Combining superior wiping performance
with futuristic, integrated styling,
replacement DENSO Hybrid Wiper Blades
were first launched to the aftermarket in
2005. Customers have been able to take
advantage of Hybrid retrofits with a 9x3
connector – suiting the most popular size
of wiper arm used globally – since 2012.
Now, vehicles with the second most
common wiper arm size, 9x4, can also
be retrofitted with DENSO Hybrid Blades.
Together with 9x3 connectors, the full
retrofit Hybrid range now includes 21
part references, with the new 9x4 part
references offering a 10% increase in car
parc coverage.

Plugs, which feature a protruding ground
electrode, like DENSO’s Twin Tip (TT)
Spark Plugs.
So when it comes to replacing spark plugs,
what should you know?
Construction matters
The central electrode and construction of
the ground electrode both have a huge
impact on the combustion process. The
smaller the surface area of the central
electrode, the lower the voltage required
for combustion. In addition, you also have
to take into consideration the distance
between the electrodes.
Spark plug replacement intervals depend
on the technology and materials used
during plug manufacture, especially in
terms of the electrical and heat corrosion
resistance of those materials.
The estimated mileage of standard nickel
spark plugs is between 30,000 and 45,000
km, platinum spark plugs around 70,000
km, and double platinum spark plugs more
than 80,000 km. The estimated mileage
of iridium spark plugs – depending on the
thickness of the central electrode and the
construction of the ground electrode –
ranges from 60,000 km up to 120,000 km
The ground electrode is of key importance.
In 1974 DENSO developed a ground
electrode with a now-familiar U-groove
design, allowing more focused sparks
on a smaller surface area; increased
ignition efficiency. Another way to increase
ignitability is the use of precious metal
plates welded to the ground electrode.

In 2003, DENSO introduced Super Ignition
Spark Plugs (SIP) featuring a fine tip on the
platinum ground electrode.
Plugs are produced without using precious
metals on the electrodes – making their
price comparable to Standard nickel spark
plugs – and feature a nickel center and a
‘twin’ protruding ground electrode with a
slimmer 1.5 mm diameter. The complete TT
Spark Plugs range is highly consolidated,
comprising 15 part numbers that together
offer 87% coverage of the top selling EU
car parc. If you are looking for a highly
ignitable, high quality, durable spark plugs
without the costs usually associated with
high performance, choose DENSO TT.
Based on this construction, DENSO then
developed and introduced Twin Tip (TT)
Spark Plugs to the aftermarket; which
proved a huge success. DENSO’s TT Spark

combustion in the combustion chamber – as
well as lower fuel consumption, increased
engine efficiency and smooth engine
running. In low temperature conditions,
start-up performance, response times and
initial ignition are significantly reduced.
This difference can be quite significant and
depends on the vehicle application.
What is more, the ignition voltage required
to ignite the LPG gas/air mixture is much
higher than to ignite a gasoline/air mixture.
In the case of a gas/air mixture, an ignition
voltage of 10-15 kV is usually sufficient.
LPG engines require higher ignition voltage;
approx. 25-30 kV.
The increased voltage and combustion
temperature of LPG engines means that the
spark plugs used in these engines should
be replaced more often.
It is therefore recommended to use
iridium spark plugs with platinum ground
electrodes in gas operated engines.
DENSO After Market’s Iridium Tough Spark
Plug range delivers the highest ignitability
In regions where LPG systems are fitted
on older car parc, the price is often
more sensitive than having the very low
replacement rate of Iridium plugs. DENSO
then has the extremely effective alternative
to Iridium Tough plugs, the DENSO TT
Spark Plugs. These plugs compensate
for the required higher ignition voltage
with a smaller diameter centre and ground
electrodes when using alternative fuels.
DENSO TT Spark Plugs provide greater
ignitability than platinum spark plugs, and
their hardened ground electrode is more
resistant to temperature and electrical
erosion than standard nickel plugs. This
makes the use of TT in LPG engines highly
effective for an affordable price.

Gas operated engines
What about gas operated engines? The
operating temperature in a LPG, CNG
or LNG engine is much higher than in
petrol engines, as the gas/air mixture
burns at higher temperature. This higher
temperature, together with increased
electrical erosion from alternative fuels,
gives a different service lifetime of a spark
plug compared with normal petrol engines.

Don’t forget that DENSO’s range of OE quality, replacement Ignition Coils has significantly

DENSO has been named winner of the Global Automotive Components prize at this year’s
Automechanika Moscow powered by MIMS (Moscow International Motor Show), for the third
consecutive year.
Experts have again hailed DENSO’s spark
plugs as the best on the automotive
components market at this year’s
prestigious awards, which took place at
the Expocentre in Moscow.
Leading automotive parts manufacturers
from all over the world took part in the
2014 competition. The winners were
chosen by 25 market experts who rated
the participants’ products based on a wide
range of performance characteristics in a
special questionnaire, followed by internet
voting. DENSO spark plugs again received
the highest rating in the experts’ vote,
having also won the GAC prize in 2012 and
2013.
The aim of the GAC prize is to identify the
leading automotive parts manufacturers
and give a clear picture of the automotive
market.
DENSO spark plugs reduce fuel
consumption and decrease the amount of
harmful emissions. They also improve a
car’s performance and guarantee engine
start even under extremely cold conditions;
all factors which helped contribute to this
latest award triumph for DENSO.

EGR Valves and EGTS
EGR Valves and EGTS are part of DENSO’s Engine Management Systems (EMS) ranges
featuring original DENSO technologies, but what role do they play in achieving the most
advanced EMS?
EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION VALVES
How they work
The achievement of cleaner vehicle exhaust
gas owes much to the quality and efficiency
of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
Valve. The role of the EGR Valve is to mix
the engine’s exhaust gas with the intake air
as appropriate for the driving conditions,
reducing the concentration of oxygen in
the intake air and slowing the combustion
speed. As a result of reduced oxygen density
during air intake, combustion temperature
decreases and lower levels of harmful
nitrogen oxide (NOx) are generated.
• A small passageway exists between the
intake and exhaust manifolds. This is where
the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve
is located, where it adjusts the amount
of recirculated exhaust gas back into the
intake manifold
EGR Valve Mounting Location
• When the engine is idling, the EGR
Valve is closed and there is no EGR
flow into the intake manifold. The EGR
Valve remains closed until the engine is
warm and operating under load. As the
load and combustion temperature start
to increase, the EGR Valve is opened
and begins to send exhaust gas back
into the intake manifold
• Due to the technological advances
achieved in EGR control and catalyst
technology, cleaner exhaust has been
achieved even under lean-burn
conditions
The ECU judges information detected by
the sensors due to each driving condition.
The EGR valve is then opened/closed to

draw exhaust gas into the intake air, thereby decreasing the concentration of oxygen in
the intake air and slowing the combustion speed. As a result, combustion temperature
decreases, thereby controlling the generation of harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx).Due to
the advances achieved in EGR control and catalyst technology, cleaner exhaust has
been realised even under lean-burn conditions.
• Increasing the EGR volume lowers NOx production to a point, but excessive EGR
volume causes incomplete combustion, raising the particulate levels. Achieving
the opposing goals of lower NOx production and lower particulate levels requires
carefully tuned EGR levels.
• DENSO uses electronically controlled EGR valves that operate in tandem with an
electronic throttle.
EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSORS
How they work
The Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS), which is located in
front of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and/or in front of the
Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), detects exhaust gas temperature,
converts it into a voltage and feeds that voltage signal back to the
engine ECU, in order to control engine conditions and effectively
reduce emissions.
Due to the improved temperature detection achieved by the
EGTS, post combustion fuel injection is closely controlled and the
amount of particulate matter in the DPF is accurately estimated –
allowing effective ‘regeneration’ of the DPF. This results in cleaner
emissions and increased fuel efficiency, as less fuel is required in
the DPF regeneration process. In addition, the temperature of the
catalytic converter is controlled, protecting it from overheating and
reducing deterioration of the catalyst.

enabling a feedback control of
