To our Friends, Family and Community:
As we approach our 60th anniversary, we reflect upon our past accomplishments and visualize
our future opportunities. Peninsula Volunteers began as a small group of women who wanted to
make a difference in their community. The first meeting was held under an Oak tree, creating
the symbol and name of our monthly member newsletter, Live Oak. We continually look to our
founders for inspiration and guidance. They created an organization set on making social
change. The depth and significance of our accomplishments are not in the facts but in the lives
we have touched and the stories we have helped create:
A 1953 scholarship recipient sent us a letter recently thanking us for the help we gave him and
the impact we had on his life. He “wanted to let you know that your generous contribution more
than 5 decades ago helped me on a rewarding career path.”
The Rosener House family who said “We cannot express our sincere appreciation for the
wonderful care and love you extended to our Dad during the 8 or 9 years he spent at Rosener
house … he really enjoyed his time with you. That caring, love and support you extended our
Dad will never be forgotten.”
The Little House member who says “Little House has given me something to look forward to. I
live close by and enjoy coming over to have coffee in the AM, read the papers, and get a little
conversation. Little House is so important to me--not only me but so many others like myself
who have no family and are by themselves.”
The Meals On Wheels recipient who let us know “With the Meals On Wheels service I am able to
remain in my home and live independently. Without the daily contact, I would feel alone. I
want to thank the Peninsula Volunteers organization who help sponsor the program. Without
the caring people there, most of us would have to move from our long time homes and familiar
neighborhood. Thank you to all of you who work to keep this program going. God bless you all”
We are now laying the foundations for our next 60 years. The “senior” population is growing and
changing, and we are expanding our service formats especially at Little House to be able to serve
both older adults and younger adults. As we all know, our community is one of the most
expensive areas to live in the country, so how do we provide ways to sustain those who built our
community like the Meals On Wheels recipient? We are looking at more senior housing, more
social services, and more nutrition services. We look to educate the younger population on how
to utilize Peninsula Volunteers’ services for themselves and others, as they become the
“sandwich” generation. We are the Peninsula Volunteers of which our founders dreamed.

1947-1960
October 1947- Peninsula Volunteers builds and
operates Stanford Village Day Nursery School for the
children of the returning military. Stanford takes over
operations the next year.
1947- Gerontology is not a word in Webster’s Collegiate
Dictionary, 5th edition
1948- Establish a scholarship program at Sequoia High
School
1949- Little House opens at 630 Menlo Avenue by
encouraging 12 adventuresome people to come in off the
street
October 1949- also saw the opening of the first
Turnabout Shop in South Palo Alto
1950- The success of Turnabout Shop requires a move to
larger quarters
1950- Peninsula Volunteers sends a delegate to the
National Gerontological Conference in Washington DC
1950- Peninsula Volunteers help in the opening of San
Mateo County Adoption Center
1951- Little House relocates to larger quarters at 930
Santa Cruz Ave
1952- Turnabout Shop moves again to larger quarters
& Scholarship program expands to include
Menlo-Atherton High School
March 21, 1954- Little House comes to its present
home at Nealon Park in Menlo Park
1955- Little House success story is documented with an
exclusive program on KGO-TV sponsored by Richfield
Oil Corporation
1955- Addition to Little House & Scholarship program
expands to Palo Alto High School
1958- Another Addition to Little House
1960- Scholarship program expands to Cubberley,

1961-1981
1961- Peninsula Volunteers Properties, is the first
private organization to receive a construction loan from
HUD’s predecessor, Housing and Home Finance Agency.
The loan is used to build Partridge/Kennedy for low
income seniors. The facility is completed August 30th
with rent of $65. Again trees play a part to the core of
who we are, in the middle of the courtyard, a small tree
is planted, today, as you can see on the front of this
report, that tree now towers over the courtyard.
1962- Peninsula Volunteers and Little House members
support Agnew State Hospital, Veteran’s Hospitals, and
San Mateo County Home
1966- Little House physical layout expanded to 18,000
square feet to provide more services, by the addition of a
auditorium and crafts wing
1967- Little Shop opens allowing Little House groups
and classes to sell their hand crafted items
1971- Peninsula Volunteers receive an invitation to the
White House Conference on Aging
1973- Peninsula Volunteers fund and encourage others
to volunteer through Retired Senior Volunteer Program
(RSVP)
1976- Rent is still $65/mth at Partridge/Kennedy
1977- Meals On Wheels begins delivering meals to the
homebound as an outgrowth of bringing meals to Little
House members who couldn’t attend
1978- Rosener House Adult Day Support Center opens
at 120 Amherst Avenue
1979- Peninsula Volunteers Pre-retirement Seminars
aid in planning for the more than ¼ of their life after
retirement
1980- Rosener House moves to Fremont School, 1060
Middle Avenue
1981- Peninsula Volunteers Properties build Crane
Place with 93 units in Menlo Park providing additional
low income senior housing for the community

1982- Graduate Scholarship program expands to UC –
San Francisco doctorate program
1988- Peninsula Volunteers began Health Insurance
Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) program in
San Mateo County
1990- PVI’s budget is $1.3 million
1995- Remodel and renaming of Little House, as the
Roslyn G. Morris Senior Center
2000- Rosener House relocates to Veteran’s Hospital
during construction of the new facility
2001- Dedicates New Rosener House building – $3.1
million facility specifically designed for Adult Day
Services
2003- Peninsula Volunteers removes “Senior” from
Little House name and eliminates the age requirement
2004- Peninsula Volunteers Little House expands
services with collaborations with UC Santa Cruz Life
Long Learning and Sequioa Adult Education
2005- Peninsula Volunteers expands food services to
other senior centers
2006- Rosener House adds Occupational Therapy
services and expanded Physical and Speech Therapies

2006- Meals On Wheels and local Mayors participate in
the first Mayors for Meals Campaign to bring awareness
to senior hunger
2006- Endowment fund established with $1M seed
donation from Carmen Christensen
2007- Little House Kitchen is remodeled with a goal of
doubling capacity of Food Services and PVI budget is
$4.5 million, more than 100,000+ meals served
annually, and over 35,000 visits to Little House

LITTLE HOUSE
MEALS ON WHEELS
From organized classes and workshops to a
wide array of hobbies and games, members
quickly discover there simply are not enough
days in the week to sample all the
opportunities available at Little House, The
Roslyn G. Morris Activity Center. Along with
the daily lunch program, weekly movies, and
lectures, members at Little House can enjoy a
diverse assortment of activities and events,
including trips and tours, birthday parties,
dances and holiday celebrations.
Meals on Wheels delivers hot nutritious meals
to homebound seniors and some disabled
adults living in south San Mateo County.
This past fiscal year we delivered over 56,000
meals. Our drivers are caring individuals
who spend a few minutes each day talking
with the clients about their health and other
needed services in many cases. The driver is
the only contact for many of these clients, and
provides a lifeline to the community.
Little House offers a variety of health
screenings, as well as information and
referrals that meet a number of senior
concerns including health insurance, legal
and tax assistance, housing information, long
term care, support groups, and estate and
financial planning.
Little House has created partnerships with
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute through
the UC Santa Cruz Extension and with
Sequoia Adult Education by providing rooms
for late afternoon, evening and weekend
courses. In addition, the Fine Art Museums of
San Francisco and the Asian Art Museum
provide monthly lectures on a variety of
topics.
Our home delivery of fresh meals, along with
referrals for other important in-home
services, often allow our clients to remain
independent in the comfort of their homes and
in their familiar communities as long as
possible.

ROSENER HOUSE
In 2008 Rosener House Adult Day Services will
celebrate 30 years as a resource to the
community for older adults living with
limitations and challenges. Rosener House
provides structured therapeutic activities and
support services in a caring environment that
is enjoyable and emotionally supportive.
Participants are offered a wide range of
stimulating activities including art, music,
reminiscing, and entertainment. Physical,
occupational, and/or speech therapies are also
available for participants. A specialized
Dementia Services Program is designed to
support and maintain capabilities. Families
benefit from the respite and are offered support
groups, counseling, and educational workshops
as well. Rosener House is a participant-driven
program, and interests and needs of both
participants and their families are considered
when planning activities and services.
A note that was received recently with a
memorial donation reads: “Thank you so much
for everything that you did for mother and me
while she was in your program. We both
gained so much from participating in your
various programs. We both felt that she had a
safe place to go to with good programs, good
food, and good friends.”

Partridge/Kennedy Apartments
Partridge/Kennedy Apartments is currently at
100% occupied and serves a wonderful
population of very low income seniors.
Although it receives no federal assistance, it
still manages to offer safe, well maintained
housing at far below market levels. Along
with Crane Place, Partridge/Kennedy
provides the majority of low income housing
for seniors in Menlo Park.
Crane Place
Crane Place is a 94-unit apartment setting for
low income seniors. Residents of this site
receive significant financial assistance from
HUD’s Section 8 program. 2007 marks the
year Crane Place and Peninsula Volunteers
paid off its HUD mortgage, paving the way
toward future projects such as new siding,
new landscaping, and a remodeled kitchen
that serves resident dinners Monday through
Friday. Crane Place also has a new and
ongoing Social Service Coordinator whose
primary role is to link residents to services in
the community to support the important goal
of “Aging In Place.”

Jane West - 2007 Honoree
As we thank our partners and collaborators, we
would be remiss in not thanking all of our
volunteers without whom we would not be here. We
would especially like to honor and recognize our
2007 Diamond Award Honoree, Jane West.
A member of Peninsula Volunteers since 1956, Jane has
been awarded every possible honor from the organization.
In 1995, the remodeled Little House Great Room was
renamed The Jane West Room in her honor. In 2002, she
was awarded the Beth Kuechler Award, presented to a
Peninsula Volunteer who exhibits the highest ideals and
who has contributed years of continuous service and dedication to the organization. In honor of
her status as a “Golden Girl” with fifty years of membership, she was awarded Honorary
Membership and serves on the Board of Directors as a Member Emeritus. In addition to her
tireless work on behalf of Peninsula Volunteers, Jane has been a strong influence in the City of
Menlo Park where she has lived for 57 years. Jane, served on the Menlo Park Housing
Commission for 16 years, and is also active in St. Raymond’s Parish. Recognition of Jane’s
efforts in the community have not been limited to Peninsula Volunteers‘, she is a past recipient
of Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce Golden Acorn Award and of the Kiwanis Club’s Citizen of
the Month Award.
As Director of the Annual Giving Campaigns, Jane has personally raised over $2 million since
1999 and has increased the average donation every year. She says that raising money is easy
and that people are just waiting to be asked for a donation. “The key to obtaining contributions
from donors year after year is to start small and to continue to thank people throughout the year,
not just once.”
