About the Trail
The earliest known trail between Tweed Heads and Ballina
was along the beach at low tide. Once a series of cedargetters tracks, the trail passed through forest so dense
there were only occasional glimpses of the sky. Timber
cutters tracks laid the foundation for movement into the
area in the 1840’s with farmers also arriving attracted by
the rich volcanic soil. As settlements sprang up the paths
gave way to horse tracks but transport was still difficult
with tracks generally in either dust or quagmire conditions.
This changed with the new railway in 1894. The railway
saw rapid population expansion and the once boggy dank
tracks became the blueprints for the roads we travel today.
This glorious route through rainforest and mountains,
over sparkling rivers and along beautiful coastline, dotted
with historical towns laden with treasures and curios is
yours to enjoy along the Northern Rivers Secondhand and
Collectables Trail.

Tweed Heads
Tweed Heads, on the NSW/Queensland state border, is only five
minutes from the Gold Coast airport. The area is blessed with
beautiful beaches, a large river, pristine rainforests, impressive
mountains and beautiful countryside. Tweed Heads itself is a large
town with two shopping complexes and many major outlets to serve
a growing resident population and expanding tourism industry
developing along the Tweed Coast. Tweed Heads offers a range of
salvage, building materials and secondhand stores to satisfy both
the renovator and the collector.
Chinderah
Driving south past lush green pastures and the wild foothills of the
Great Dividing Range, you will find Chinderah, a peaceful riverside
village with 3.5 kms of uncrowded beaches and 26 kms of walkways
and cycleways nearby. Chinderah boasts one of the largest dealers
in old wares in the area and the proprietor is particularly passionate
about all things marine. It’s a great place to fossick for hours.

With a number of historic buildings in the art deco and federation style,
Murwillumbah is still a traditional agricultural centre and is located
almost exactly in the middle of the Mt Warning caldera with the nearby
mountain commanding almost every view. The volcanic slopes are
cloaked in dense forests. The Tweed River Regional Art Gallery, at
the southern end of town,
offers panoramic views of
the Tweed Valley. The Gallery
collection includes Australian
portraits of all eras, as well
as works by regional artists
depicting the local area.
The charming old town is
embracing the new wave
of interest in antique and
collectables and is home to
the Northern Rivers Bottle and
Collectors Club which hosts
an annual fair in August.
Mooball
A visit to the area is not complete without a visit to Mooball - a town
dedicated to the cow. With cow print rocks and telephone poles, it
is only natural that the Moo Moo Roadhouse and service station is a
tribute to all things that moo too. Grab a burger while you check out
the Hot Rod vintage and cool memorabilia.

Lismore
Brunswick Heads, a small seaside town situated at the mouth
of the Brunswick River, has still managed to retain its traditional
family-friendly village atmosphere and offers all the simple pleasures
of swimming, fishing, boating and walking. Timber bridges link
the riverside to a safe,
quiet beach at the mouth of the
Brunswick River and to the
surf beach that spans the
coastline all the way south
to Byron Bay. The north
bank of the river hosts a
protected rainforest and
the southern bank provides
a harbour and small marina
for fishing boats and small
craft. Mt Chincogan and
Mt Warning provide a
spectacular hinterland
backdrop to the river.
Cape Byron is the most easterly point of Australia. Its famous
lighthouse has the most powerful beacon in Australia. There are
several beautiful beaches with fantastic surf and magnificent
scenery that attracts sky divers, hang gliders and hot air balloonists,
as well as scuba diving and snorkelling in the recently established
Cape Byron Marine Park. The area is also noted for its wildlife,
including seasonal whale watching. Byron Bay was established in
the 1870s, and before it became a renowned holiday destination had
a history of primary industrial production (dairy factory, abattoirs,
whaling until 1963 and fishing) and was a significant, but hazardous
sea port.
The city of Lismore is the major commercial, cultural and
educational centre of the region and is near some of the finest
sub-tropical rainforest reserves in Australia. Lismore and its
surrounding hinterland, known as the Rainbow Region, contains
nearly a third of NSW forest reserve. The Big Scrub was an area
of land (some 75 000ha) in and around Lismore, and is believed to
have been the largest single stand of subtropical rainforest in the
world, before being substantially cleared by cedar cutters in the
1840’s and later by farmers. Lismore has become a major base
for those wishing to pursue creative endeavours and alternative
lifestyles. Thus there is a high concentration of painters,
woodworkers, ceramists, filmmakers, musicians, poets, designers
and dancers with many galleries, studios and theatres in the
area. The award-winning Lantern Parade is a major community
celebration held at the time of the winter solstice each year.
Despite its small size, Brunswick offers a great mix of cosmopolitan
cafes and restaurants scattered between unique fashion, homeware
and healthy lifestyle shops. In addition to three op shops, a
passionate group of collectors present an eclectic mix of treasures,
furniture and old wares. You never know what you might find!
The Old and Gold Festival held on the June long weekend each
year celebrates all things old, secondhand and recycled with 90
garage sales and an indoor Secondhand Fair. With a huge range
of comfortable accommodation options, Brunswick Heads
provides an excellent central base for treasure hunting in the
area.
Bangalow retains some of the region’s best street architecture.
Previously the centre of the district’s dairying industry, families
looking for a more peaceful lifestyle settled
on rural subdivisions, taking
up subtropical fruits, coffee,
macadamia and herb
farming, or establishing art
and craft studios. Each May
the Billy Cart Derby takes
over the streets, providing
wonderful examples of the
imagination, talent and, some
would say foolhardiness, of
local kids and kids at heart.
Bangalow Historic Museum
has an interesting collection
of local memorabilia. Go
window shopping, find that
special something amongst the many fine art, craft and homeware
outlets, or do some serious treasure hunting among the collection
of secondhand stores for fine antiques, old wares and collectables,
vintage furniture, aged mirrors and retro furniture and gear.
Mullumbimby
Mullumbimby is a traditional Australian rural service town with
a colourful twist, where traditional and alternative lifestyles
blend harmoniously. Mt Chincogan dramatically dominates the
local scenery. Walking tracks and picnic facilities can be found
along the banks of the river in town. Brunswick Valley Heritage
Park is a reserve where over 200 rainforest species from
various rainforest types have been established and labelled.
A collection of local history memorabilia and a shed full of old
machinery and tools is to be found at the Brunswick Valley
Historical Society Museum. It’s open Fridays 11-3, by appointment,
or on the third Saturday of the month, during the on-site market day.
Crystal Castle, with its lush gardens and displays of crystals from
around the world, is close by. The treasure hunting experience will
take you from the quirky and retro clothing, furniture and nic-nac
stores to the more traditional secondhand furniture outlets and the
quintessential antique shop.
Today Byron Bay’s scenery, culture, lifestyle, activities and events
attract visitors from all over the world. A visit to the Arts and
Industrial Estate, rich in arts, crafts, secondhand and antique
furniture outlets, is a must. The town itself provides a cosmopolitan
backdrop for a stroll around the streets in exploring the interesting
antique and retro curios, furniture, clothes and books.
Bangalow
Clunes
Once a staging post on the Lismore to Bangalow Road, Clunes
is said to be the birthplace of the area’s dairy industry and was
nick-named “the Holy City” because of the number of fine early
Australian churches in the village. Clunes has some beautiful
examples of north coast federation houses and its old wares store
reflects the village’s country style.
With its rich history, Lismore is a treasure trove of museums,
galleries, architecture, books, antiques and curios. Lismore’s
“bookbeat”, several recycled building material outlets and a strip
of secondhand, vintage and collectable stores in North Lismore
make a visit most worthwhile.
Alstonville
More romantically known as Duck Creek Mountain in its early
days, Alstonville is an Aladdin’s Cave of historic buildings, classic
Australian architecture, an art gallery, stores and cafes. Among
the surrounding hills is one of the last remnants of the “Big
Scrub”. It is said that the soil around Alstonville is 12m deep
and amongst the best agricultural land in Australia with thriving
plantations of macadamias, avocados, pecans, coffee and
landscaping nurseries. The Tropical Fruit Research Station and
the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service northern regional
headquarters manages the wide variety of parks and reserves,
including the World Heritage listed parks of the Border volcano
group.
Ballina
The town of Ballina, located at the mouth of the Richmond River
and surrounded by 32 kms of white, sandy beaches and crystal
waterways, is a commercial and entertainment hub, with a blend
of tranquil seaside hideaways and vibrant holiday parks and
resorts. As early as 1842 cedar cutters and their families moved
to the area by sea and a settlement developed. By 1853 the first
sawmill was built. The growth of the town was rapid, greatly
assisted by a short goldrush in the 1860s when gold was found
in the sands at the mouth of the Richmond River. As people
moved into the district, Ballina came to serve as a port for Casino,
Lismore and the pastoral lands. Apart from numerous op shops
one of Australia’s largest antique and collectable stores is to be
found just on Ballina’s southern outskirts.
