We, the Engagement Officers would like to take the
opportunity to explain our project which is funded by
Welsh Assembly Goverment (European Social Fund), in
partnership with Welsh Council for Voluntary Action and
Swansea Bay REC.

The project works to help over 16 year olds living across Neath
Port Talbot area by encouraging them to gain as much confident
and skills to move them towards the world of work including
self employment and forming a home based business.
We use a range of methods to assist our clients
including free workshops and classes such as
English, IT, sewing, arts and crafts, one to
one sessions, confidence building etc.
We also help our clients find jobs and
also help them to update their CVs.
The only criteria to participate is the following:
You are a female over 16 years old
You are in reciept of Job Seeker Allowance or other benefits

You have a National Insurance Number
It’s important for us to point out that by providing your
National Insurance Number does NOT affect any of your
benefits.
If you fulfill any of the above and are looking for help we are here to
help you and get you back on track.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
WITH SKETTY PARK COMMUNITY
ne of our most successful workshops, funded under the Engagement
Gateway project, is our Photography Workshop. Running since January and
continually held every Wednesday at Sketty Community Centre, the
workshop helps - among other things - to bring the older and younger
generations together to overcome technological barriers
In addition to this the workshop serves as a
catalyst for the creative exercises of the group,
of

imposed by today’s digital era.

who come together weekly, sharing their enthusiasm and time with their tutors, culminating in an
enjoyable and rewarding creative process.
Since its introduction the workshop has explored many
aspects of photography, ranging from digital portraiture, to
portable lighting studios and day trip shoots to local picturesque locations.

Help and advice with digital editing and photo editing programs is also given,

as the clients, however experienced, are encouraged to expand upon their

clients who have attended the workshop over the last 8 months as well as the
dedication of all involved, most notably Sketty Community First. The success
of the workshop can be attributed to the way it is closely catered to the client
and in the variation of its sessions, which help to keep things fresh and
interesting.
As an ongoing project Swansea Bay REC is hopeful that the photographic
workshop will continue to progress and flourish. The Workshops are designed
to help give both its current and future clients a greater sense of confidence
by providing a friendly, laid-back atmosphere and a template for them to
nurture their artistic outlets.

DIVERSITY DAY WITH NEATH
PORT TALBOT COMMUNITY
Swansea Bay Regional Equality Council (SBREC) has successfully held
four diversity days in Neath Port Talbot Schools. Cefn Saeson, Dwr Y
Felin, Dyffryn and St Josephs have all been very accommodating in an
experience that was aimed at enhancing better community relations
and educating young minds about cultures and communities from
around the world.

Pupils experienced different cultures and
communities from such distant places as Brazil,
the Middle East, India and Africa. They took
part in celebrating music, art and dance from all
over the world including:- Capoeira from Brazil,
African Dancing, Belly Dancing, African Drumming,
Bollywood dancing and Henna painting. They also had
an opportunity to sample flavours of world foods.
A
series
of
educational
workshops
and
training
on
multiculturalism and diversity was carried out by the ‘Helping
Tackle Vulnerability’ team. The schools that took part realised the
importance of raising awareness of equality issues for pupils living in
and around the Neath Port Talbot area thereby making a vital
contribution by allowing us the opportunity to deliver the ‘Diversity
Days’. Swansea Bay REC hopes this has given the pupils a chance to
appreciate being part of a truly global, multicultural society in Neath
Port Talbot and to have experienced a taste of diverse and ethnic
communities in Wales.
Due to the overwhelming success and demand, we are currently in the
process of organising a series of ‘Diversity Days’ in Swansea. The first
anticipated event will take place in Cefn Hengoed Community School
in late September.

CONFIDENCE BUILDING WITH
ENGAGEMENT GATEWAY
This project engages those furthest from the Labour market in order
to give them new skills and increased confidence that will enable them
to become economically active, and which will also lead to greater
social
cohesion
and
sustainable
development
in
the
most
disadvantaged communities in Wales.
We currently have a number of workshops that are being held to allow
participants to meet and socialise with other participants, build up their
confidence and develop and learn new skills. The workshops that we
have on currently include:

ICT workshops
Art Class/ Jewellery making workshops
A Social and Wellbeing Women’s group
Photography workshop
Pilates workshop
As well as workshops, we also mentor and coach individuals on a oneto- one basis. This makes participants feel comfortable and at ease. On
occasions, we have found it easier to deliver the workshops at SBREC
premises, however we make every effort to arrange the workshops
where the clients find it accessible for them. Likewise if participants
need female-only sessions, we allow them to feel relaxed in such an
environment.
One very successful workshop is the ‘Social and Wellbeing

Women’s’ group, where we have a group of 8 females and
we take them out and about. Some of the places that we

picking,
tour with the National Trust across Whiteford – Rhossilli. They have
thoroughly enjoyed themselves and they feel it has really helped them
with their everyday lives. It is expected that these activities will help
them become more confident in embarking on the jobs market.
