Please set out below a (very short) bio, a brief summary of your reasons for
wishing to be elected to the National Committee and describe what you believe
you are able to contribute.
If you are nominating for an ordinary member position please outline your
experience or expertise in the subcommittee area chosen. Please also outline
briefly your plans for the year ahead as chair of the subcommittee:
Short Bio
I have degrees in Arts and Law from UNSW and a Masters of Laws specialising
in international human rights law from Columbia University. I have worked in the
human rights field for a decade for a range of organisations in Australia and
overseas including UN Women, the International Crimes Evidence Project and
the NSW Aboriginal Land Council. I am currently a Human Rights Fellow with
UN Women Nepal as well as being Campaign Coordinator of ChilOut (Children
Out of Immigration Detention). I have been engaged in a range of human rights
advocacy domestically and internationally including appearing before the UN
Child Rights Committee.
Reasons for wishing to be elected to National Committee
I have been on ALHR’s National Committee for approximately 9 months which
has included coordinating ALHR’s Refugee Sub-Committee. In this role, I
established a Sub-Committee of more than 70 members and compiled a
comprehensive work plan to actively engage as many members of the SubCommittee as possible. We hold meetings everyone two months and regularly
communicate by email. During this time, we have produced several media
releases and submissions to both national and international bodies. We are
currently looking to organise awareness-raising events.
What I am able to contribute
Australia has been sliding backwards when it comes to its treatment of asylum
seekers and refugees and respect for basic human rights of these people. In
this sense, there continues to be an enormous amount of work for the Refugee
Sub-Committee to engage in and I would like to continue my coordination of
this group. I would like to ensure that we continue to implement the proposed
activities outlined in our work plan. As well as having extensive knowledge of
refugee law in Australia, I am also very well organised and have existing
positive relationships with the members of the Sub-Committee. For this reason,
I would like to contribute to ALHR by continuing to coordinate this group
including drafting more submissions and media releases and engaging in a
range of other activities to pursue greater human rights for asylum seekers and
refugees in Australia.
