PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM
Welcome to our 2013-2014 Performing Arts Program. We are
offering activities in music, singing, drama and dance for all
students.
Our classes are thoroughly designed to be innovative, fun and
engaging to nurture our students' talents and help them grow as
human beings. All teachers involved in the BFIS Performing Arts
Program are talented and experienced professionals dedicated
to bringing out the very best in individual students while
ensuring all children enjoy the program. Their approach is
simple:
1.Encourage and motivate each child so that they feel safe to
express themselves freely.
2.Build on strengths with the aim to develop confidence and
self-esteem.
3.Build on strengths to develop skills and learn new concepts.
We welcome all ages and abilities. The opportunity to sing in
the choir, dance, play in the orchestra, create a band or
perform on stage is open to all students. All that is required is
desire!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Choir
Grades 3-5 Tuesday 4:15- 5:15 pm
Price second semester: 275€
This will be open to all students in 3rd to 5th Grade. Children
will develop confidence, and skills in singing, listening and
working together as a team. All songs will be motivating, fun
and challenging. All children in the choir will have
opportunities to perform throughout the year.
Street/Hip Hop Dance
Theatre Club
Grades 4-5, Monday or Wednesday 4:15-5:15 pm
Grades K-1, Tuesday 4:15-5:15 pm
Grades 2-3, Thursday 4:15-5:15 pm
Price second semester: 275€
Students begin each semester building their confidence, selfesteem and creativity using specific drama, movement and
voice activities. They then work towards and end of Semester
performance in the theater that includes acting, dancing and
singing.
Grades 2-5 Wednesday 4:15-5:15 pm
Price second semester: 275€
Individual Music and Singing
Lessons
Students will learn some cool, hip and dynamic dance moves
that will motivate, inspire and offer a fantastic workout. There
will also be the opportunity to perform some of the dances at
the end of the semester.

Ind. 30 minutes-25€; Ind. 1 h-35€;
Group 2 students: 1h-20€ student/session (80€ student/month)
Group 4 students: 1h-10€ student/session (40€ student/month)
BFIS Orchestra

As our music program grows and we have sufficient interest
our aim is to create our very own BFIS Orchestra so, if
students are ready and wanting this activity, please contact
Anita Kleijn at [email protected] so we can get this up and
running !
Individual music lessons are offered to all Elementary, Middle and
High School students. All our teachers are highly experienced
professionals dedicated to inspire and motivate students and
develop their musical skills. A wide range of instruments are
taught including, piano, singing, cello, violin, guitar, brass, drums,
flute, saxophone, clarinet and double base.
We recommend that when students begin they have an individual
session. Once we have students of a similar age and level we will
offer the possibility of small group sessions to those that would
prefer this option.
MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL
Choir
MS/HS Musical
All MS/HS Grades, Tuesday 5:15-6:15 pm
Price second semester: 275€
Grades 7-12, Monday & Thursday 4:15-5:30 pm
This will offer students a fantastic opportunity to sing together
in a group setting. Students will sing popular songs, learn to
harmonize and enjoy a number of performance opportunities
including our December show and other concerts.
Street/Hip Hop Dance
All MS/HS Grades, Wednesday 5:15-6:15 pm
Price second semester: 275€
This class is energetic, fun and students will learn some of the
latest street and hip hop dance moves and choreography.
There will also have the opportunity to perform some of the
dances at the end of the semester.
BFIS Orchestra
All MS/HS Grades, days and time TBD
Price second semester: TBD
As our music program grows and we have sufficient interest

Building on recent success in Drama, students will further
develop their talent and performance skills through a variety
of performance opportunities, including the One Act Play
Festival and the Spring Musical.

Students will be offered the opportunity to create a band,
practice and perform together. They will be given expert
guidance and support in song writing, music and performing.

TEACHERS & INSTRUCTORS
Ed Aldcroft
Choir and Singing Teacher
After receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music at the University of Cambridge Ed went on to become a choral
director and music educator working with people of all ages and abilities at The Sage Gateshead (an International
centre for music and music education based in the North of England). He has been singing and playing the piano for
over twenty years, and has performed as a pianist and vocalist with many different professional and semi-professional
ensembles all over the UK. Ed has recently moved to Barcelona.
Anita Kleijn
Theatre Club Teacher and Performing Arts Program
Anita Kleijn studied at Bush Davies School for Theatre Arts (UK) , gained experience working in dance, the
theatre (including The Royal Shakespeare Company’s Youth Project) and TV ( BMG, The Funky Workout
together with Jenny Powell). She also has a Post Graduate Teaching Qualification (King Alfred’s College,
Winchester). She went on to work for the Training and Development Department of the YMCA (London). Her role
included presenting at leading Health and Wellness conventions, and running workshops for the teacher training
courses. Since 1997 she has worked in a variety of schools and afterschool programs teaching and developing
the arts. She has organized various community arts events for children that raised both awareness and funds .
Rachel Grove
Private Lessons Piano & Violin
Rachel is currently teaching general music and choral music to K-5th grade at BFIS. She has played the piano since
she was a small child, and studied music at a University just outside of Los Angeles, with emphasis in voice and violin.
She has toured with choirs and orchestras across the United States, in South Korea, and throughout Europe. She has
not only studied the art of playing, but also had extensive training in how to teach music to those beginning. She is
certified to teach ages Kindergarten-12th grade. She has worked with many young musicians, and loves creating an
enjoyable experience for her students, while watching them develop skills and passion for music!
Frances Bartlett
Cello and Orchestra Teacher
Frances Bartlett is a classical cellist with a twist! She has worked with the London Studio Orchestra, in the Gran
Teatre del Liceu, with the Banda d’Improvisadors de Barcelona and in Baroque groups in Barcelona and England. She
has given many international solo performances, including several premieres working closely with composers and
performs with contemporary dance companies. She is the co-director of the V.O Quartet and has her own ensemble
“La Follia”. She is co-director of the cultural association ‘Shameless’ that takes spontaneous theatre and music into
the community.
Ben Torbush
Drama Club
Ben Torbush has been performing in musical theatre since before he could spell it! He has worked in community,
school and semi professional performing groups for most of his life as an actor, technician, set designer, writer and
director. At BFIS he helped out as stage manager for Wizard of OZ and then took over leadership of the Drama
program last year, culminating in a stellar production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Paola Caballero
Violin Teacher
Paola Caballero is an accomplished musician and violin / viola teacher. She studied in Canada and at the Guildhall School of
Music and Drama, London. Paola has plenty of performance experience including the Orchestra Sinfonica de Barcelona I
Nacional de Catalunya, Esperento Trio, London and BBC live broadcasts at the Barbican. Paola has taught private violin and
viola lessons for 15 years. She also has experience as a chamber coach, conductor and teaching musicianship skills. Paola also
offers individual violin lessons to students at BFIS.
Mirjam Plas
Flute Teacher
Dutch flutist Mirjam Plas has a master of music degree from the Royal Northern College of Music, where she studied with
Peter Lloyd. She now combines her teaching with an active performance career, playing regularly with the Gran Teatre del
Liceu, Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona I Nacional de Catalunya (l’OBC) and Camerata XX1. Chamber music is also an important
element of Mirjam’s musical life. She has played with Daniel Tarrida (piano) to accompany the puppet theatre “La Maquine”
in Granada, plays with the Bach Zum Mitsingen ensemble and is founding member of the flute quartet 4NOW giving
workshops in schools across Catalonia. As a teacher she is the head of winds at the Escola de Música Sant Gervasi and Escola
de Música i Dansa Fusió (Sant Cugat).
Jacob Lenson
Guitar Teacher
Jacob Lenson studied classical guitar at the Royal Academy of Music where he graduated with distinction. He has performed all
over the UK with his guitar duo and with Jazz/Flamenco guitarist Eduardo Niebla. He’s been teaching for 10 years and has taught
in some of London’s most prestigious secondary schools. He has a keen interest in other styles and has studied
flamenco, jazz and is currently studying early music on plucked strings in Barcelona
Diego Sinniger de Salas
Hip Hop Teacher
Diego is a professionally trained dancer and has worked with various dance groups (Brodas Junior, Hermanos de baile, Uniq,
Dblock etc.) Diego has studied Urban Dance in New York, Contempory dance in Spain and worked in Belgium with Win
Vandekeybus, Elena Fokina, El colectivo Los Slovaks and others. Diego is an inspiring teacher with an excellent capacity to
motivate and inspire his students. He has lots of experience teaching children of all ages and is currently teaching at Varium
Dance School in Barcelona and now at BFIS!

Sebastien Forest
Double Bass Teacher
Canadian born Sebastien obtained his degree from McGill University in Montreal and the Glenn Gould Professional School in
Toronto. He has worked in the UK as a freelance musician playing with the Hallè, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the
Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment to name a few. During his time in the UK he also taught doublebass for the Hull Music
Services. Sebastien has lived in Barcelona since 2006 and is a freelance musician including the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the
Orchestra del VallÉs and the Camerata XX1 orchestra of Tarragona.
Stephen Marchionda
Classical Guitar Teacher
Stephen Marchionda is a classical guitarist who has performed throughout the world including solo performances at Carnegie
Hall, Lincon Centre, Harvard Music Association, Royal Opera House and BBC Radio 3. Stephen has also taught many talented
musicians in prestigious music academies and Universities including Columbia University (New York), Royal Academy of Music
(London) and the Conservatori Liceu (Barcelona). He currently teaches individual and group guitar lessons at BFIS.
Dan Posen
Trumpet, Horn and Trombone Teacher
Dan studied classical trumpet at McGill University in Montreal Canada. He was awarded a BMus in 1990. He played trumpet in
the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, the Canadian touring company of the Phantom of the Opera and collaborated with the
Opera Lyra in Ottawa. Barcelona has been his home since 1991 and he has performed frequently including Barcelona and
Catalonia Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra de Cambra del Teatre Lliure and is a frequent collaborator with L’Orquestra del
Teatre del Gran Liceu de Barcelona. Dan also works as a jazz and commercial trumpet player working with the Jazz Terrassa
Big Band and leading his own jazz trio. Alongside performing Dan teaches in Barcelona and is currently the trumpet teacher at
different schools in Barcelona.
JC. Pluma Santillán
Drums and Percussion Teacher
JC is an accomplished musician who has worked with many different National and International groups and artists including
Manu Chao, Bill Parker trio Jazz and Wagner pa Brazuca Matraca. He has recorded songs with Cathy Claret, Che Sudaca and
Mario Maeso to name a few. JC has been on many European tours and has played for various Jazz festivals with artists
including Ojos de Brujo, Macaco, Chico and Julian Marley. JC also teaches drum focusing on developing rhythms from around
the world: rock, funk, jazz and latin. JC currently teaches at BFIS.
Jordi Blanch
Saxophone Teacher
Jordi Blanch is a highly accomplished Saxaphone Musician and teacher. He graduated in Modern and Jazz music from ESMUC
and studied in New York at the Harbors Art Centre. He has played with many well known artists in jazz, rock, funk, blues, soul
and reggae. He also leads a group called Jazz Pretenders and currently plays in various festivals, concerts and TV3.
