October 2016 Welcome Bishop Sharma Lewis! Bishop Sharma D. Lewis, the first African-American woman elected a bishop in the Southeastern Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church, has been assigned to lead the Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church for the next four years. She began her term of office on September 1, 2016. Bishop Lewis will oversee the 1,169 local churches and faith communities and 327,647 United Methodists in the Virginia Conference. She follows Bishop Young Jin Cho who is retiring after leading the conference for the last four years. The Fall Festy in The Draft! Mark your calendars now for The Fall Festy! Saturday October 29, 2016 - 4-6 pm Calvary has hosted Trunk or Treat here on our parking lot since 2008. This event has been well loved and supported by our community. In the last three years, much effort has gone into making this event more life giving for children and families in our community. It has worked! Last year, we greeted approximately 1,500 guests to our event here on our parking lot. And with that, we started praying about what to do in 2016! This year, we are moving! We have secured the entire Stuarts Draft Park and will host our event at the park! We have reached out to other local churches and we have a few that are praying about partnering with us in this ministry. Please continue to talk with family and friends in other Stuarts Draft churches about this opportunity. Could you serve God’s children with the Education Department in making this a beautiful, family-oriented afternoon? Page 1 We are in need of servants, small prizes, hot dogs and buns, and tons of candy! But most of all, we are in need of prayer!! Please pray for the families that will come, for those among us who will serve on that day, and that the goodness of our Lord will be made known in The Draft! Calvary Courier From the Pastor’s Heart…. HALLOWEEN – a day and a tradition that evokes a lot of mixed emotions among Christians. Should we or shouldn’t we? Is this in any way a Christian tradition, or is it strictly a pagan event? The honest answer is that Halloween as we know it today is actually a mix of Christian and pagan traditions! Halloween is an abbreviation of “hallowed evening” and is called this because it occurs on the eve of All Saints Day, a celebration honoring the saints of the Christian faith dating back to the third and fourth centuries A.D. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory officially set November 1 as the date for the observance of the feast. During the Middle Ages the eve of All Saints Day, “All Hallows E’en,” became associated with witches and sorcerers – possibly stemming from Christian churches’ practice of displaying relics of the saints on this day. Poorer churches that could not afford relics would conduct costumed processions; some people dressed as historical saints; other people dressed as angels or devils. Prior to the coming of Christianity, the day was already a celebrated occasion for many non-Christian groups. November 1 was New Year’s Day for the Celtic tribes of Wales, Ireland, Scotland, and Britain. In ancient times the Celts held festivals to honor their sun god and Samhain, the Lord of the Dead. What we today call Halloween was their New Year’s Eve. Bonfires were set, both to honor the sun god and to frighten away evil spirits who had been released by the Lord of the Dead to wreak havoc among the living. When Christian missionaries evangelized and converted the Druids, they turned the unholy night of All Hallows Eve into a prelude for the feast of All Saints Day. When the Romans conquered Britain, they incorporated practices from their harvest festival Pomona, named in honor of their goddess of fruit. Today, we find remnants of this tradition in table centerpieces made of fruit, bobbing for apples in tubs of water, and the drinking of apple cider. Halloween was not widely observed during the first two centuries of American settlement. However, after the Irish potato famine of the 1840s an influx of Irish immigrants caused old traditions to take root here. “Mischief Night” became a part of American culture, as well as an occasion for the conduct of any number of practical jokes (“TRICK or treat?”). So, today Halloween is a mixture of cultures and traditions – ancient and modern, pagan and Christian. Our Christian celebration affirms two central truths: (1) the ultimate conquest of evil by the cross of Jesus Christ, the promise of eternal life, and (2) the assurance that the Christian life is both worth living and triumphant, through the special witness provided for us by all the faithful saints. Since the Reformation, Protestants have understood “saints” in the New Testament sense, as the entire body of Christian believers. On this day we commemorate “the great parade” of Christians – in all times and places – who have finished their course in faith and now rest from their labors. No wonder this celebration was a personal favorite of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism! “TRICK or TREAT?” In Christ, Pastor Charlie CHARGECONFERENCE IS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH AT 4:30 PM Please plan to join us for this annual meeting at which our District Superintendent, the Reverend Dave Rochford, will preside. Members will be asked to ratify our 2017 Budget, vote to elect a slate of lay leaders to direct our administrative committees and guide our ministry efforts in 2017 and beyond; we will celebrate the year of ministry that is drawing to a close and dream for a new year of ministry together. All members and friends are invited to attend, but only members will be permitted to vote. For panning purposes, Charge Conference lasts around 90 minutes. Please note: All persons currently serving in a leadership position, and those persons who will assume a leadership position in January 2017 are EXPECTED to attend. Hope to see you there! Pastor C. Page 2 Calvary Courier Notes from Nancy….. WELCOME to CALVARY UMC (adapted from the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Community, but I wish we had written it first!) We extend a special welcome to all who are single, married, divorced, it’s complicated, filthy rich, dirt poor, yo no habla Ingles. We extend a special welcome to those who are crying newborns, skinny as a rail, or could afford to lose a few pounds. We welcome you if you can sing like our musicians or even like the pastor who can hardly carry a tune in a bucket. You’re welcome here if you’re ‘just browsing,’ just woke up or just got out of jail. We don’t care if you’re more Catholic than the Pope, haven’t been in church since little Joey’s baptism, have never been in a church ever or, got dragged to church as a child. We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but have not grown up yet, and to teenagers who are growing up too fast. We welcome single parents, gay parents, all parents, starving artists, tree-huggers, latte-sippers, vegetarians, junk food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or still addicted. We welcome those who are having problems or down in the dumps and those who don’t like organized religion. We’ve been there too. If you blew all your offering money before you arrived, you’re welcome here. We offer a special welcome to those who think the earth is flat, work too hard, don’t work, can’t spell, or because grandma is in town and she wanted you to go to church with her. You’re welcome if you wear a suit or overalls! We welcome those who are inked, pierced, or both. We offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, had religion shoved down their throat as a kid, or got lost in traffic and wound up here by mistake. We welcome tourists, seekers and doubters, bleeding hearts…. and you. WOMEN’S BOOK STUDY The United Methodist Women, which consists of every woman in the congregation, will meet on Thursday, October 20th at 7:00 pm and after a brief business session, we will discuss our current book, “Walk to Beautiful,” written by Jimmy Wayne, whose name you might recognize. Join Jimmy on his walk to beautiful, and learn about how one person made a huge difference in his life by showing him love and a stable home.
