meet the interns
I
n 1945 we established an intern program
that was the first of its kind in the nation.
The first intern hired was a young co-ed from
California named Betty Ebert, who later married
Jack Ragotzy. Together they founded the
Barn Theatre. Another former intern, James
Pentecost, went on to stage manage the
Broadway productions of Romance Romance and
LaCage aux Folles. In additon, Mr. Pentecost
served as Production Supervisor for the
Broadway revival of Gypsy starring Tyne Daly
and produced the Disney film Pocahontas.
Tina Newhouser, a Civic intern (1992-1994)
stage managed Say Goodnight Gracie on Broadway
and was part of the stage management team for
the Broadway musical The Boy From Oz, starring
Hugh Jackman. Civic intern Amy Jackson (20002002) worked on the design team for Oprah.
And, as you may know, our Managing Director
Kristen Chesak began her career as a Civic intern.
Over the years our intern program has grown
in scope. We recruit and interview candidates
from all over the country to fill internship
positions. Upon completion of their first season,
interns may apply to renew their contract for a
second year. In rare instances, a third year
contract is offered.
The Night Before Christmas
AUDITIONS
October 7 & 8 at 7:00pm
From the first concept meeting for an
upcoming production through strike, our interns
contribute to the creative process. This valuable
program provides a transitional step between
one’s formal education and a professional
career. It’s an opportunity for an intern to put
into practice the fundamentals learned in the
educational arena.
We currently employ seven talented interns.
Returning to our costume shop are second year
Costume Design Interns Shannon Healy and
Rachel Jahn. During her first season at the Civic,
Shannon designed Honus and Me, A New Brain
and Brighton Beach Memoirs while Rachel created
the designs for King Lear, The Musical Comedy
Murders of 1940 and How I Became a Pirate.
A graduate of Vanguard University,
Jonathan deRoulet is our first year Lighting
and Sound Design Intern. He comes to the
Civic from sunny California. Jamie Bray, our
first year Technical Direction Intern, is from
Snellville, Georgia. She earned her degree in
Theatre from the University of West Georgia.
First year Stage Management Intern
Caitilin McCoy is a recent graduate of Winona
State University, with a major in Theatre Arts.
We are also pleased to be welcoming first
year Scenic Design Intern Heidi Larson, who
recently completed her MFA in Scenic Design
from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Heidi joins third year Scenic Design Associate,
Jack Yates. Jack’s designs include Brighton Beach
Memoirs, All Shook Up, Ain’t Misbehavin’ and the
upcoming Legally Blonde, the Musical.
One only has to spend a little time with
these seven talented artists to appreciate the
contribution they will make to the Civic. Please
join us in celebrating their accomplishments.
W
e will be casting the roles of
Rufus and Bruiser in Legally
Blonde, the Musical with the help of
our friends at the SPCA of Southwest
Michigan and Canine Safe Harbor.

wonderful organizations please visit

t’s often said that laughter is
the best medicine, and nowhere
is that prescription more accurate than
in this rib-tickling, all new adaptation of
the classic hypochondriac. The wealthy
Argan is housebound with every disease
in the book. Lurking around are any
number of quacks that are only too
happy to (mis)treat him. Family troubles,
including a money-grubbing wife and
two headstrong daughters, only add to
Argan’s miseries. Complete with original
songs, satirical bite and the requisite
bawdiness, this telling of the classic
comedy gets an injection of 1960’s
French pop culture. If you’re looking for
a good laugh, this show is just what the
doctor ordered!
Karen Berthel, Department Chair
for Theatre Arts and an Associate
Professor of Theatre Arts at Kalamazoo
College is directing The Imaginary Invalid.
In her Civic directorial debut, she
leads a talented cast that features
Civic veterans Carrie Bertch (Wait Until
Dark), Keith Erik Brown (All Shook
Up), Adam Carey (The Musical Comedy
Murders of 1940), Kelly Dominique
(Tartuffe), Mark Doster (Annie),
Janet Gover (The Dixie Swim Club),
Tony Holewinski (The Musical Comedy
Murders of 1940), Paul Kriner (Over
the River and Through the Woods), Lars J.
Loofboro (Leading Ladies), AJ Sharief
(Smokey Joe’s Café), Kelly White (Dirty
Rotten Scoundrels) and Ben Zylman (The
Drowsy Chaperone). Sydney Alexander,
Lisa Grace and Carrie Phillips are
making their Civic debuts. The stage
management team is comprised of
Stage Manager Caitilin McCoy and
Assistant Stage Manager Kristin Tyrrell.
The Imaginary Invalid does contain occasional innuendo and double-entendre. With that caution,
it will be best enjoyed by playgoers 14 and up who can keep up with the puns and wordplay.
