmly, slowly lower the cultivator until the tines make contact with the ground. As the tines rotate on the soil, begin to pull back on the cultivator so that the tines can penetrate the ground. Once the ground has been broken, continue at a moderate pace until you are familiar with the controls and the handling of the cultivator. C) Pull the cultivator backwards to improve the depth of cultivation and reduce your effort. TRANSPORTING THE MACHINE 1. Stop the engine. 2. Slide the wheel bracket assembly all the way down if you purchased the extra wheels or carry it using the handle. 3. Tilt the machine back until the tines clear the ground. 4. Push, pull, or carry the machine to the next location. MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE Perform these required maintenance procedures at the frequency stated in the table. These procedures should also be a part of any seasonal tune-up. WARNING: To prevent serious injury, never perform maintenance or repairs to a hot engine. Disconnect the spark plug cap and lead to ensure that the machine cannot start. In order to assure peak performance of your engine, inspection of the engine exhaust port maybe necessary after 50 hours of operation. If you notice lost RPM, poor performance or general lack of acceleration, this service may be required. FREQUENCY MAINTENANCE REQUIRED Every 10 hours Clear and re-oil air filter Every 25 hours Check spark plug condition and gap REFER TO Page. 11-12 Page. 12 15 AIR FILTER MAINTENANCE Removing the Air Filter Cover 1. Remove the air filter cover by loosening the socket head cap screw. 2. Pull off the cover. Air filter cover socket head cap screw Fig 9 Cleaning the Air Filter Clean and re-oil the air filter every ten hours of operation. It is a vitally important item to maintain. Remove the sponge filter from inside. Wash the filter in detergent and water (Fig. 10). Rinse the filter thoroughly. Squeeze out excess water and allow it to dry completely. Apply enough SAE 30 oil to lightly coat the filter (Fig. 11). Squeeze the filter to spread and remove extra oil (Fig. 11). Replace the air filter and cover and securing screw. NOTE: Operating the machine without the air filter and cover assembly will VOID the warranty. 16 Fig. 10 Fig. 11 Engine Idle Speed Adjuster The adjuster is located just above (Fig8 Screw a) and to the right of the primer bulb. ADJUSTING IDLE SPEED After checking and cleaning the air filter if necessary, start the engine and let it run for 2-3 minutes to warm up. Release the throttle lever and allow the engine to idle. If the engine cuts out (will not idle), turn the adjuster clockwise l/8th of a turn at a time until the engine idles smoothly. NOTE: Tines must not be rotating on idle. If they do, turn the adjustment screw anti-clockwise a tiny amount. Replacing the Spark Plug a) Use a champion RDJ7Y spark plug (or equivalent). The correct air gap is 0.020in (0.5mm). Remove the plug after every 25 hours of operation to check its condition. b) Stop the engine and allow it to cool. Grasp the plug cap firmly and pull the cap from the spark plug. Clean dirt from around the spark plug. Remove the Spark plug from the cylinder head by turning a 5/8" socket (supplied) counterclockwise. c) Set the gap at 0.020 in (0.5mm) using a feeler gauge. d) Clean and replace the sparkplug finger-tight and take care not to cross the thread in the cylinder head. e) Tighten using the wrench taking care not to over-tighten. f) On no account allow dirt to enter the cylinder when the spark plug is removed. We suggest filling the plughole using a small piece of clean rag. Do not use tissue as this may tear and enter the cylinder. STORAGE Allow the engine to cool before storing. To be stored in a well-ventilated and dry area that out of the reach of children. Long Term Storage a) Drain any fuel left in the tank into a container and dispose of considering local bylaws. b) Start and run the engine until it stalls. This ensures all fuel has been used from the carburetor. 17 c) Allow the engine to cool and remove the spark plug. d) Put 30ml of high quality motor oil into the cylinder. Slowly pull the starter to distribute the oil. e) Re-install the spark plug. NOTE: When re-starting after prolonged storage, be sure to drain all the oil out from the cylinder first!
