Parent Bulletin Christ`s College Finchley Dates for your diary
Week Ending — 20th June 2014 Parent Bulletin Christ’s College Finchley Official Opening of Sixth Form Block We enjoyed a fantastic day on Wednesday with the opening of our splendid new Sixth Form Block. A number of staff, parents, Mr Tucker (Headteacher here for many years) students and Old Finchleans joined David Bernstein (our guest of honour) at the ceremony. David is a former student of Christ's College Finchley (1954-61) and has enjoyed an incredible career in sports and business including roles as Chairman of the F.A. and Manchester City Football Club. We were really pleased that David was able to accept our invitation and he gave a fine speech to provide a fitting end to a pleasant event. The balloon race was a huge success and the Sixth Formers worked very hard inflating all the balloons, attaching tags and then releasing them, it really was a lovely sight watching them fly off over the building and we look forward to announcing the winner of the balloon that travelled the furthest. The reception was very nice with music performed by Mark Fifield (10F) on the guitar and Daniel Bastan-Sarabi (10E) playing the piano thank you to those boys for their fantastic performances. Our archivist put on a fantastic display of the history of the school from 1910 to date. Lots of pictures will soon be available on the website. We look forward to utilising this facility to encourage even higher levels of student success here for many years. This was part of the opportunities offered to members of the Russell Group at CCF. The conference was designed to show 6th formers a top university at work, to raise aspirations as they prepare to apply for university and to reveal what is expected from a personal statement. Students also attended a lecture in a chosen specialist subject that included a politics talk about the link between Labour and the Unions, an engineering lecture as well as a Biochemistry hands on event regarding energy and muscles in the human body. Students all said they now feel better prepared as they apply to university through UCAS. Lateness Year 9 Cricket If a student is late to school they will serve a 30 minute lunchtime detention on the same day. If they are late twice in a week then they will serve a 1 hour detention on that Friday. The Year 9 Cricket team narrowly lose to East Barnet in the group stages of the Barnet League. The game was reduced to 16 overs a -side due to intense heat on the East Barnet astro-turf pitch and both sets of boys were visibly flagging by the end of the match. We batted first and scored a disappointing 97 all out with captain Sam Hamerton top scoring with 25. East Barnet in response lost their first wicket without scoring a run but then pushed on to 50-1 and the game looked to be lost. CCF rallied with 3 excellent run outs and wickets for Sam (2), Safdar Jabrkhil and Ashish Sunny but with so few runs to defend East Barnet scraped past our target with 3 balls to spare. Year 11 Lockers Can all Year 11 students please clear out their lockers and return keys to Mrs Neville by the 24th June. After this date the lockers will be cleared and the contents disposed of. Duke of Edinburgh Please ensure your son arrives at school for 7:15am on Saturday with enough food and the correct kit for his expedition. Here is a report from Abel Butoi in 7D: “In the Refugee week I have learned that, Marks and Spencer’s is owned by a Russian Refugee and Albert Einstein was a refugee who came to England after the war. The UK population is 63,000,000 and the number of refugee’s who seek asylum are only 160,000 and that is 0.2% of the UK population. Some young people who come here to seek asylum from persecution to get a better an education as well as a better life from the abuse, violence and … threatening life. People say that refugees come to England to steal jobs from hard workers. But they are wrong, it’s a myth. Refugees are coming from other countries to seek asylum from the terrible things that happened in their countries. For example they cannot work because the factory has been destroyed by war. No jobs means no money to support their family. We should learn to welcome these people in our school. “ Year 8 CCF v Highgate (Middlesex Cup) The boys performed tremendously well against a well organised and talented Highgate school side. Highgate won the toss and elected to bat on a good batting pitch. Our bowlers made it very difficult for them to score, however some big hitting towards the end of their innings ensured a respectable score of 109 runs. Billy Blyghton was the pick of the bowlers taking 2 wickets for 9 runs in 4 overs. CCF could not have asked for a better start with the bat. Billy Blyghton (43) and Hassan Omar Shah put on 33 runs together off just the first 3 overs. However, we lost 3 wickets in quick succession which made the CCF players slightly nervous. William Herbert (33) batted superbly with Cameron McLeod (10) to ensure we reached the target without losing anymore wickets. Christ's College are now through to the Semi-Finals of the county cup! Christ's College Finchley won by 7 Wickets Well done boys!! More Able Gifted and Talented Trip A group of Year 9 students took part in two events this week, as part of our commitment to ensuring provision for our More Able, Gifted and Talented Pupils. The first of these was held at University College London, who hosted a day of enrichment for specially nominated pupils from across the country, who were recieved as 'Future Scholars'. The students in receipt of the award were: Kelvin Lloyd Coker, Uzair Popalzai, Arek Djerrahain, Elion Leci and Neima Roodbari and together, they took part in some challenging philosophical and moral debates and got a taste of what life is like as a student at a Russell Group University. The second event was held at Royal Holloway University and was attended by Alexander Hughes, Jude Hogan, Rory Rush-Patterson, Naim Shah, Daniel Burgoyne, Brando Chouthi, Amir Salar Jafarifar and Samiullah Moin. The pupils were treated to a special tour of the historic campus and were given a valuable insight into the process of applying for University places. They went on to complete an experiment in one of the university's impressive labs and they produced and recorded radio interviews, with the help of a presenter from Radio Eagle.
