What’s the most wonderful time of the year? SUMMER!
WBCA’s inspirational Heart 4 Art event turns up the heat
again offering a “triple-crown” day: breakfast, lunch, and
dinner on May 12th at the spacious and beautiful Vadnais
Heights Commons. Heart 4 Art is WBCA’s most important

pillar of support, and you are the most important part of
its strength. This is your opportunity to “give back” to the
art center you love and ensure the joys of the arts are accessible to all members of the
community. There will be plenty of room, so call WBCA today at 651.407.0597 if you
still need to reserve your seat at the table.
This summer, the Ford Family Gallery will inspire us to go beyond ourselves, exhibiting
the work of internationally renowned photographer Douglas Beasley in Beyond the Selfie:
Going Deeper into Meaning & Metaphor. Mr. Beasley has invited work from eight highly
accomplished photographers for this exhibit, which opens on June 6th.
In July, the gallery will celebrate Minnesotans’ love for nature with our first Plein Air exhibition,
featuring 10 award-winning plein air artists. We hope WBCA’s gallery, events, and the all
the class offerings this summer inspire you to continue on your own creative journey.
I also want to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mary Gove
for her role as WBCA’s 2015 Board Chair. You may have read her letter in the spring
catalog as she reflected on the organization’s dynamic growth in 2015. Mary’s energetic
and thoughtful leadership steered WBCA through a critical period of building the
organization’s capacity and deepening our commitment to improving accessibility to the
arts, especially to underserved members in our community. We thank Mary for sharing
her passion and love for the community and are grateful for her continuing leadership to
help WBCA stretch its wings and soar. We also thank Mary Levins for her leadership and
service as Vice-Chair. Affectionately known as “the Marys,” they remain a dynamic duo
whose actions continue to vibrate throughout this organization.
And now, sit back and enjoy the catalog, planning your summer at White Bear Center
for the Arts.

This is the perfect technique for travel journaling,
hiking, biking, sauntering, or sitting in a café.
Students will learn to capture what they think they
see in 25 minutes or less using a water soluble pen,
a 4 x 6 inch pad of paper, and a small paint set.
This class is ideal for the timid beginner to learn
to paint fearlessly in public, and for the advanced
artist who wants minimal equipment, total
portability, speed, no interruptions, and no
clean-up. To quote a former student at Canyon
Ranch, “You just changed my life: I can do this!”
$40 material fee covers paint set, paper, water
soluble pen, and water container.
CLASS ID: 2H03
Date/Time: Wednesday-Friday, June 1-3, 10:00 AM-4:00 PM
Tuition: $350 Member/$438 Non-Member

Revitalize your photography while exploring your
relationship to your subject, your camera, and
yourself. Through photo exercises, assignments,
and daily field trips, participants will learn to
deepen their visual awareness while clarifying
their approach, making images that are both more
personal and more meaningful. Zen & the Art of
Photography is a challenging invitation to redefine
not only what is personally suitable subject matter,
but your whole approach to creative expression.
Inspiration will be sparked by a balance of
conversation, meditation, sharing photos, critiques,
writing exercises, readings, poetry, or whatever
means necessary. Numerous photographic exercises
and assignments will be site-specific and are
concerned with both internal and external
experience and growth. Expect to learn from
fellow students as well as from class activities.
Be prepared to grow past your previously perceived
boundaries.
Who Should Attend: While participants must
have a strong working knowledge of their camera,
the creative process of image making will be
emphasized over the mechanics of camera use.
Both digital and film, in all formats, are welcome.
Open to all levels of experience but better suited to
those looking to expand their creativity and vision
than those seeking technical help.

design and lots of tricks to make the detail work
easier. Intermediate students will have no trouble
with the drawing, etc. because Karen has some
easy painting tips. We will also be working with
several different types of metallic special effects
and will be studying Gustav Klimt’s paintings.
Design tips will also be shared. Finishing touches
are such fun! This is one of Karen’s most popular
workshops. The instructor will have some
optional materials for sale.

Pastel Societies and Signature status in the
Pastel Society of America in addition to receiving
many national awards. She has worked and
taught in a wide variety of media with a special
focus on painting en plein air to indulge her
fascination with light and color in Minnesota’s
beautiful north shore landscape.
Emily Haddad
“She overcame hardship and
tragedy to fight for civil rights,
women’s rights, and equal access to justice.”
Girl from Birch Creek is a 57 minute historical
documentary film written and directed by Emily
Haddad and narrated by Nina Totenberg. It tells
the story of Justice Rosalie Wahl, the first woman
appointed to the Minnesota Supreme Court, and
her courage and vision to fight for those who
had no voice. As a young girl, she faced tragedy
and hardship during the Depression and World
War II, and dedicated her life to helping others.
From her position she fought for equal justice
regardless of race, gender, or economic status.
The film also discusses the women’s movement
that helped to make Rosalie’s appointment to the
Minnesota Supreme Court possible.

Do You See
What I See?
Karin Hertel McGinnis
Join Karin McGinnis in unraveling
the intricate relationship between physical vision
and cultural perception. The discussion will
consider the historic role of art as well as ideas
such as “seeing is believing”, “beauty is in the eye
of the beholder”, and “I don’t know a thing about
art, but I know what I like”. The conversation will
expand into modern media and globalization as
well as shared experiences to provide participants
with a guide for understanding the different
ways of seeing in a visually connected world.

Concrete Sculpture
Workshop
Wouterina De Raad
Learn to make a concrete statue in this 2-day
workshop. Wouterina will teach her own
techniques, not offered in books or schools. During
the first day of this workshop, participants will
make a multi-layered metal form, which will be
cemented on the following day. You will learn how
to cut and shape metal lath and when and how to
use reinforcements. There will be a demonstration
on various cementing techniques, discussions on
cement formulas, and what pigments to use for
coloring cement. Wouterina has a technique
to create concrete environments without any
welding. With this knowledge you can create
benches in any shape you like, that can seat
as many people as you want, as well as outdoor
adobe style fireplaces, fences and arches that
light up, life size sculptures, bird baths, planters,
and smaller objects. All materials and tools are
provided.
Bring from home: garden gloves with a thin
Nitrile palm (Atlas gloves are Wouterina’s
recommendation), a dust mask or scarf, safety
glasses, and a lunch. Please also bring a board
to carry your sculpture home on and a sheet
of plastic to wrap your sculpture in.

Wouterina De Raad
Learn the basic skills of mosaic tiling. Students will
learn how to cut and break glass and ceramic tile,
and what materials and adhesives to use for
subzero climates. There will be a grouting
demonstration and discussions on cement
formulas and how to use pigments and texture
a cement surface. Students provide the object or
sculpture to be decorated. All other materials and
tools are provided.

COOKING
COOKING
Paella Valenciana
Bread Making
The Paella is the pan used to cook this legendary
dish, and Valenciana refers to the region of Spain
on the shores of the Mediterranean where it
originated. It is typically cooked outdoors in the
countryside on a dry wood fire. The Paella must
be set at a suitable height to be surrounded by
flames during the first part of the cooking, and
the fire must be kept burning at the correct
strength. Generally, good Paella depends not so
much on the quality of the ingredients as on
combining all the components in the correct
proportions. The five basic elements - oil, water,
rice, heat and cooking receptacle - need be
balanced with an almost mathematical precision.
The experience and personal touch of whoever
is in charge of the cooking are also of utmost
importance. The preparation of Paella in the
countryside is a ritualistic, festive occasion which
can sometimes turn into a gastronomic debate!
The relaxed, lighthearted atmosphere is punctuated
with jokes and comments on the progress of the
food. The experience culminates when the Paella
is deemed ready, removed from the fire and
carried to the table. Paella Valenciana has Bomba
rice, rabbit or pork, green beans, chicken, snails,
tomatoes, paprika, and saffron. Peggy’s version of
Paella Valenciana will use seafood, pork, chicken,
beans, chorizo, and Bomba rice. That’s a mouthful! Bring an apron to class.

a classic slow rise French country loaf of bread as

Build a Portable
Brick Oven
David S. Cargo
Join award-winning baker David S. Cargo to
learn how to build a portable stacked-brick
oven. The oven is built from stacked bricks that
are not mortared together and can be moved
after the oven is built. Students will learn how
to build a small oven by themselves and go from
bare ground to cooking pizza in about 4 hours.
Class discussion covers some of the differences
between these portable brick ovens and more
familiar designs such as Alan Scott ovens, Forno
Bravo Pompeii ovens, and cob ovens such as
those made popular by Kiko Denzer. The class
covers siting the oven, preparing the ground for
the oven, and then the practical techniques for
construction. Every student gets a handout with
plans for three different sizes of ovens, their bills
of materials, and recipes for use with the oven.
The oven is built to demonstrate the techniques
used, and the plans that show how the ovens go
together will be read. While the fire is heating
the oven up, David demonstrates how to make
dough for pizza, bread, naan, and pita bread.
Later in the afternoon, the dough is formed into
the proper shapes for baking, and some dough is
formed for a loaf of bread. Finally, the pita bread,
naan, and pizzas are baked (and eaten) and then
the loaf of bread goes into the oven.
Bring from home: a lunch for an hour break at
noon, plus hat, gloves, note-taking materials and
sturdy shoes (in case of falling bricks).

Gestural Drawing
Mike Reed
An effective drawing somehow “feels” right
because contrast, contour, elasticity, structure,
size, line quality, texture, and descriptive detail
work together to create a sense of drama,
form, and movement. These characteristic
elements are all components of “gesture,”
and learning to recognize and manipulate the
underlying gesture of objects is essential to
effectively rendering everything from dynamic
figures, flowing drapery, and delicate organic
forms, to exaggerated cartoons, graphic
design, and lively abstracts. Some people seem
to have an innate grasp of gesture and how
to express it through drawing. Those with less
native understanding often dismiss themselves
as lacking talent, but the ability to recognize
and use gesture to create effective drawings
can be acquired by instruction, observation,
and practice. Learning to see and interpret
gesture is an ongoing process for all artists,
and this class is designed to benefit artists
of all experience levels.

SAORI weaving is very different from traditional
weaving, placing more importance on free
expression and creativity than on technical skills
or the regularity of the woven cloth. This is a
therapeutic/healing weaving technique. SAORI
weaving celebrates the unintentional beauty
resulting from our natural creativity and does not
try to imitate machine-made products. Irregular
selvages and accidental skips of thread add to
the un-programmed beauty of SAORI cloths.
Students in this class will relax, enjoy, explore,
and develop positive thinking through weaving,
and will be inspired by other weavers in the class.
Enjoy weaving with many colors and textures
while using the inherent sense of exploration we
all possess! Floor looms will be set up for students
in advance so they can start weaving right away
and take home whatever length of cloth they
weave. No two weavers are alike, so it is natural
that every cloth, freely woven by people with
different personalities, is beautiful in a unique
way. Students are welcome to bring materials
from home that they would like to use for their
project such as home spun yarn or strips of fabric.

Sami Bracelet:
Reindeer Leather
and Pewter
Sterling Silver
Byzantine Pattern
Bracelet
The Sami People (also known as Laplanders) are
the indigenous people of Sweden, Norway, Finland,
and the Kola Peninsula of Russia, and have a long
history and tradition of reindeer breeding. Wanting
to use all parts of the reindeer, these people make
beautiful jewelry out of reindeer leather. In this
class students will start by braiding pewter thread
(nickel-free alloy with 4% silver) and sewing it to
the reindeer leather. The back of the bracelet
is stitched closed using sinew thread and a
button clasp made from shed reindeer antler tips
is attached. All tools are provided, but students
who need magnification for this close hand work
should bring their own. Additional kits will also be
available to purchase from the instructor.
This bracelet is a modern twist on a traditional
byzantine chain maille pattern. Each student starts
out with sterling silver jump rings and ends up
with a custom bracelet. While the pattern looks
complicated, it is as simple as counting to six,
because the design is repeated after every six jump
rings. Students will also learn how to make jump
rings at home. Pliers are provided, but students
can bring their own if they wish. Students who
need magnification for the close hand work should

PAINTING - ACRYLIC
PAINTING - ACRYLIC
Inspired
by Impressionists
Introduction to
Acrylics
The characteristics of Impressionist painting include
relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes,
with emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its
changing qualities (often accentuating the effects
of the passage of time), and ordinary subject
matter. Vincent van Gogh’s “Irises” will be the
inspiration for the June class, the July class will
focus on Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies”, and the
August class will concentrate on Auguste Renoir’s
“A Day in the Country”. Using acrylic pigments,
students will learn to paint these beautiful works
of art, add their own style, and capture the
impressionistic period. No experience necessary.
Students are encouraged to bring snacks and a
favorite beverage to this class. Relax and have fun
while learning to paint! $12 material fee includes
a 16 x 20 canvas and all materials.
Have fun learning the basics of painting with acrylics
on canvas. Enjoy making beautiful brush strokes
with this versatile medium. Bring favorite drinks
and appetizers to spice up the class! No experience
necessary. Pay the instructor for all supplies.

Go with the Flow
with Acrylics
Bonnie Cutts
There are many ways to apply acrylic paint, each
achieving its own unique quality, appearance,
and energy. During this class students will have
an opportunity to work with High Flow Acrylics
in combination with fluids, gels, and mediums.
High Flow is similar to an acrylic ink which
is great for drawing, brushing, pouring, and
dripping. Students will have a chance to see
how the paint flows on a variety of prepared
surfaces and prep a few surfaces to work on that
day. Watch High Flow creep along wet acrylic
materials for some jaw dropping effects. Bring
along an empty refillable marker to mix colors as
well a variety of paintbrushes. The artwork of the
day will be stimulated by the incredible flow of
the paint, and imagination. Open to all levels of
painting experience.
Bring to class: 1 empty refillable marker,
paintbrushes, palette knives, palette for acrylic
paint, water container, rags, 2 canvases
(8 x 10 or 9 x 12), a water container, and bag lunch.

with Encaustic

Join in on a new endeavor of working with hot
beeswax which contains a resin as a hardening
agent and pigments of many colors. It is called
encaustic, an ancient art form dating back to the
Greeks, which was revived by Jasper Johns and
has gained popularity since the 90s. This medium
is exciting because of its flexibility and versatility.
Wax can be moved with a hot air gun, textured
with tools, imbedded with beautiful paper, and
turned into a collage. Step-by-step instruction
and individual attention will help students
develop their painting in this wonderful medium.

Understanding
Painting with Oils
Wade Into Oils:
Dip a Toe In!
This is a painting class taught by demonstration.
Paint along with Dan as he works on a piece,
following each step from beginning to end and
then applying what you’ve learned to your own
painting later on in the class. By watching the process you will see how early steps, tools, and colors
can affect the final look of a painting. (Warning:
demos are sometimes spontaneous and unscripted!
Chaos occasionally ensues!) Tool and material demos, reference books, field trips, and critiques may be
applied as needed to release your inner fauve! Oil is
the paint of choice but any opaque media such as
pastel or acrylic are also welcome. While this class
is open to all levels, drawing experience is highly
recommended if not downright required!
This introductory class will lead students through
the entire oil painting process, from drawing with
line, then on to values, and finally to color. A slower,
step-by-step process will be emphasized to help
students gain a foothold of the process. Those who
already paint in oil will gain a better understanding of
the medium. Each week of class will bring students
to a higher level. The instructor will have some
photos available to work some, but students should
also bring their own, if desired.
Give oils a try in this half day workshop. You’ll
begin a painting and learn many how-to’s and tips.
A perfect plunge into a medium full of possibilities!
$10 material fee covers all paints and brushes and
first canvas. If you’d like to use water miscible oils,
this fee is payable to the instructor. If you prefer
to use traditional oils, pay WBCA upon registration.
Additional canvases can be purchased in class
from WBCA.

ANIMALS?
Watercolor Koi and
Water Lilies
Many watercolorists paint landscapes and city
scenes but are afraid to put people in them. This
class will teach you how to include people in
your outdoor scenes, whether at a distance or up
close. Students do not have to have any figure
drawing background, since these people will be
simplified. Paint along with the instructor, who
will demonstrate figures in various common
walking and standing poses, then add clothing.
Students will add simple backgrounds to some
of these figures and also paint them in winter
and summer clothing. If desired, bring finished
or unfinished landscapes to put figures into. The
instructor will bring many photos of people in
different poses for you to use, although students
may want to bring some of their own as well.
Bring your own supplies and paint. 140 lb.
cold-pressed Arches watercolor paper is
recommended. Bring a lunch. Visit
judithblain.com to view examples of Judith’s work.
Get out some watercolors and learn to paint
dogs, cats, and horses! This 3-session class will
discuss one of these animals each class, starting
with a bit of practical anatomy, and going on to
paint hair, eyes, common positions, and most of
all, expressions. The instructor will provide photos
for your use, or you may bring your favorite
photos along. If you do the latter, please print
them off as large as you can – up to 8.5” x 11”.
Bring your own supplies and paint, including
some sketch paper and a soft drawing pencil (4B)
as well as watercolor paper. Visit judithblain.com
to view examples of Judith’s work.
For new and returning students, this class will
add to the art experience by teaching how to
control the paint, making the koi’s colors appear
very natural. There are many different colors of
koi and students will use beautiful photographs
to choose the shapes and colors. Composition
is emphasized so that the objects are placed
and sized to make an interesting painting.
Participants will use movement and rhythm to
help lead the viewer’s eye through the painting.
Techniques will include texturing the lily pads,
masking to save whites, and making bubbles.
Everything will be demonstrated step-by-step and
students will be amazed by what they’ve created.

Always wanted to learn how to take photos of light
trails, star trails and other objects at night? This is
a hands-on class where we will meet in downtown
Stillwater and talk about camera settings before
we set up our cameras and learn hands-on how
to successfully capture an image at night.
Bring from home: a DSLR camera is preferred,
or a high-end compact camera that can shoot in
manual (M) mode, a tripod, and a shutter cable
release is helpful, but not required.

Improving
Photographic Skills
Beginning
iPhoneography
This course will be an open discussion and critique
of photographic skills and technology. Join Robert
and David, along with an invited professional
photographer, for a session of critique and review
of their compositions. Time permitting, there will be
an opportunity to do a photo walkabout at the art
center and a critique of those images. Be prepared
to complete assignments for following sessions.
Participants are encouraged to bring a selection
of up to 5 images (digital or prints), which will be
reviewed by the instructors and class members in
an open critique. Please email questions and/or
requests to the instructors at [email protected]
and [email protected].
This class is for those who enjoy taking pictures
with their iPhone and wish they knew how to use
it in a creative way. Whether on vacation, at a
family reunion, or taking day-to-day snapshots, the
iPhone can be a powerful companion to capture
interesting images. In this class students will be
“iPhoneographers” and explore the potential of the
smartphone. The class will explore topics such
as exposure, composition, applications, the
importance of resolution, and various ways to share
and store images. Class will be a mixture of short
lectures, assignments, and lots of time for making
and talking about iPhoneography.

STONE / WRITING
STONE
Stone Sculpture
Scott Malcolm
Stone sculpture is one of the oldest and most
fundamental vehicles for human expression.
From Stonehenge to Michelangelo’s David, to
the soft sensual forms of Henry Moore, stone
has been used by men and women to express
the mysteries of the human experience reaching
back to long before recorded human history.
This Stone Sculpture open studio will be held
indoors using hand tools on the “soft” stone of
your choice. We welcome experienced sculptors
who desire to work in community as well as
beginners. Small pieces of stone and rudimentary
tools along with basic use and safety instruction
will be provided to beginners free of charge.
Returning students will have the opportunity to
build their own custom work table and continue
working and developing stone projects while
beginning to accumulate their own tools. Small
pieces of high quality alabaster will be offered for
sale to interested students. Class is open to 6 new
students; all returning students are welcome.

In these monthly get-togethers, readers share
thoughts and opinions of books recently read, and
discover new texts as well. Using personal reading
lists plus in-class examples, readers dig deep into a
wide variety of texts, identifying literary elements
and pinpointing the who, what, where, when, why,
how, and more in a warm and welcoming
atmosphere.
