Since ancient times, Valencia has been
renowned for its radiant light, maritime
spirit, and fertile soil. The city is located
on an extensive coastal plain, and
boasts 800,000 inhabitants. It is the
communications, cultural, social, and
business centre for a metropolitan area
of one-and-a-half million people.
Mediterranean by nature, Valencia is
lively at play, and dynamic at work, in
business, and in economic growth.
D.L. V-961-2007 - GTUK04/2008
Printed on recycled paper.
Here you can see relics of Roman,
Visigoth, and Islamic cultures, as well
as notable examples of all styles of art
and culture. The last years of the 20th
century brought modern infrastructures
in communications, finance, culture,
science, and leisure, making Valencia
one of the outstanding cities of Spain
and Europe.
Over the last years, the city has shown
its splendour to the world as the host
of major international events such as
the America’s Cup regattas, the Fifth
World Meeting of Families and the F1
European Grand Prix.

Tracing the
clues
The history of Valencia stretches back
more than 21 centuries to its founding
under the Romans in 138 B.C. It
became strategically important during
the reign of Augustus. From 714 A.D.
it was under Islamic control, and this
would continue until the arrival of
Jaime I.
King Jaime made it the capital of a
kingdom founded on new laws and
institutions. Agriculture and business
were at the core of the new Valencian
wealth.
Privileged regional institutions sprang
up and acquired great importance,
such as the “Consolat de Mar” (Sea
or Maritime Consulate) and the “Taula
de Canvis” (Merchants’ Exchange).
In 1609, sidelined from all trade
with America, the city suffered an
economic collapse in agriculture
following the expulsion of the Moors
that had converted to Christianity.
It was silk, in the 18th century, that
brought about its economic and
cultural rebirth.
The beginning of the 20th century and
the 1909 Regional Exposition were
passionate times. During the Spanish
Civil War, Valencia was the capital
of the Republic, headquarters of the
Government and Courts of Justice
previously located in Madrid. A long postwar dictatorship finally gave way to the
return of democracy and the setting up
of an autonomous regional statute. All the
local governments of the last 25 years
have striven to improve the city, to make it
the impressive metropolis we see today.
Visitors face the challenge
of discovering the traces
left by populations that
settled in Valencia in the
course of 21 centuries of
history.
Museums and
monuments
The list of monuments, cultural treasures
and museums in Valencia is long indeed,
and offers visitors dozens of interesting
venues, from the Silk Exchange, a
UNESCO declared World Heritage
Centre, to the IVAM, the Museum of
Fine Arts, the Rice Museum, or the
Concha Piquer Museum.
What’s more, Valencia has some
very singular elements that you won’t
find anywhere else in the world. For
example...
• The Tribunal de las Aguas (Water
Court), which meets every Thursday
at noon beneath the Apostles Door of
Valencia Cathedral so that the syndics
of the plain of Valencia’s seven irrigation
canals can settle watering disputes.
They have carried on in the same way
for 1000 years, practising oral trials
without documents, and deciding on
sentences with no right of appeal.
• The Holy Grail Chapel in Valencia
Cathedral, conserved since 1437 lays
claims to possessing the Holy Chalice
used at Christ’s last supper with his
disciples.

Valencia,
Nature at
its Best
From the Parque de Cabecera to
the Mediterranean coast, Valencia
merges into one enormous, natural
space,
completely
unrivalled
anywhere else in Europe.
Valencia is a city that boasts many
parks and gardens. Extensive green
areas that, besides beautifying the
urban landscape, make great meeting
points and relaxation spaces.
One of the most outstanding of
these is the Turia Gardens, the
green lung that covers and hugs the
city, crossed by classic modern and
contemporary bridges.
The classic bridges, brought down and
reconstructed after savage flooding in
the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, are
these five: San José, Trinity, Serrano,
Royal Bridge, and Mar. Others, built
in city development zones, must be
included in the catalogue: the Pasarela,
the Exposition, Queen’s Bridge, or
Monteolivete Bridge, among others.
The 11km urban forest located in
the Turia Gardens, the city’s urban,
environmental and cultural meeting
point, hosts play areas, sports
installations and La Ciutat de les
Arts i les Ciències, an enormous
leisure-cultural complex.
It is here that we can find
L’Oceanográfic, Europe’s largest
40
marine centre and home to 45,000
examples of 500 different species.
A reference among the latest
generation of parks, located in an
impressive, avant-garde setting.

Still at the Parque de Cabacera and
continuing with water as the leading
character, we find the old water deposit
tank of Valencia. A jewel of Valencia
industrial architecture, now renovated as
a Museum of History. A space where
the visitor has the chance to re-create
in virtual reality, thanks to the Time
Machine, the way the city looked in any
one of its 22 centuries of history. An
enjoyable yet precise way of getting to
know the city first hand.
Running close to or alongside the
old river, Valencia shows off its
best classical gardens. La Glorieta,
El Parterre and Los Jardines de
Monforte are green zones with an
intense urban flavour.
The Alameda is Valencia’s 19th
century promenade par excellence,
and was created for showing off
landaus. The Viveros or Royal
Gardens, a space where the Royal
Palace was, is one of the chosen
spots for Valencians to take a sunny
morning stroll.
The Botanical Garden was inaugurated
in 1808 by the prestigious botanist
Cavanilles; it has a substantial collection,
outstanding among which are the palms
and tropical trees - a delight for all lovers
of botany.
Don’t forget to visit El
Palmar. Here, you can
find typical Valencian
dishes such as Paella,
Arroz a banda or All i
Pebre.
The most acclaimed natural space
in Valencia is the Albufera Nature
Park.
We recommend a visit to the “Racó
de L’Olla and Stables Visitors
Centre” or El Palmar Ethnological
Museum. That will help you get to
know the Nature Park even better.
A quiet boat ride across the Albufera
would be the perfect end to a visit.
Alongside the Albufera, another
fairytale area: Dehesa del Saler,
covered with pines and dunes with
open pathways to the sea.
By the seaside is the El Saler Golf
Course, ranked among the top 50
courses in the world.
Within this framework, an extensive
tourist complex -Devesa Gardens-,
presents an infinite array of holiday
choices.

Gastronomy
Valencian gastronomy is based on a
plentiful, simple, varied, imaginative,
and very natural cuisine.
One visit to the Central Market will
invites visitors to lose themselves
in a flurry of irresistible colours and
aromas.
Valencia is, without doubt, the home
of the most internationally famous
dish, the paella. Traditionally, this
dish has been prepared by men.
Rice is at the heart of local Valencian
cuisine, and there are a host of
magnificent, succulent and varied
rice dishes, ranging from the honey
sweet to the brothy and dry, oven
cooked and the “a banda” rice.
Other exquisite dishes include: “all
i pebre”; la horchata con “fartons”o
el “Agua de Valencia”.
A range of excellent wines also
awaits visitors, such as white wines
from Alto Turia and the Serranía,
or reds from Requena, Utiel, and
Campo de Líria, all of them excellent
and with official denomination of
origin.
A real treat awaits visitors in
the observation of authentic
paella preparation. This is a
true art, in which everything
from the firewood to the
lightly frying and boiling
technique is based on strict
rituals.

Festivities
Valencia experiences many different
types of festivities, from the religious to
the profane, mixing ritual, inventiveness,
gunpowder, music, and fire.
This is our calendar of festivals:
LAS FALLAS
Taking place from March 1 to 19
(from March 15 to 19 are the intense
finales of the fiesta)
A total of 350 large fallas monuments
are erected, together with a quantity
of other children’s fallas. The groups
behind each join together to make a
flower offering to their patron saint,
Our Lady of the Forsaken, a ritual
that takes 20 hours over two days of
colourful parades.
SAILORS’ HOLY WEEK
This takes place in the Grao, Cabañal
and Canyamelar districts, alongside
the beach. The festivities reach their
climax with the Processions of the
Palms, of the Holy Burial, and the
Parade of the Resurrection.
TWO SAINTS CALLED VINCENT
- St Vicente the Martyr (January 22).
A deacon of the city, martyred in the
year 303 for failing to relinquish
his faith. The city remembers him
solemnly.
- St Vicente Ferrer (2nd Monday
after Easter). Dominican preacher.
Valencia remembers him with
inventive infant shows on his life and
miracles. These are called “els altars
de Sant Vicent”.
Visitors cannot afford
to miss the mascletà
(a rhythmic firework
symphony) at 2 pm in
front of the Ayuntamiento
(City Council Building).
At night, in the dry riverbed, there
is a “nit del foc”, a firework display
lasting 30 minutes.
The fallas monuments are all burned
at midnight on March 19. Just one
“ninot” is saved by popular vote. The
collection of all pardoned “ninots
indultats” from 1934 onwards can be
seen at the Fallas Museum (Detailed
information in section “Museums and
monuments”).
75
OUR LADY OF THE FORSAKEN
(2nd Sunday in May) Patron saint.
A morning mass (“dels infants”)
is the highlight of the festivities.
Following this: the effigy is carried
from its Basilica to the Cathedral
by the frantic masses of faithful
worshippers. This frenzied crowd
gives way in the afternoon to a strict
procession which uses rose petals
as its form of worship.
JULY FAIR
Summer fiesta of July that includes
a grand contest of brass bands, and
which is brought to a close, after
days of shows and fireworks, by a
“Battle of Flowers”.
OCTOBER 9
Festivity during which Valencia
recalls the conquest by James I in
1238. It is a fiesta that celebrates
Valencia’s own autonomy.
This date, however, is also the day
lovers in Valencia have set aside
for sweetening the lives of their
sweethearts. Tradition dictates that
lovers give presents of handkerchiefs
filled with sweets and marzipan,
occasionally sealed with a ring.
THE MOST BAROQUE CORPUS
The Corpus has been celebrated
in Valencia since 1355. Here, it is
given expression by suitably dressed
volunteers who portray personalities
from the Bible. Valencia’s Corpus
Christi has some unique elements to
distinguish it from those of the rest
of Spain: triumphal carriages called
“Les Roques”.

Shopping in
Valencia
Commercial life in Valencia is intense,
with tradition working hand in hand
with modern customs. The area of
Marqués de Dos Aguas and Poeta
Querol have all the international
designer names and luxury firms.
The D. Juan de Austria, Colón and
Jorge Juan areas also have vibrant
commercial areas.
Some shops offer discounts for
holders of the Valencia Tourist Card
The traditional city centre Barrio
del Carmen has become a vibrant
commercial centre - its winding
streets are home to a myriad of shops
selling the latest alternative fashions
and workshops offering modern
artisan craft products. If you prefer to
shop in department stores, you should
drop in at any of the large shopping
centres to be found in the city.
Valencia has a flea market on
Sundays next to the Mestalla football
stadium. The Silk Exchange is also
a market for collectors of stamps
and coins. Handcrafted products
are sold in the quaint, round Plaza
Redonda (Round Square).
Shopping hours run from Monday to
Saturday, from 10 am. to 1.30-2 pm.,
mornings, and from 4.30-5 pm. until 8- 9
pm. Shopping centres open without breaks
from 10 am. until 9 pm. They close Sundays
and holidays.
Valencia Souvenirs
Don’t forget to visit
Mercado de Colón
market, a modernist icon
that has been restored
as a leisure area.
79
Sport
activities
The largest, most accessible and
open of all Valencia’s spaces are the
Turia Gardens, the most important
gardens in the city, and full of people
practising sports in the open air at
all hours.
Another option is to try pedal power;
Valencia has a 78 km city cycle-track
(the biggest in Spain).
*Consult the city plan.
Those who prefer golf will find
Valencia has four different courses
close by. In order of furthest first,
they are El Bosque, Escorpión,
Manises and El Saler.

what’s on offer: the Luis Puig

“Valencia by
moonlight”
Any traveller in olden times who
reached the city too late at night was
left locked out of the city gates by the
wall. That really was all about being
“out in the Valencia moonlight”.
Some night spots offer
discounts to Valencia
Tourist Card users.
Now the Valencians are among those
who really live the small hours with
intensity.
The list includes more than 10
appropriate districts and areas, and
each with various special features.
It’s best to try them out and choose
between the Barrio del Carmen, El
Tossal and Cánovas, Juan Llorens,
Plaza Honduras, Xúquer, la Avenida
de Aragón, the Malvarrosa, Blasco
Ibáñez, Mercado de Colón –
Columbus Market.
Juan Carlos 1 Royal Marina is the
new hot area that has emerged as a
result of being the site for the 32nd
America’s Cup and the F1 Grand
Prix of Europe. This luxurious setting
combines the highest competition
with the glamour of the best marinas
in the world. A large group of
wonderfully designed buildings are
at the disposal of a demanding public
hoping to experience unforgettable
