REG POTTER A member of WGC Swimming Club, Reg Potter captained the GB Water Polo Team at the 1948 London Olympics. JEAN PICKERING Jean competed in the long jump and 100yds in 1948 and achieved a bronze medal for the 4x100m relay in 1952. DENNIS CARNILL Dennis won bronze in 1952 as GB Hockey Team player and also competed in 1956. JOHN WENK John Wenk finished 4th in the 2nd round of the 800m heats in a time of 1 min 50 secs in 1960. DEREK BEAUMONT Derek Beaumont (Beaumont Diving Academy) was the GB diving judge at the 1976 Olympics. ANN JENNER Ann, who attended St. Mary’s School in Welwyn, reached the 2nd round of the 100m in 1960. NEIL MACDONALD Neil competed in the 1977 Paralympic GB Table Tennis Team. JOY JORDAN Joy came 6th in the women’s 800m in 1960. BRENDAN MCKEOWN AND CHRIS CHURCH Welwyn Wheelers, Brendan McKeown and Chris Church competed in cycling sprint events at the 1964 (Tokyo) and 1968 (Mexico City) Olympics. ROBIN BASKERVILLE Robin competed in the Highboard Diving at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. NEIL WILLEY Neil, who lived in Brookmans Park, competed in the 100m back stroke at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics. JO GOODE Jo won bronze in 2000 for Mixed Doubles Badminton. GAIL EMMS Gail was born in Hitchin but was coached by Bill Goode at the University of Hertfordshire. She won silver in the mixed doubles Badminton in 2004 and in 2008 was a mixed doubles quarter finalist. BILLY JOE SAUNDERS Hatfield Boxer, Billy Joe Saunders competed in Beijing in 2008. ADAM BROWN AND RICHARD CHARLESWORTH Hatfield Swimmers Adam Brown and Richard Charlesworth competed in Beijing. Adam competed in the 4×100 m freestyle swimming relay and Richard competed in the 1500m freestyle. HAYLEY SAGE Hayley Sage (nee Saunders) competed in the 3m springboard synchronized diving in 2008. BEN SWAIN Ben, a former pupil of Monk’s Walk School, competed in the Men’s 3m Springboard and 3m springboard sychronised events in 2008. PAUL BROWN Paul lives in Bramfield but started his career at the Kestrel Club in Welwyn Garden City. He represented the UK in Archery at the Beijing games and hopes to compete in London 2012. RISING STARS? JODIE WILLIAMS Jodie, a Herts Phoenix Sprinter won the 2011 Women’s European Athletics Rising Star Award and hopes to qualify for the 100m. ELOISE MEAKINS Queenswood School pupil, Eloise competes in Canoe Polo and hopes to qualify for 2012. LAURA AND EMMA TROTT Both sisters cycle for Welwyn Wheelers. Laura is excelling at junior sprint events and looking to progress, whilst Emma represented England at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. BETHANY HEYWOOD Monks Walk pupil, Bethany hopes to compete as a cyclist at the London games. CALEB HUGHES Hughes, a member of Hatfield Swimming Club is setting his sights on 2012 having claimed 6 medals at the National Youth Championships. www.welhat.gov.uk/museum 02393/MuseumService/Nov11/N/R MARTYN BROWN, MARION SAUNDERS AND ALISON DRAKE At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Martyn Brown (Highboard), Marion Saunders (Highboard) and Alison Drake (Springboard) represented Great Britain and were coached by Derek Beaumont. Martyn Brown also competed in the 1976 games.
