Beginning in April: Awakening Your
Senses to Open to Your Creativity, a
Skanda Workshop with Marion Secor
Series 1: Tactile senses
Series 2: Olfactory senses
These intimate workshops for 4-6 people are designed for
seasoned artists and writers as well as those yearning to explore
their creativity for the first time. Participants experience an
awakening of the senses that takes them deep within and sparks
a new creativity. Starting with touch, each workshop will focus
on one sense, inviting participants to awaken that sensual
experience as a pathway deep into the self and into creativity.
Activities include light stretching and yoga, walks on the
magnificent property at Skanda, creative time in Skanda’s cozy
artists’ studio, guided sessions with teacher Marion Secor, and
facilitated interactions with the exquisite animals who live on
Skanda.
Workshops run monthly. For dates and information,
[email protected], or call 315-815-5056 or
818-854-9794.

Film—Lyme Disease: A Silent Epidemic
Wednesday, April 29th at 2:00 and 7:00 pm
In this documentary, Chantal Perrin, a documentary
filmmaker from France, tells the story of how people across
the world are getting sick and how our health care systems
continue to deny the existence of this growing medical threat,
leading to widespread suffering and disability.
This film highlights the politics of Lyme disease, the
unreliability of testing, the rapidly spreading and multi-systemic
nature of tick-borne illness, and how worldwide research is
being hampered by social-political economic challenges. Made
clear is that patients are suffering as the scientific community
battles about the etiology and treatment of this disease, and
that “we rapidly need to come to a clear scientific consensus,
not a consensus of denial.”
Taking no sides, Lyme Disease: A Silent Epidemic explores
the hidden side of this issue. 53 minutes.

4.In a large bowl, combine cabbage strips and salt. Use your
hands to massage and break up cabbage, and combine it with
the salt. Strips should begin to wilt after 5-10 minutes as their
structure breaks down. Reserve the cabbage liquid.
5.Once cabbage is limp and watery, transfer to your fermenting
containers, making sure container is big enough so there is
extra space for the fermenting process. Pour excess liquids
into storing container.
6.Pack down the sauerkraut so there are no air bubbles and
it is submerged in its own liquid.
7.Cover cabbage with a smaller jar that’s been filled with
beans or marbles for added weight. Again, this is to keep the
cabbage submerged in brine.
8.Place cloth over the top of mason jar and secure with
twine. The beginning of the fermentation process entails that
the cabbage be left uncovered; the cloth prevents bacteria and
particles from landing in the jars.
9.Leave uncapped mason jars at room temperature (our of
direct sunlight) for at least 4 days, pressing down occasionally
so cabbage stays covered by liquid.
10.After four days, begin tasting sauerkraut until it is to your
liking. Then remove weighted jars, cap and refrigerate for up
to 6 months. Enjoy!
Note: Bubbles and/or white bacteria developing on cabbage
are a sign of healthy growth and can be removed without worry.

Homemade
Sauerkraut
If you love the tangy and
sour taste of sauerkraut,
you’ll love how easy it is to
make at home! Requiring only
two ingredients, this dish is
a product of fermentation
and, though it takes time and
patience, it’s surprisingly
easy to make. Sauerkraut is
the result of good bacteria
converting sugars into lactic
acid in a sealed environment
over time, that acts as a
natural preservative of fresh
ingredients. It’s an acquired
taste, but you’ll love it and the
whole family will love making
it—it’s dinner and the kids’ science project in one!
Ingredients: Yields 1-1 1/2 quarts
•1 medium head cabbage (2-2 1/2 pounds), cored and shredded
•1 1/2 tablespoons kosher salt
•air tight containers or mason jars
•smaller jars as added weight
•beans or marbles
•cloth
•twine
Directions
1.Start by cleaning all of your utensils, including washing
your hands thoroughly.
2.Wash your cabbage to rid it of any dirt or particles. Cut
cabbage in half, then into quarters: core and slice into wedges.
3.Very thinly slice each wedge (across) into skinny strips;
it should look like you’re making coleslaw.

The Fate Of Two Atoms

together. This type of experiment, which was carried out with
photons around thirty years ago, had so far been impossible to
perform with matter, due to the extreme difficulty of creating
and manipulating pairs of indistinguishable atoms. The work
is published in the journal Nature dated 2 April 2015.
The notion of indistinguishable particles (1), mentioned as
early as 1924 by Bose and Einstein, lies at the heart of some
of the most perplexing features of quantum mechanics. One
such emblematic feature, observed experimentally nearly 30
years ago by Hong, Ou and Mandel, involves photons and a
semi-transparent mirror (when a photon is sent towards either
side of the mirror, it has a fifty percent chance of passing
through it and the same percentage chance of being reflected).
If two identical photons are sent towards opposite sides of the
mirror, they can be seen to emerge from one side or the other,
but always together. In other words, it appears impossible for
the two photons to go their own separate ways.
Now, for the first time, physicists at the Laboratoire Charles
Fabry have demonstrated this phenomenon with particles of
matter, namely helium-4 atoms, instead of particles of light.
By combining pairs of atoms on the equivalent (for matter) of
a semi-transparent mirror (2), the researchers observed that
when two identical atoms arrive at the same time they always
emerge together, just as photons do. This result is the irrefutable
signature of destructive quantum interference: the process in
which two atoms are simultaneously reflected, and the one in
which they are simultaneously transmitted, cancel each other out.
The main obstacle that the researchers managed to overcome
was that of creating pairs of indistinguishable atoms and
manipulating them. To do this, they first produced a BoseEinstein condensate (3) containing around 100,000 atoms of
helium-4. They succeeded in controlling collisions between
the particles so as to produce pairs of indistinguishable atoms,
which emerged from this very cold gas at an average rate of one
every 30 seconds. The team then manipulated the atoms using
laser beams in order to achieve the equivalent of the optical
setup in the experiment that Hong, Ou and Mandel performed
with photons. To characterize the effect of interference, the

researchers staggered the moment of arrival of the two atoms
at opposite sides of the mirror. After tens of hours of recording,
they were able to verify that, when the two arrivals are separated
by more than about a hundred microseconds, each atom goes
its own way, whereas when arrivals are closer together they
tend to emerge from the same side. The effect is at a maximum
when the atoms arrive simultaneously.
As well as confirming a surprising prediction of quantum
mechanics, the experiment demonstrates the tremendous
progress achieved in recent years in controlling sources of atoms
at the quantum scale. Thanks to the extremely sophisticated
manipulation of pairs of atoms, this work demonstrates their
potential for application in the field of quantum information,
which consists in using the specific characteristics of quantum
physics for more efficient processing and more secure
communication of information.
1 Indistinguishable particles are particles that are strictly
identical and in exactly the same state (for instance, having
the same speed and, for photons, identical wavelength and
polarization).
2 A Bragg mirror, i.e. a light wave from which atoms can
rebound.
3. A Bose-Einstein condensate is a gas cooled to a very low
temperature, in which atoms ‘condense’: they no longer display
random motion in all directions, and progressively enter the
same quantum state. Since they lose their individual nature,
they are described as a single macroscopic object, described
by a single wave function.

“All species of sea turtles are endangered or threatened under
the Endangered Species Act; knowing their distribution is an
essential part of protecting them. With a better understanding
of swimming behavior in these yearlings we can make better
predictions about where they go and what risks they might
encounter,” said Dr. Nathan Putman, lead author of this new
study and sea turtle biologist with NOAA’s Southeast Fisheries
Science Center in Miami.
Upon hatching, young sea turtles swim offshore and disperse
with the help of ocean currents. The turtles are rarely observed
during the next two to ten years or so, but prior studies suggest
that at least some reside among mats of seaweed, such as
Sargassum, that provide shelter and habitat in the open sea.

Not much is known about these juveniles’ movements during
this time (researchers dub it the “lost years”), but it has been
widely assumed that turtles simply drift with ocean currents.
Putman worked with Dr. Kate Mansfield, director of the
University of Central Florida’s Marine Turtle Research Group,
to challenge this long-existing hypothesis. Mansfield placed
specially designed solar-powered tags on 24 green & 20
Kemp’s ridley wild-caught sea turtle toddlers in the Gulf of
Mexico. The tags were tracked by satellite for a short period
of time before shedding cleanly from the turtle shells (max.
2-3 months). Next to the turtles, Mansfield deployed small,
carefully-weighted/passively-drifting surface buoys that were
also tracked by satellite.
When the drifter tracks were compared to the sea turtles’

movements, the researchers found that the turtles’ paths differed
significantly from the passive drifters. Using observed and
modeled ocean current conditions, they found a difference of
distance between the turtles and drifters to be as much as 125
miles in the first few days. In nearly every instance, the toddlers’
swimming behavior appears to help them reach or remain in
favorable ocean habitats.
“The results of our study have huge implications for better
understanding early sea turtle survival and behavior, which may
ultimately lead to new and innovative ways to further protect
these imperiled animals,” said Mansfield.
She added, “What is exciting is that this is the first study to
release drifters with small, wild-caught yearling or neonate sea
turtles in order to directly test the ‘passive drifter’ hypothesis
in these young turtles. Our data show that one hypothesis
doesn’t, and shouldn’t, fit all, and that even a small degree of
swimming or active orientation can make a huge difference in
the dispersal of these young animals.”

Leadership: Politics And The
Ultimate Costs
April 10, 2015: The U.S. Army is publicizing the fact
that several years of budget cuts are having a major impact
on the ability of the army to go overseas and fight effectively.
Since 2012 the army has reduced its strength by 98,000 and
82 percent of that was from the active duty troops. The army
has shut down 13 combat brigades and retired 800 aircraft
with nearly 90 percent from active duty units. Only a third of
combat brigades are ready for operations while the army, with
enough money, could get that up to 70 percent combat ready.

Much of this comes after a decade of huge budgets, intense
combat operations and expansion in general. The army made
the most of all that and replaced a lot of Cold War era weapons
and equipment ahead of schedule. Combat experience levels
for NCOs and officers reached record peaks. Reductions were
expected one fighting died down in Iraq and Afghanistan and
much of the remaining budget was shifted to SOCOM (Special
Operations Command). But the army feels that if politicians
would allow the military to shut down unneeded bases over
half a billion dollars a year would be saved and that would
go far in dealing with the readiness, manning and continuing
weapons and equipment updates. Similar efficiencies could be
obtained if there was less political interference in what the army
buys and where it builds bases and equipment. Such reforms
are unlikely and the army is pointing out the ultimate costs.

It turns out sea turtles, even at a tender 6-18 months of
age, are very active swimmers. They don’t just passively drift
in ocean currents as researchers once thought. NOAA and
University of Central Florida researchers say it’s an important
new clue in the sea turtle “lost years” mystery. Where exactly
turtles travel in their first years of life, before returning to
coastal areas as adults to forage and reproduce, has puzzled
scientists for decades.

Korea: We Got Scrap And
Nukes To Keep Us Warm
April 8, 2015: North Korea is more frequently treating the
families of refugees the same as legal migrants who misbehave.
This makes sense to North Korean leaders. After all the illegal
migrants (refugees) are misbehaving (by not returning as
ordered) in the same way as legal migrants so they should be
punished the same way. The legal migrants are part of what
amounts to a slave labor program that has become a major
source of foreign exchange. This is basically the export of North
Korean workers which has gone from 60,000 men and women
in 2014 to 100,000 in 2015. The government takes up to 90
percent of the wages these men and women earn outside the
country (mainly in Russia and China) and holds the workers’
families hostage in case the worker does not return home when
ordered. If someone does not come back, their families are sent
to prison camps. This is increasingly happening to the children
of those who mysteriously “disappear” and are believed to have
fled across the border. For most people sent to prison camps it
means an early and unpleasant death. For this reason most of

the exported workers are older men with children. But many
of the refugees are younger and so far the government is only
punishing adult (over 18) children of refugees. Meanwhile the
number of workers outside the country is nearly triple what
it was before since Kim Jong Un took over in 2011. Inside
North Korea there is also a lot of slave labor in the form of
prisoners rented out to firms. The most common source is the
Labor Training Camps. These are for those sentenced to short
(under six months) sentences for minor crimes. Usually these
prisoners are rented out to work on construction sites or farms.
In effect the profits from all this forced labor help to maintain
the economic rewards program North Korean leaders have
been depending on more and more to guarantee the loyalty
and efficiency of the bureaucracy (managers, secret police and
intelligence operatives) that keep the Kim family in power.
A recent opinion poll among North Korean who had escaped
and reached South Korea showed that 42 percent left to seek
freedom (economic and otherwise) while only 28 percent left to
avoid the possibility of starving to death. This reflects the fact
that it is expensive (bribes and smuggler fees) to leave North
Korea and only those who have accumulated (by North Korean
standards) a lot of money can make the attempt. Meanwhile
these refugees are critical of the South Korean government run
resettlement training program. The refugees see this program
as unrealistic and created by clueless bureaucrats (which North
Korea has plenty of).
The North Korea government has decided, or been forced
to, accommodate the growing corruption in its bureaucracy
and secret police by tolerating certain forms of economic
corruption. Thus officials (bureaucrats or police) inspecting
the many legal free markets are allowed to keep much of the
stuff they confiscate (because of some legal violation). There

is a lot of leeway in to what extent taking bribes will get you
sent to prison camp. The understanding is that these corrupt
practices will be tolerated as long as the officials concerned
maintain their loyalty to the Kim dictatorship and refuse bribes
for things that threaten Kim rule. The downside of this is that
many government employees (including low ranking soldiers,
armed or unarmed) go around “enforcing laws” (they have no
responsibility for) just to get bribes or “seize” illegal goods. This
sort of behavior is causing more and more popular discontent.
Meanwhile North Korean bureaucrats continue to come up
with new legal ways to destroy the economy. A recent example
was the decision to apply more pressure (the threat of serious
punishment) to local officials who do not meet higher quotas for
the annual scrap metal drive. For years this program rewarded
participants who scrounge up the largest amounts of unneeded
metal for recycling. Worsening economic conditions prompted
senior officials to push the quotas much higher and threaten
local officials with severe penalties for not making the higher
quotas. That resulted in metal that is definitely not scrap being
collected as scrap. Thus a lot of equipment waiting for repairs
(often because of a currently unavailable part) is now totally
useless because it has been “scrapped.” This form of abuse
has reached critical levels on farms where a lot of essential
equipment was “scrapped” this year and even if spare parts
became available a lot of farmers must now resort to preindustrial methods (lots of human labor) to prepare the fields
and plant crops. This will mean lower yields and physically
exhausted (and very angry) farmers.
Another poorly thought out program is the reforestation effort.
Since the 1990s illegal tree cutting has become increasingly
common in North Korea as people sought fuel with which
to survive the cold weather and increasing electric and coal
shortages. Satellite photos show the sharp difference between
forestation in the north and south. South Korea is the only nation
on the planet to have succeeded at artificial reforestation since
World War II. Other nations (mainly in the West) have regrown
depleted forests but usually as a result of rural populations

moving to urban areas over many decades and allowing forests
to regrow in abandoned fields and settlements. But in areas
where huge areas have been stripped of trees, that solution can
take centuries, not decades, to work. Both Koreas were heavily
deforested in the last two centuries but South Korea fixed the
problem while in North Korea it got worse. Even North Korea
recognizes this and is willing to adopt the techniques South
Korea has used and try to replace its depleted northern forests.
China is taking the lead here in order to make North Korea less
of an economic basket case and thus able to halt the damage
to forests. The problem in the north is that until there are real
economic reforms and higher living standards reforestation will
not succeed. During the cold weather people will continue to
risk arrest to collect firewood from wherever they can to avoid
death from intense cold.
Yet another source of tension between China and North Korea
is North Korea arresting Chinese doing business in North Korea
and accusing them of spying for South Korea. While some of
those arrested may be guilty, most could also be considered
spies for China. Any Chinese citizen travelling to North Korea
can expect to be called in by the Chinese government to be
debriefed by an intelligence analyst. To China this is normal,
to North Korea it is espionage and that is punishable by death.
The North Koreans are very aware of the network of Chinese
spies inside North Korea. China long considered Chinese
citizens immune from arrest and prosecution for spying but

that is now changing, with the North Koreans using “they
are South Korean spies” as an excuse to damage the Chinese
intelligence network in North Korea. This, it is believed, would
make it more difficult for China to stage a coup against a North
Korean government that is increasingly unpopular in China.
April 7, 2015: American defense officials believe that North
Korea has mastered the technology to build a nuclear weapon
that will work on a ballistic missile. The Chinese apparently
agree as in 2013 China joined the international effort to ban
weapons exports to North Korea. In particular this was directed
at the nuclear weapons program in the north and was expected
to delay, at the very least, the development of a working
warhead. The Chinese ban meant that many industrial items
North Korea needs to make a workable nuclear warhead are
no longer easily available from Chinese manufacturers. This
was critical if North Korea was to “weaponize” their nuclear
device design to work in a missile (or even an aircraft bomb).
Russia had earlier made it very difficult for North Korea to
obtain Russian warhead tech. In the past Russia had allowed
older ballistic missile tech to be sold to North Korea, but since
2010 has stopped allowing any nuclear warhead stuff out. The
same with technical assistance from Pakistan, which was helped
by China to develop its nuclear warhead equipped missiles. The
Chinese have apparently persuaded the Pakistanis to rebuff
North Korean offers to buy warhead tech. For North Korea the
biggest obstacle to having a useable nuclear weapon is a reliable
warhead design. Testing such a design without actually firing
a live nuke into the ocean requires another bunch of tech (and
high-performance computers) that North Korea does not have.
The North Koreans have been resourceful about situations like
this in the past and were apparently able to build some of the
banned industrial items themselves. That did not take as long
as earlier estimated. Illegally obtaining some key chemicals and

high-tech electronics was also apparently done more quickly
than anticipated. Before the recent announcement it was believed
it would be another 5-10 years before they would have a working
warhead for their missiles, or at least one compact and reliable
enough to be dropped from an aircraft. The new revelations
indicate that the North Korea weapons smuggling operation
has again succeeded in obtaining forbidden tech. Then again,
maybe not and it may all be paranoia in high places. There is
no real proof North Korea has a working nuclear warhead that
can survive use on a ballistic missile.
The U.S. also believes that the North Korean the Taepodong
(KN-08) ICBM is ready for service and is launched from a large
truck. This mobility makes it more difficult to find and destroy.
The Taepodong has a range of 9,000 kilometers, meaning it
can reach the west coast of the United States. While mobile
the Taepodong is a three stage liquid fueled rocket and that
means hours are needed to get one ready for launch. The North
Korean has long sought to develop an ICBM that can hit the
U.S. with a nuclear weapon. In response to that the United
States has already deployed an anti-missile system in Alaska
specifically to stop any such North Korean attack. For the
North Koreans to launch a successful attack they would need
at least a dozen Taepodong missiles and be able to launch them
simultaneously. If that happened, one or two might get through.
But since the Taepodong is a liquid fueled missile, the lengthy
launch preparations would alert the United States, who could
then use ICBMs or bombers to destroy the Taepodongs before

they were ready to go. Thus as a threat to the United States,
the Taepodongs are a failure. But the next stage of ICBM
development involves using solid fuel rockets, which can be
launched without any warning. That is what North Korea is
working towards. Ally Iran has made considerable progress in
developing large solid fuel rocket motors and that technology
would be available to North Korea. Iran got this tech from
Pakistan, who got it from China who got it from Russia which
stole it from the United States.
April 5, 2015: South Korea has regained its leadership in
shipbuilding. In the first three months of 2015 South Korean
firms received orders for 2.31 million tons (CGT or compensated
gross tonnage) while second place Japan received 1.62 million
tons and China 1.35. In 2012 South Korea lost its decade
long battle with China to retain its lead in shipbuilding. That
was because of a five year depression in the world market for
shipping. This caused South Korean ship exports to fall 30
percent in 2012, to $37.8 billion. China, helped by government
subsidies, saw ship exports fall only 10.3 percent, leaving China
with $39.2 billion in export sales. The Chinese government has

also been giving its ship builders lots of new orders for warships,
which made its yards more profitable and better able to beat
South Korea on price. The Chinese government also provides
its ship builders with more loans, allowing the builders to offer
better credit terms to customers. South Korea was still ahead of
China in total orders for ships. China was not able to keep its
lead as South Korea not only builds cheap but also does more
complex work to higher quality standards. Chinese shipyards
have been laying off workers because the new orders have been
falling. Meanwhile South Korea, which always had the lead
over China in building high-tech ships, is getting more orders
for these more expensive (and profitable) designs.
April 3, 2015: North Korea test fired four unguided rockets
out to 140 kilometers off its west coast. This follows similar
“rocket tests” the day before. There has been an increase in this
sort of thing in 2015. In mid-March they fired seven surfaceto-air missiles off its east coast. This followed the firing of
two SCUD ballistic missiles on the 2nd. These firing were
supposed to be a form of protest against joint training exercises
by American and South Korean forces that end on the 24th.
These training exercises are held regularly by the most capable
military forces and the U.S. and South Korea have long done this.
That bothers North Korea a lot because since the 1990s North
Korea has been too poor to keep up in the training department.
These days its nearly one million troops spend most of their
time growing food and working for civilian enterprises to earn
money to pay for fuel and other supplies the government can
no longer afford to provide. North Korea announced these
recent missile “tests” as they usually do without mentioning
that they have a growing number of missiles that are reaching
their expiration date (when too many aging components make
the weapon unreliable) and conducting all these missile and
rocket firing “tests” off the coasts is largely a case of “use it
or lose it” combined with “let’s try and scare our enemies.”
But this sort of thing has been going on for so long that it no
longer has much shock appeal, but it is good training for the
troops who operate these missiles and good for morale when
these launches seem to go well. What is never revealed is if the
guidance systems of these missiles were still functional. The
guidance systems are components most vulnerable to aging and
it is believed that many of these elderly missiles are launched
with the guidance systems disabled so that a guidance system
failure would not turn the missile firing into an obvious failure
(as the missile careened about under the control of a failing
guidance system).

April 1, 2015: In Pakistan police arrested two North Korean
diplomats who were caught illegally selling alcoholic beverages.
In most Moslem countries the sale of alcoholic beverages are
forbidden to very restricted. North Korea diplomats in Pakistan
were caught selling alcohol in 2013 as well. Since the diplomats
have diplomatic immunity all the host country can do is expel
them. North Korea has to deal with this a lot. In March North
Korea apologized to Bangladesh after a North Korean diplomat
was caught trying to smuggle in 27 kg (59.4 pounds with $1.5
million) of gold into Bangladesh. The senior diplomat had
diplomatic immunity and apparently hoped that would protect
his luggage from inspection. In this case it didn’t. North Korean
diplomats are notorious crooks and since the 1990s have been
caught smuggling or distributing drugs and counterfeit currency
as well. More recently they have used their diplomatic immunity
to smuggle illegal items (it is illegal to bring more than two
kg of gold into Bangladesh without declaring it and paying a
fee). In most countries where North Korea ganger diplomats
are most active local police pay special attention to the North
Koreans in general. Other nations react by severely limiting the
number of North Korea diplomats admitted and given diplomatic
immunity. In severe cases the North Korean embassy gets shut
down and all North Koreans expelled. This keeps North Korea
on good behavior, or at least urging its diplomats to try harder
to not get caught. But the gangster diplomats are still a major
source of foreign currency and useful contacts with powerful
foreign gangsters so they remain at work.

March 31, 2015: Japan is extending its economic sanctions
on North Korea until 2017 because North Korea continues to
delay the promised release of details on Japanese citizens North
Korea kidnapped in the late 20th century.
March 30, 2015: China rejected the North Korean effort to
join the AIIB (Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank). South
Korea also applied and was accepted on March 26th. The AIIB
is part of a Chinese effort to build an alternative to Western
dominated financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank.
The AIIB would serve as an option especially for friends of
China in Asia. But the North Korean economy was seen as too
far gone even for the AIIB. This Chinese decision was also seen
as a message to North Korea to do what China wants or continue
to suffer for it. North Korea has been increasingly hostile to
Chinese investments in North Korea, which is counterproductive
since North Korea needs the foreign exchange. Chinese leaders
cannot understand this self-destructive behavior. South Korea,
in contrast, has been very receptive to Chinese investment
and Chinese investors have responded enthusiastically. For
example a Chinese firm paid over a billion dollars in early
2015 to obtain a controlling interest in a major South Korean
insurance company.
March 29, 2015: South Korea has flown most of its citizens
(including diplomatic personnel) out of Yemen, where a civil
war has gotten more intense and there is no government control
in most of the country.
March 26, 2015: It is the fifth anniversary of the 2010
“war” in which a North Korean submarine sunk a South Korea
corvette (eight months later North Korean artillery fired on a
South Korean island and inflicted casualties, something the
north takes credit for). North Korea still will not take credit for
the torpedo attack but South Korea brought up the sunken ship
and displayed fragments of the torpedo that clearly indicated
it was North Korean. North Korea said it was all a conspiracy
to make them look bad.

March 21, 2015: After three years of bickering officials from
South Korea, China and Japan once more met to discuss what
to do with an increasingly dangerous and unpredictable North
Korea. The three also worked a growing list of other disputes
(mainly territorial and economic). The most divisive issue has
been Japanese refusal to admit that it behaved badly during
World War II and the first half of the 20th century. That issue
remains unresolved.
March 20, 2015: The North Korean ambassador to Britain
said on TV that his country had a nuclear warhead for its missiles
and would use them if threatened. This may all be a colossal
bluff but it is an increasingly convincing bluff.
March 19, 2015: South Korea has openly called on China to
stop using diplomatic threats and economic bribes in an effort to
get South Korea to halt the installation of an anti-missile system.
South Korea wants this American THAAD anti-ballistic missile
defense system for protection from North Korean missile attack.
The Chinese would not come right out and say it but they object
mainly because THAAD would also make South Korea less
vulnerable to intimidation by Chinese ballistic missiles. South
Korea openly refused to comply with the Chinese threats and
South Korean public opinion became even more enthusiastic
about the high tech and very expensive (over $100 million per
launcher and associated equipment) THAAD system. China
sees South Korea more of an ally of the United States and a
potential wartime foe than as an ally in attempts to keep North
Korea from doing anything that would cause major economic
and diplomatic problems (like starting a war).
An American navy official said that North Korea is apparently
developing a ballistic missile that can be fired from a submarine.
The U.S. Navy calls this new North Korean missile the KN-11.

I hate Mondays. Today was no exception since it was a
cloudy day with rain in the forecast. Mondays are wash days.
I enjoy hanging my linens on the line in the sun. To top it off,
I was beginning to feel the onslaught of an allergy attack,
which would certainly be worsened by the dryer running most
of the morning
My self-pitying thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of
the telephone back in the other side of the house. “Here it is 7:30
a.m. and someone is calling,” I said to myself as I tripped over
the dog first and then the cat on my way to answer the phone.
“Hello,” I said in a somewhat hoarse but unfriendly voice.
“Grandma?” came the retort.
My heart swelled immediately, and I took in a quick sigh of
relief before I replied. My grandson Noah is in the Marines and
has been stationed in Baghdad but had been given just hours to
pack up and get ready to return to the states. A few hours later,
they cancelled those orders and ordered them back to Baghdad
for an unknown amount of time. My son and his wife were, as I
was, worried about him and anxious to have him home. With all
this running through my head, I finally answered the voice on
the phone with eagerness, “Hey, Sweetheart, where are you?”
“I’m on the way to visit you,” came the reply.
“Are you serious?” I asked in disbelief, “Where are you now?”

“I just left Fort Smith and am heading to Fort Sill with one
of my buddies who lives there. We are traveling in his car.”
“Fort Smith? Fort Sill?” came my retort. I was confused since
he would have been returning to Camp Pendleton, a Marine
base, not an Army base. I said, “Why would you go there?”
There was a pause on the line and I feared I had lost the
connection but finally there was an unsure, “Is Margaret there?”
“No, there is no Margaret here. Who is Margaret?” I replied
as my heart fell.
“Uh,er...uh, I know you won’t believe me but I am in an
automobile traveling to visit my Grandmother and I have her
number on my speed dial. I pushed it and got you. I don’t know
how it happened but believe me, I am sorry,” the young voice
said at the other end of the line.
“Well, you may not believe me,” I replied, “but I have a
grandson who sounds just like you on the phone and always
starts out by saying, Grandma when he calls me. I wanted it
to be him more than you can know.
He has been in Kuwait City then Baghdad and then in Iran
waiting for orders to come home. He got them last week and
was ready to leave and they sent his platoon back to Baghdad.
He is a Marine from Camp Pendleton but lives in Fort Worth,”
I explained.
“This may be a wrong number,” I continued, “but it gives
me a chance to say something to you I would like to say to all
soldiers who have been involved in this war and the frightening
weeks since.
We are all proud of you, one and all, and our hearts have
been praying for you daily and always thinking of your bravery
and the wonderful job you are all doing.”
“You may not be my grandson but you are some lucky
people’s grandson who probably think the same way I do. I am
glad you called, even if it was a wrong number. I felt closer to
my Noah through hearing your voice,” I told him.

“By the way,” he said, “while we are still connected, let
me say thanks to you and all the other grandparents, parents,
siblings, friends and strangers who sent the many cards, pictures,
supplies and well wishes and prayers to us all. We were working
for one cause, together, no matter what branch of the military.
It was the folks at home who got us through and will get your
grandson through.”
“Thank you, for what you have done, for your wonderful
attitude and for your call. It has made me relieved, happy and
touched,” I told him. “Now, call your grandmother and tell her
she has a wonderful grandson.”
Again, he said thanks and the call ended.
My morning became special.
I sat in the chair for a while and tears flowed from my eyes
and my heart. Tears of every emotion you can imagine. I first
felt ashamed for being in a bad mood this morning.
Second, I felt as if I had actually heard from my beloved
grandson. I felt an overwhelming pride for those young and not
so young soldiers and the hardships they endure for strangers.
The risks they take in the name of freedom. I cried a few extra
tears for two 20-year-old babies/wise men who, through a wrong
connection on a cell phone blended into one for a few minutes
to give an aging grandmother a light heart and a warm feeling
of being touched by the spirit of all life.
As I found solace in the events of the morning, I realized I
didn’t even think of asking for his name. For a second I was
upset by this but then I realized, it was meant to be this way.
Now he will always be a voice saying, “Grandma?” and I will
always be that grandma saying, “Where are you?”
Life is sweeter on Mondays now.

Planning and Building Fences
on the Farm

Many innovations have occurred in the fencing industry in
recent years, giving producers an array of options for fences
to confine and protect livestock. Whether used as permanent,
periphery boundaries, temporary pasture dividers or to encircle
a house, fences need careful planning and construction for
efficient usefulness, long life and low maintenance.
Several decisions must be made when installing fencing.
First, what is the fence to be used for?
For example, is it going to be a boundary fence or a crossfence to divide a pasture? Is the fence for sheep, cattle, horses
or something else? What type of fence is best suited and where
should the fence be constructed for maximum effectiveness?
Other considerations include the type, spacing and setting of
posts, gate location and construction, brace post assembly and
installation of stock gaps or cattle guards. This publication is
designed to help in planning a new or renovated fencing system.

“Ma’am,” came his reply,
“I don’t understand some of
the things that happen in this
world. I have never gotten a
wrong number on my speed

another grandmother.
I am more religious since being in Iraq. I have come to know
about faith first hand for the first time in my life. One thing
that has stood out clear among the soldiers I am stationed with
is that it is faith that gets us home. I kinda feel perhaps there
was a reason for this call going to you. It gives me a chance
to tell you a few things.
I was also stationed in Baghdad, also waited for orders to
return home, also was sent back to Baghdad, and now, finally
I am heading home. I am in the Army, however. I am only 20
and dreamed of being a soldier for a long time. It is different
from how I imagined it, and I have had to grow up a lot.
Perhaps this call came to you as a message from your grandson
saying he will also return home safely in the near future.”
“I really believe that,” I told him. “I heard his voice in you
and it gave me joy. It will always be a special call to remember.”

Purpose of the Fence
The first consideration in deciding the best fence is the purpose
for which it will be used. Livestock protection and confinement
are the main reasons for considering fencing, but the fencing
needs for various types (species, age, breed, production system)
of livestock vary widely. Following are some of the livestock
types and situations with special requirements:
Cattle
Most types of fence can be used with cattle, so most cattle
producers assess factors such as expense, ease of construction
and expected life of the fence when considering fencing strategy.
In the past, woven wire and barbed wire were the most common
fence types; however,high-tensile fencing is rapidly gaining
popularity in Tennessee.
Fence height for perimeter cattle fences should be a minimum
of 54 inches.
When bulls are penned separately from cows, special attention
must be paid to construction. Heavy posts with thick-gauge wire
or cables are required, or electric fence may be effectively used.
Fences for handling facilities must be strong enough to
withstand heavy usage, tall enough (60 inches minimum) to
prevent escape, and clearly visible. Treated wood or heavy wire
panel fence are preferred.
Everybody wants to go to heaven; but nobody wants to die.
The road to success is always under construction.
When the past comes knocking, don’t answer. It has nothing
new to tell you.
You know you are getting old when the candles on your
birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.

Sheep
Fences for sheep do not have to be as tall as for cattle,
but sheep have other special requirements. Predator control
is more important. Electric fences are particularly useful for
discouraging predators such as dogs and coyotes. Barbed wire
is not as effective with sheep, as the barbs tend to become
covered with wool.
Horses
Visibility is a necessary characteristic in fencing for
horses. Barbed wire should be avoided because there are
many opportunities for horses to tear their hide on the barbs.
High-tensile wire fences poses a threat to horses because they
may become entangled in the strands. The chance of this can
be decreased if high-tensile fences are made more visible by
placing posts closer together or hanging ribbons or something
else from the wire. Board fences are ideal for horses. Woven
wire also works well, particularly with a single board at the
top so the horses can easily see the fence.

Swine
Swine require strong fences that are built close to the ground
to prevent them from escaping by rooting underneath the fence.
Barbed wire along the ground helps prevent rooting. Fences
need to be no higher than 54 inches. As with cattle-working
pens, fences around swine confinement units are likely to receive
heavy usage. Use heavy materials and sturdy construction for
long life and functionality.
Planning The Fence
Fencing is a costly investment. The location and arrangement
may affect production efficiency, so it makes good sense to plan
before you build. This is true whether you are installing a fence
around the farm or a pasture for the first time, or replacing an
old, worn-out fence. Evaluate existing fences. If they are in
good shape, you may want to plan new fences around them.
If they are old and falling down, it may be cheaper in the long
run to replace them.
Pay attention to water
resources when planning your
fencearrangement. Wise placement
of fences can result in being able to

use the same water source in two, three or even three or more
pastures. Fencing cattle away from ponds and using freezeproof overflow tanks can improve water quality and prevent
disease problems associated with cows standing in the ponds
during the summer. This also prevents injury and death due
to cattle breaking through frozen ponds in the winter. Plans
and information about these types of watering systems may
be found at your local Extension office or through the Soil
Conservation Service.
Locating Permanent Fences
Permanent fences should be well constructed using high
quality materials so they will last a long time with minimum
repairs. A well-constructed permanent fence that surrounds the
farm is essential. It establishes a fixed property line between
you and your neighbors and prevents losses due to livestock
getting killed on the highway or having to pay your neighbors
for livestock damage to their crops. Take care to properly
locate the property line when building boundary fences to
avoid costly mistakes.
Consider permanent fencing around pastures which will be
used year after year and around cropland. These fences will
probably never be moved, so it makes sense to build a wellconstructed, low maintenance fence that will last a long time.
A permanent fence is also a good idea for a lane that gives
livestock access to water.

Locating Temporary Fences
Movable fences are considered temporary fences. They are
normally used for a short period of time, then removed and
used in some other location or stored until needed. They are
easy to build and take down. They cost less than permanent
fences, but they are not as effective and usually will not last
more than one to three years.
They do not take the place of permanent fences, but can be
very beneficial in some instances. Temporary fences are well
suited for controlled grazing situations because pastures can
be divided into a substantial number of individual cells with
minimal labor and cost. They can be moved from year to year
until you decide the field layout that best fits your production
scheme.
Locating Lanes and Gates
A lane is needed to connect livestock buildings, working
facilities and water with every field that eventually may be
pastured. Keep in mind that a permanent pasture located between
other fields can serve as a lane.
To keep gullies from forming on rolling land, plan the lane
to followa terrace or natural ridge. If a well-drained location is
not possible, use movable fences which can be relocated every
few years. Wherever possible, locate gates and passageways for
livestock and equipment in the corner of each field closest to farm
buildings. If you have fields on opposite sides of a road, locate
gates opposite each other so livestock can go directly across.

New Research Sheds Light On
How Popular Probiotic Benefits
The Gut
Date: April 16, 2015
Source: University of Maryland Medical Center/School of
Medicine
In recent years, research into the benefits of gut bacteria
has exploded. Scientists across the globe are examining how
these microbes can help improve health and prevent disease.
One of the most well-known of these is Lactobacillus
rhamnosus GG (LGG). This strain of bacteria, which is part
of many popular probiotic products, has a reputation as a
helpful microbe. Researchers have found evidence that it can
help with intestinal problems, respiratory infections and some
skin disorders. Some research suggests that it may even help
with weight loss.
But a key question has remained unanswered: How does
LGG actually produce benefits?
Now, researchers at the University of Maryland School of
Medicine (UM SOM) have come up with an explanation. It
appears that LGG may act as a facilitator, modifying the activity
of other gut bacteria. This is the first time this mechanism has
been described; the discovery could eventually help scientists
create more effective strategies to foster a healthy gut. The
paper was published in the latest issue of the journal mBio.

Chapter 7 - Continued
“I was expecting you to call, for I heard you had come back
and brought your uncle and aunt with you.”
“We’re here for good and all, this time, Billina,” cried
Dorothy, joyfully. “Uncle Henry and Aunt Em belong to Oz
now as much as I do!”
“Then they are very lucky people,” declared Billina; “for
there couldn’t be a nicer place to live. But come, my dear; I
must show you all my Dorothys. Nine are living and have grown
up to be very respectable hens; but one took cold at Ozma’s
and happy, and I, my dear, am the acknowledged Queen and
Governor of every chicken in Oz, because I’m the eldest and
started the whole colony.”
“You ought to be very proud, ma’am,” said Uncle Henry,
who was astonished to hear a hen talk so sensibly.
“Oh, I am,” she replied. “I’ve the loveliest pearl necklace
you ever saw. Come in the house and I’ll show it to you. And
I’ve nine leg bracelets and a diamond pin for each wing. But
I only wear them on state occasions.”
They followed the Yellow Hen into the house, which Aunt
Em declared was neat as a pin. They could not sit down, because
all Billina’s chairs were roosting-poles made of silver; so they
had to stand while the hen fussily showed them her treasures.
Then they had to go into the back rooms occupied by Billina’s
nine Dorothys and two Daniels, who were all plump yellow
chickens and greeted the visitors very politely. It was easy to
see that they were well bred and that Billina had looked after
their education.
In the yards were all the children and grandchildren of these
eleven elders and they were of all sizes, from well-grown hens
to tiny chickens just out of the shell. About fifty fluffy yellow
youngsters were at school, being taught good manners and

“This is a new idea, that some probiotics may work by
affecting the overall ecosystem of the gut,” said Prof. Fraser.
“Previously we tended to think that LGG and other probiotics
worked directly on the host. I think this finding has many
exciting implications.” For one, Fraser says, it lends support
to the idea that we need to look at the microbes in the gut as
an interconnected ecosystem rather than a series of solitary
bacteria. Modifying the behavior of microbes already in the
gut may be just as important as adding any single species to
this population.
Prof. Fraser and her colleagues used an innovative method for
enumerating gut bacteria; this approach, known as metagenomic
analysis, allows for a much more comprehensive view of what
the microbes are actually doing in a given person’s intestines.
Previous methods do not provide nearly the same level of detail
as this method.
“Dr. Fraser’s study is not only fascinating, but it will help
advance a rapidly emerging research area,” said Dean E. Albert
Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, who is also the vice president for
Medical Affairs, University of Maryland, and the John Z. and

Claire M. Fraser, PhD, professor of medicine at the UM
SOM, as well as director of the Institute for Genome Sciences,
studied the effect of LGG on a group of elderly subjects “This
species of bacteria has a reputation for being really useful to
humans,” says Prof. Fraser. “So we wanted to better understand
how it might work in the human intestine.”
She and her collaborator, Dr. Patricia Hibberd at Massachusetts
General Hospital, tested 12 subjects, who ingested LGG twice
a day for 28 days. She analyzed gut bacteria before and after
this regimen, and found that ingesting LGG led to increases in
several genes that foster several species of gut bacteria, including
Bacteroides, Eubacterium, Faecalibacterium, Bifidobacterium
and Streptococcus. These microbes have been shown to have
a range of benefits in humans, including the promotion of a
healthy immune system. (Fraser notes that LGG may also have
direct effects, in addition to its ability to modify the overall
ecosystem.)

“Did you call both the roosters Daniel?” asked Uncle Henry.
“Yes, indeed. I’ve nine Dorothys and two Daniels; and the
nine Dorothys have eighty-six sons and daughters and over
three hundred grandchildren,” said Billina, proudly.
“What names do you give ‘em all, dear?” inquired the little

“Oh, they are all Dorothys and Daniels, some being Juniors

palace grounds and gardens yet and were eager to get better
acquainted with the marvelous and delightful land in which
they were to live.
“I’ll stay here, and you can go for a walk,” said Dorothy.
“You’ll be perfec’ly safe anywhere, and may do whatever you
want to. When you get tired, go back to the palace and find
your rooms, and I’ll come to you before luncheon is ready.”
So Uncle Henry and Aunt Em started out alone to explore
the grounds, and Dorothy knew that they couldn’t get lost,
because all the palace grounds were enclosed by a high wall
of green marble set with emeralds.
It was a rare treat to these simple folk, who had lived in the
country all their lives and known little enjoyment of any sort,
to wear beautiful clothes and live in a palace and be treated
with respect and consideration by all around them. They were
very happy indeed as they strolled up the shady walks and
looked upon the gorgeous flowers and shrubs, feeling that their
new home was more beautiful than any tongue could describe.
Suddenly, as they turned a corner and walked through a gap
in a high hedge, they came face to face with an enormous Lion,

which crouched upon the green lawn and seemed surprised by
their appearance.
They stopped short, Uncle Henry trembling with horror and
Aunt Em too terrified to scream. Next moment the poor woman
clasped her husband around the neck and cried:
“Save me, Henry, save me!”
“Can’t even save myself, Em,” he returned, in a husky voice,
“for the animile looks as if it could eat both of us an’ lick its
chops for more! If I only had a gun--”
“Haven’t you, Henry? Haven’t you?” she asked anxiously.
“Nary gun, Em. So let’s die as brave an’ graceful as we can.
I knew our luck couldn’t last!”
“I won’t die. I won’t be eaten by a lion!” wailed Aunt Em,
glaring upon the huge beast. Then a thought struck her, and
she whispered, “Henry, I’ve heard as savage beastses can be
conquered by the human eye. I’ll eye that lion out o’ countenance
an’ save our lives.”

“Try it, Em,” he returned, also in a whisper. “Look at him
as you do at me when I’m late to dinner.”
Aunt Em turned upon the Lion a determined countenance
and a wild dilated eye. She glared at the immense beast steadily,
and the Lion, who had been quietly blinking at them, began to
appear uneasy and disturbed.
“Is anything the matter, ma’am?” he asked, in a mild voice.
At this speech from the terrible beast Aunt Em and Uncle
Henry both were startled, and then Uncle Henry remembered that
this must be the Lion they had seen in Ozma’s Throne Room.
“Hold on, Em!” he exclaimed. “Quit the eagle eye conquest
an’ take courage. I guess this is the same Cowardly Lion Dorothy
has told us about.”
“Oh, is it?” she cried, much relieved.
“When he spoke, I got the idea; and when he looked so
‘shamed like, I was sure of it,” Uncle Henry continued.
Aunt Em regarded the animal with new interest.
“Are you the Cowardly Lion?” she inquired. “Are you
Dorothy’s friend?”
“Yes’m,” answered the Lion, meekly. “Dorothy and I are
old chums and are very fond of each other. I’m the King of

Beasts, you know, and the Hungry Tiger and I serve Princess
Ozma as her body guards.”
“To be sure,” said Aunt Em, nodding. “But the King of
Beasts shouldn’t be cowardly.”
“I’ve heard that said before,” remarked the Lion, yawning till
he showed two great rows of sharp white teeth; “but that does
not keep me from being frightened whenever I go into battle.”
“What do you do, run?” asked Uncle Henry.
“No; that would be foolish, for the enemy would run after
me,” declared the Lion. “So I tremble with fear and pitch in as
hard as I can; and so far I have always won my fight.”
“Ah, I begin to understand,” said Uncle Henry.
“Were you scared when I looked at you just now?” inquired
Aunt Em.
“Terribly scared, madam,” answered the Lion, “for at first I
thought you were going to have a fit. Then I noticed you were
trying to overcome me by the power of your eye, and your
glance was so fierce and penetrating that I shook with fear.”
This greatly pleased the lady, and she said quite cheerfully:
“Well, I won’t hurt you, so don’t be scared any more. I just
wanted to see what the human eye was good for.”
“The human eye is a fearful weapon,” remarked the Lion,
scratching his nose softly with his paw to hide a smile. “Had I
not known you were Dorothy’s friends I might have torn you
both into shreds in order to escape your terrible gaze.”
Aunt Em shuddered at hearing this, and Uncle Henry said
hastily:
“I’m glad you knew us. Good morning, Mr. Lion; we’ll
hope to see you again--by and by--some time in the future.”
“Good morning,” replied the Lion, squatting down upon the
lawn again. “You are likely to see a good deal of me, if you
live in the Land of Oz.”
Chapter 8
After leaving the Whimsies, Guph continued on his journey
and penetrated far into the Northwest. He wanted to get to the
Country of the Growleywogs, and in order to do that he must
cross the Ripple Land, which was a hard thing to do. For the
Ripple Land was a succession of hills and valleys, all very steep
and rocky, and they changed places constantly by rippling.
While Guph was climbing a hill it sank down under him and
became a valley, and while he was descending into a valley
it rose up and carried him to the top of a hill. This was very
perplexing to the traveler, and a stranger might have thought
he could never cross the Ripple Land at all. But Guph knew
that if he kept steadily on he would get to the end at last; so he

paid no attention to the changing hills and valleys and plodded
along as calmly as if walking upon the level ground.
The result of this wise persistence was that the General finally
reached firmer soil and, after penetrating a dense forest, came
to the Dominion of the Growleywogs.
No sooner had he crossed the border of this domain when two
guards seized him and carried him before the Grand Gallipoot
of the Growleywogs, who scowled upon him ferociously and
asked him why he dared intrude upon his territory.
“I’m the Lord High General of the Invincible Army of the
Nomes, and my name is Guph,” was the reply. “All the world
trembles when that name is mentioned.”
The Growleywogs gave a shout of jeering laughter at this,
and one of them caught the Nome in his strong arms and tossed
him high into the air. Guph was considerably shaken when he
fell upon the hard ground, but he appeared to take no notice
of the impertinence and composed himself to speak again to
the Grand Gallipoot.

“My master, King Roquat the Red, has sent me here to confer
with you. He wishes your assistance to conquer the Land of Oz.”
Here the General paused, and the Grand Gallipoot scowled
upon him more terribly than ever and said:
“Go on!”
The voice of the Grand Gallipoot was partly a roar and partly
a growl. He mumbled his words badly and Guph had to listen
carefully in order to understand him.
These Growleywogs were certainly remarkable creatures.
They were of gigantic size, yet were all bone and skin and
muscle, there being no meat or fat upon their bodies at all. Their
powerful muscles lay just underneath their skins, like bunches
of tough rope, and the weakest Growleywog was so strong
that he could pick up an elephant and toss it seven miles away.
It seems unfortunate that strong people are usually so
disagreeable and overbearing that no one cares for them. In
fact, to be different from your fellow creatures is always a
misfortune. The Growleywogs knew that they were disliked and
avoided by every one, so they had become surly and unsociable
even among themselves.
