We welcomed 20 members of the club. Many have had a long association with our school, either being a student at the school, and / or having their own children, or other family members including grandchildren attend Galston High School. The Prefect Team took the members of the Rotary Club on a tour of the school highlighting the most recent changes in the school including the: • • • • • • Fitness laboratory Commercial Kitchen Updates on the Agricultural Farm Upgrades in Waddell Cottage Shade shelters funded by SRC Refurbishment of learning spaces for both staff and students • Old / new library sites • Outdoor areas refurbished by students (landscaping and paving) It was obvious to the Prefect Team that the Rotary Club members were interested in all the work that had been done and how learning spaces had changed over the years to meet the needs of students today. Rotary club members and prefects then enjoyed a meal together. It was a great opportunity for our prefects to hear about how school was for our Rotarians and many of them wished they were in school now. The Rotarians also had the opportunity to quiz our prefects on what they wanted to do with their future education and / or careers. After the meal, Ms Pieper gave a presentation focusing on the learning opportunities we currently provide for students at Galston High School. It has to be said, it was an enjoyable night for Rotarians and the Galston High School Community. We look forward to welcoming the Rotary Club of Galston back to our school in 2016 and thank them for coming to our school and for their support of what we do. Run by year 10 students TAS Faculty - A Snap Shot... As the year draws to a close Technology and Applied studies students are working hard to complete an array of projects. Technology Mandatory students are completing treasure chests, pencil cases, tote bags and cushions. Visually pleasing and very functional designs have been constructed. Year 8 students studying food technologies are currently producing spicy meatballs after a successful stir-fry veg recipe. Industrial Technology Wood students in Year 10 are applying finishes to their wall clock cabinets they have constructed while others are fitting their pendulum clock movements prior to taking them home. Strong and very useful step ladders are also nearing completion with Year 9 students adding their finishing touches such as hinges and support ropes. Year 10 Industrial Technology Metal students are looking forward to testing out the grill, plate and spit functions of their BBQ’s this summer holidays. Year 9 Metal students are also likely to be using their newly constructed, heavy duty garden shovels over the break. Stage 5 Food Technology students continue to produce excellent food products. Outstanding cake decoration skills are currently being demonstrated by Year 9 student while Year 10 are getting into the festive season, currently making truffles in the shape of Christmas Trees. Also awaiting Year 10 students is the “Cook your own recipe” challenge later this term. While many students are working hard to complete assigned work prior the year’s conclusion, Year 11 students are engaged in working towards HSC requirements for 2016. Mrs Gray’s Hospitality students have already completed 35 hours of successful work placement. Employers have reported extremely positive feedback, indicating that our students are well skilled and have a good work ethic. Places of work have included the Wild Pear Café, Galston Club, Dolcettini, and Gracelands early childhood Centre. Meanwhile, Miss Pickering’s Year 11 Industrial Technology class has embarked on their journey to design and manufacture a piece of furniture or timber product for their major work. Projects include an entertainment unit, surfboard, writing desk, swing chair, fishing rod cabinet and coffee tables. We look forward to the completed products in 2016. Engineering Studies students are part way through their first assessment task. Balsa bridges using truss theory have been constructed and are now being tested till destruction, followed by an analysis. The TAS faculty sincerely wishes our 2015 cohort, all the best with their upcoming HSC results. Textiles and Design, CAFS, Food Technology, Hospitality, Construction, Industrial Technology and Engineering Studies have been passionately taught and enjoyed by our many students. Prefect Report... The Prefect Team attended a Rotary Club dinner and meeting on the 10th of November. The Prefects intermingled with the club members and welcomely directed small groups around the school to provide an insight about the environment, facilities and opportunities provided by Galston High School. Dinner was then served, and the prefects helped with the organisation, serving of the food, and also socialising to add to a relaxed environment where members of the community shared a beautiful meal with our school representatives. A reminder that the prefects have a Facebook page where we highlight student achievements and post reminders for school events that are coming up. One event that the prefects are currently organising is the Christmas Assembly, where the spirit of Christmas and our school will come together to create a memorable occasion for all involved.
