From the Editor:
I had never been to a high school reunion. I almost went to the twentieth but at the last minute I
decided I wouldn’t go. I had no excuse. I just felt that I didn’t need to be there. Five years later I regret that.
As I go through the old yearbook I see so many people that I would like to see again. I realize I let a precious
opportunity go by.
So now I want to atone for that mistake. I decided that not only will I help organize the reunion, I’ll
do what I can to make this one special. The web site was my way to keep everyone connected and engaged
while we contacted everyone. Jack had the idea to gather some background information from everyone for the
event. As the stories started coming in I discovered how much fun it was to read what everyone is now up to.
It gave me an opportunity to make phone calls and send e-mails to classmates that I should have contacted
long ago but now have a “reason” to do so. I had some great conversations with people that made me
remember how much of a friend they were to me. It was also a way to start a new friendship with those that I
didn’t really interact with while at school. The conversations and messages were always happy, but sometimes
sprinkled with regret that we hadn’t done this sooner.
These are the warm feelings I want to share with you, and so the idea for this twenty-fifth anniversary
yearbook was borne. However the information contained here came from all of you, not from me. I thank
everyone who participated to make this a success. Thank you for sharing your stories and your personal
feelings about your life in and after school. I’ll also take this opportunity to apologize to you for being
persistent in your participation. I did get a bit carried away with this project, but I feel it was a good “carried
away”.
I’ll mention that at one time I wanted to include contact information, such as an e-mail address and a
phone number. I understand that people are sensitive to this and I have decided to withhold that from this
publication. However, I did ask everyone if they were willing to allow me to share the contact information
they provided. As such, if you would like to contact an old friend and need an e-mail address or phone number,
you may reach out to me and I will provide that if I have it and if the person is willing to share it.
There is one more reason why I wanted to put this yearbook together. Since I was four years old, Jack
Quirk has been one of the best friends for me that anyone could hope to have. He has helped me out more
times than I am able to repay, like the time he came to my house on a freezing cold Sunday in February to help
me pull my well pump while standing in two feet of snow. When Jack took on the responsibility for the
reunion, I committed myself to providing my friend as much
help as I could. And so what I really mean to say here is that
this yearbook is about friendship. It’s about the friends you
still invite to your home for a picnic, those that you wish you
would, and those friends that you may have forgotten about.
You still have them, you know. They’re all right here.

Reunion Committee
I've really enjoyed reconnecting with everyone, most of whom I
haven't seen or spoken to in the 25 years since we've been out of
school. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone, playing catch-up with
friends I've kept in touch with; reuniting with those I lost touch with
and reminiscing about the fun we had both during and outside of school.

When Dan approached me about getting involved with the reunion, I jumped right in
because I knew Billy Tobin was not going to do one this time, and with only 6 months
before the reunion, it wasn't likely that anyone else would either. Choosing the venue, the
menu, the DJ, and the date was easy. Finding everyone, not so easy. What a relief that
Dan M., Melissa K., Vickey C., and Vickey O. joined the group to help out. With Dan Chiariello, who is a project
manager by trade, as the point man for the group, things just seemed to move along swiftly, smoothly, and in a very
organized manner. Dan set up the website, monitored it, updated it, and pretty much hounded all of us to follow up
on our own tasks. Thats what it takes to get things done. I want to congratulate everyone on the reunion committee
for a job well done. It was fun trying to hunt people down who you haven't spoken to in a long time, 25 years for some
of them. Thanks to Dan McCarthy for use of his office for the meetings we had. And thanks to all who replied to our
emails and sent us their profiles and pictures. Happy 25 years, and here's to the next 25!

It has been wonderful to re-connect with some of the people who I was so close
to so many years ago...and to share “a walk down memory lane.” I still find it
hard to believe that 25 years have passed since we tossed our caps in the air
and began our adventures in life... I hope those 25 years have been kind to all
of us and that we have all found happiness, success and prosperity. Wishing you all the best of everything as our
journey continues!

It was a wonderful experience working with the reunion committee to put together
the event. I only wish we had more time and could have reached more of our
classmates. I would also like to thank Dan Chiariello for putting together such a
comprehensive and exciting web-site for our class. I hope that everyone bookmarks
it as a means to keep in touch and that it becomes an even more effective tool to put together our 30th, 35th, etc. Jack
Quirk also deserves a special mention also for his efforts in taking the bull by the horns and single handedly booking
the Adam Todd for our event. It is hard to believe that 25 years has elapsed since we assembled as a complete group
for the last time on the football field between the "H" goalposts. It is even harder to believe that 38 years have passed
since we started kindergarten! I will always carry a fondness with me for the remainder of my years of my experience
at Hopatcong High for the many good people, including fellow students, teachers and coaches that I spent quality
time with. Another dimension is added as I watch both of my sons proceeding through the school system at what
really seems to be a rapid pace as time refuses to stand still. My eldest, after observing the committee members
assemble for meetings, now realizes that his 25th reunion will be in 2039 when we will be 3 years from our 60th! What
a mind boggling thought. Good health and luck to all as we proceed forward.

Reunion Committee
In pondering the past 25 years since we graduated from HHS, I looked
back upon my life and realized that I have always been immeasurably
blessed. When I look at where I started out in life and where I have
landed, I say, wow, what a ride! When I left Hopatcong and went off to
Boston to attend University and to ‘experience’ life, I left behind the lake, running cross-country, my family and
friends. I left ‘small town’ America for a ‘big’ city. It was so exciting! I studied pre-med, earned a double degree in
Biology and Chemistry, went on to study Genetics and graduated!! I made many new friends, lived in many different
places, met and dated John for 7 ½ years and then married him on Nantucket Island, had a career in Cytogenetics and
Pharmaceutical Sales, gave birth to Kelsea Alyssa, gave up my career to be a full-time mom, started a business ‘for
fun’ and now here I am. A lot has happened in 25 years., I have had 7 apartments, 5 cars, 2 Yorkies, lost
grandparents, lost and gained family members and friends, found old friends and lingered amongst my photographs
and journals remembering all that was, but excited about all that is yet to come.

I like my 40’s. I am done trying to prove what I can be, and what I can do, and can finally embrace who I
am. I love life. I love being married! I love being a mom! I love to travel. I love to help people preserve their
memories. I love being zealous about what I believe in. I love reconnecting with my childhood, and for that I am so
grateful to the HHS Class of ’82 Reunion Committee. If it weren’t for them reaching out to me, I may have missed a
special landmark moment in my life.
I believe that in striving to be an authentic human being we give true testament to being fulfilled by what
really matters. I pray that over the next 25 years I focus on being loving and kind to others, and to leave an
unapologetic legacy. I pray to be able to give the same grace and mercy to others that has been given to me. My
favorite saying is: “There are two ways of spreading light, one is to be the candle; the other is to be the mirror that
reflects it.” I pray that I can shine my light long enough to make a difference, for it is in spreading light that we
change the world. I wish to be able to show the way for someone less fortunate than I and to have been lit long
enough to be remembered. I pray to be remembered as a grateful, loyal, and good friend, a capable mom and a
committed, supportive wife. When I look back, I hope to see that I was a woman of integrity, who reflected joy and
honesty and sincerity. I am so blessed.
I’ll tell you how this got started. On the train coming home from work one day in
May, Dan McCarthy called me about a business transaction he had helped me with.
At the end of our conversation he said to me “So, it looks like we’re not having a
reunion this year.” I paused for a moment and replied “Oh, yeah, it’s our twentyfifth! I hadn’t thought of that.” When we hung up I immediately called Jack Quirk and told him to get right on it.
“Sure,” he said, “like who’s got that kind of time.” I just called to joke with him, but ten minutes later he called me
back spouting out plans for the Adam Todd and for DJ’s and getting hotel rooms. “You’re not serious, are you?!” I
asked. He replied that he had thought about it and concluded that if we didn’t do it, who would? For a moment I
thought “what’s this ‘we’ thing,” but before I let that slip I quickly exclaimed “Okay, let’s go for it!” I then promptly
called Dan McCarthy back, told him it was his fault, and said like it or not he’s on the newly formed Reunion
Committee. (I’ll note that he did like it.). Melissa Krieger wrote about this in Classmates.com and we were happy to
have her join us, or perhaps it’s more appropriate to say that we joined her. A few weeks into the project Vicky
Church offered her help and (probably to her surprise) we accepted it, and soon afterward we recruited Vicki O’Grady.
There were others that helped us from a distance to get the word out, and we thank them as well. My heartfelt
appreciation goes out to everyone I’ve worked with, who donated so much of themselves to make this a special event,
at a time and age when people are very busy in their personal lives.

I had my daughter I couldn't find it in my self to
leave her, so I opened my own child care business,
Angel Wings & Halos LLC. I am almost ready to
get back into the jewelry industry now that my
daughter is in school full time.

Memories The Senior class trip, a lot of us got in trouble and
had a note sent home, I got out of it, I had just
turned 18. Art class was always one of my
favorite times in Mr. Hirlemann's class. Being
crowned Prom and Homecoming Queen, what an
incredible honor. Mr. Rasmusen's Senior
homeroom class couldn't be topped. Skiing trips.
The senior Christmas show. Mr. Werner's class.

Memories Although I did not realize it at the time, the small size of

HHS and the community really enabled everyone in the
class to know each other to some extent. Looking back, it

Favorite Mr. Jack King-I enjoyed his class and the found the inforTeachers mation that I learned valuable throughout my life.. Mr.
Bartz-(although not a high school teacher) introduced me to
my love of music and instilled discipline. He was able to
teach us to dig deep and bring out the best...his message of
"you are only as good as your weakest member" carries
through life. Mr. Menken (rest his soul) what a great human
being. He imparted passion for music and kindness for humanity; a gentle soul, talented musician and wonderful
teacher with so much to offer.

go home???), and lived there for 15 years. After that we moved

Family I have been Married for 22 years and have a terrific son who is 6
years old.
Career Since graduating from College, I have worked as a professional
Graphic Designer. Some companies that I have worked with/for
include; New Jersey Monthly Magazine, Good Housekeeping
Magazine, Parade Magazine. I also did some Advertising work
for Pfizer as an Art Director at a Pharmaceutical Ad Agency. I
currently own my own Graphic Design Business which I started
Memories My best memories of High School were the plays and friends I
hung out with in the Drama club...and of course...art class.
Favorite Miss Winkie, she was terrific and supportive and always encourTeachers aging! and Jim King...the best art teacher! Jim King actually
"pushed" me to try for the Scholarship to SVA. Without his
encouragement, I probably would have missed out on one of the
best opportunities that helped to shape my life.

Memories My most memorable memories were going to watch varsity

soccer games my freshman year and watch the boys
basketball games. I remember getting teased about my
wardrobe and being called Olivia and Bagdad. The summers
at the Hopatcong State Park during our HS days were so
much fun. The prom was the highlight senior year and the
class clowns in english and math class. (Leo, Chin, Mike,
Tom and George) You made me laugh so much.
Favorite I liked Mr. Prestopine (he was organized), Mr. Fincken (best
Teachers driver's ed teacher he gave me great driving tips), Mrs.
Smith(Gym teacher) kept me in shape and always said,
"Hussle in Hussle out.. Huba Huba" funny saying that I
remembered all these years ..and Mrs. Ballard was nice and
helpful.

Memories One of my fondest memories still remains as HHS, it was when I ws granted
the permission to paint the chief that I drew in my printmaking class on the
cafeteria wall, it's still there! I loved running Cross Country, taking
Photography and Art classes, opportunities to learn and get to know new
people and build relationships with teachers and peers, volunteer work,
running for office,I loved being the student liaison to the Board of Education,
participating in clubs, like the Drama Club and being in 3 plays., being
dissapointed about never quite making it into National Honor Society by like
one point every single semester, but yet taking honors and high level classes!
Loved the freedom that came with high school, love the campus, loved our
track and football field and of course loved our Cross Country course. I also

teacher for years, even before attending HHS and he gave me my passion for
photography, ceramics, printmaking, watercoloring and the arts in general. I
have to say that there were so many teachers who make an impact and
steered me in the right direction when I got off course, many were not
teachers but became friends.

Career I am currently the Regional Manager for the Southeast for Citibank -The
Student Loan Corporation. I have been with Citibank for the past five
years. Prior to this, I was the Director of Financial Aid at Palm Beach
Community College. I worked for PBCC for fifteen years.

sports, especially soccer. We had a great group of guys and we
all got along real well. Going away to soccer camp and
