Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Historic Monographs Collection INFORMATION The Rochester School for the Deaf was opened in the year 1876. It Was established for the education of deaf children and those whose hearing Was so impaired as to render it difficult for them to receive proper instruction in the public schools. Some children, whose speech has been defective, have also been received. The school is free to all who receive county or state certificates. It is an incorporated institution under the control of the State Department of Education and supervised by the State Board of Gharities; and is non-sectarian. In the education of the pupils no signs are used either in the classrooms or outside. The pupils live in an atmosphere of English, spoken, written or spelled. All are taught speech and speech-reading; and as far as possible the courses are arranged as in the Public Schools of the State, the pupils taking the Grade and Regents Examinations. Some are also prepared for Gollege entrance. The school session continues for forty weeks—from the second week in September till the third week in June ; and the parents are free to visit the school at any time. They are notified regularly regarding the health and progress of their children. In addition to the ordinary branches of instruction, the girls are taught domestic science, sewing, dressmaking, rug weaving, etc., while the boys are taught printing, carpentry, wood-carving, painting, etc. For further information address, T.
