VETTE NEWS July - 2013 Volume 32, Issue 7 President’s Corner What’s Happening Hi everyone, The cruise nights are in full swing. Shows are popping up everywhere. Try to make as many as you can because you never know where you will see a fellow C.O.B. member! Speaking of gathering, we had our first Ice Cream social at Country Peddlers on June 19th it was a Big Success. There were 38 members there. Everyone enjoyed the ice cream treats. The owner gave away a $25.00 gift certificate as a door prize to Country Peddlers and Ken Kaczka was the winner. Oh Ya, 28 C.O.B members went down to the NCCC convention in Bowling Green Kentucky. We all had a ball. Some went down early and some had to leave early. It was one of those trips if you didn’t have fun, it was probably because you did not get involved. The events were the Rally, Drags, High & Low speed Auto Cross, Concourse, Wash & Shine, People’s Choice Car shows, Funkhana, Value cover races, and the Corvette Family Feud. They had non-car related events like a bus trip to Maker’s Mark Distillery, or some took a ride to Nashville. Corvettes of Buffalo did a good job in bring home some prizes! The Holiday Inn could not have done any more for us in making us feel so welcomed The staff was very friendly, especially one women at the hotel restaurant. I nick named her Spanky, why I’m not sure, but she seemed to like it. It was a long ride there and back, but if you did it in two days it was well worth it. A few other events coming up: 4th of July parade and then picnic at Rod’s & Mary’s Shop. We have our COB Car Show at Salvatore’s on July 10th. Anyone wanting to help can get a hold of me or one of the Chair People. We can always use the extra help. Please bring tents if you have them. See ya all at the next event. Drive safe. Last summer I bought a 1989 coupe with only 28,000 miles. Driving it is a dream come true. Last month I came to my first Corvettes of Buffalo meeting and enjoyed it very much. I also went on last year’s COB Caravan and not only did I have a great time but also got a chance to see how well the club is run and organized. I am looking forward to many years of corvette ownership and hope to make many new friends in the club. Thank you for making me feel welcome at last month’s meeting and I hope to be involved in many more. Jim Pepe CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 4 COB Ice Cream Cruise The first Ice Cream Cruise of the summer was held at Country Peddler in Orchard Park, New York on June 19th. As you can see from the photos it turned out to be an overwhelming success. CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 5 Continue CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 6 2013 NCCC Bowling Green Convention The Corvettes of Buffalo was well represented at the 54th NCCC Annual Convention in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The trip to Kentucky was uneventful except for a heavy thunderstorm in Ohio. But once we settled into the Hotel in Bowling Green it was hot and humid outside every day. The events started on Monday morning with a Driver’s meeting and then the Concours Car Show, Wash & Shine Show and People’s Choice Show. There were many beautiful Corvettes included in the show from all over the USA. In the Concours Show, Ray & Debbie Schafer took 2nd Place in Class F (Stock C5) while Dave Huber took 2nd Place in Class F (Modified C6). In the Wash & Shine Show, I took 4th Place with 99 Pts. out of a possible 100, Tom Breen took 8th Place and Dave Huber took 9th Place. The judging was done by a Team from the GM Corvette Assembly Plant and had no affiliation with any NCCC club. They were very thorough and really knew every detail of the various Corvettes in the Show. The People’s Choice winners were selected by the NCCC participants and both I and Mike & Lee Buccilli placed 6th and 7th respectively. Monday evening was the NCCC Awards Banquet for the 2012 Racing point winners followed by the Derby Hat party. The hospitality and company was great while we relaxed in the Grand Ballroom. Tuesday, the Corvette Rallye attracted a few COB’ers including Jim & Nicholet Brett, Bob & Patti Parrish and Pete & Rose Ricigliano. I was told this was a challenging Rallye and most got lost more than once. On Tuesday, some of us went to visit the National Corvette Museum and check out all the updates going on inside and outside. I parked my C6 across from a new Yellow C7 and took some great pictures of the 2014 Corvette. Maureen and I toured the Museum with Lowell & Karen Rothenberger, Mike & Lee Buccilli, Kevin & Holly Wyse and Dave & Kathy Huber. Tuesday late afternoon, was the Funkhana obstacle course event. The fastest times were recorded by Alex Wyse and Jessie who won 2nd Place awards. Bob & Debbie Tkach won 4th Place awards, with Kevin & Holly in 5th Place, Mike & Lee Buccilli in 9th Place, Patti & Bob Parrish in 12th Place, Jim & Nicholet Brett were 14th, Skip & Maureen were 18th, Ray & Debbie Schafer were 27th, while Tom & Diane Breen were 28th. Lowell & Karen also placed in 5th Place for the Women/Men class. We all had fun, I think? Tuesday evening we attended a party at the Lost River Cave. If you like chocolate, wine and cheese then this was the place to be. The cave had an interesting history involving the Jesse James gang in 1868 and Confederate Soldiers led by John Morgan during the Civil War used the cave. Wednesday morning was for COB’ers to visit the drags to test their skills and push the pedal to the floorboards! I heard Alex Wyse and Rob Parrish went to the line together, but Alex’s 600HP C5 had a little edge on Patti Parrish’s stock C5. However, it was Rob Parrish getting a 3rd Place award at the drags for his Class.Paul & Joanne Broznia signed up for a tour of Bourbon Country and thanks to the Bus tour guide everyone made it back to the hotel safe and sober! On Wednesday Maureen and I traveled south of Nashville to visit family that I had not seen in a long time. We enjoyed the ride through Nashville and pleasant visit for the afternoon and stopped for dinner on the way back to Bowling Green. I know most COB’ers took a cruise to Nashville at least once during the week to check out Music City USA.Thursday was a busy day at the track for Low Speed Auto-cross that included Jim Brett in his C6 and Bob Parrish in Patti’s C5. And it was Bob Parrish taking 1st Place in the stock C5 class. Maureen and I went back to the Museum for a special display of new C7 Corvettes both coupe and roadsters available to see, touch, sit inside and ask questions to the GM Employees that were in attendance. There was also a special display of all Corvette models outside in front of Museum circle and Kevin Wyse was asked to show his Bowling Green C5 as Continue, part of the display. CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 7 The museum is building a new race track just across of interstate 65 and the groundbreaking ceremony was scheduled on Friday morning. The GM Assembly Plant had a special event planned to honor the 60th Year Anniversary of Corvettes and plant tours were by special invitation. Sorry to say, we didn’t get a tour of the C7 production line during our trip. Mike Buccilli and I signed up to race our custom made “Valve Cover Racers” on Thursday afternoon. My Valve Cover was eliminated in the first round but Mike’s Yankee Valve Cover did very well through the third round. The speed and distance leaders used wheels made from computer hard drive discs. We had fun and learned a key to being competitive is using narrow lightweight wheels. But we did have fun on Thursday and back at the Convention many of us won daily door prizes and a few even won evening prizes such as Pete Ricigliano won $325 gift certificate off Headers, Nicolet Brett won a $100 gift certificate, Kathy Huber won a $50. Gift certificate, and I won a $50 gift certificate from Corvette Central. Another highlight was on Thursday night. The Corvettes of Buffalo assembled a special Team to compete in the first annual Corvette Family Feud event! Mike Buccilli, Bob Parrish, Pete Ricigliano and myself competed with about 16 Teams from other NCCC clubs. Our Team came close to elimination but battled back after 3 hours of tough questions to become the 1st Place Winners of the Corvette Family Feud contest. Friday morning was the Awards Breakfast and some of us were moving a little slower than earlier in the week. Congratulations went to all the winners and participants at the Convention. This the third NCCC Convention that Maureen & I attended and each one was a little different. The location and sponsoring clubs mix things up so it changes from year to year. Next year the NCCC Convention will be in Savannah, Georgia and the following year I think it will be closer to home in the Catskills. I encourage you to make the trip and see what the convention events are all about. I think you might just have a great week of Corvette fun and meet a bunch of nice people that love Corvettes just like us. Save the Wave…. Skip Polowy CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 8 Hoover Dairy Cruise Nig ht CORVETTES of BUFFALO pg 9 72 Corvette Restoration The last part of the Vette restoration was to rebuild the distributor and replace the points, condenser, weights, springs, and the vacuum advance, with a pointless pick-up and adjustable advance. (as shown in pictures). After this rebuilding, Nick (my son who was great in extracting all the power out of this set-up) test drove the Vette and make carb and timing adjustments. We went through about 1/3 tank of gas before it made peak performance. I know that the motor is putting out more than the 200 HP than the factory listed it to have. With the motor all tuned the shielding was put in place to give it the stock look. I have put about 400 miles on the 72 and been debugging it for 4 weeks to fix any problems. While test driving I found that the power steering replacement valve leaked, so that was replaced again. I also took it to a parade to check how the cooling system work and it passed with flying colors. After I noticed the dash tachometer stopped working, and found that the cable that drove it was broken. One thing to remember is the last time the 72 was on the road was in 1989, so things can happen to a 41 year car. This will be my final article, because the Vette is finished. It was fun to do this project and write about it from start to finish. I hope it did keep your interest as many COB's don't work on their cars, and like to learn about how they are put together and work. In closing if you see this blue 1972 Vette going down the road save the wave. Peter R.
