Well as 2015 rolls into month two, is it to early to think of spring? Camping season and car shows won’t be far
away and it will be time to dust everything off and make sure everything is up to snuff for a new year. I don’t know
when the first car show is but I do know the first camp out is the end of March. I know it seems early, and last year
was horrible for camping, but the die hards stuck it out anyway. There are a lot of plans going on that I hope work
out as far as the club this year, a lot have to do with the 25th. car show and some special plans for that. While others
are going to center around some more fun things the rest of the year. We have talked about besides the chicken fry
which has become a yearly staple in the event planning mode, there is also talk about adding a second picnic meeting
this year. Last year’s picnic seemed to be enjoyed by everyone so we though if one was good two would be better.
Probably in the fall.
Those are just some of the ideas that are on the line right now, as usual if someone wants to jump up and organize another picnic or outing somewhere on a weekend then by all means do it. This is going to be a big year, not only
with our car show but also with camping and other clubs shows, there is even talk of getting a group to drive to that
state up north car show this year.
I will try to post as many dates for camp outs that I can, there are a bunch already on the internet, I will see if I
can collect as many of those that I can. I am guessing that Tina will still do a car show update now and then but now
that she’s retired that is only a guess. BTW some of these camp outs it is not required that you have a camper, just
a love for good times with your friends and all things VW. So if you have a tent and like to camp come on out. you
should also be fond of dogs,
tening,

Attention Members!
It's MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL time for many of us. If you have not yet renewed, you may see a
special notation above your address label to remind you that your subscription to Zundfolge is about to
end. You don't want to miss out on some special events we have planned for 2015, our 25th Anniversary
Year!
Due to a “glitch” in the system, some of you may have been getting Zundfolge beyond your last
renewal date. That just shows how much we want to keep you as members! So please, take a moment
to remit your $20 dues, either by mailing a check payable to COVVC, to membership chair, Brenda Easley, at 13671 Wagram Road, Pickerington, OH 43147. Or, log onto our web site, www.covvc.org, select
“Join Our Club” and renew with PayPal. How easy is that? Better yet, come to the February meeting and
renew in person! We'd love to see you!
Lastly, please be sure to keep us up to date with changes in your mailing address, phone, or email
address. Notify Brenda of changes by email at [email protected], or by phone (740) 927-1440.
Thanks a bunch!

January 8th 2015
This was the annual club banquet held at the Spaghetti Warehouse again. Mark Garrett served
as master of ceremonies for the evening.
After a delicious meal, the first item of business was our annual donation to Kids n Kamp. Bev
Circone, the founder and director was present with two of her staff. Bev gave a brief talk about
their activities and introduced the new director, Kelley Cotter. Bev is trying to go into semi-retirement, but still keep her hand in the operation with Kelley assuming full time duties. Kelley ‘s
grand son was diagnosed with cancer early in his young life and had to undergo 2 surgeries and 4 rounds of chemo-therapy. He is now 10 and doing well.
Next up was an assistant, Carroll Hinton whose son was diagnosed with cancer at 2.5 years old. He has survived and is
now 22.
Bev went on to say that because of the privacy laws, they are having trouble reaching out to new parents of children with
cancer and in the coming year they are going to attempt better communication with the new people, because cancer
keeps marching on.
We also learned that Kids n Kamp is now serving 488 children. At their Christmas party, they had 800 attenders, 150
volunteers and gave away 200 bicycles.
Next, Mark presented multiple checks to Bev: $50 in memory of David Bown, $50 in memory of Helen Albright, both
members who are recently deceased as well as the main gift of $5000.
Mark then recognized representatives of the 3 VW dealers in Columbus and thanked them for their support of our
annual show. They were: Paul and Aaron from Byers, Todd from Hatfield and John from MAG.
Mark then asked for shows of hands of those who had volunteered at the last show and shows of hands by years of membership. He went on to comment that we had been at Watkins Memorial High School for 21 years and how well that
site had worked for us and for the Athletic Boosters who sell the food.
Two long term members who are retiring from the Show Volunteer Recruitment position were recognized with awards.
Those very deserving members were, of course, Marilyn Allen and Linda Brown.
Stark Hughes gave a thumb nail history of the club. The seed was planted when he answered an ad in the Old Bus Review which had been placed by me. I had tried to sell a rusty bus with out luck and was starting to part it out, and Stark
wanted the seats. I was in need of some maintenance on another bus and Stark connected me with Mike Young – we
started talking and away we went. I was afraid nobody would come when we announced our first show, we had 77 show
up- several from Michigan and we were exstatic. I had also said that if we ever got up to 30 members, we would be doing
good. I think that Mike signed up 60 at the first show. To say that he was aggressive at that would be an understatement.
Mark reviewed the Board Members and Officers for the coming year as follows:

There’s a Ghost in the Machine- Fuse Box Problems!
This is my 50th monthly article for the Zundfolge newsletter- boy does time fly! I have plenty
more ideas and things in the pipeline to come. This month I’m going to talk about “ghost” electrical
problems. One of the things that’s common across all early VW’s is a bad connection in the fusebox. I’ve seen this a
few times and the fuseboxes are similar in design for older Type 1, 2, 3 vehicles so this could happen to any of them.
What happens is moisture gets into the fusebox area and causes light and sometimes invisible corrosion between the
fuse holder tab and the output spade tab. (Moisture in an old VW? How could that happen?!)
I had this in my bus recently and decided this would be a good article to write. It was easy to diagnose, I used
a test light to follow the power. It’s also common on VW’s to have a bad connection where the fuse sits in the fuseholder, sometimes something as simple as gently spinning the fuse can correct this issue. The test light clearly showed
I had power at both ends of the fuse and the fuse holder tabs, but the output spade (where the wire plugs onto) had
no power! I guessed (wrongly) that I had a bad connection between the fuse and the fuseholder itself. I had already
replaced the wiring harness and bead blasted the fusebox assembly but I had not disassembled each tab to clean
it individually. It looked perfect at a glance but had no continuity between the two tabs! Even after disassembly it
looked very good with virtually no corrosion visible, just enough to cause a bad connection. In the pictures I show the
tabs, disassembling, cleaning, and for assembly you just push the tabs back into the fusebox body. You will probably
want to remove the fusebox from the car in order to perform this repair, be sure to mark everything or use a spare
fusebox as a wire holder to keep all wires in order while you are working on it. Disconnect the battery prior to removing the fusebox to prevent accidental shorts as several of these fuses are hot at all times and will short if touched to
the metal bracket holding the fusebox. Taking several digital pictures is probably a good idea before disassembly to
prevent issues on reassembly. On my bus the harness was brand new so the colors and stripes on each wire were very
evident. If any of yours are faded, painted over, or spliced/replaced, be sure to make good notes where everything
goes. Radio Shack and Ebay sell narrow tape with numbers printed on it if your wire colors are not obvious or your
harness is illegible, this would be a good time to label everything so in the future identification is easier. Refer to a
schematic both before disassembly and upon reassembly to make sure everything is connected correctly.
It’s winter now, so fire up the heater in the garage (you do have heat, don’t you?), put some coffee on, and get that
classic in shape for spring cruising!

Winter
can be so much
Fun!
Brenda Agan
I’m putting out the call for those of you who think you’re creative (or not) and
are up for having some end-of-winter fun. The folks at Mad River Mountain have
challenged me to convince members of the COVVC to participate in one of the most
fun events of the season – and you don’t even need to be a skier. It’s the annual Cardboard Classic – a sled race of sorts. Participants create a “sled” using only cardboard,
duct tape and zip ties, with decorative touches optional. Our challenge is to create one
or more Classic VW’s cut out of cardboard, painted accordingly, and have a team of
riders for each creation. Prizes are awarded in several categories. Envision a VW Bus,
Bug, and/or maybe even a Thing. By the way, the sleds are launched from only partway up the ski hill; not from the top! The day would include up to a couple of hours of snow tubing for those
who are willing (tons of fun and anyone can do it) and as much aprèsski time as you like in the lodge where the food is pretty good and the
beverages (hot and cold) are even better. The event date is Saturday,
March 7. Loper & Randi from 99.7 The Blitz will give the play-by-play.
More info to follow.
To get an idea of what I’m talking about, visit the web site of
Mad River’s sister resort, Mt. Snow, to view a video of their 2014 race
at http://www.mountsnow.com/events/calendar/bud-light-ducttape-derby/, and I guarantee you will laugh out loud! One sled featured
in the video is a model of a DeLorean, so that should give you a pretty
good idea of what I’m talking about. This is a great way to promote the
club and show folks how much fun we can be. We’ll need sled builders and riders, even folks to cheer us on. If
you want to be part of this fun event, please contact me at [email protected], or (614) 323-2593.

Let’s Talk Toys!
TOYS
Michael Williams
TOYS
Welcome back everyone!!
The toy I’m sharing with each of you this month was found several years ago at a small toy show in Indiana.
I searched for this toy for well over 20 years, and I was really happy when the search was over. The older gentlemen
I purchased the toy from stated he bought the toy for his son from Montgomery Wards in the 1960’s. Lucky for me,
the son didn’t get into any fender benders while playing with the toy. The toy was very well taken care of and showed
very little wear.
This month’s VW toy was manufactured by the Daiya toy company of Japan during the early 1960s into the mid1960s. This battery operated toy is constructed of tin and is about 10.75 inches long. The toy is based on a 1960’s VW
beetle taxi. The toy has no bumper guards, which at first glance, makes you think the toy was based on a later model
VW beetle. When switched on, the taxi sign on top of the toy blinks as the toy moves along. The toy is a joy to watch
as you pretend the taxi is taking you to your next destination.
This toy is very rare and doesn’t come up for sale very often.
The Japanese toy manufacturer Tayio also produced a VW toy
similar to the Daiya example in the mid to late 1960’s. The
Daiya version is much harder to find. It’s even rarer to find the
toy’s box. Consider yourself very lucky if you find the box with
the toy. Most boxes never make it past day one once the child
removes the toy from the box. The value of the toy in good
condition with no box is around $225, with a boxed mint example coming in around $375 - $425.
Until next month… Happy Toy Hunting !!
