Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection w West High School ROCHESTER, N E W YORK PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASSES OF 'Nineteen i^KssSKsszassCKssCJs^CK^EC^ Twenty-Seven Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection (JOKE WORD "History repeats itself"—and we find West High returning to a truly year book. In combining the two classes for the production of a single annual, we hope that the book may thus reflect the school rather than the individual group and prove of greater interest to the entire student body. With the inauguration of the double year book, we feel that the success of the "W" will, to a great extent, determine the success of the plan, as well as the style of future annuals. With this idea in mind we have tried to present the best. Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection ;2£~^^ GLASS TOEM Above thee, all the stars of heaven shine And, at thy portals where the tread Of many passing feet Has left its fair, immortal mark The passing years bow down To kiss the grey moth-dust That lingers in the twilight after-glow And clings in soft form of what once was. Beyond thee, eventime pauses To see such homage paid As neither kings nor kingdoms can command And for a moment, that grim scythe is stilled That cuts away the years Like blades of golden wheat. Would that our hearts might sing The tale that builds about thy walls; A song with mellow notes That transforms thee all at once Into a fair and lofty span Across the brink of time. —GERALD BARBOUH. - \ Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection I Miss FLORENCE BROWN January Miss ETHEL KATES June MR. Coach Tichenor's men dropped one game to our purple clad rivals and the other to Technical High, but defeated both Charlotte and Lima. Shedd, Montgomery and Kelly stood out as the stars in as fine a backfield as West High has known. The defensive playing of Bob Leinen, captain-elect, Persse and Rekers, goalie extraordinary, was far above par. In fact it was by the efforts of these men that the total of the oppenents' goals proved but half that of West High. Though overshadowed by the all-star backfield, the forward line helped swell the total. Schantz, Schautz, Weir, Black, D'Andrea, Atterbury and Shepherd saw service in forward berths for most of the games.. After dropping two meets to Hutchinson High of Buffalo, the tankmen ran up an impressive score of seven victories, defeating East, Monroe, Manlius, Syracuse Frosli and Buffalo Bennett High. The West High Team also took first place in l>otli the City Scholastic Championship and the Sectional Meet. A good deal of this success was due to Manager Collin's hard work and Captain Mercer's excellent swimming. Cole and Moore also led in the scoring. Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection '-^£CffiSCZ£n Track On the indoor track the team this year proved invincible. Not only did they win the much coveted Niven Cup, but also defeated East High in two closely contested meets. Captain Paul Rekers broke the scholastic record, covering the half mile in four minutes, forty-two and one-fifth seconds. The Cross Country team easily outran all contestants for local honors. In a hard fought race, Captain Corlett and his men defeated the Colgate Frosh, twenty-seven to twenty-eight. In the Alfred Inter-Scholastic Run they finished second, losing to Masten Park of Buffalo by a point. The outdoor track team promises to be as successful as either of these. Due to the necessity for early publication of this book it was found impossible to include a satisfactory picture of the team. Townshend, Kelly, Rohr and Schaefer, four veterans from former teams, will probably prove the mainstays in Coach Hulek's line-up. The rest of the squad will be drawn from new material. With the support of the student body, baseball should prove a profitable sport this year. Secretary Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection Extracts from the diary of J, a boy in the January class, 1927, which reveals very little: Monday, January 28, 1924. Started in at West High today. Queer place. Statues in the middle of the hall and kids hang around them 'cause you have five minutes between periods. Didn't wear any coat or sweater at first, but decided I'd better after a few periods. Was late to one class on account of Ted and I were looking for the elevator. Which we couldn't find, but Ted's big brother, Jack, told him the Seniors used it. Ted is in the same Latin class as I am and a lot of other kids from Madison. The ones from Jefferson all sit over near the windows. Marjorie Harber is the only one I can remember. We got out of school early so I went over to Madison to visit some of the old teachers Saturday, November 15, 1924. Had my hair cut today in preparation for the Soph Dance. Wore my new blue cheviot suit and new shoes, which are brown Oxfords. It was held at the school. Some of the fellows took girls, but I think that is nonsense. There are a bunch of seniors who walk around the halls with girls, and they look perfectly sappy. Ted and me got to the dance early, and we stood around with the rest of the fellows near the orchestra. They had a swell drummer! Bruce and Jane started to dance and some of the other fellows too. I danced with Sara Swanson and Lucille Young and a lot of other girls from Madison. There was a dizzy entertainment, so Ted and I sat in the back of the assembly and laughed. Iona Davis was in charge and Viola Rankin and Gil Maloney took part. There were only a few from Jefferson in the show, which were Dorothy Weaver, Challice Swart and Alice Schneider, I think, which only goes to show which is the better school. It was about a fellow coining into a railroad train, which was a row of chairs, and Viola Rankin strummed a ukulele and sang "Comin' Down from Bangor." The eats were good but not enough of them. The party ended at 11 o'clock. I wanted to take Sara Swanson home, but Freddie Connors had probably asked her. (Continued on page ll.fi t 110 Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection Some pages from the diary of B, a girl in the June class, 1927, which reveal some very bad grammer and composition forms, and also give some interesting comments upon various topics: Saturday, November 5, 1926. Last night was the class sophomore party at school and I got there about quarter after eight and found hardly anybody there. They had fixed the corridor up quite nice and down at the girls end there was a sofa and some chairs and some rugs and some floor lamps. All of which looked very nice and all the girls were there sitting on the sofa or trying to and so after I had taken off my coat and hat I joined themThe boys all stayed down at the other end at the piano by that funny looking statue with the spear in its hand. After about twenty minutes someone said there was an entertainment in the assembly so we all went in and Helen and Catherine and Margaret and Jane and I sat in one row. And in the row behind us were some boys that Jane said were the Hartman twins but she wasn't sure and they made such funny remarks that I laughed all through the performance which was quite dumb and all in pantomime. It was a sort of a play where they didn't speak anything and one boy made love to another boy dressed up in a sheet and a queer looking head-dress Jane said that the girl was Charles Pritchard and that the boy was Paul Showers and that the other boy was Stephen McKay but I haven't the slightest idea who any of them are, in fact I never heard of them before, which probably they're just some of those queer people from Madison. After that we had dancing which was about nine o'clock and the orchestra was just divine and almost as good as the one we had at our Senior party when we left Jefferson but the boys wouldn't dance but just all stood around the wall and grinned and as I was just dying to have someone ask me because the orchestra was really wonderful I started dancing with Helen. Which quite a lot of other girls did too and then Donald Walker started to dance and I could hardly keep my eyes off from him even if he did come from Madison because he is the Vice-President of the class and dances very well. And Theodore Kelly started dancing too, who is the president of the class, so after a time the floor was quite crowded. And I danced with quite a lot of boys including Carlton Thayer from Jefferson who really would dance quite well if his feet weren't so extremely long. I also danced with a boy from Madison who had a large nose called Joe Wilson and he was quite a nice boy and I would have liked to have danced with him only a rather obnoxious rowdy from Madison called Raymond Foster cut in and I just had to dance to be polite but he really was a better dancer than Carlton Thayer even if he did come from Madison. About half past ten they told us to form in line to get our "daintys " which were the dessert and some cakes. And I went and had my fortune told by a man that Mr. Hall our faculty advisor, said was a professional fortune teller but who turned out to be merely a boy from Madison called Tony somebody and after that father came with the car to take me and Helen home only I wished he hadn't because there was a boy that I think wanted to take me home who was quite handsome even if he did come from Madison, which I believe he did. She is the girl I met the other (lay. She comes from JefferTook Bson, but she is certainly wonderful. It is not such a bad school. Asked her to go yesterday, and felt weak all over while I was doing so. I wasn't scared, but my knees began to tremble. Anyway she accepted and we went tonight. Got a ride with Perry Esten, who has a Junior license. Had to wait about a half hour at her house, and thought I was going to be late, but when she came tripping down the stairs, it didn't much matter. We had seats near the front with Betty Wagner and Art Sickles. Thelma Keefe sat near us, and applauded very loudly when Gile came on the stage. He was a thug, I guess, though he didn't seem very tough to me. Brownell Jamison was a policeman, so we call him Labienus the lieutenant. Addie Clark was also in it, though I don't care much for him for he comes from Jefferson. It was a mystery play, and Stan Wright tried to shoot Kay Ryan, but he couldn't get the gun out of the safe, so he stepped up and took a vicious cut at her, which missed her by two feet. Jim Shedd, who is president of the class although he came from .Jefferson, almost blew his arm off later when he took it from the safe and it went off in his hands. Bethine Coe was the heroine and she and Charlie had a finale, and B leaned over to me and I felt foolish, cause I knew that Ted was sitting right behind me with Pete Braal and Line Burrows. Miss , who is B's English teacher, turned around and asked her if she'd handed in her themes. You should have heard B look at her. Somebody sent Showers a calla lily, and I laughed my head off; but B thought it was a kind sentiment. Spent the rest of my money at Mike's, cause Sickles would stop in and have something to eat, and B had to pick out the most expensive thing in the store. I guess I must have been quite foolish to think that the people in Madison were inferior to those in Jefferson for J. has hair that is awfully pretty and it is inclined to curl too. Anyhow I enjoyed the play a lot which was the Seven Keys to Baldpate, a mystery play. We sat right in back of Miss (omitted by the editors) who is my English teacher and between the acts she had the nerve to turn around and ask me if I was getting any better in my composition work but I just gave her a cool look and I guess that put her in her place. Well the play was very exciting being all about a mayor of a city who stole some money and hid it in a safe on top of a mountain in the middle of winter so that his trusty man could come up and get it only the trusty man confided in a girl, Myra Thornhill, who planned to double cross them all but Charles Pritchard who was the hero held them all up and saved the money for the heroine who was Bethine Coe but Stanley Wright killed Myra Thornhill who was Catherine Ryan, which was very funny. It seems that the only gun which had a blank cartridge was in the safe and Stanley was to open the safe only the door stuck so he couldn't and he went over and hit Myra and she fell over dead which rather spoiled the effect but the play was very exciting. Robert Kazmayer was just too cute for words as a crazy man. His acting was very convincing because he acted very natural. Helen Brandt screamed so that I had cold chills all night and Jean Dix made an excellent wife for Alden (lark but they always did go around together. Robert Redfern and Gile Miller really were very exciting and so was Paul Showers and Robert Mailman who was a perfect scream as the deputy. And then it all turned out in the end that they were only a company of actors and nobody was shot at all so it was quite a comedown and they turned out the lights just when Charles Pritchard went to kiss Bethine Coe but I leaned up against J. just the same so it was very rcmantic even if you couldn't see it all very well. And then in the end you find out it was only a book that this author was writing so it was all very confusing and they gave the girls flowers and some of the boys big calla lilies. Afterwards J. took me over to Mike's and I had a West High Special but I regretted it as soon as I hud ordered it because I know that was why he said he was on a diet and only took a glass of water but it was really delightful and I hope he asks me to go to his fraternity dance which happens next Saturday night. She talked all the time. All about the girls' fashions, and Ednae Took BMauley's dresses and Art Sickle's hair, and then she asked me if I thought Jim Shedd was elected president of the school because of his record as stage manager, and why did Pete Braal have to read that big book in assembly and didn't Gordie Barons look cute up on the platform, and why did Wheeler always take the boys' side and did I see Bethine Coe and Charlie over there, and a lot of other nonsense. "The Goose Hangs High" was the name of the play, and it was pretty good. All about some collegiate fellows, a nd their families. B had to cry but I couldn't see anything funny. However, I noticed that Jack Collins and Jim Cole kept watching me, so I felt that I couldn't even blow my nose without it looking suspicious. Good play! They had a collegiate Ford (only it didn't come on the stage) and Magro had to smoke a big black cigar. He didn't look so good, but he was better than Fisher, who was supposed to smoke two "coffin nails" but only held them in his hands. They brought a dog on the stage and it caused so much commotion that Sickles took it right out. And Ednae Manley said a few "damns," whereupon B thought it one of the best plays she had heard. Had trouble with the old Ford tonight. Couple of flats! B didn't seem to mind. She certainly is a wonderful girl. But she talks an awful lot. Friday, January U, 1927. Took B to the Senior Dance. Ruthe Snyder, who was chairman, arranged to get the Midnight Serenaders, which is a very smooth orchestra. We started off the dancing, and I might have felt foolish if it had been with another girl than B . She is a fine dancer. She told me the other day that I dance divinely, and then she wanted to know if they were going to allow any from outside the class to attend the dance. It couldn't have been a hint, cause she knows that I wouldn't take any other girl to the dance, although I had to go alone. But we quarreled the other day, and I don't know but she may have wanted to make up. She wore the same green dress that she wore to the Seneca last week. I bought a slick necktie the other day, and a lot of the fellows complimented my taste. Harmon Hinchley and Durewood Hill cut on me during the evening. I could have blasted them both. So I stood over on the side lines with Albie Thomas and Gene Lynch. Would have liked to cut on Sally Swanson or Dot Bachers, for both are good dancers, but I know that B doesn't like me to do so, even if Hinchey had cut on me. Girls are funny. But B siu^ is one wonderful girl. Albie Thomas had the nerve toafk. me for my three dollars which all us seniors owe right in front of several other fellows. lie is too business-like, although I saw him dancing with Hazel Meyer and Kutlie Snyder. Everybody had a pretty good time. Sam Kingston and Franklin Inglis and Gene Lynch brought up some tables and the refreshments were served in the hall. Mr. Naramore and his wife, and Mr. Spinning and Miss Manchester and Miss Brown and Mr. Edgeeumbe who were all at the party started one of thos crazy dances that Noah used to get the animals in the Ark. It is called the Paul Jones, and 1 lost B in the mob. The party lasted till 11 and we were about the last ones out. Last night I went to the Senior play with J. which was the Goose Hangs High being the craziest name for a play that I ever heard for, it wasn't about geese at all but about college students and mother says she thinks it was very well named, meaning a slam at the college students I suppose. But the play itself was really delightful and all about a man and his wife who were supposed to be married and they had twins in college and a son who was in Xew York City who was engaged. The father and mother were Margaret Erb and Paul Showers and the twins were Carl Fisher and Edna Manly, who always spells her name Ednae and Art Sickles was the older son who was engaged to Helen Lobbett as Dagmar Carrol. Mary Helen Sneck was the crabby old grandmother and she certainly was a real type. Helen Mann was Julia Murdoch and her son was Durwood Hill whose name was Ronald and every other minute Helen would say, "Come, Runnuld, ' in a very affected voice which just kept me laughing continually. Joe Magro and Robert Moehlman were men that worked in the city hall and they both did fine and Joe smoked a big cigar just like a real pollyticain. LaRue Pattison was just darling as Rhoda the maid and she announced dinner just like she had always been a real maid. There were some awfully good spots in the play such as in th and made love to Helen Lobbett I leaned up against J. and he didn't even move away like he did at the Junior play which shows that he certainly is a full-fledged senior. However I think I IikeJ.s hair much letter than I do Art's because his is too smooth although he is a really wonderful dancer and I shall never forget the time he took me to the dance at Windsor. After the play J. took me home in his old Ford which is just delightful even if it hasn't any top or lenders and two springs are broken and we had two flat tires on the way home to say nothing of the fan belts breaking so that I didn't get home until half past two but I had a wonderful time even if I did get a bawling out. But I didn't get up until eleven thirty this morning and I really feel almost too weary to go to the Seneca with J. tonight which however 1 am going to do. {Continued on page 121) Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection Friday, January 8, 1927. Graduated tonight. B and I were talking it over. It seems she had spent sleepless nights because I was going to leave school, but I had decided to take a P. G. course just to be with her. At any rate, when she found out today, she was quite mad. Thought that I had been tormenting her. Said she'd never go out with me again and wouldn't speak to me, and furthermore, she said she wouldn't break that date with Joe Wilson. She must have forgotten all about it though, for when I called at her house she was all ready to go to the exercises. It was a beastly bother. They had some musical numbers and some essays and some professor spoke and the only reason I stayed awake was because I knew B was watching me. But everybody liked it very much. The speech was about "It" and I was disappointed because it wasn't about Elinor Glyn's "It. " Jim Shedd, who is still president, had to give the class gift of one hundred and fifty dollars. I don't know where they ever got the money, but it doesn't matter. Suppose those two plays helped a lot, though I thought we spent that on the party. Felt like a perfect sap walking across the platform to get my diploma. Mr. Spining read my middle name, which is Henry, and I felt terrible cause Ted, who flunked into the June class, was giggling in the front row. But it's all over now, and I'm coming back for a P. 6 . course. Hope everything is all right between B and me, for — . . . 120 Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection ft Saturday, January 9, 1936. Well it's all over by now for which I am very glad for the past two weeks have been just misery and I haven't had one whole night of rest since J. said he was going to go to work after graduating. I got so worked up thinking I wouldn't be with him so much after the new term began I was just sick and yesterday morning when he came to ask me to go to graduation with him I nearly cried because of thinking it would be the last time I would really see him again and then he told me that he was going to take a post graduate course and stay right on in school till June. Well it made me so mad to think he had left me in such awful doubt for so long that I told him he was just as unthoughtful as he could be and that I wouldn't go to any graduation with him and that I hoped I never saw him again and that I was going with Joe Wilson which was a lie because he couldn't get in and then that tall blonde wouldn't let him out of her sight anyway. But it made quite an impression as I could see so I made out I was very angry and went in the house and slammed the door saying I wouldn't go with him and then I spent the whole day fixing up that dress he likes so well so that I could wear it that evenimg. The graduation was a nice affair I guess but I didn't hear a thing the speaker said because all I could do was look at J. and he certainly did look handsome. After the exercises after he had walked across the stage and gotten his diploma which he did very well and looked just like Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., we went down to the coffee shop as a sort of celebration and after that he took me home only I didn't go in right away but sat out in front in the car and 121 Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection ft Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County · Yearbook Collection " T R A I N I N G THAT PAYS' MECHANICS INSTITUTE ROCHESTER, N.
