A very warm welcome to Silverstone
Well here we are again, following on from
our season opener at Snetterton three
weeks ago, and what a weekend that was!
Last year saw a record entry for the first
meeting of the year, and this year we
exceeded that, with 334 entries, and 443
drivers.
Heavy rain on Saturday made driving
conditions difficult to say the least (I
know, I visited the grassy bits a couple
of times!) but the weather on Sunday
made it a weekend of two very different
halves. With so many entries, and inclement weather you
could be forgiven for thinking that there may be room for
some incidents, but I am very pleased to report that there was
not one single report of car to car contact, only one safety
car period, and precious few clerk of the course interviews.
So a big thank you to all of our drivers for the good driving
standards, please keep it up, and also to the marshals and
officials who braved the inclement Saturday weather, we really
do appreciate it.
So to this weekend, and yet again it promises to be another
cracker. All of our regular series are on the agenda, and this
is the first outing of the year for the CSCC Special Saloons
and Modsports series. With our eclectic mix of cars, and big
grids totalling over 300 entries it again promises to be a great
weekend. Welcome all.
So, yet again, all that remains from me is to wish all of you a
safe and enjoyable weekend.
John Hammersley (Chairman CSCC)
During Saturday’s lunch break we have a parade lap with a difference!
Motor Sport for MS was set up in January 2016 by Noel Wilson. Noel had been a motor sport instructor for 20 years and
has now been diagnosed with MS. The idea of the charity is to set official times on an 8mph Mobility Scooter at as many
motor sport venues as possible in the UK. The scooter has been vinyl wrapped to look like the 2015 Le Mans winning
LMP2 Oreca of KCMG. A Sparco race seat and six point harness has been fitted for safety!!
The CSCC has been kind enough to let us set lap times at 3 of their meetings this year. The aim is to try and raise
£20,000 whilst Noel still can. You can donate by finding Noel and his team in the paddock, by texting your donation via
Just Giving 70070 and using code NWMS52 or visiting www.motorsportforms.co.uk.
We are running under the MS Society’s registered charity number 1139257.

cScc modern classics
No. Driver
down leaving the Lotus of Nicholas Olson to take the
win thanks to a slick stop from his team, with Piers
and Miles Masarati in the Porsche coming 2nd, and
Edward Leigh in the BMW M3 in 3rd position. Further
down the grid it was good to see the SMART Brabus
car no 52 belonging to Rob Baker doing so well
against cars with a greater racing pedigree (and that’s
despite an overheating engine), finishing 16th.
Back on the grid today is Bernard and Benson in the
Porsche Boxster S who had a few mechanical issues
last time out so lets hope they have better luck this
time round - but that’s racing as we all know!
Welcome everyone, to our second Modern Classics race of the
season. For all the spectators who are new to this series our grid
comprises pre 1999 cars such as BMW M3 Evo E36, Porsche
Boxster, Ginetta G20, to name a few. Many of our drivers have
happy memories from last Septembers joint CSCC Modern
Classics and New Millennium race here at the GP configuration
when a full grid of 58 cars enjoyed a rare opportunity to race on
the full circuit.
A quick note to finish off, I would like to compliment
all drivers and teams for a fantastic and entertaining race from
Snetterton, lets hope we can achieve this again today.
Stay safe,
Paul Anderton, Driver Representative
CSCC Modern Classics Series
Looking back just a few weeks ago to the Snetterton meeting it
was a busy grid for qualifying, with the no. 46 Porsche of Piers
and Miles Masarati taking pole position from car no. 170 the
BMW M3 Evo of Edward Leigh, who was only 0.306 seconds
behind. Positions were close through the grid, just a little further
down the order in 16th place were Utting and Drake in the class
D Alfa Romeo GTV 3litre V6 with a time margin of just 0.013
seconds over car 20 of Tina Cooper and David Sharp in their
Lotus Elise S1 in 17th. With 24 cars preparing for the rolling start
it was going to be a cracker.
A good start was made by all with the two front runners keeping
everyone in a nicely packed formation ready for the red lights to
go out and the race to start. Nicholas Olson in the Lotus Esprit s3
got off to a flyer and led the race before his mandatory pit stop.
One of the most entertaining pits stops I’ve seen was carried
out by Marcus Dudley in his Ginetta who was in and out of his
car like a gymnast, well done to him and his team with a stop
time of 1.02.065 sec from pit entry to exit. Twenty five minutes
into the race when the pit lane window closed, the race settled

race 2 (40 Minutes with pit stop) Saturday
cScc Gold Arts magnificent Sevens
No. Driver
All the competitors at the first meeting were very pleased
and enthusiastic, in particular one group 1 competitor Mark
Horton who was thrilled to win his class.
The Gold Arts Magnificent Sevens series consists of two
races taking place at the same time, one for each group. The
qualifying times for pole position last year were around 5
seconds different for the lower powered group 1 cars which
does provide both groups with a challenging 40 minute race,
involving plenty of overtakes. The mandatory pit stop will
provide the race with an added element of uncertainty, with
some driver changes taking place.
The group 1 cars power output ranges from 120 to 185bhp,
some with sequential six speed transmissions. These cars
weigh between 550 to 610kg.
The group 2 cars power outputs range from 200 to 310bhp,
in chassis weighing between 550 to 690kg’s. Some of these
cars are fitted with sequential six speed transmissions making
for very fast lap times.
So with no more to do may I ask you to walk around the
circuit and enjoy the CSCC’s series close racing which the
competitors will no doubt enjoy. If you have any questions
please find me in the paddock and I will do my best to answer
them.

The first race was held three weeks ago at
Snetterton on the 300 circuit, on a dry, bright but
chilly Sunday in early April. Both Silverstone and
Snetterton are old World War Two airfields and
being flat they do tend to be breezy. Despite the
weatherman letting us down on the Saturday at
Snetterton all the races made for very interesting
spectating.
The CSCC Gold Arts Magnificent Sevens groups 1 and 2
was a combined race at Snetterton. Group 2 saw a brilliant
battle between Peter Ratcliff and Danny Winstanley, the lead
changing several times in the first few laps. Jonathan Mitchell
coming third overhall having worked his way through the field.
Group 1 was won by John Saunders with Matt Spark coming a
close second.

cScc new millennium & nextec Dunlop Puma cup
Wow! What a season opener for both the CSCC
New Millennium and Nextec Dunlop Puma
Cup on the Snetterton 300 circuit just three weeks
ago. Unlike those series that raced on the Saturday
we had clear skies throughout Sunday which
contributed to some great on track action. A grid of
29 cars had entered, many with two driver teams.
Qualifying was a close affair with pairing of Lee
Spencer and Rick Kerry (123) taking pole position
by 0.01 of a second from the similar E36 BMW M3
of Tom Houlbrook (13).
Excellent restraint shown by the front row pairing
brought two neat columns of cars slowly to the
startline for the rolling start. Lee Spencer grew
his lead all the way until the pit stop, a little further back Tim
Davis in the 22 TVR Tuscan fell by the wayside with mechanical
issues after showing great pace. Small groups developed and
had their own battles, with Jamie Sturges Seat Leon Supacopa
(99), Garry Wardle Ginetta G50 (27), Ben Uren Seat Leon (94)
and newcomers to the series Jeremy Cooke/Mike Dowd BMW
GT4 (186), all circulating together. A superb race long battle
developed between the TVR Tuscan of Matt Holben (56) and the
Renault Clio Cup car (33) in the hands of Riku Garner with the
TVR able to use its power advantage on Snettertons long straights
and the Clios fwd chassis and sequential gearbox handing the
advantage back to Riku in the corners. Places were changed
many times, safely and cleanly before the pit stop when Riku
handed over to new driver Phil Gardner. Onboard video can be
found and commented on at the official CSCC New Millennium
Facebook page, showing Phil in the Clio hanging onto just a 0.8
second advantage over Matt’s TVR by the flag.
At the mandatory pit stop Tom Houlbrook made a very quick stop
assisted by the Amspeed crew, putting Tom into first place on
lap 10, about half way though the race. Lee Spencer (BMW M3,
123) handed his car over to co-driver Rick Kerry, with a slower
stop losing them the lead. Rick who has returned to racing after
a break set about chasing Tom and closing the gap. Tom upped
his pace but the gap came down, sometimes by mere tenths,
The race today has the largest grid of the weekend, with 40 cars
and one reserve entered at the time of writing. Welcome to Mark
Meanwhile the Nextec Dunlop Pumas were enjoying their
own race on the same grid as the CSCC New Millennium, with a
strong entry of 10 cars. Series co-ordinator Kevin Shortis takes
up the story.

Puma. For more details please visit www.pumacup.com find us on Facebook at

Anderson and co-driver Carl Grimsley (776) in their BMW M3
in their first race with the CSCC, one of many in class M entered
today. We look forward to seeing Andre Severs in action in his
Marcos that he bought in the Autumn and has been working hard
to finish. Tom Houlbrook will struggle to overcome the 30 second
winners penalty at this early stage of the season but you can be
certain he will be trying his hardest to make up places lost in the
latter stages of the race.
The interest is now good and we (Ford Racing UK) are actively
looking at the purchase of a second race ready Puma to add to
the two road cars now in stock. Many drivers have expressed
interest in coming out to have a drive and several are looking at a
more long term commitment.
As the promoters for the Puma Cup, Ford Racing UK had a busy
time at the event. The big mention must be the wholesome
friendliness of all drivers and teams. There is a great atmosphere
in the Puma Cup and in the CSCC in general. Interesting to note
the many Fiesta STs now running in the CSCC Tin Tops. We met
up with Glyn Odell, Terry Upton and Steve Papworth to name but
three.
sometimes by a full second a lap with traffic playing a part on
some of the tighter corners of the track. In the closing laps Rick
had Tom in his sights and the gap down to less than a second at
times but he couldn’t get close enough for an overtake attempt
until the very last lap. Sweeping around Coram the pair were nose
to tail, both cars had a good exit from Murrays, Rick pulled out
of the slipstream for the uphill drag to the line. Tom held onto

his well defended lead by just 0.1 seconds, a brilliant climax to
a busy 40 minute race. Experienced driver Peter Challis and his
Arrowpack crew seemed to enjoy their first outing in the series in
the Porsche 997 (11), taking the last step of the podium. Mention
should go to Daniel Wylie (39) who raced at Rockingham that
morning, loaded his trailer, driven 90 miles to Snetterton, started
from the back of the grid and finished 6th overall.
All cars run on Dunlop Direzza control tyres and Gaz suspension
with a full race exhaust system and a Superchips ECU upgrade.
Our car also benefits from support from Cartek Motorsport.
Sunday 10th April at Snetterton saw the first outing of the Ford
Racing UK Ford Puma in this years maiden Puma Cup Event.
The car had been finished on the Friday prior to the race
weekend and it was with some trepidation that it was waved
off for qualifying. The two driver session saw a split of the 30
minute qualifying session and then the same scenario for the 40
minute race run under the stewardship of the Classic Sports Car
Club. The CSCC impressed us all with its efficient running of
the weekend and the fact that contact incidents were significant
by their absence. The event also ran to time and on Sunday was
always slightly ahead. Good job and well done!
Both drivers quickly settled into the Puma groove and bearing
in mind this was the first time that the car had been on track
they acquitted themselves well with good times in qualifying
netting a fifth fastest. The endurance race saw the Ford Racing
UK team learn some telling lessons on the changeover. Although
the change was reasonable, there is time to be shaved off to get
on a par with the experienced competitors who have previous
knowledge of the best way to do it. The car did
perform well and considering it was a donor car
with 99,000 miles on the clock, and the fact
the donor cost £175 before race fettling was a
testament to the durability of the second hand Ford
Puma of which over 46,000 were released in the
UK. That so many cars are still to be had is a great
way to think about a race series – Nextec Dunlop
Puma Cup. This must be the most cost effective
way to go one make racing!
CSCC Official David Smitheram reports:
The race for the lead had excitement through to the end. Luke
Johnson (133) and Ross Morris (199) slowly pulled a gap away
from the rest of the field a tiny bit at a time, the pair staying
together until the pit stop. Luke had a 3 second slower pit
stop so had to work hard over many laps to claw back the time
lost. Meanwhile a charging Ben Eacock (187) picked his way
through the field. A methodical pursuit saw Luke catch Ross
with about 10 minutes to go, with Luke having to manage his
cars occasional reluctance to shift into 4th gear. The rest of the
race they were locked bumper to bumper, the two cars evenly
matched and regularly alongside on the long straights, with Ross
just managing to keep the lead once they got on the brakes for
the next corner.
On the very last lap of the race Luke made his move at Agostini,
taking advantage of a faster car lapping the pair and keeping a
cars length advantage (0.4 seconds!) to the line. An impressive,
clean driving performance from both drivers and credit to
eventual 3rd place man Ben Eacock having started last on the
grid.

race 4 (40 Minutes with pit stop) Saturday
cScc tin tops
The first round had a drying but still damp qualifying session
with the race after lunch enjoying a dry track, with cool but
sunny weather, as good as it gets for early spring in Norfolk.
The top three places in qualifying were eventually repeated by
the time the flag fell during the afternoons race, with plenty of
action throughout the large field of 29 cars.
Pole position went to Russell Hird (6) Honda Integra 0.6
seconds ahead of Tom Mensley (80) Clio 172 whilst third
on the grid belonged to Carl Chambers (72) Peugeot 306 a
further 0.6 seconds back. Richard/Richard Jason Field (179)
posted a very good qualifying time placing them in 8th place
on the grid in their class A 1830cc Proton Persona, making
full use of the damp conditions. Just behind them in 9th were
Toby Harris/Lisa Selby in their class E Ford Puma 1600 (see
cover photo), fresh from a winters work with an engine rebuild
and a very fancy digital dashboard designed by Toby.
The track had fully dried by the time the race came after
lunch. Russell had his hands full for the first few laps
keeping the nimble Clio of Mensley behind him. A small gap
developed that we later found was due to a small part missing
from the gearbox linkage, denying Mensley the use of first
and second gears. Just a little further back an entertaining
duel was taking place between Carl Chambers and Chris
Boardman’s (33) BMW Compact, with the nimble BMW

cScc meteor Suspension open Series
No. Driver
Welcome to the second ever CSCC Meteor
Suspension Open Series race, with what must be
one of the most varied grids racing today?
With just 3 main rules: no slicks, no sports racers
and no single seaters, almost anything goes! Two
race winners will be receiving awards today, group
1 for Sports, Saloons and Kit cars receive an overall
win as well as one for the Sevens in Group 2.
Many of the competitors taking part will already have
raced today or will be using this as extra practice
ahead of their other race tomorrow. Regulations
allow competitors who are already entered into
the meeting to enter the Meteor Suspension Open
Series on the day, so expect to see extra cars
over and above the list published on the right, listen to the
commentator for more details.
Those entered today who are focussing only on this series
include Joe Jackson (21) Vauxhall Tigra Silhouette, Ian Knight
(666) VW Golf mk3 with turbo power and Steven Grove (5) in
his Honda powered Lotus Elise, racing with the CSCC for the first
time. Great to see Lee Jones (26) out to play in this 40 minutes
race in his space framed Mini, Lee will also be in action in
tomorrows Special Saloons and Modsports races, changing his
tyres to suit both series.
The first race at Snetterton three weeks ago was very much
shaped by the weather, with wet conditions for qualifying, turning
greasy for the last race of the day. Those wet conditions clearly
suited the front wheel drive Seat Lean Supacopa of Jamie Sturges
(99) who had pole position for the race just 0.2 seconds ahead of
a gaggle of high powered Caterham, struggling to get traction.
Pantelis Christoforou was a very creditable 5th for the grid in
his Millington Escort mk2, just behind in 6th with a superb
performance was the Arran Moulton-Smith/Chris Boardman
BMW 318ti Compact.
The conditions during the race were getting drier relative to the
flood that was that mornings qualifying, but still presented a
challenge for the 25 cars entered. Bringing up the rear was Paul
Wybrow (84) in his MGB, using the race as additional testing
time ahead of his main race. Finishing just 2 laps behind the

the much larger engined Howard Lancashire TVR Tuscan in 22nd
place, Hipwell/Hipwell Aston Martin V8 in 21st and Ball/Ball
in their 4 litre Jaguar XJS in 20th. This trio separated by mere
seconds as they slid around trying to look for drier patches to get
the power down. The BMW GT4 of Jeremy Cooke/Mike Dowd
(186) started from the back of the grid on worn tyres but fought
their way through to 13th by the flag, just 2 seconds ahead of Ian
Knight. In 2nd place and first overall in the Saloons group was the
Christoforou Escort but with a minutes lead by the flag Jonathan
Mitchell (4) was the clear winner in his Caterham CSR.
Jonathans skill in the conditions earned him the ‘Meteor
Suspension Driver Of The Day’ award as nominated by our race
commentator, with Jonathan receiving a £50 voucher from our
series sponsor.
Meteor Motorsport is very pleased to be associated with the
Classic Sports Car Club, naming this new for 2016 race series
the ‘CSCC Meteor Suspension Open Series’.

tHe lonG Hot SUmmer oF 1976
Dave Smith from www.specialsaloons.co.uk recalls the hot summer of ’76 at Silverstone when
SuperSaloons reigned supreme.
40 years ago... Ahh 1976, what are your memories from 40 years ago? Southampton’s surprise FA Cup Final win perhaps , the Montreal
Olympics and of course there was the long, hot summer drought.
On the racetracks 1976 marked the high point of the UK Super Saloon era and Silverstone was at the centre of this with 3 of the first 4
rounds there. Three cars in particular enjoyed a short-lived rivalry to be top dog and each was to win a race here apiece.
Qualifying for the season opener on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit ( May 9th ) highlighted this upper echelon of supersaloon. Quentin
Spurring wrote for Autosport magazine ‘we had a front row which reflected just what Supersaloon racing is all about. A trio of purposebuilt racing cars with saloon shells , providing all the variety one could wish for and each one a credit to the men who prepared it’.
The Champion: Gerry Marshall Vauxhall Firenza ‘Baby Bertha’. The
benchmark driver/car combination in
Supersaloons. The reigning champion
was giving the car its first race of the year
after an engine rebuild by John Nicholson
giving the 5-litre Repco V8 around 480
horses. Qualifying at 1minute 33.78 this
was over a second quicker than his best
lap whilst winning the corresponding race
the season before. Beautifully prepared
as always by DTV. (For reference Baby
Bertha in the hands of Joe Ward will be
racing with the CSCC later in the season).
braking. Not often was Baby Bertha pushed
to its very limits but when it slid wide at
Club on the last lap , Buncombe nipped
past to take the win. Marshall sportingly
came onto the winners rostrum to shake
the winner’s hand. Tony Strawson (Capri)
was the best of the rest 40 seconds
further back, Hawker having retired with its
overheating issue.
Round 3 (June 6th): After the Thruxton
round these 3 were all back for the next
round on Silverstone’s club circuit.
Hawker this time set pole only for Marshall
to blast off into a lead that he never lost.
The Chimp initially held off Hawker until
gearbox problems dropped Buncombe to
an eventual 4th. Hawker pushed Marshall
for all 15 laps , both drivers breaking the lap record with 56.6
seconds. Losing 2nd gear and an engine flat spot meant it was
Hawker who settled for second place , Marshall restoring the
usual order with another masterly display. Strawson again was
3rd and Mick Hill’s new Beetle-Chevy 6th amongst the others.
Trouble was brewing however as the Chimp had been racing
under appeal having failed scrutineering at the Thruxton round.
The Challenger: Colin Hawker - VW
Fastback-3.0 DFV ‘the DFVW’. The
Toleman entered car was an early Gordon
Murray designed chassis having raced
as the open ‘Duckhams special’ sports
prototype at LeMans. With a F1 Cosworth
DFV engine giving around 460 bhp bought
from Ken Tyrrell this car was described by
Autosport as both ‘twitchy’ and ‘superbly
spectacular’! Hawker had easily won a BRDC race here the month before. Overheating problems in qualifying caused new air vents to be
added just above those enormous rear wheels.
The Dark-Horse: Jonathan Buncombe - Hillman Super Imp-2.0 FVD ‘the Chimp’. This was so called as it was a Chevron B19 sports
car with an Imp body attached. Chassis 71-09 having been raced by John Lepp in the 1971 European Sports cars and then by John
Gray and Ian Harrower in some 10 world sportscar rounds amongst others. The rare FVD engine gave 270 horses enough to place this
lightweight racer to 4/100th of a second
behind Marshall in qualifying. Beautiful
prepared by new owner Tony Wadsworth
this was the cars second race as a Saloon
, having already shown its potential against
Marshall at Thruxton the previous October.
Two issues had sparked controversy and a reminder that even
in the liberal world of supersaloons there were still some rules
to adhere to.The rear spoiler was one issue but the other one
was more fundamental. The Imp body had been crafted to fit
the wheelbase of the Chevron chassis and had pushed the rules
about ‘the wheelbase being perscribed by the manufacturer’ to
it’s breaking point.
Rightly or wrongly the Chimp was excluded and in time
would return back to racing elsewhere as a full Chevron again.
Enthusiasts still debate the Chimp 40 years on, a tribute to a
ground breaking car that only raced 3 times. Jonathan Buncombe
commented recently...
‘The rules stated when we built the car that the silhouette had
to remain the same above the centre line of the wheels. Mid
season after beating Baby Bertha on the Gp circuit at Silverstone,
Vauxhall and the rule makers changed the rules to state the
wheels came into the silhouette. So we were out. Such a shame
as we built the car with very little money after building (with Dave
Brodie) the Brodie Buncombe Capri, which was a disaster. We
took an out of date Chevron that nobody wanted and turned it into
a saloon car which was much easier and more cost effective than
trying to turn a saloon car into a racing car!!’
Round 4 (July 4th): The Supersaloon boys were back 4 weeks
later again on the club circuit , minus the Chimp pending its
tribunal hearing. This time the day belonged to the DFVW
‘Hawker was in devastating form and completely overshadowed
the rest, winning as he pleased, also lopping a further 0.4s off
the lap record he shared with Marshall’. Winning by a huge 34
seconds and setting a new lap record of 56.2 seconds (103
mph) after Gerry Marshall had a rare engine blow up in a cloud of
smoke. 2nd and 3rd on the day were both the ex-Mick Hill Capris,
Martin Birrane’s Frox Jeans car just pipping Tony Strawson in the
older car by 2/10th.
After that Marshall won the rounds at Combe and Mallory to
retain the championship from nearest challenger Nick Whiting,
whose Escort was more suited to the twistier tracks. These cars
and drivers remain legends in supersaloons from this era and are
discussed today by enthusiasts. On the controversial Chimp car
Autosport’s writer Marcus Pye summed up with ‘Not particularly
‘Impudent,’ but effective in Jonathan Buncombe’s skilled hands.
The imagination which went into the Chimp inspired many others
to seek solutions with more realistic wheelbases to suit the
regulations. Skoda’s S110R cope fitted the bill perfectly.’
Dave Smith
Round 1 (May 9th): 3500 fans were
entertained by supersaloon racing at its
best as Buncombe and Marshall put on
a fabulous ‘David v Goliath’ show for 10
laps of the Grand Prix circuit. Marshall’s
huge Firenza blasting ahead down the
straights only for Buncombe to close up
with nimble and calculated driving under

races 6 & 10 (2 x 15 Minutes) Sunday
cScc Special Saloons & modsports
Relatively speaking, May 1st is late to start a racing
season, though arranged deliberately in the hope of
providing a nice dry series opener for the famous
CSCC Special Saloons & Modsports Series, so
that these awesome cars can equally flex muscle
and demonstrate their agility too. The benefit
of hybrids that come with complex alternative
suspension designs, cleverly grafted into barely
recognizable factory silhouettes, with no two cars
really the same…
Brothers Ricky and Danny Morris return with
their successful Cosworth Turbo Peugeot 309,
which really suits the National circuit layout,
with podium finishes in the last couple of years
here, but not without competition for sure. Steven Moss is not
only still revelling in his end of season win at Donington last,
the car has been even further developed over the winter with
regular Facebook updates documenting the little green Anglia’s
intentions to continue domination. The Crabtree/Abrahams RSR
Escort has also been in the gym and pumped some iron in the
turbo department we hear, so watch out for Wayne punching
above his cc weight.
Its not always brute and brawn that dominates with this series,
so don’t be surprised to see the little shiny red Elan Modsport of
Paul Sibley tantalizing the Class A cars up front and putting the
cat right amongst the pigeons.
This is the 5th year since the reincarnation of this series, and an
early Class-A favorite was always the Chris Isaacs big V8 Moggy
Minor, though missed over the past two seasons with other racing
commitments. However, new owner Craig Percy has kindly returned
the car to the field and is certain to excite the series with this every
bit gorgeous looking car. Terry Nicholls spent 2015 getting rid of
‘new-car’ gremlins, so his awesome Castrol liveried Turbo Supra
(front cover) is set to start demonstrating some of his years of
experience, Terry celebrating his 71st Birthday exactly one month
ago and still hot to trot after 50 years in motorsport. Series regular
David Beatty is absent for this round only with his class A Prelude
not quite ready, instead he was out yesterday with his Ginetta G50
in the CSCC New Millennium race.
We are proud to welcome back Northern Saloons man Tony Ellis
with his rapid RX7, after his virgin flight with us at Donington last

season really got his juices flowing for this great series, he has
returned for some more fun.
Taking advantage of the ‘all-steel-bodied’ (ASB*) rule allowance
of dropping one class, is Kenny Coleman in his Jagermeister
replica 5000cc V8 Capri, after a year away and racing abroad
etc. Also in Class-C, Chris Southcott takes a full time seat in his
fathers space frame Midget while a new version is being finished
off for dad as we speak. Lee Jones also gets a big welcome
back to this class with his famous Toyota powered space framed
Mini, after a year out waiting for bits from abroad, Lee also raced
yesterday in the CSCC Meteor Suspension Open Series.
Class-D will certainly be entertaining once again, with both
favorites Tony Paxman in his beautiful MK1 Escort (ASB*) and
Tim Cairns in his ‘Steamroller’ Midget returning to battle as they
usually do, swapping places to thrill the crowd. Gary Cole will be
turning heads with his rather unusual Citroen BX (ASB*) which
has been competing since the early 90’s including several in the
original Thundersaloon days!
Class-D also sees the long awaited return of the Minton family’s
Escort Mk2 (ASB*) now with a BDG, the car returning to the
family after many years in other hands, originally pedalled in the
early 80’s by brothers Steve and Dale, now with Steve’s son Dan
trying his hand. Jeremy Burgoyne boasts another Ford Escort
(ASB*), though this time a Zetec powered MK1, Jeremy being a
full time competitor in the series over the past couple of years,
has become one of the series true regulars.
Neil Duke brings his BDG powered Ford Anglia (ASB*) this time,
while another is under construction we hear along with a GT40
project too.
Kevin Cooper is the man to watch in Class-E, this time in one of
his Imps, though an interesting recently acquired stable of cars
will see him branching out in races to come, hopefully before the
end of the season.
So folks, sit back and be entertained by these weird and
wonderful contraptions of the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s.

race 7 (40 Minutes with pit stop) Sunday
cScc Adams & Page Swinging Sixties Group 1
This is our second race of the season and we are hoping that the
weather is kinder than the Saturday at Snetterton.
Snetterton required very careful driving from all of you. You
deserve credit for managing to keep away from each other. There
was no ‘car to car’ contact during either of the Swinging Sixties
races, superb driving.
Group 1 was won overall by first time ever race winner
David Franks (186) in his Mini, David and his team
successfully raise money for the Fire fighters charity
http:// firefightersraceteam.com/ and this win was the
result of years of hard work and sacrifice. Franks was hotly
pursued by the 2nd place team of Gary Makein/Ian Everett
(37) who needed just one more lap in the weather shortened
race to be on terms and perhaps get their BMW 1502 ahead.
Commiserations go to Tim Cairns (1) who had a commanding
lead before sliding off and impacting a barrier, damaging the
Sprite and one of Tim’s toes! The incident happened when
overtaking a lapped car who had courteously let Tim pass on
the more slippery racing line. The Frogeye will return at Brands
Hatch.
Keith Waters (7) efforts during both qualifying and the race
earned him the ‘Adams & Page Driver Of The Day’ award as
nominated by our race commentator, with Keith receiving a £50
voucher from our series sponsor.
Here at Silverstone you have a much wider track, with straights
that will give the powerful cars room to ‘stretch their legs’. The
more nimble cars will have to take their lines through the corners
as precisely as they can. Richard Merrell (77) enjoyed his first
outing with the CSCC so is back for more, this time with drafted
in pit crew from the Fiat Coupe Club to help during his pit stop.
If you are new to this circuit, savour the feel of the place. I know
you are not on the full Grand Prix track, but you are on part of it,
so enjoy yourselves!

Snetterton - 9th APril 2016
The rain set in for the CSCC’s first Race Meeting of 2016
and both practice and the race were run in wet and slippery
conditions. It was great to see a total of ten Lotus Elans entered
and Richard Wheeler, who is new to the Adams & Page Swinging

drivers, who are new to this series, were Phil Otley in the orange
Reliant Scimitar, Neil Myers with his pretty Lotus Elite, Mel Taylor
and Mike Dowd/Jeremy Cooke in their respective Lotus Elans.
Richard Wheeler, having started on pole position had a problem
on the first lap and dropped down the field. So, after the first lap,
it was the Ginetta of Halstead and McPherson in the lead, closely
followed by Mark Campbell in his TR6. This battle continued until
the pit-stops began. Meanwhile, further down the field, Raymond
Barrow in the Chevrolet Camaro and Richard Wheeler, having
recovered from his early problem, were working their way steadily
up through the pack and, at the chequered flag it was Raymond
Barrow who won by 16 seconds from Richard Wheeler. In third
place was Malcolm Johnson in the Lotus Europa followed home
by the Elan of Mike Dowd and Jeremy Cooke.
There were very good performances from Jon Wolfe and Dave

exciting drive in poor conditions, and Mike McBride, who started

17th on the grid, finished 9th and won his class, which must have
made the long journey from Jersey worthwhile. The Keevil father
and son team had a successful race in their Lotus Elan S3, a great
relief to finish in 8th place, since they had taken the
engine and gearbox out 3 times in the last 2 weeks!
Gail Hill had started well in her Ford Mustang,
reasoning that her Mustang was sliding due to the
standing water. When the sensation became worse
after a couple of laps she retired discovering a
puncture, a rare occurrence in racing.

race 9 (40 Minutes with pit stop) Sunday
cScc Advantage motorsport Future classics
Our season opener at Snetterton on 10th April greeted us with
unrelenting rain. This was the first time in the history of the series
that we have had separate overall winners for 1970s and 1980s
cars, as well as classes separating the two decades.
Pole position was taken by Tom Brenton in his Ford Sierra XR8
(80s) and at the start he led away leaving a plume of spray behind.
This wasn’t to put Alec Livesley in his Jensen Healey (70s) off as
by half way round he squeezed past and into the lead. The rain then
made its move as both Alec and Tom slid off before recovering to
the track. This allowed Will Plant to put his Morgan at the front and
he continued on his way to the mandatory pit stops. Unfortunately
for Will, he picked up a penalty for a pit stop speed transgression
and emerged 10 second behind Alec. For three straight laps Will
closed the gap until he unfortunately went into Riches too hard and
slid into the gravel and retirement. This allowed Alec to take the win
on the road and for the 1970s group from Tom, who was recovering
some way back, taking 2nd on the road and 1st for the 1980s
group.. Despite the treacherous conditions, only 4 cars failed to
finish and no car on car contact was reported.
Mark Lucock’s (16) skills during the event, securing a class win
during the race earned him the ‘Advantage Motorsport Driver Of
The Day’ award as nominated by our race commentator, with Mark
receiving a £50 voucher from our series sponsor.

race 11 (60 Minutes with pit stop) Sunday
cScc mintex classic K Series
What a difference a day makes - Saturday at Snetterton was very
wet whereas Sunday dawned with a touch of frost and blue sunny
skies. Excellent racing weather and a dry track.
John Davison qualified his TVR Griffith on pole with a 2.15
followed by Nick Atkins and James Barclay’s Elan 26R, David
Holroyd’s Elan S1 and Joe Ward and Richard Bull in a TVR
Grantura followed by a lovely mixed grid of 60’s cars Jaguar E
Type, Ford Falcons, Mustangs, Healey 3000s, MGBs, Ginetta
G12, BMW 1600, Marcos 1800, Reliant Sabre 6, Lotus Elite
and a 1954 TR2.
The rolling start had the Atkins/Barclay Elan in the lead
followed by the Davison Griffith and Holroyd’s Elan in third
until pit stop time when the Griffith took the lead only to
suffer a gear box problem and leave the track at Riches.
Meanwhile further down the order the Goff’s Elan, Ward/
Bull Grantura and Henderson/Sadler Falcon were changing
places. The Marcos of Richard Skinner which had electrical
problems during qualifying and qualified down at 21st
rapidly climbed through the pack to 4th before succumbing
again and retired.

Meanwhile back at the front there was an exciting series of final
laps as Holroyd’s persistence began to pay off and he began to
haul in the Atkins Elan and eventually overtook it to take the lead
three laps from the end to take the winners laurels. Third were
Ward and Bull in their Grantura, followed by Elliot Norris in a Ford
Falcon, the Goff’s Elan, the Gray’s E Type and the rest of the field.
Silverstone is another ex-airfield track with long straights although
much shorter than Snetterton (the previous race meeting) and there
are fewer bends. This should favour the big machinery, Mustangs,
TVR Griffith and E Types. The John Bussel/Alex Thistlethwayte
Mustang could be a favourite. David Holroyd will have a 30 second
penalty from his win at Snetterton, Mark Halstead and Stuart
McPherson are out for the first time in their Elan which is always
quick and the Grays will be competitive in their E Type too.
David Holroyd’s efforts during the race earned him the ‘Mintex
Driver Of The Day’ award as nominated by our race commentator,
with David receiving a £50 voucher from our series sponsor.
