GENERAL SWIM LESSON INFORMATION
National YMCA Swimming programs are designed to teach personal water safety, stroke development, water sports & games, rescue and personal
growth skills to children. Our program is divided by age and skill levels. Advancing to the next level is dependent on the child’s completion of required skills. Children learn at their own pace. Session length does not guarantee that all children will advance to the next level. All instructors are
trained to work with children.
HOW OLD IS YOUR CHILD?
The YMCA offers swim lessons for all ages and
abilities. Please answer the questions below
regarding your child’s swimming ability to place him/
her in the correct class. If you have any additional

six groups by age: 6 and under, 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-18, the teams encourage regular
swimming to build endurance, muscle strength, and cardiovascular fitness.
The benefits of swimming include sportsmanship, time management, self discipline, goal setting, and an
increased sense of self worth through sport participation.
Participation on the team is based on basic swimming abilities.
To participate in the 8 and under groups, young people must be able to swim one length of the pool doing
freestyle/front crawl and one length of the pool doing backstroke/back crawl. Nine year-olds and older must be
