Abraham Lincoln had many close
political and legal associates from the
Bloomington-Normal area, including
Supreme Court Justice David Davis, whose
influence on Lincoln’s legal career and run
for the presidency was crucial to his success. A tour of the David Davis Mansion
reveals these details as well as what life
was like for a wealthy Victorian family. The
McLean County Museum of History rounds
out the Lincoln story by introducing the
city and the people that Lincoln would have
known. Maps for walking tours featuring

Ever wonder about the success story behind
America’s Favorite Nuts? It’s a history that
began back in 1937 when Arlo Shirk and his
father, Edward, purchased a small confectionery
store in Downtown Bloomington and the unique
sweet and salty recipe for “Jumbo Red Skins.”
Today, BEER NUTS, Inc. products include a wide
range of nuts and snack variety mixes produced
at a single 100,000 square foot manufacturing
facility in Bloomington under the direction of the
next generation of the Shirk family with a continued commitment to quality and freshness.
Visitors should be sure to stop at one of two
local BEER NUTS Company Stores.

Avanti’s Italian Restaurant was established
in Normal in 1971 and is known for their home
style pasta, pizza, salads and sandwiches.
Avanti’s trademark however, is fresh Italian
bread prepared and baked in the restaurant
kitchen. Avanti’s has long been an institution for
Illinois State University students and faculty, and
the restaurant frequently welcomes second generation guests and staff members. The staff and
management are experienced professionals who
understand how to prepare and serve steaming
hot, delicious Italian meals and fresh bread in a
clean, comfortable atmosphere. Avanti’s Italian
Restaurant provides a very rare combination of
homelike surroundings and high quality food.

entertainment and, if you can keep on going, a
visit to one of the lively night spots. There is
something for everyone!
The Downtown Bloomington Association is proud
to serve the downtown community by providing
activities such as the nationally recognized
Farmers’ Market, as well as a variety of exciting
events that occur on the First Friday evening of
every month. Those events include winter’s Tour
de Chocolat’, spring’s Tour de Metro and Area
Artist Showcase, autumn’s Around the Corner Art
Walk and winter’s Once Upon a Holiday weekend, featuring Live Holiday Window Vignettes.

Founded in 1857, Illinois State University is the

Illinois State University
with an emphasis on the undergraduate program, offering more than 188 fields of
undergraduate study across 34 academic
departments. The Graduate School coordinates
39 master’s programs in addition to two specialist and nine doctoral programs.
The 350-acre campus includes more than 60
major buildings with state-of-the-art technology. Watterson Towers is one of the area’s
most unique structures, as this residence hall
is the tallest building between Chicago and St.
Louis. Other major facilities include a Center
for the Performing Arts, a 360-acre farm, Bone
Student Center and Braden Auditorium, a
University Planetarium, Redbird Arena and
Hancock Stadium. ISU is a vital part of the
Bloomington-Normal community.
Illinois State University is also the home of
Redbird athletics.
Illinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, is
a highly selective, residential liberal arts university
with an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students. The University consists of the College of
Liberal Arts, with 17 academic departments
including a division of business; the College of
Fine Arts that includes professional Schools of
Art, Music and Theatre; and the School of
Nursing. The beautiful 80-acre campus is a mix
of traditional and modern facilities. Recent additions include the state-of-the-art Ames Library,
the Center for Natural Sciences and the Shirk
Center for Athletics and Recreation, regarded as
one of the finest athletic facilities in the country.
The Minor Myers Jr. Welcome Center is a
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) Green Building and is home to the Office
of Admissions and the Hart Career Center. The
newest addition, State Farm Hall, contains the
latest in teaching technology and was built to
LEED specifications. It also uses an efficient geothermal system to heat and cool the building.
Illinois Wesleyan University is also home to the
Titans, men’s and women’s athletic teams.
