Parent Bulletin Christ`s College Finchley
Week Ending — 3rd July 2015 Parent Bulletin Christ’s College Finchley Summer Weather As the temperatures look set to remain high for some time, please remind your child to bring a bottle of water to school. Students may fill their bottle up from the fountains at break and lunchtimes. We have allowed students to remove blazers in the very hot weather (when over 26 degrees Celsius) but they should: 1. Always have blazers with them in school (sanctions are issued where this is not the case). 2. Ensure shirts are always neatly tucked in. 3. Wear ties from the top of the collar to the waist. Year 7 and Year 12 Helpers on Year 6 Transition Day I would like to thank our wonderful teams of Year 7 and Year 12 helpers who facilitated a very successful transition day for Year 6 students here on Thursday. The new students really enjoyed their day and found our Student Ambassadors to be knowledgeable, caring, helpful and this put them at great ease on what is a potentially very nervous day for the young people. I would like to thank the parents who have allowed us to use these wonderful volunteers.. Requests for Leave in Term Time Please be reminded that school finishes on 24th July for the summer. I would ask parents to kindly refrain from requests for early starts to holidays. Six weeks is a very significant period of time and we would politely request that parents do not seek to disadvantage the education of their children by seeking to remove them from lessons simply because flights are cheaper. I am grateful to the very vast majority of parents who appreciate that the impact of several students in a class all leaving for holidays at different times in the term is incredibly disruptive on everyone’s education. Mr Olusanya THE FAYRE IS TOMORROW We hope to see you here tomorrow for our Summer Fayre between 12 and 4. We have lots of exciting things going on. We will be having live music from some of our very own students as well as a local steel band. There will be a performance from a local dance company and a Zumba / Afro Street workout. Test your balance on the Rodeo Bull or try your luck on the tombola. You can have lunch from our Barbeque or international food stall and enjoy a drink from our refreshments stall! The weather looks set to be good so slap on your sun cream and head on down! Year 7 & 8 Cricket trip to Lords On Monday June 29th representatives of our Year 7 & 8 cricket teams were invited to a Middlesex CC community schools day. Upon arrival they got involved in some team building exercises. These were fun and competitive and set the boys up for the rest of the day. They were then seated in the mound stand and watched play from the Middlesex v Hampshire county game through to lunchtime. At lunch we were invited into the nursery indoor school to try out a new form of indoor cricket being rolled out to schools next year. Several boys won tee shirts for performing well in the games (see photo ) The afternoon was spent watching the cricket and pestering England bowler Monty Panesar for his autograph who was training at Lords. He was very obliging and signed numerous cricket balls and hats for the boys. All the boys who went had a great time and are looking forward to going back in the future. Middlesex Plate Semi-Finals Results Year 8 vs Wren - WON by 9 wickets Year 10 vs Whitefield - WON by 7 wickets 1st XI vs MCC - WON by 4 wickets Fixtures Tuesday 7th July - Year 9/10 Athletics League Meeting (Allianz Park) Wednesday 8th July - Year 8 Cricket vs Compton (H) Thursday 9th July - 1st XI Cricket vs Old Finchleians (Old Finchleians) Latymer beat CCF by 6 wickets CCF narrowly lost a thrilling Middlesex Plate Semi-Final against Latymer at a sweltering Finchley CC. At one stage, CCF looked to be cruising to victory as openers Gabriel Wyndham-Dawe and Danny Blyghton smashed 46 in 6 overs. Both boys were out in successive deliveries and the rest of the innings stalled, leaving us with 75 runs to defend in 16 overs. Excellent fielding from all boys and economical bowling from Hassan Iqbal, Danny Blyghton, Shyam Depala, Harsh Depala and Gabriel Windham-Dawe kept Latymer under pressure throughout their innings. The game was in the balance until the final over but Latymer crawled to victory with 2 balls to spare. Harsh Depala, Hassan Iqbal and Shyam Depala were our wicket takers and can take much of the credit for pushing Latymer so hard. Team: Danny Blyghton, Gabriel Wyndham-Dawe, Hassan Iqbal, Harsh Depala, Shyam Depala, Jayidu Jayaweera, Aamir Newton, Felipe Keeley, Josh Howarth, Umar Siddiq, Jamal Lharri, Taranvir Singh, Oliver Beagly Man of the Match – Harsh Depala (2 wickets and mature bowling at the end of the innings) Page 3 Parent Bulletin Christ’s College Finchley STEM club trip to the Science museum On Wednesday, 1st July; Mr Pereira and I took 24 KS3 boys to the amazing Science mMuseum in South Kensington. The outdoor temperature was already approaching 25oC on our walk to the station in the morning. We had a pretty pleasant underground journey there and arrived to the fully airconditioned museum; just in time to watch the 3D film, ‘Mysteries of the unseen world’ in the incredible IMAX cinema. It was unsettling to find out about all these creatures which live on and in our bodies. The technology of the IMAX was extremely realistic and the boys found this awe inspiring. After the film and a picnic lunch the boys had some freedom to move around the many exhibitions. They then checked in with their teachers before having some shopping time. The journey back to school was a bit more uncomfortable because of the high temperatures and busy trains but that was expected on the hottest day for 9 years in London! Many of the boys commented on their wonderful learning experience. The majority were a credit to CCF. Ms. E. Agyepong More CCF Athletes selected for London Youth Games! Another 2 CCF Athletes have this week been selected for the London Youth Games, taking place this weekend! Dates for your diary Saturday 4th July - Summer Fayre 12-4pm Friday 24th July - Last day of school. Finish at 12:30 Tuesday 1st September - INSET day, school closed to students. Wednesday 3rd September - Autumn term begins News from the Cadets 7 Cadets led by WO2 Bowra took part in the London Borough of Barnet Armed forces Day Parade on Sunday 28 June outside Hendon Town Hall. Our Cadets joined other Cadets from all 3 services as well as Veterans and Reservists from the local Reserve Forces for a short parade and service. After the parade they all went to the Town Hall for refreshments and to mix with the other participants. It was very pleasing to see them talking to some of the veterans including the oldest on parade who was 101 years old. Luckily the weather stayed good and dry until the return journey to school when it started to rain. As usual our Cadets were a credit to themselves, the Cadet Unit and the School. This coming Sunday a smaller group will be providing part of the Guard of Honour at Westminster Abbey for the Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster’s annual Civic Service. The Cadet Unit is going to St Martin’s Plain Camp near Folkestone for its Annual Camp this year. They travel to Camp on Sunday 19 July and return the following Sunday 26th July. Cost £65 includes all travel, accommodation and meals. Please see a member of the Unit Staff for a camp form if you would like to attend. Page 4 CCF v MCC Parent Bulletin Christ’s College Finchley Wednesday 1st July 2015 played at Finchley CC Our 1st XI cricket team played against the prestigious MCC Representative team in our annual friendly match yesterday. The game was played at the Finchley Cricket Club who supported us extremely well throughout the day. MCC won the toss and decided to bat first on a scorching hot day. M. Thorely who played for Leicestershire CCC last year played beautifully to score 121 with his opening partner R Clements (83). The opening stand of 177 at lunch placed the MCC in a position where they could declare soon after lunch, giving them plenty of time to bowl CCF out. Billy Blyghton who is in year 9 (2 wickets) and Ronak Depala (1 wicket) were the pick of the bowlers. On a batting paradise, they were able to trouble the top order batsmen and were able to keep the run rate down. Having said that, the MCC managed to score 235 for 3 off 49 overs. Ross Sutcliffe and Mr. Depala decided to open the batting and were able to put on 68 runs off just 6 overs. Ross was dismissed for 34 runs and Mr.Depala (38) was out a ball before the tea break. CCF were 82/2 off 10 overs at tea. Brijesh Pujara (82) and Mayur Depala (24) played superbly to put on 50 runs together. Brijesh held the innings together, but he was then out with the team needing another 49 runs to win. Sam Hamerton who kept wicket for CCF was the man of the match, as he played a brilliant innings under pressure scoring 32 not out to see CCF home. He was well supported by our year 9 student, Dylan Humphyres (13*) who hit two boundaries to finish off the game. It was a superb performance by our students who showed real class and determination. The MCC team were surprised and were thoroughly impressed with the run chase. The boys were well congratulated with the win and the spirit in which they played the match in. Well done CCF! The boys will enjoy the (hopefully) lovely weather, beautiful countryside and fresh air and exercise as they trek and drive through a county packed with Roman Medieval and Tudor remains. On their journey they will encounter forts, monasteries, castles and more. I am sure you will all join me in wishing Mr Nalewajko, Mr. Futter and the lads a safe and pleasant trip. Mr Wrein. Page 5 Parent Bulletin Christ’s College Finchley CCF Economics Three A-level economics students Kumar Chandra Kamal, James Leung, and Pierre Morris participated in the “Rethinking Economics 2015 “conference, held last weekend at the University of Greenwich. This was the third annual international conference dedicated to rethinking the way the subject matter of economics is taught and understood by the public at large. Delegates came from around the world from as far as Israel and Norway to attend. There was a range of thirty workshops, held in parallel sessions, of which the participants, whom were mostly undergraduates could hear leading economists discuss current economic issues. One very memorable and electric debate was on the subject of “Must We Pay Our Debts?” This involved Professor Ozlem Onaran (Greenwich) a member of the “Debt Truth Committee in Greece”; Professor David Graeber (LSE), author of “Debt: The First 5,000 Years; and Ann Pettifor Director of Policy Research in Macroeconomics (PRIME),who was formerly one of the leaders of the Jubilee 2000 debt campaign. Ms Pettifor is also famous for having predicted the global financial crisis. Another economist that also saw the Great Recession coming was Professor Steve Keen pictured chatting with the students in the photo below. Originally from Sydney, Australia, Professor Keen is now the Head of the School of Economics, History and Politics at the University of Kingston. Balloon Race As it was such a success last summer, we will be holding another CCF Balloon Race. We will release the balloons at the Summer Fayre on July 4th 2015. Balloons will be on sale at the fair for £2. The owner of the balloon which is returned from the furthest distance will receive a cash prize of £50. Please support us!
