Bexley Charity 6-A-Side Tournament – Bank Holiday Monday
Bexley’s annual 6-a-side for the Graham Kersey Trophy was held at Manor Way last Monday before
the rain came. Spectators, basking in the earlier sunshine were treated to a spectacle of attire and
antics on and off the field. The final was between Dartford CC and Bexley District Teach Cricket.
Despite some of the age differences, Bexley came close to beating the young, athletic Dartford CC
team. The return of the mighty Wilmo was a sight to behold, not only was his batting ‘elegant’, his
fielding on the boundary delighted the crowd! Luckily he had Joe Russell and Steve King to back him
up in the field and Paskie and Sully, along with George Lush to help him make it through the day.
The day finished with some lively games in the bar and out on the field, between Bexley and
Dartford – some of which are not for publication!
Richard O’Sullivan and James ‘Bomber’ Harris did a great job organising the day, along with the
ladies providing an excellent lunch and tea. A thank you to all who helped throughout the day
behind the bar, on the BBQ, umpiring, scoring and generally helping with clearing up.
Some £300 was raised for charity.
This year’s 6-a-side
Bomber gives the day the thumbs up but for some it’s just too much!

Latest Match News
On a sunny evening at Manor Way, the first round of the Shepherd Neame 20/20 was played last
Wednesday against Old Wilsonians. Adam Ball led the batting attack reaching 56, with George Wells
(Captain) making 38, mostly run in singles and 3’s. Old Wilsonians came out and attacked the
required run rate until Ian Sels’ 3 wickets for 6 runs off 2 overs and some lively fielding saw the
visitors fall short by some 20 runs.
Following his debut in the 20/20 XI, Ian Mobey said “No one said anything about running!”
Saturday saw the 1st XI comfortably beat top of the league, Blackheath, at Manor Way. Bexley,
fielding first, restricted Blackheath to 139 runs off 41 overs, with Jason Benn taking his first wicket of
the season. Darren Cousins took 5 for 29 off 11.4 overs and George Wells took 3 for 30 off 9. With
another Captain’s innings of 77*, Steve Richards led the team to victory with a loss of 4 wickets.
The 2nd XI travelled to Blackheath and batted first. Sandeep Bains scored 67 to help put 235 on the
board. Despite fine bowling from Murtaza Abbas - 4 wickets for 32 off 11and brilliant fielding,
Bexley restricted Blackheath to 170 but were frustrated in the final few overs, failing to get the last
Blackheath wicket.
Paul ‘Fruitbat’ Thorburn took his first league wickets for Bexley in the 3rd XI game against RACS,
taking 4 wickets for 64 off 11 and scoring 22*. Nick Stroudley scored his first 50 of the season,
supported by John Olufawo, 43 runs, but despite Joe Russell scoring 4 off the last ball, both teams
tied on 181 runs.
Pick of the bowlers for the 4th XI were George Newell – 3 wickets for 24 off 8, James ‘Bomber’ Harris
– 3 wickets for 55 off 15 and Ian Clark – 4 wickets for 50 off 14, in their game away to Catford
Cyphers. Although Dean Webster led the batting, scoring 44, Bexley fell short by 50 runs.
The 5th XI travelled to Old Colfeians with new U14 colt, Jordan Parkinson, who made an impact with
46 runs in his debut senior game. Unfortunately, Bexley failed to reach the required 190 runs.
Three Bexley Colt Managers/coaches featured in a tight game for the 6thXI against Old Colfeians Steve Griggs, Andy Furze and Duncan Dalgleish but failed to make a big impact!! It was left to Mike
Shelvey to take 3 wickets for 15 off 10 and a catch but Old Colfeians managed to reach the total with
3 balls left. U15 Alex Neeley took 2 excellent catches and made 14 runs on his senior debut.
Despite Niheer Dasandi scoring 70 and taking 4 wickets for 41 off 9 with Ian Sels making 50, Bexley
1st XI failed to beat Hastings & St Leonards CC in the group quarter finals of the ECB National Club
Championship at Manor Way on Sunday.
Colts’ News
Friday 22nd May was a busy night with 3 colt teams in action.
In the U16’s game away to Bromley Common, Sam Field scored 50* but the bowlers were not able
to take many wickets and failed to put Bromley Common under any pressure. Max Pickering took
the only 2 wickets off 3 overs for 11, whilst Stanley couldn’t repeat his last two colt performances
with the ball.
The U13’s played HSBC at Manor Way in the MCC U13 Spirit of Cricket Cup. Bexley bowled first
and devastated the HSBC batsmen, bowling them all out for 57. Harry Furze took 4 wickets off 3.4
overs for 14, Angus Dalgleish took 3 for 2 runs off 3 overs and Dan Golding took 2 for 19 off 4
overs. George Haley retired on 32* and Bexley reached the target in 15.5 overs.
The U12’s played their second round match against Old Colfeians in the U12 Harry Bright Cup.
Positive batting from Aiden Griggs 28*, Jack Laing 26*and Harrison Williams 14* saw Bexley set a
score of 156 in 24 overs. Attacking bowling and excellent fielding - Ryan Saunders 3 wickets for 14
off 3 overs, Aiden 2 wickets for 1 off 1.5 overs along with a run out and catch and Jack with 2
stumpings, saw Old Colfeians all out for 49.
On Bank Holiday Monday the U13’s entered the inaugural Sidcup U13 Tournament. Bexley beat
Sidcup in the semi final and faced HSBC in the final. Unfortunately HSBC came out with all guns
blazing, seeking revenge for Friday’s defeat, to be the first winners of the cup. Well done to the
boys for getting to the final.
U13 6/8 a-side team
Friday 29th May see the U14’s travelling to Belvedere for an U14 Cup game – Good Luck boys.
There is a colt’s notice board in the Clubhouse, please check for any colt’s news, match round ups

Team Captain Profile
Rick Melbourne - 3rd XI Team Captain
After only playing school cricket, Rick joined Bexley CC at 16
years old and started his senior playing career in the 3rd XI.
As a goal keeper, he dived for every ball that came his way
and became known for his big hits. He still holds the trophy
for the fastest 50 in the Club, reached in 13 balls.
He became Vice Captain of the 2nd XI, winning the league in
1992 and scoring his highest total of 115 but due to work
and family commitments, didn’t play for 11 years. In 2004
he returned, playing again in the 2nd XI and in 2007 took on
the captaincy of the 3rd XI.
“My main aim this season is to win the league and return the
3rd XI to the Kent League, with the support of the players and
the Club. I enjoy the youngsters in the team, as it keeps me
motivated and active, running between wickets with young
legs.”
Streakers stop play at colt’s game
Dads and colts were distracted by two streakers, one male and one female, running round the
boundary during the U12’s cup match at Old Colfeians. The couple were 6th formers celebrating the
end of their school days and stopped play, whilst everyone watched.
Member Profile – Catering Committee
Pam Wellard (Chair), Theresa Bell and Lisa Campbell
Theresa, Pam and Lisa
Since the early days of tea being provided by the Ladies of Bexley Village and served by their maids,
Bexley CC now has the reputation of providing some of the best teas in the County. With 6 teams to
cater for on a Saturday and 1 on a Sunday, a lot of careful planning and hard work goes on behind
the scene. The Committee also provides lunch and teas everyday during Cricket Week, along with
other events throughout the season.
They are always looking for new volunteers to join the Tea Rota, preparing food and transporting to
local venues. If your son / grandson plays for one of the senior teams, or you can spare a couple of
hours on a Saturday or Sunday, please offer your services. Training and support will be given, along
with reimbursement for costs. If every player nominated someone to do one tea throughout the
season, the load would be greatly lightened.
If you can offer your time please contact Pam on [email protected] , or Lisa on
[email protected] or speak directly to Pam, Theresa or Lisa.
Finally
John Trice – Grounds and Pavilion Committee Chairman and 3rd XI Umpire
John is now home after his hip replacement operation. We would all like to wish John a speedy and
successful recovery and look forward to seeing him back at Manor Way and Loring Hall.
