Held at The Victory Services Club, the Mind the Gap event was hosted by David Goodall from principal sponsor EDF Energy. IGEM President Chris opened the evening by reflecting on his year in office and his twin themes of skills and safety. He reminded the audience that while the gas industry is proud of its safety record in the UK, it should not be complacent. He also reflected on his recent visit to China where engineers are held in high esteem. The Lions’ Lair then began. Four of the event sponsors were invited to give a 4 minute pitch of their company’s new and innovative products and services to a group of distinguished judges: Adam Gosnold, Executive Director of Morrison Utility Services, Robert Murray, Sector Director of Skanska Utilities and Michael Caulfield, Director Gas at McNicholas Construction. First into the lair was Elliot Ross, of Steve Vick International, with the “Macaw” Hydraulic Pipe Crackers designed to address the issues of slow, repetitive and sometimes dangerous pipe cracking. Next up was Peter Jellis of Radius Systems to pitch ServiceFlex a solution for inserting existing steel service pipes. He was followed by Andrew Sparkes of Synthotech with the Synthocam3 CCTV surveying system. Firstly it was announced that the Lion’s Lair shield was now to be known as The Tommy McNicholas Shield in memory of Tommy who sadly passed away last year. The prize went to Matthew Izzard, of Kobus Services. Commenting on the reasons why, Judge Robert Murray said: “It was a new product, well researched and well presented – a worthy winner.” Finally into the lair was Matthew Izzard of Kobus Services with the Kobus Pipe Puller, equipment designed to improve the process of replacing existing services (gas and water) with new plastic services. The event also raised £275 for Marie Curie Cancer Care EDF Energy’s Charity Partner. The money was presented by David Goodall to John Nichols, Manager of Technical and Quality Assurance, EDF Energy, the winner of the prize draw was David Morgan of Synthotech. Following a grilling from the judges all of the participants were glad of the break for refreshments and time to visit all of the event sponsors’ stands. Whilst the judges deliberated, the audience were treated to an engaging and entertaining presentation by Jon Butterworth, Group Director of Safety, Sustainability and Resilience at National Grid. Jon’s talk was entitled What are the gaps in safety for you? He emphasised how safety is one of the core values of National Grid and spoke of the role of leadership in an organisation in preventing injuries. The evening closed with Anton Gazzard, Chairman of the South East branch of PIG, giving a vote of thanks for all speakers, judges, sponsors and visitors. IGEM’s London and Southern Section and PIG’s South East branch would like to thank all of the exhibitors and sponsors without whom the event would not have been possible: Steve Vick International, Caldervale Technologies, Fusion Group (Control Point), Kobus Services, PE Weldright Ltd, Pipe Equipment Ltd, Plant & Site Services Ltd, Radius Systems, Synthotech Ltd, Mike Stratton & Associates Ltd, Affinity Water, Rhead Group, Kimplass Ltd, Energy & Utility Skills and Utility Innovation Solutions Ltd. The use of varying materials to form a conduit to transport fluids has its roots well established and documented within ancient civilisations – Roman, Egyptian, Persian, Chinese – so modern man cannot give himself a pat on the back and say ‘Look, I have invented pipelines!’. The development and evolution of associated knowledge and technology for such conduits, in terms of materials, fabrication, installation and operations, has transited history in leaps and bounds - and the future undoubtedly holds challenges in many of these areas for designers, constructors and operators alike. In particular, the recent events of offshore exploration, development and production of hydrcarbons from remote and deepwater environments has introduced a critical perspective and concern particularly with respect to pipelines as a transport mechanism, again in terms of design, fabrication, installation etc. Similarly, jumping in with both feet into 2 or 3,000 metres water depths to effect inspection maintenance and repair for such systems is not a feat to be grabbed with both hands in a light-hearted manner. cornerstone in terms of providing materials, design, fabrication, testing, installation and operations activities which will mitigate potential upset conditions. The possibility for a myriad of potential deficiencies to occur – poorly designed valve seals, incorrect pipe alignment, incorrect welding parameters, misinterpretation of non-destructive testing - the list is endless, all contribute to a breakdown in the wholesome integrity of the pipeline, commonly referred to as pipeline loss of containment. The over-riding approach to be taken stems not only from correct technical appraisals and quality control but importantly, a systematic improvement in reducing human errors and increasing training, skills and competencies. With the over-arching philosophy being of a ‘duty to care’, the attitude of all concerned within the organisation, extending from its higher eschelons to the man on the shop floor, everyone has a part to play in delivering excellence. Fundamentally, this creates a giant leap forward in terms of obviating expensive repairs for offshore and subsea, mitigating loss of production and valuable revenue, resource optimisation and critically, saving operator reputation with respect to health, safety and environmental concerns and within the industry itself. Irrespective of whether we consider deep or shallow water, endeavours should be made from all quarters to approach the complete pipelines life-cycle holistically, such that the philosophy of ‘getting it right the first time’ principle becomes the everyday by-word and 4 The newsletter of The Pipeline Industries Guild | February/March 2014 | www.pipeguild.com Feature Article The Guild get immersed in Subsea Expo 2014 “I’m certain we will see far reaching benefits from exhibiting at Subsea Expo and will certainly look to do this again in the future.” The Pipeline Industries Guild is thrilled to have been a part of Europe’s largest subsea exhibition and conference this year – the Subsea Expo 2014 in Aberdeen, held between 5th and 7th February. The three-day event saw over 5,300 delegates and a further 500 school pupils and students attend, demonstrating it has grown to become one of the world’s leading events in the oil and gas calendar. The Guild was able to raise its profile, gaining much interest from potential members – particularly on the final day which was dedicated solely to students. Commenting on the success of the event, Neil Gordon - Chief Executive of Subsea UK, the show’s organisers, said: “This year’s event has surpassed all expectations. We have attracted more delegates, more international visitors, more exhibitors, more speakers and more young people than ever before, underlining the importance of our sector to the UK and to the global oil and gas industry. “The UK subsea market is now worth almost £9 billion and this week has demonstrated exactly why our supply chain is envied around the world. Our technology, expertise and experience are unparalleled and Subsea Expo provides a platform for showcasing them. The Pipeline stand “The feedback has been tremendously positive with many companies reporting strong levels of new business that will ensure that the sector is well on its way to capturing the forecast £11 billion, a third of the global market share, by 2016.” Claudia Patatas of the Pipeline Industries Guild said: “We have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this prestigious event and it has been most advantageous to connect with both members and non-members. “Reminding those who are already connected with the Guild of the benefits of their membership has been a worthwhile exercise in itself, making sure they are getting the most from our partnership, as well as spreading the word to new companies in the sector about who we are and what we do. Major industry leaders joined government ministers to sign an initiative which could save as much as 24 million tonnes of carbon and £1.46 billion a year by 2050. Michael Fallon said: “This review makes the business case for carbon reduction in what we build. It has been written by business leaders not civil servants and throws down the gauntlet to the construction sector to get behind what could be a game changing initiative.” Commercial Secretary to the Treasury, Lord Deighton and Business and Energy Minister, Michael Fallon met with major contractors and consultants and leading industry organisations in November to launch the Infrastructure Carbon Review. James O’Callaghan, Director of HSQE, Risk and Compliance at Murphy comments: “By reducing the capital carbon of materials and utilising existing resources more efficiently, we aim to play our part in this important initiative.” The review, developed jointly by government and industry through the Infrastructure Cost Review and Green Construction Board, sets out a series of actions for government, clients and suppliers that have the potential to significantly reduce carbon over the next 35 years. Chris Newsome, Director Anglian Water and Chair of Green Construction Board working group, said: “I’ve been very proud to be associated with the infrastructure carbon review and the long term benefits it will deliver within the UK.” Currently, infrastructure and related areas like energy account for around half the UK’s carbon emissions. Cutting materials consumed, and using existing resources more efficiently, will reduce both cost and carbon. PIG members including National Grid, Anglian Water, Murphy Group, Skanska, The Clancy Group, Laing O’Rourke, Balfour Beatty and Carillion signed the endorsement. A number of Guild members are involved in the initiative, which sets out to cut carbon using new technologies, construction techniques and low carbon materials. Read the Infrastructure Carbon Review here. The Green Construction Board is planning an event in Spring 2014 New initiative helps utility companies avoid costly impact of cable strikes One of the UK’s largest technical skills training providers is aiming to reduce strikes to underground cables during excavation works through a new, online evaluation tool. Develop Training say cable strikes is one of the greatest challenge areas for the utility sector, resulting in a significant number of deaths and injuries per year and incurring millions of pounds in associated damages and compensation costs. In a bid to reduce cable strikes, they are delivering a package based on the latest behavioural training and assessment techniques that can help companies improve the competence, knowledge and attitudes of site operatives and supervisors overseeing ground excavations. The ‘Cable Avoidance Evaluation’ assesses operatives and supervisors through an online questionnaire based on true-to-life situations they may face in their roles. Assessment topics include pre-dig assessments, utility mapping, PPE, assessing pre-existing damage, methods for checking and using equipment, interpreting cables and pipework and methods of excavation, with test results highlighting skills gaps and training needs. Over 60,000 cable strikes are reported annually John Atkins, Business Manager at Develop Training, said: “In spite of technical training, cable strike incidents keep occurring and we want to change this.” 6 The newsletter of The Pipeline Industries Guild | February/March 2014 | www.pipeguild.com Member News Positive moves for Rayden Engineering Rayden Engineering foresee a positive year ahead with new appointments, new facilities and new contracts already secured. After reporting a sluggish start to 2013, the company turned their fortunes around and saw an influx of new work prompting a re-shuffle of personnel, introducing two key new members, and refurbishment of new office space and training rooms. Contracts already under way include work for SGN at Provan and Kincraigie in Scotland, and for BPA at the Kingsbury oil terminal in the Midlands. The works for BPA consist of extensive expansion, improvements and modifications to the existing fire-fighting infrastructure currently servicing the Kingsbury oil terminal complex, which includes the fabrication and construction of a new pump house. Looking ahead, Rayden have been awarded a pipeline diversion contract by SGN at Tornagrain, near Inverness, which is scheduled to start in March this year. To support the existing team and ensure continued growth for the company, Rayden have welcomed two key personnel. Stephen Nazer, who has worked in the gas, oil, renewables and utility markets for over thirty years, will head up the Contract Management Department. Tam Bream, who brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from a pipelines and utilities background has taken the role of Business Development Manager, responsible for the further development of business internally and assisting in expanding offerings to current and new clients. Richard Hayden, Managing Director at Rayden, stated: “We are very pleased to have found two such high calibre individuals and we look forward to forging stronger relations with our existing clients and expanding our customer base into new markets.” Work in progress on the BPA Kingsbury Project T.D. Williamson develops diverless solutions for safer subsea operations Pipeline equipment and services company, T. D. Williamson, has developed a further remote-controlled tool to continue its efforts in offering diverless solutions for subsea pipeline operations. Following the release of a remote-controlled subsea 1200RC tapping machine in 2012, the company announced the introduction of a clamp installation tool in December, which can be operated through a laptop by an experienced technician onboard a platform or diving support vessel. 7 The company say, because the most critical part of the hot tapping process is the point at which the drill penetrates a live pipeline, its team was keen to remove divers from the process and provide a remote-controlled diverless solution. The development of the CIT and the Subsea 1200RC tapping machine is the culmination of its concerted effort to provide a safer, more efficient method. “With the introduction of this versatile, remote-controlled clamp installation tool, our efforts to separate man from machine The newsletter of The Pipeline Industries Guild | during the clamping and subsea hot tapping process are now a reality,” said Mike Benjamin, Senior Vice President – Marketing & Technology for TDW. “By doing so, we offer a solution that dramatically reduces risks to personnel and increases efficiency. Looking ahead, we are confident that it will soon become the industry standard for all subsea clamping and hot tapping operations, whether they are carried out to pave the way for repair work, tie-ins or chemical injection.” February/March 2014 | www.pipeguild.com Member News NJUG Awards recognise street works best practice Winners were unveiled at a House of Commons event in December for the 2013 National Joint Utilities Group Awards. reward those who continue to drive the industry forward and keep UK street works amongst the best in the world.” The NJUG represents utilities and their contractors on street works matters, with the awards showcasing examples of industry innovation and best practice. Entries for six categories were open to utilities, contractors and local authorities and the winners were chosen by an independent panel of experts from national government, local authorities, regulators, and industry. On winning the Avoiding Damage Award, SHEQT Director at Morrison Utility Services, Paul Kerridge, commented: “Given the variation of underground utility infrastructure, the potential for damage or injury is an industry-wide concern. From latent damage to inaccurate plans and human error, there is significant potential for underground strikes to occur during streetworks excavations and we are delighted that our focus on this critical area has been recognised by NJUG.” PIG members Morrison Utility Services, Skanska and Thames Water all walked away winners. A full list of winners can be found on the NJUG website: http://www.njug.org.uk/ NJUG CEO, Bob Gallienne, said: “In what has been a busy 2013 for the sector in terms of innovation, it’s great to be in Parliament to Demand nearly doubles for TT-UK’s training Trenchless technology experts TT-UK have seen an unprecedented increase in training take-up at their purpose-built facility over the past 12 months. After investing in a custom-built training facility at their Bedford premises, attendance numbers for their EUSR accredited courses have continued to build, but 2013 saw a dramatic rise from 880 candidates in 2012 to 1,543 in 2013. Courses cover the safe operation of TT-UK’s products such as the Grundomat, Grundoburst, Grundowinch and the TT-UK/RSP Suction Excavators, including safety, maintenance, service and after care. Candidates undergo practical and theory tests and TT-UK boast a 98% pass rate to date. Regular training has been given to employees of customers including Balfour Beatty, The Clancy Group, Morrison Utility Services, National Grid, SGN, SSE, Kier MG, Severn Trent Water, Wales and West Utilities, Portsmouth Water and J Murphy & Sons amongst others. The company attributes its success, and the growing demand for its training services, to the expertise of its five trainers and fully qualified assessor and the value for money their courses offer. Steve Robson, Trainers and Assessor for TT-UK, said: “We keep the numbers on these courses to a maximum of 6-8, so we can monitor the progress of individuals throughout the day. If someone is struggling, we can spend time explaining the products and their applications in more depth until each candidate fully understands “At the end of the training, the client’s investment results in fully trained and competent operatives.” 8 The newsletter of The Pipeline Industries Guild | February/March 2014 | www.pipeguild.com Member News Murphy give staff a cyclist’s-eye-view to help drive improvement in fleet operations A training initiative for staff encouraging drivers to get a cyclist’s view of the road has contributed to J. Murphy & Sons achieving Gold Status with Transport for London’s Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme. Brendan Sugrue, London Regional Plant and Transport Manager said: “Attaining gold status demonstrates our commitment to continuously improving our practices. Murphy’s became one of just 16 companies to successfully achieve the upgrade after demonstrating self-improvement and best practice in fleet operations, which they say has been driven by safety equipment improvements and training. “Purchasing the latest technology and safety equipment is complemented by our £6.5m spending on training this year alone to ensure continual investment in the skills of our workforce.” Murphy HGV vehicles were fitted with close proximity safety equipment such as sidescan detection cameras and warning systems and, taking further measures towards cyclist safety, Murphy introduced a Safe Urban Driving course. Providing practical on-road cycle training gave drivers the opportunity to experience first-hand the changing streetscape and urban environment, and helped them recognise the hazards faced by vulnerable road users. Run by Transport for London, FORS is an industry-led voluntary scheme which aims to raise quality and performance within fleet operations. Murphy’s Gold status also recognises their significant reductions in fleet emissions and in accident and transport related charges. Murphy HGV vehicle fitted with safety equipment and warning systems Members sought for EU Skills’ new Natural Gas Vehicle Network EU Skills is seeking support for a newly formed ‘Natural Gas Vehicle Network’, aimed at growing the market for natural gas vehicles in the UK. As well as providing training support for small and medium sized businesses working in the NGV sector, it is hoped the network will become a leading body promoting the benefits of natural gas vehicles, transferring industry knowledge, establishing industry standards, creating technical training and delivering natural gas growth to commercial and privately owned vehicles. It is suggested the UK lags behind many countries with established NGV markets, but with rising petrol and diesel costs, many businesses and consumers are now purchasing NGVs and converting vehicles to natural gas. Launched by Phil Burnett, Client Manager for Gas Networks at EU Skills’ headquarters in Solihull, the network is fully supported by UK NGV manufacturers and intends to encompass businesses working in fuel supply, natural gas storage, biomethane, natural gas conversions and alternative gas, including shale gas. For further details about the NGV Network, visit the EU Skills website click here or contact the EU Skills NGV Network to make a contribution on topics relating to the industry. 9 The newsletter of The Pipeline Industries Guild | February/March 2014 | New CTO for OMS Pipe measurement specialists Optical Metrology Services has announced the appointment of a new Chief Technology Officer. The joint initiative by Oilennium Ltd, a Petrofac Training Services company that provides eLearning training services to the oil and gas industry, and ActingUp, an Edinburgh theatre company, is believed to be an industry first. While people in the UK oil and gas industry may have seen Acting Up dramas performed live as part of their corporate training experience, this will be the first time such stories will be available online, accessible to the global market. The suite includes a series of animated short films based on scripts of live performances by Acting Up and produced and written by Oilennium’s creative team, plus several liveaction dramatic films, all of which address common themes. One explores the domino effect of letting negligent behaviours pass as acceptable, via the vehicle of the ghost of an oil worker who attends his own funeral and speaks to those involved in his death. Emma Currie, Managing Director and Founder of Acting Up World said: “Our aim has always been to bring performances about everyday working life to those who will never have seen messages presented in this way. participants are fully prepared to embrace training in safe working practices. If we can’t get participants to connect emotionally, they will not change their behaviour. “After viewing these films, not only are they more likely to change their behaviour, they remember these stories and often re-tell them at work to drive home the value of proper safety practice in the workplace.” Further information on the new training materials can be found on the Oilennium website at www.oilennium.com. “Our collaboration with Oilennium means these stories can now reach and inspire safe behaviour in so many thousands around the world.” Kevin Keable, Managing Director of Oilennium, said: “It’s critical that our Shale Gas development at the local level – challenges still to face The UK Government has suggested that local authorities could benefit from Shale Gas extraction in their communities. This would seem to indicate a political commitment to making shale gas development work at the local level, but the question needs to be asked – what challenges still stand in the way? According to a recent BBC news article, the Energy Minister Michael Fallon has indicated that councils could substantially benefit monetarily, if shale gas was successfully extracted in their communities, through the 1% levy on revenues. Steve Hodson 10 This raises some challenging questions. For example, how should this money be spent? With no real guidance or restrictions in place, there are concerns for some people about whether it will be used effectively. To what extent could such revenues be channelled back into mitigating risks or impacts to the environment? The newsletter of The Pipeline Industries Guild | And aside from fiscal policy, a key challenge will be to bridge the gap in technical and human resource capacity at the local level. The issue of strengthening resources and technical know-how was brought up at the latest All Party Parliamentary Group meeting on Unconventional Oil and Gas in January 2014 which discussed impacts of the exploratory phase on local communities. Stephen Hodson of RSKW pointed out: “It will be a challenge to make sure that appropriate skills and technical knowledge about shale gas production are in place at the local, if not national level. “The issue of ensuring that well informed and correct decisions are made during the local planning process, particularly when deciding on the success of planning applications, has not really been discussed in detail.” February/March 2014 | www.pipeguild.com Member News New device cuts costs and man-hours for Dyno-Rod CJ Kelly Associates’ new VortexCutter device will help shave job time and costs for Dyno-Rod after being introduced as a new tool in the AMG armoury. Nic Evans, General Manager for AMG Southern Services Ltd, said: “Whilst this represents a considered investment for our AMG staff undertaking company, the facility training on the VortexCutter the new cutter brings with it for our operators will be very significant and so makes this a very good investment for us.” Dyno-Rod franchise holder, AMG Southern Services Ltd, provides a wide range of drainage services from unblocking kitchen sinks to CCTV surveys and underground drainage repairs. The company prides itself on its use of state-of-the-art equipment which, in many cases, allows repairs to drains and sewers without the need for expensive and disruptive excavation. AMG were impressed with the VortexCutter for its ease of use and speedy operation. John Kelly, senior partner at CJ Kelly Associates said: “It is a major milestone for us that the new BRAWO® VortexCutter has now found its way into Dyno-Rod’s operations.” Saint-Gobain PAM UK The ‘Natural’ choice for Wessex Water internal design and procurement teams have worked with SaintGobain PAM UK in the development of this pipeline and concluded that ductile iron pipes will offer the lowest whole life cost as well as the flexibility to deliver what will be a challenging construction programme.” Wessex Water has chosen Saint-Gobain PAM UK’s Natural range of ductile iron pipe for a flagship water supply grid project. The scheme will include the construction of a new water main to transfer water from the south of Wessex Water’s region, in Dorset, to Salisbury and promises to improve the security of supply for customers, even in the event of a catastrophic failure. Saint-Gobain will supply more than 70km of its EN545 approved Natural ductile iron pipe in total, the first of which will go towards a twin main section between Sturminster Marshall and Snowsdown. The water company is constructing a number of schemes as part of its water supply grid project to help meet future demand, meet reductions in abstraction licences required by the Environment Agency to improve flows in some rivers and protect their ecology, and deal with seasonal or occasional deteriorating raw water quality. Davin Eversett, Project Manager at Wessex Water commented: “Wessex Water’s project management team in conjunction with the 11 The newsletter of The Pipeline Industries Guild | February/March 2014 | www.pipeguild.com Member News EI provides technical guidance on safe carbon dioxide transport The Energy Institute has completed its latest suite of documents looking at hazards surrounding the safe transport of carbon dioxide from power stations using pipelines. As part of the professional body’s remit to deliver good practice and professionalism across the energy sector, the EI’s carbon capture and storage technical group have focused their latest technical guidance on safe methods of transporting carbon dioxide both across land and sea, from the beach head to the injection platform. This is referred to as being from ‘Up Stream’ at the power station and capture plant to ‘Down Stream’ at the platform. This also incorporates the ‘Mid Stream’, however, the Energy Institute split the analysis between land and sea. Written with the breadth of readership in mind, with interest formed from any section of the stream, the documents highlight the careful use of terminology and phrasing, as these can differ among operational bodies. The primary function of the work uses PHAST to model the unintended release of dense phase carbon dioxide gas offshore. However, the model used was known to be limited as it was not designed to be used on land. The model was chosen as it was the best fit with the constraints in place. The project was therefore designed to act as a first point of reference for anyone seeking to develop a CCS installation. Each developer will clearly require unique modelling, and most probably a computerised fluid dynamic model (CFD). The work describes carbon dioxide specific hazards, and talks about some of the possible mitigation techniques, along with the material properties to be aware of. The work has been developed by the Energy Institute led by Progressive Energy lead developers of the Teesside CCS Project , and Air Products with E.ON, AMEC, CCSA, UK Health and Safety Laboratories (HSL) and the Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute, GCCSI who formed the main committee. Additional review support was received from DNV GL, MMI and National Grid. February/March 2014 | www.pipeguild.com invitation to the National International News Inspection project at Parentis Lake delivers integrity assurance for Vermilion Vermilion Energy has deemed the inline inspection of their key oil pipeline network at Parentis Lake in France a success, thanks to pipeline solutions company T.D. Williamson. to interconnect the lines and ensure that longer inspection runs, up to six miles, were feasible. Work had to be performed from the production platforms, where temporary Pig Launcher launchers and receivers were installed, as well as on tankers used to collect residual from the closures. The popular leisure destination, nestled among pine forests in southwest France, is dotted with numerous oil platforms that Vermilion uses to extract oil from wells as deep as 1.5 miles. Pipelines connect with the lake platforms to transport extracted material, an oil and water mix, to decanting stations in Parentis. T.D. Williamson were tasked with the inspection of a total of 12 oil production lines and one oil transmission line near Bordeaux whilst observing France’s strict DREAL legislation at such an environmentally-sensitive location. “Distributed throughout the lake, the lines scheduled for inspection ranged in length from 1/4 mile up to seven miles. This configuration required TDW to continually transport materials and technicians, by barge, between the production platforms.” View of MFL tool This was T.D.Williamson’s first magnetic flux leakage inspection campaign for Vermilion, and was completed to the customer’s complete satisfaction. Vermilion expressed its appreciation of the technicians’ expertise and T.D.Williamson’s inspection technology. “TDW exhibited a professionalism and ability to work with Vermilion as partners in a collaborative effort to inspect Vermilion pipelines,” said Evan Bloomfield, Asset Integrity Manager - European Operations for Vermilion. “On-site support, conducted during initial technical sales visits through to the time of final report delivery, was of high quality and made executing this project a success.” T.D.Williamson said: “The logistics for this operation required meticulous advance planning and attention to detail by TDW and Vermilion project managers, as well as by boat fleet personnel. Operating Platform “It was critical that the entire operation was carried out with no disruption to production and without negatively affecting the environment in any way, and we achieved that goal,” said Julien Barre, Pipeline Integrity Solutions Project Manager for TDW France. Looking ahead, T.D.Williamson will inspect additional 6- and 8- inch diameter pipelines for Vermilion in the Paris Basin fields this year. “Because portions of the pipeline are located below lake level, a complex series of bypasses were installed Penspen return to Africa to support government initiative The contract will involve a feasibility study for a new pipeline which will deliver refined petroleum products from Kampala in Uganda to Kigali, Rwanda, eliminating the need for tanker transportation. It is believed the resulting Eldoret-KampalaKigali pipeline will bring both economic and environmental benefits to East Africa and the Great Lakes region and is one of several projects of the Tripartite Initiative, a collaborative venture by the three governments that aims to accelerate regional development through investment in infrastructure, trade and economic integration projects. Penspen’s contract focuses on the KampalaKigali segment of the Eldoret-KampalaKigali pipeline, an initiative of the Kenyan, Ugandan and Rwandan governments set for completion in 2017. Other major projects lined up include the $3.5 billion Mombasa-Kampala-Kigali standard railway track and a regional power transmission line. Following their involvement in the development of the Kenyan pipeline system in the 80s and 90s, leading oil and gas engineering company, Penspen, are returning to Africa for a new project. 16 The newsletter of The Pipeline Industries Guild | Peter O’Sullivan, CEO of Penspen commented: “I am delighted that Penspen has been selected for this project. We are keen to contribute to the economic growth of this region through the development of oil and gas infrastructure, and we have a strong history of success in East Africa.” February/March 2014 | View of technical assistance barge www.pipeguild.com Events Be part of the 57th Annual Pipeline Industries Guild Dinner Date: Tuesday 11th March 2014 Venue: The Great Room, Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, W1A 3AA Our guest speaker for this year is Kevin Bridges and our chosen charity is Children with Cancer UK.
