This gives teachers a focus for exploring the reasons why people are forced to leave their homes and the economic, social and personal consequences of them doing so. Broadcasters will be including news items and other stories which can be used to illustrate the experiences of refugees, but there is already a good selection of material available on Broadcaster’s websites and on-demand services. BBC The BBC Learning Zone has several Class Clips and other useful material for teachers such as the short film “Living as a Refugee” The Class Clips can be used to support a range of curriculum areas such as social studies and geography, as well as PSHE. On CBBC, Newsround has a report first broadcast in December 2013 explaining the Syrian Crisis and looking at the immense refugee crisis it has created. There is also a report looking at what life is like for children left homeless by the crisis and who have been forced to flee to camps in the Lebanon. Channel 4 “What’s it Like to Life as a Refugee?” A report looking at how what life is really like as a Syrian refugee living in the UK. My Refugee Journey: Jamal Osman’s Video Diary C4 reporter Jamal Osman retraces the journey he took as a desperate refugee, from Somalia to South Africa fleeing Somalia’s brutal civil war 18 years ago. The Lost Boys The story of thousands of young boys who fled from the Sudanese Army as it launched attacks Page: 1 of 2 on villages in the south of the country. The survivors fled into the bush, trekking through the wilderness until they reached Kakuma, a squalid refugee camp in Kenya, where many have remained ever since. They are known as the Lost Boys of Sudan. In 1999 3,500 of these young men were offered the chance to start a new life in the USA, and this film follows a group of these as they try to build new lives.
