They can choose Jesus to be their guide every day. Gospel: Paper Airplane Gospel Children will learn that Jesus is the Super One through this series of Bible stories about Peter. Through adventures in Peter’s life, children will learn how making the right choice makes all the difference; specifically, choose to believe, choose to ask forgiveness, choose to obey, choose to follow. Peter comes to know Jesus the Super One as he experiences Jesus perform miracles to rescue him. This miraculous power to love, rescue and forgive Peter shows that Jesus is a different kind of super hero. Jesus proved he is the ULTIMATE super hero, performing amazing miracles and conquering death. Peter learns that Jesus’ death and resurrection separate Him from all other “heroes” and he chooses to follow Jesus the rest of his life. Following Jesus means making the right choices and Peter learns that making the right choice makes all the difference. Children will learn that Jesus also rescues us, providing us the opportunity to receive the gift of eternal life. They will also learn that just as Jesus changed Peter’s life, He wants to change our lives too. Our response should be the same as Peter’s: choose to follow Jesus, making the right choices. Believing. Forgiving. Obeying. Following. Our goal is for these children to say: iChoose: Jesus the Super One. 2 SAMPLE DAILY SCHEDULE Gathering Game: Choose from the Game List Welcome/Theme Intro (5 min) Game (10 min): Thematic Game Skit (5 min) Bible Story (10 min) Game (10 min): Choose from the Game List Gospel/Invitation (10 min) Gospel Review Game (10 min) Optional Game Snacks Challenge for the Day / Review Announcements 3 PROPS Skit Props Superheros (every day) 2 masks, 2 capes Kid hat (student brings from home) Weatherman weatherman superhero logo sign (laminated sign hung around neck w/ yarn) Captain Righteous thumbs up superhero logo sign (laminated sign hung around neck w/ yarn) The Switcher Question Mark Logo sign, Exclamation Mark Logo sign (laminated sign hung around neck w/ yarn) Escape Logo sign with covered eyes (laminated sign hung around neck w/ yarn) Quickster Shoes/wings superhero sign (laminated sign hung around neck w/ yarn) Hydro Water drop superhero sign (laminated sign hung around neck w/ yarn) Gospel Props DAY ONE Wordless Book Umbrella Gospel Bracelet Supplies (1 per child) DAY TWO Tea bag Scissors 2 rolls Toilet paper DAY THREE Paper Chains DAY FOUR Paper for Paper Airplanes Game Props Cotton balls Water Day 2buckets, 2 sponges, 2 cups, squirt gun 4 Day One Notes 5 iChoose: Jesus The Super One DAY ONE SCHEDULE: Time (Pre-‐Club) 5 min 10 min 5 min 10 min 10 min Club Activity Person Responsible Gathering Game ________________________ Intro to Club Time ________________________ Game Ship Shore ________________________ Skit ________________________ ________________________ Introduce self and team Give brief run-‐down of schedule Explain marker dots on hands Weatherman/Weatherwoman, “Kid” Bible Story Game or Songs 10 min 10 min 5 min 5 min ________________________ ________________________ Gospel Presentation: ________________________ Gospel Review Game ________________________ Gospel Counseling ________________________ Refreshments Review/Challenge/Announcements Peter’s Discovery -‐ Jesus Calms the Storm Matthew 14:22-‐33 Boat Tag Wordless Book/Umbrella Sink or Swim Daily Challenge Water day is Wednesday Summerfest—hand out invitations Bring friends tomorrow Take picture of club Trade in marker dots for prize ________________________ 6 Day One: Peter’s Discovery -‐ Jesus Calms the Storm Scripture: Matthew 14:22-‐33 Main Truth: Choose Confidence To Believe: Children will learn that they can believe Jesus is the Son of God and that He is the way to heaven. Have the kids say “Jesus, the Super One,” while crawling through the tagged person’s legs to unfreeze and rescue. Day One Club Intro Welcome to Back Yard Bible Club! We are going to have an awesome time this week! My name is _______ and here is the rest of the team (introduce the rest of your team by name). We’re so excited about how much fun we’re going to have this week. I gotta know… do any of you have a favorite superhero? That’s great! We are going to have fun this week talking about and thinking about different superheroes and most of all we are going to find out about the greatest superhero of all!! Before we get started, there are just a few things that you need to know about how this week is going to work. My friends and I are going to be on the lookout for good behavior. Every time we see you: *listening when you are supposed to *showing respect to us *answering questions *showing respect to the adults *showing kindness to each other *following instructions We’ll give you a marker dot on the back of your hand. At the end of the day, we’ll count each of your dots and give you a prize for every 3 dots you have! So, pay close attention, so you can get...LOTS AND LOTS OF DOTS! 7 Day One Theme Game I want you to think of our game time as a kind of SUPERHERO ACADEMY, and you are Superheroes in Training. Show me a proper attack stance. Very nice. Superheroes in training, are you ready to get started? It’s Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na—Game Time! (Sing the na nas like the Batman theme song.) Are you ready to play a fun game! Well, first thing I need you to do is to LISTEN very carefully and FOLLOW my directions. This is how the game works… Ship Shore (similar to “North South Central”) Materials: none There is one person that is the Captain. The Captain stands at the front of the group and calls out commands that the kids follow. If the kid does the wrong action, if they are the last one to perform the action, or if it is an action that requires them to get into groups and there is a person without a group, then they are out. “Ship”—all kids move towards the ship (one side of the playing field) “Shore”—all kids move towards the shore (the opposite side of the playing field) “Captain on deck” the entire group has to stand at attention while saluting. If they move at all before you say “at ease” then again they sit out. “Hit the deck”—all players get on the ground, stomach down. “Octopus”—kids lay on their backs with their arms and feet waving in the air. “Man overboard”—everyone gets on the ground and pretends to be swimming. “Row your boat”—groups of three get together in a line and squat. They must act like they are rowing a boat while they sing “Row Row Row Your Boat”. “Eat at the table”—groups of four get together and pretend to eat at a table. “Crow’s nest”—Three kids get together with their backs towards each other and lock arms. Alternate Option Theme Game: Play “Hero Says” like “Simon Says.” Perform super hero type actions. Transition Wow! You guys did a GREAT job listening to instructions during our game today. God wants us to learn how to be good listeners in the little things like instructions to games to give us practice so that we’ll be ready to listen to Him. God wants to speak to you and me. One way He speaks to us is through His Word, the Bible. And I have an AWESOME Bible story to share with you today. It’s one of my favorites. Check this out… 8 Day One Skit Weatherman: Welcome to Comic Fest 2016! Where you can see superheroes, and even be a superhero. Kid: Yay! This is awesome! (looking around) Look over there it’s the Batmobile, and over there is Spiderman. (looks at WM) Hi there, who are you? Weatherman: Well, I’m the “Weatherman”! (strikes hero pose) Kid: Cool, what do you do? Weatherman: My superpower is amazing. I predict the weather…. Kid: That doesn’t seem so super. Weatherman: There’s more. I predict the weather, because I can control the weather! Kid: Control the weather? Weatherman: Sure, would you like to see a demonstration of how it works? Kid: Yeah! Weatherman: Okay here we go… (acts like TV weatherman pointing to background) Today we expect to see some rain and lightning coming in from the south, with windspeeds of 20 miles an hour. (normal voice) and then after I say that, the storms start coming in… (makes sound effects of wind blowing and lightning) whooooo whhooooo crash! Crash! Kid: So Weatherman can create the storm? Weatherman: Yes, or I could say (acts like TV weatherman pointing to background) It’s looking pretty stormy out there right now, folks, but the sun is about to clear everything out. (normal voice) and then the storm fades, away, and the sun shines, and birds start singing -‐ tweet tweet, tweet tweet Kid: That’s amazing! Weatherman: Thank you! Kid: Are you part of the Avengers, or the Justice League? Weatherman: Well, neither one. This hero is my own creation, I made my own comic books that I drew myself, and made the costume. Kid: Oh, I see. How did you get the idea? 9 Weatherman: Well, I was watching a storm one day, and it was so powerful, the dark clouds, and the wind. And I love superheroes. Kid: Don’t we all! Weatherman: Sure, and I thought – what an amazing power it would be to control the weather. Kid: That’s very creative of you, and a great costume, too. Weatherman: Thank you! It’s fun to pretend to be a hero. Kid: Can I ask you something? I know this is all pretend, but do you think there will ever be a real hero with super powers? Weatherman: Well, I don’t know about a comic book hero. But there was a real person with super powers. Kid: What? I think I would have heard about it! Weatherman: Well, it’s not quite what you may expect, but there was a person who could really control the weather like my hero the Weatherman. Kid: Really? A real hero? Weatherman: Yes, a man who commanded a storm to stop with just his voice, and it went away. Kid: What?? Just like you imagined. Weatherman: Yes, but this is a true story about a real person who lived long ago. Want to hear it? Kid: I’d love to hear it. Wow, a real superhero, tell me more… Weatherman: Lets go sit down at the Super Snack area and I’ll tell you the story (they exit) 10 Day One Bible Story You know, it would be pretty neat to have super powers like being able to fly… or leap over a building in one jump, or lift an entire bus! But that is just pretend. I don’t have any special powers. But there is one who has all the power; more power than any super hero you know. And the most important thing in your life is for you to choose if you BELIEVE in this one or not. Every day we are going to tell you a story from this…the Bible. The Bible is God’s true words. The stories in here, the words in here, are true and real. This Bible is our map, our guide so we can be introduced to the ONE…the ONE with all the power….the ONE God wants us to BELIEVE in. It is Jesus the Super One. There is a verse in this Bible that says God wrote these words to help us believe in Jesus. Let me read the verse to you. John 20:31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. It is important in life to know what and who you BELIEVE. All the choices you make in life come from what you believe. She believes that chair will not break, so she sat in that chair. You believed that we would show up to do your club today, so you chose to come over to this house. Later today I bet you will believe that our hostess is giving you a safe and non poisonous snack to eat and you will choose to eat it. Some things in life are easy to believe and some things are hard to believe. Do you believe these facts? 1. A cat has 32 muscles in each ear. 2. A cockroach can live several weeks with its head cut off. 3. A cow produces 200 times more gas a day than a human. 4. A dragonfly only lives for one day. 5. A giraffe can clean his own ears with his tongue – 21 inches long! 6. A goldfish m emory is only 3 seconds. 7. A man named Charles Osborne had the hiccups for 6 years straight! 8. A sneeze travels out of your mouth at over 100 mph. 9. Dolphins sleep with one eye open. 10. There are m ore chickens in the world than people in the world. Raise your hand if you believe these things. You just made a choice….a choice to believe. I believe them too. I choose to believe these are true. See we all make choices to believe things every day. In the Bible story today, there is a man named Peter. He too meets someone that he has to choose to believe….or not. Peter has a new friend, named Jesus. Jesus wants Peter to believe that Jesus is powerful, Jesus is God’s Son, Jesus is God. Jesus wants Peter to believe that Jesus is the Super One (chant). Let’s see how Jesus shows his super power. I need your help for this story. Whenever I say “boat” say “heave ho” and pretend you’re pulling hard on the oars. Whenever I say “disciples” the boys count to 12 really fast. Whenever I say “wind” the girls cup their hands around their mouths and blow like the wind. Whenever I say “waves” say “splash” and crash your hands together in front like cymbals. Whenever I say “Jesus the Super One” – Hold one hand up in the are with fist closed like “superman” flying and say “To the Rescue!”. [This part of the story is read from a script] 11 Peter, James, John, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James, Simon, Judas, and Judas Iscariot are 12 friends of Jesus. They are called his disciples. One day Pete , James, John…well all the disciples were exhausted. All day crowds and crowds of people had been following Jesus the Super One. They were listening and watching as he healed the sick. The sun was beginning to set over the Sea of Galilee. Seeing how tired his disciples were, Jesus the Super One said, “Let’s get in a boat and go to the other side of the lake.” The disciples rowed the boat away from the shore while Jesus the Super One went to the back of the boat and lay down to sleep on a cushion. The waves lapped gently against the side of the boat, lulling Jesus the Super One into a peaceful sleep. But suddenly a wind began to blow dark clouds across the sky. The waves weren’t so gentle anymore. The little boat began to pitch and rock. The disciples began to get a little worried. But Jesus the Super One still lay sleeping in the back of the boat. Then the wind grew stronger still. The spray from the waves got the disciples all wet. This was getting to be a bad storm! But Jesus the Super One still lay sleeping in the back of the boat. By the time the boat reached the center of the lake, the wind had turned into an angry gale that whipped the waves so high they washed right over the boat. The disciples were terrified! They thought they might sink and drown! But Jesus the Super One still lay fast asleep in the back of the boat. Finally, someone went and shook Jesus the Super One. “Master,” they cried, “don’t you care if we drown?” Jesus the Super One looked around. He listened to the howling wind. He felt the cold, stinging spray as the waves crashed over the little boat. He saw the fear in the disciples faces. Then Jesus the Super One stood up. He stretched out his arms to the wind and the waves and commanded: “Peace! Be still!” All at once the wind stopped. The waves became calm. Then he asked the disciples: “Why are you so afraid?” Why don’t you believe?” Jesus the Super One showed his power over the wind and the waves that day on the Sea of Galilee. He cared for the disciples and wanted them to believe that he will always be with them, and he has the power to always take care of them. They just need to believe. Very good. Thank you for helping me with that story. Jesus showed in this story that he is powerful. He is real. He is not pretend like Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman. The same Jesus that was with Peter and all the disciples in the boat is the same Jesus that is alive and living in heaven today! Jesus wants you to believe in him and be your friend. He wants to show you his power and take care of you every day. But first you must believe in him. You must say iChoose to believe in Jesus. Just like our memory verse says Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, …but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. Let’s Pray. Transition You did a great job listening. I can’t wait to find out what happens tomorrow and see if we get to meet some more Super Heros! We saw how God is so powerful that He can just talk to the ocean and the waves obey Him! And God can help us when we’re afraid. Jesus’ disciples learned about His power when they were in boats during a big storm. Jesus made the storm stop. We’re going to play a game called Boat Tag where you are in boats just like the disciples were. Explain the game: 12 Day One Game #3 Boat Tag Ask a volunteer to be “it.” Form three groups from remaining students. Each group stands in a separate boat marked on the ground. One at a time call out such descriptions as “kids wearing red” or “kids in second grade.” Students who fit each description run to new boats while “it” tries to tag them before they are inside their new boats. Any student who is tagged becomes “it” also. Continue play, periodically calling out “Boats are sinking!” at which all students must run to new boats. When only a few students have not been tagged, begin a new round of the game with a new “it.” Option: If you have a large group, choose more than one student to be “it.” Color they are wearing. Own a dog/cat/fish/snake/lizard. Eye color. Only child in family. Love peanut butter. Allergic to peanut butter. Been in a boat before. Swam in the ocean before. Has a toy super hero at home. Has a cape at home. Transition Rain 1. The group sits in a circle. 2. The leader starts by rubbing their hands together. The person to the right does the same, then the person to their right, and so on until everyone is doing the action. 3. When all are rubbing their hands, the leader starts a new sound. 4. Sounds—finger snapping (or tap one finger, then two fingers, then three fingers; hand clapping; slapping thighs; foot stomping.) 5. To end the storm, reverse the actions. 6. At the end, the group, one by one stops rubbing hands and sits and waits for the action to be completed by the group. When I hear the Bible story about how Jesus calmed the big storm, it makes me think about how mighty and powerful Jesus is. It also makes me think about how loving and accepting He is. Jesus protected and rescued Peter, and Jesus wants to protect and rescue us, too. Jesus wants to be your Super One! 13 Day One Gospel The Umbrella Message Objects needed: Umbrella, wordless book, gospel bracelets When I hear the Bible story about how Jesus calmed the big storm, it makes me think about how mighty and powerful Jesus is. It also makes me think about how loving and accepting He is. Jesus protected and rescued Peter, and Jesus wants to protect and rescue us, too. Jesus wants to be our Super One! See my umbrella here. (Walk a few steps holding an open umbrella over you.) What can an umbrella protect you from? (Rain, wind, sun) Yeah, an umbrella can protect you from that stuff, but an umbrella cannot protect you from the eyes of God. He sees you and everyone on Earth. He sees everything you do. Now that’s some serious, super powered vision! Superman’s x-‐ray vision doesn’t even come close. And you know what? God even knows what you think. We can’t hide anything from God. (Close umbrella and drop wordless book in to umbrella hopefully without the kids seeing.) Because God sees you wherever you are and knows what you think, He knows you have disobeyed His rules. (Raise umbrella, book falls out and you pick up the book) Oh wow! This book is actually one of my favorites! But you know what, it doesn’t have any words or pictures in it, but it still tells one of the best stories EVER. Would you like to know what that story is? Awesome! And hey… While I’m telling the story, I want everyone to take one of these pipe cleaners that my friends are going to pass out (other students pass out pipe cleaners)… we’re going to make something while I tell my story that you will be able to keep and wear that will help you remember the story I’m going to tell you! You ready? Let’s follow along together! The FIRST page is the GOLD PAGE! (Other student’s pass out gold beads to kids and instruct them to add to the pipe cleaner ) Gold reminds me of heaven. It reminds me of Heaven because God’s True Word, the Bible, tells me that the streets in Heaven are shiny and beautiful like gold. The Bible also tells me that perfect God lives in Heaven. Raise your hand if you think you know what else the Bible says about Heaven. (Allow children to guess a few, but circle back to these three) Jesus’ face—Jesus is God’s Son. He lives in Heaven right now and wants you to be with Him someday. Other people—We will see other people who had asked Jesus to be their Forgiver when they were alive. They live in Heaven right now – like my (grandmother/grandfather) who died. I will get to see them when I go to Heaven! NO bandaids or tears in heaven—No need for bandaids because the Bible tells us there is no sickness or hurting or dying or sadness in Heaven – the happiest place ever! 14 SPOTTED/DARK PAGE The next page in our story is a sad one. This SPOTTED/DARK PAGE reminds me of what is not allowed in Heaven. – SIN (Other student’s pass out dark beads to kids and instruct them to add to the pipe cleaner ) Sin is anything we THINK (point to head), SAY (point to mouth), or DO (hold out hands) that does not please God. (shake finger in a “no” motion).” Sin is any time we Think something mean about somebody Say something mean to somebody, or Do something mean or just plain DISOBEY What are some of the ways we disobey God? (Have children give examples, some could be disobeying parents, saying something mean to a friend, not sharing toys, being lazy, cheating, arguing with your brother or sister, being jealous, whining and complaining, etc.) God calls our disobedience sin. Well, everybody’s done that. In fact the Bible tells us that “ALL” have sinned – me, you, and every other person. We have all done wrong things. We all have dark sin in our hearts. The Bible tells us that SIN cannot be in Heaven around perfect God. That’s a problem! But, never fear. Help is on the way! Jesus the Super One wants to save us from our SIN by giving us an AMAZING gift! Let me explain. Who likes to get presents? Me, too! Well, you know, Jesus has a gift to give you, and it is even better than a trip to Disney World. Jesus wants to give you the BEST gift EVER! But.. we just learned that sin can’t be in Heaven with our perfect God, and we ALL have sinned. But you know what? God made a way for our sins to be forgiven so we can go to Heaven. That brings me to my RED PAGE. RED PAGE This page reminds me of what Jesus did for you and me. (Other student’s pass out red beads to kids and instruct them to add to the pipe cleaner ) The Bible tells us that “This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.” 15 That means that God loved us so much that He gave us the GIFT of sending His only Son, Jesus, down from Heaven to die by being nailed to the cross, and His RED BLOOD paid for our sins. -‐ Baby—God sent his one and only Son, Jesus, to Earth to be born as a baby. He lived here like you and me but He never did anything wrong – He was Perfect! -‐ Crosses—When Jesus was grown up, people killed Him on the cross. Jesus could have stopped them, but He let them, because He knew He was the only one who could take the punishment for all our sins. -‐ Empty tomb—But Jesus is not like us. He did not stay dead. He came back alive on the 3rd day, and now lives in Heaven with God!! That shows us the truth that Jesus is God’s Son from Heaven. So, Jesus wants us to “live through Him.” He wants to wash our sins away—wash our sin-‐dirty hearts clean. He wants to forgive us and give us eternal life so that we can “live through Him” forever in Heaven. Jesus came so that we would have a way for the sin to be washed off our hearts so that when God looks at those hearts, He sees CLEAN. CLEAN PAGE (Other student’s pass out white beads to kids and instruct them to add to the pipe cleaner ) The Bible tells us some more about getting a CLEAN HEART: Gift—Jesus wants to give us the free gift of a clean heart so that we can live forever in Heaven. ABC’s—All we have to know is God’s ABC’s: Admit—that you have sinned or done wrong things Believe-‐-‐that Jesus is God’s Son, and that He died on a cross to be your Forgiver and wash your sins away Choose—to ask Jesus to be your Forgiver When you choose to ask Jesus to be your Forgiver, God promises you THREE GIFTS: 1. A Clean Heart—He will forgive all your sins and make your heart clean forever. 2. Close friends—with God and Jesus NOW 3. A Home in Heaven—where you and all of His friends can go to live with Him someday. Would you like to ask Jesus to be your Forgiver and to wash your sins away? You can do that RIGHT NOW. It’s so easy. If you will close your eyes with me, I’ll tell you what I SAID. (Pray an authentic short prayer which includes:) I ADMIT I have sinned, and I know I can’t be friends with You/go to Heaven with sin. I BELIEVE that You, Jesus, are God’s Son, and that You died to pay for all of my sins. I CHOOSE You, Jesus. Please forgive all my sins and wash my heart clean. Amen! Ever since then I have been friends with Jesus. That’s how you can become Jesus’ friend, too. 16 When you become friends with Jesus, He wants you to get to know Him better. He wants your friendship to GROW. Growing reminds me of my GREEN PAGE. GREEN PAGE: (Other student’s pass out green beads to kids and instruct them to add to the pipe cleaner ) What grows? (allow the kids to give some answers) You’re right! This green page reminds me of things like grass, and trees and those things grow! Jesus wants our friendship with him to grow. Some ways that we can do that are by: Prayer Talking to God and Jesus every day Church Going to church Bible Reading and obeying the Bible Children Telling others about Jesus so they can CHOOSE Jesus Invitation: (UMBRELLA) When you receive God’s GIFT of eternal life, Jesus comes to live in you by His Holy Spirit. You belong to God forever. (Raise umbrella over head.) God’s love is like an umbrella that is over you all the time. He will protect you and guide you through rainy, stormy days and sunny days. Not only will Jesus protect and guide you, but most importantly He will RESCUE you from your sin. Jesus the Super One will FORGIVE you, and all you have to do is ask. You can ask Jesus to clean your heart TODAY! It’s SO EASY, but you have to CHOOSE to do it. If you never asked Jesus to wash your heart clean before, I’d really like to talk to you! I’ll be waiting over by that tree to talk to anyone who wants Jesus to be their SUPERONE. Everyone who does not need to go to the tree can help me remember what all these colors mean. (Have children now wrap the pipe cleaner around their wrist and student’s can help them secure them into a bracelet form. Children can keep the gospel bracelets as a reminder of today’s lesson) Day One Gospel Review Game Sink or Swim Divide the kids into two teams. Start with the first person on team one. Ask a true/false question. If they get it wrong they must "sink" (sit down.) If they get it right they may "sink" a person on the opposing team (the one sunk just sits down) OR save a person on their own team. When you get to a person who is sunk, they must answer the question correctly to save themselves. All those left standing at the end of the game receive a marker dot. Good choices make all the difference, so I CHOOSE to: BELIEVE, FORGIVE, OBEY, FOLLOW! (Alternate version is to divide them into groups like it was done at the end of Day 1.) Superheroes in Training, it’s Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na—Game Time! (Sing the na nas like the Batman theme song.) Day Two Theme Game Take it Back Materials: cotton balls Divide players into two equal teams. Seat the teams in two separate areas, facing one another. Give each team a bag of cotton balls. Tell teams their goal is to give all their cotton balls to the other team without leaving their team’s area. Transition No matter how hard we tried, it was impossible to get rid of all the cotton balls! They always came back. In our Bible story today, I want you to pay close attention to what Peter couldn’t get rid of by himself, and what he couldn’t take back. But first… I think we have a special Super Hero who is looking for something. Day Two Skit Captain Righteous: Attention all men, women, boys, and girls. Are you a superhero? Or do you know a superhero? I’m Captain Righteous, and I’m looking for some heroes to join my superhero team: The Agents of Good. I’ll be taking resume’s and interviews in Central Park today. (looks at clipboard making notes) Switcher: (walks up) Oh, hi, hi! Captain Righteous? Captain Righteous: Why, yes, that’s me! (heroic pose with big smile) Switcher: Is this where I do my tryout for the superhero team? Captain Righteous: You want to join the Agents of Good? Switcher: Yes, yes, I’m ready ready ready! Captain Righteous: Okay, well, you’ve got a costume all right…what is your Hero Name? The Switcher: The Switcher! (does hero/karate move) 25 Captain Righteous: The Switcher? (writes on clip board) That seems like an odd name, what’s your superpower? Switcher: My power is to switch teams at a moment’s notice. I can be bad, I can be good, you can’t ever tell! Captain Righteous: (starts to write on clipboard) Switching teams….(looks up) What? I don’t understand… Switcher: Okay, let’s say I’m in a fight where there’s 2 good guys and 3 bad guys, and I come in as a good guy. (positions body like fighting a pretend team) Captain Righteous: Yes, to fight the bad guys. Switcher: Sure, sure. But since there’s 2 of us, we might get beat right, so I switch sides (jumps to other side) and then fight with the bad guys, which will definitely win now. Captain Righteous: So, you’re going to help the bad guys? Switcher: Well I might that time. But then I stay with that group for a while, and then we are come up against a bigger team of good guys. Then my superpower kicks in and BOOM! (jumps to other side again) I’m switching sides again. Now I’m with the good guys! Captain Righteous: Let me get this straight: You want to join my team? Switcher: I really really want to. Captain Righteous: Even though you might leave my team whenever you want to and fight against me. Switcher: Only if you’re losing! Only then. Captain Righteous: And your so-‐called superpower is to switch teams from good guys to bad guys? Switcher: At a moment’s notice! I’m quick. Watch me. I’m here (jumps to other side) I’m over here. Watch again (jumps again) now I’m back. Completely unpredictable! You can’t beat me, you don’t know where I’m coming from. Captain Righteous: Ok ok hold it. You don’t have a power, you have a problem. Switcher: What? What problem? Captain Righteous: Don’t you see that it’s wrong to jump back and forth like that. How can you be good, how can you be an Agent of Good, if you keep switching to bad? Switcher: Well, I didn’t really think about that. Captain Righteous: Agents of Good should be good. All the time. I don’t think you’re ready for the team. Next! 26 Switcher: Wait, wait. You know – you’re right. I don’t know why I didn’t see it, but you’re right. It was wrong for me to keep going back and forth, doing good and bad. That’s bad. Captain Righteous: So, how do you feel? Switcher: I’m really sorry. I mean, now that I think about it, people got hurt and people got sad when I did what was wrong. I’m really sorry. Captain Righteous: Well, as an Agent of Good, Captain Righteous will forgive you. Switcher: Really? Captain Righteous: Yes. I can tell you are sorry and want to change and make a difference. I even have an idea for a new super hero name. Switcher: That sounds like a good idea. What is it? Captain Righteous: (Slaps the exclamation logo over the question mark) Captain Reliable – you can always be counted on Switcher: Oh! I like that much much better. Captain Righteous: I think there may be room on the Agents of Good after all. Switcher: Thanks for forgiving me. Captain Righteous: Let’s talk more about that. I want to start by telling you a true story that will help you learn even more about REAL forgiveness from the greatest hero that ever lived… Exit Day Two Bible Story Wow.. I wouldn’t want to live life as the “Switcher.” You know, bad choices, sinful choices can capture us, trap us, keep us from being able to follow Jesus. I’ve done this before. I’ve made bad choices that have hurt other people and have hurt myself. We all have. What can we do to get out of this trap? The Bible says in I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he if faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. This means we have to say we are sorry and then ask for forgiveness. Remember Peter the disciple of Jesus? Last week Peter was in the boat with all the disciples and Jesus the Super One (chant) when Jesus showed his power to calm the wind and the waves. After seeing that miracle and then seeing more miracles Peter really believed that Jesus is the Super One (chant). Peter told Jesus that he would love him forever, stay with him forever, even die for him! But one day later, Peter made a bad choice. And then he needed to ask forgiveness. 27 As I tell this story I want you to listen if Peter is making good choices or bad choices. Show me a thumb’s up sign. Now show me a thumb’s down sign. Whenever you hear a good choice that Peter made everyone show me a thumb’s up sign. And if you hear a bad choice that Peter made everyone show me a thumb’s down sign. Ready? One night Jesus and all the disciples were eating dinner together. Jesus knew that it was almost the day for him to be arrested, convicted of crimes, and hung on a cross to be crucified to death. Jesus was telling his disciples that this was about to happen. When Peter heard this sad news, Peter told Jesus – I love you so much Jesus that I will go with you to prison if I have to. I will even go to death with you! I am willing to stick with you forever and even die with you! Thumbs up or down? (thumbs up) After Peter said this, Jesus told Peter that actually the opposite of that would happen. Jesus told Peter that this very same day Peter would deny that he even knew Jesus. Peter thought that was crazy! Peter loved Jesus! He would never leave him or betray him. But Jesus said he would deny him three times and as soon as he did, a rooster would crow. Later that night soldiers came and arrested Jesus and took Jesus away. The soldiers took Jesus into the house of the high priest. Peter followed, but he didn’t stick close to Jesus. He stayed a distance behind out of the way in the courtyard. It was a cold night and there was a campfire. Officers and slaves were gathered around the fire. Peter also stood there to keep warm while Jesus and the soldiers were on the other side of the courtyard. While he was warming himself, a slave girl asked him, “Aren’t you one of Jesus’ disciples?” Peter could have told the truth, but he did not. Instead, Peter said, “No, I am not.” Peter had denied knowing Jesus! Thumbs up or down? (thumbs down) Another person asked if he had walked with Jesus, if he were one of Jesus’ disciples. Again, Peter answered, “No, I’m not.” That is the second time Peter denied knowing Jesus. Thumbs up or down? (thumbs down) Then a third one asked Peter, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with Jesus?” All Peter did was lie again saying, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t know anyone named Jesus!” Thumbs up or down? (thumbs down) Then Peter heard a sound; “Cock-‐a-‐doodle-‐doo!” As soon as Peter lied the third time, as soon as Peter denied knowing Jesus three times, the rooster had crowed, just as Jesus said it would happen. Also at that same moment, the Bible says that Jesus turned and looked straight at Peter. Their eyes met. How awful! Earlier that same night, Peter had said he was ready to fight and even die for Jesus. And now, he wouldn’t even speak up and say he knew Jesus! The Bible says that Peter went outside and wept bitterly. The next time Peter saw Jesus was when Jesus was hanging on the cross to die. Very sad. 28 The next time Peter saw Jesus after that was when Jesus came alive again! And Peter was able to have Jesus forgive him. Thumbs up or down? (thumbs up) Sometimes we say we believe and we make good choices. But sometimes we say we believe and make bad choices. When we make bad sinful choices we need to choose to ask for forgiveness. Jesus is very quick to forgive us every time we ask for forgiveness. iChoose to believe and iChoose to ask for forgiveness. And remember that our memory verse says Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, …but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. Let’s Pray. Day Two Game #3 Dead Cow, Sleeping Cow, Live Cow This game is similar to Red Light, Green Light in that players must listen to the caller to get directions right. There is no limit to the number of players. One person will be at the front of the group calling out the positions. This game is played on your hands and knees. There are 3 positions: Live Cow -‐ Up on your hands and knees...sort of like a cow on all fours. Sleeping Cow -‐ Laying on your side like you are sleeping. Dead Cow -‐ On your back with your hands and feet in the air. (Kind of like a cow who has kicked the bucket.) All players start in "Live Cow" position. From there, the caller says other positions. (i.e. "Live Cow" -‐ "Dead Cow" "Sleeping Cow." So on and so forth.) The player in the group who is the last to get in position or any player who goes to the wrong position is out. The game can move very fast especially towards the end with fewer "cows". The last "cow" remaining gets to be the caller for the next round. Transition Hands Up No, it's not a hold up. Kids follow your instructions like, "Hands Up!", put your hands on your head and then the students put their hands on their head. Then go to: "Hand's on your . . . . .nose . . . .elbows. . . .toes. . . ." until you get their attention. Sometimes go really fast, sometimes slow, and mix it up too! Day Two Gospel TEA BAG GOSPEL God loves you and me. God wants to be close friends with us forever, here on Earth, and then forever in 29 Heaven someday. GOD IS PERFECT AND HOLY: God is perfect and holy. He never makes mistakes. He cannot do wrong. And when God made man He made man perfect too. But, then sin entered the world... and each one of us now has sin in our lives. (hold up tea bag and show the “sin” inside) Let’s use this tea bag to represent you and me. This is us. We are not perfect. We wish we were. We try to be. But we’re not. And that is a problem. The Bible says that God is perfect and holy. It takes just ONE WRONG thing to break that close friendship. Sin is anything you think, say or do that makes God unhappy. We do lots of wrong things: disobeying or telling parents “no”; being mean; telling lies; or just thinking ugly thoughts. Can you think of something you have ever done that did not please God? Don’t think about what someone else has done. Think about wrong things you’ve done. We are all separated from Perfect God by our sin. The Bible says that in our sin we are separated from God forever. We are separated from him while we are alive, and then we are separated from him when we die. GOOD THINGS CAN’T GET US BACK TO GOD: Some people think that they can get connected to God by doing good things. People try to do good things like: Giving money to poor people. Being nice to your friends. Going to church . Hmm. Going to church is great, but not even just going to church can fix this. Do you see this tag? This string and tag are like the world and the devil. As long as we have this tag attached to us, he can trick us and pull us around and make us do things that make God unhappy. The Bible tells us that THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO TO FIX THIS BY OURSELVES! We have to STOP trying to break free on our own. We can’t do it. Oh No! How can WE ever get away and get close to God again?? We can’t. GOD MADE A WAY SO WE CAN BE CONNECTED TO HIM: God fixed it! (pull out scissors) God doesn’t want us to be pulled around by the devil and separated from Him forever. So, God made ONE WAY for us to get to Him. (Snip tag off of tea bag) The Bible tells us about this way in John 3:16 For God SO loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever BELIEVES in Him, shall not perish, but have eternal LIFE. God sent Jesus down to be the ONE WAY, for us to break free of the hold the evil things of this world has on us get to Him. God loves us so much, that He had Jesus die on a cross to take our punishment! Jesus loves you that much....to die for you. Jesus came back alive again because He has power over death!! Now all the punishment for sin is paid! Now we can live with God forever! WE JUST HAVE TO BELIEVE: 30 If you believe, all you have to do is choose Jesus. Not only will he free us from the hold that the evil in this world has on us, but he will clean up all that dirty sin that is in our hearts as well. (use scissors and cut the top of the tea bag off. Then open it up to expose the loose tea leaves and empty it on to a blank piece of paper) The Bible tells us that he will clean our hearts (show empty tea bag now) and not only that, but He says that he will remove our sins from us as far as the east is from the west. (throw tea leaves over your shoulder or blow off of the paper) They are NO MORE. (show white paper and empty tea bag) PERSONALIZE IT: When I was ____ years old, I asked Jesus to remove my sins from me. I told Jesus I knew I had done wrongs things. I knew I couldn’t fix things by trying to be good. I told Jesus I believed he was the only way to get back to God. If you will close your eyes, I’ll tell you exactly what I said. (Pray an authentic, SHORT prayer which includes:) I ADMIT I have sinned, and I know I can’t be your close friend with sin I BELIEVE You, Jesus, are the only way. I BELIEVE you died to take the punishment for my sin I CHOOSE You, Jesus. Please forgive my sins; Wash my heart clean and be my forever friend. That’s it! Amen! Ever since then I have been friends with God and Jesus every day. INVITE THEM: It’s just that easy. If you want to ask Jesus to set you free from your sins and clean your heart like I did, you just need to ask Jesus. You can do this RIGHT NOW! I’ll be waiting over by that tree to talk to anyone who wants to tell Jesus I BELIEVE. Day Two Gospel Review Game Materials: 2 rolls of Toilet Paper It’s a Wrap Divide the kids into 2 teams (3-‐4 teams if you have a lot of kids). Have 2 kids from each team come up front. One child will be the wrapper and the student will be the wrappee. Give each team a roll of toilet paper. Ask a review question. Whichever team answers the question correctly -‐ their upfront wrapper gets to walk around the wrappee 5 times with the toilet paper. Continue to ask questions and wrap. At the end of the question time the team whose person is the most covered with toilet paper wins! Multiple Choice Gospel Review Questions 1. Jesus will wash my sins away if I a. We know that no matter what we do, no matter how much we mess up, God is always willing to forgive us when we ask Him. He loves us SO much that there isn’t anything we could do that he wouldn’t forgive. Your challenge today is: Read the following scenarios with your mom or dad and share an example of how you could show COMPASSION in that particular situation. Is the situation easy or hard to FORGIVE? Your brother calls you a name. Your best friend chooses someone else to be on his team. Your neighbor breaks your favorite toy. Your older brother is playing Wii and won’t let you watch your favorite TV show. Your mom is late to pick you up…again! Your sister eats the last cupcake. Your dad is late to your ballgame and misses seeing you score. THANK God for loving and FORGIVING you. Show God how grateful you are by showing others COMPASSION. We learned how Jesus shows COMPASSION to us by FORGIVING us of our sin. Practice the super power of forgiveness by making the wise CHOICE to forgive others like God forgave you, and show COMPASSION, even when it’s hard. Remember, come back tomorrow and share the memory verse and/or give me an example of how you can show COMPASSION, and I will have a marker dot to give you! Don’t forget to bring a friend! 33 MEMORY VERSE Who remembers our memory verse? Say it with me. So you can move around when people close their eyes? Escape: Yep, that’s it. I’m working on it. It’s not as cool as flash bang, I know. Flashbang: Well, Flash Bang isn’t working out so good. I’m thinking of hanging up the tights for good. Escape: What’s going on? Flashbang: I just can’t control my power. Everytime I get in a challenging situation. Flash! Bang! Blinding lights shine from me, and Explosive Booms go off. No one can see or hear anything. Escape: Yeah, and the bad guys go down Flashbang: Yeah, but it get’s everyone. My friends, my team mates. When the Flash Bang goes off, everyone around me gets hurt. It happens when I get sad, when I get mad… Escape: Hmm I never thought about that. Flashbang: Yeah, nobody wants to be on my team anymore. I’m out of control! 39 Escape: I think I may be able to help. Have you heard of something called Self-‐Control? Flashbang: Well, I tried just trying harder, I still lose control and FLASH! BANG! Escape: Well, I’m a Christian, and as a person who follows Jesus, I learned that Self Control isn’t just trying harder, it’s getting help from Jesus. Flashbang: Jesus helps with control? Escape: Sure. His followers know that if we choose to obey him, and choose to follow the right path, he helps us get more control over ourself. So we can change bad choices to good choices. Flashbang: And out of control… Escape: ….to under control. Flashbang: I need that. I really need this Self Control So Jesus had followers who kept calm when things got challenging? Escape: Yes, I have a story to tell you from the Bible. It’s one of my favorite stories, because it’s about an… ESCAPE! Flashbang: Let’s hear it! Day Three Bible Story You know, sometimes in life, unexpected things happen… kinda like Escape hiding behind Flashbang… But in life, we choose to ask forgiveness, we choose to obey and still bad and scary things can happen to us. But Jesus the Super One (chant) knows that you are choosing to obey and he will rescue you. I’d like to tell you a story about Peter in the Bible again. In this story Peter has a choice to make. Today he wants to obey Jesus instead of denying Jesus like he did in yesterday’s story. But in this story it will take lots of self-‐control to choose to obey. We are going to see how Peter said iChoose to obey. The last time we heard about Peter he had just denied that he even knew Jesus. It was a sad day. After that, Jesus died on the cross and was buried. Another sad day. Jesus was buried for 3 days. Three very very sad days. Then Jesus came alive again on Sunday, the first Easter Sunday. There was an angel there that day too. It was a real angel. Peter finally got to see Jesus again. Peter loved Jesus. Jesus loved Peter and forgave him for his bad choice of denying Jesus. And from that day on, Peter did the opposite of denying Jesus. Peter told everyone about Jesus the Super One (chant). Everywhere he went….have you heard about Jesus the Super One(chant)? Have you heard about Jesus the Super One(chant)? Have you over here heard about Jesus the Super One(chant)? Let me tell you about him! Lots of people said iChoose to believe, iChoose to ask for forgiveness, iChoose to obey Jesus the Super One (chant). 40 But there was one person who was very angry. King Herod. He did not believe that Jesus was the Super One (chant). He did not believe Jesus was alive. He did not believe. And he hated everyone who did believe. King Herod would find people who believed and throw them in jail! He even captured one of the disciples named James and he had him put to death with a sword! Oh no! What is Peter going to do?!? He believes Jesus is the Super One (chant)! He wants everyone to believe! He is telling everyone he can find. What if King Herod finds him? Will he put him in jail? Will he kill him? What should Peter do? Should he keep quiet? Go and hide? What choice will Peter make? Peter says iChoose to obey and keep telling people about Jesus the Super One (chant). What happens? King Herod captures Peter and throws him jail. King Herod assigns 16 guards to guard Peter in the jail. Wow! 16 guards! Peter is actually chained to the guards. One guard is chained on either side of him in the jail cell. And the rest of the guards were standing guard. King Herod did not want Peter to escape. But nothing is impossible for Jesus the Super One! He sends an angel to rescue Peter while Peter is sleeping. Let me read this to you from the Bible. Acts 12:6b-‐11a. Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” h e said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists. Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. Peter followed him out of the prison, but h e had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him. Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord h as sent his angel and rescued me.” In this story we saw that even though Peter chose to do the right thing, bad things happened to him. It can be hard for you and me to obey when someone like King Herod, or a pirate, or the bully at school is threatening us. Let’s pray and ask Jesus the Super One (chant) to help us say iChoose to obey and to say Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, …but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. Let’s Pray. Day Three Game #3 Choose from list Transition Repentance Run Have kids line up at one end of the yard while you stand at the other end. Say, “On ‘go’ walk toward me. When I yell ‘repent,’ turn around and walk the other way. Again, when I yell ‘repent,’ turn around and walk the other way. Ready? Go.” Play for just for a minute or two. Then gather everyone together and ask, “What did you have to do when I yelled ‘repent’?” Kids say, “Turn around and go the other way.” 41 That’s right. Repent means to turn around and go the other way. We can CHOOSE to do the right thing, too, because Jesus the Super One gives us his superpower of self-‐ control when we have faith in Him. Choosing to have faith in Jesus is the most important thing you’ll do in your life. Day Three Gospel CHAIN GOSPEL Select a volunteer to come help (to volunteer) Are you strong? I mean REALY strong? Do you think you could break a chain? Well we might try, but most people can’t do that! Of course not... we can’t break chains... I want to show you something. I’m going to pretend that this paper chain is a real chain ok? Have you ever heard of the 10 Commandments? These are rules that God gave His people the Israelites a long time ago. They are things like: Thou shall not kill, Thou shall not steal, thou shall not lie. It’s all written in the book of Exodus. Those were the rules that God gave in the Old Testament at the beginning of the Bible. (to child) So, have you ever killed someone? Oh... that’s good. But.. I want to read you something (open Bible to Matthew 6:21-‐22a) People were a little confused and so Jesus explained it a little more (read the passage) Well it says right there that if you’ve been angry with someone that you are to be judged too... uh oh. So have you ever been angry? Yep... ok so I’m going to put this chain on you right here. (drape first part of the chain on the child) OK so let’s look at some more. Have you ever told a lie? Yep... ok so here’s some more chains. Have you ever disobeyed your mom and dad? (add more chains as the child admits to each one of the sins asked about) What about when mom and dad asks you do to something, but you have a bad attitude... ever done that? Or maybe your friend has a new toy and you want it for yourself so you might take it without asking... Wow... that’s a lot of sins you’ve got piled up on you. Hmm... Lets take a look at Romans 5 – (read Romans 5:6) “You see, at just the right time when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly...” Umm... I’ve got a question for you (to the child) Remember that these represent real chains.. if you were tied up with real chains like this, would you feel a bit powerless? Yeah... I would too.. But let’s look at what it says in verse 8 – “But God demonstrates his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” So what that means... is each one of those sins (take the chains off the child one at a time as you are 42 explaining this part and place them on yourself) that you committed... no matter how many you have on you. Christ died for you. He took those chains, and put them on himself. Each lie, each act of disobedience, each bad attitude... Jesus put them on himself when He gave His life and died on the cross for you. Now, we’ve already said that you and I are by no means strong enough to break a chain... but JESUS... when he put those chains on himself, He had done nothing wrong, but he still paid the price... his life for all of us. But then, the most amazing thing happened (after all the chains are on you, break them dramatically as you illustrate Christ dying and then raising from the dead). HE was strong enough to break the chains! He defeated death because he didn’t stay dead!!! He came back to life and broke those sin chains that he had taken on himself! (dismiss and thank the child for participating) You see kids, It doesn’t matter how many sin chains you’ve got on you... God still loves you. He still chooses you to receive His gift of eternal life with Him through Jesus. Jesus’ gift paid for EVERYONE... even those who may have done a lot of things to make God unhappy. I asked Jesus to set me free when I was ____ years old and you can do it too. I’m going to pray here in a few seconds and if you’ve never asked Jesus to take away your chains and forgive you for your sins and come and live in your heart as your forever friend, then this is your chance. It’s just that easy. IF YOU WANT TO ASK JESUS TO TAKE YOUR CHAINS AND SET YOU FREE, like I did, you just need to ask Jesus. You can do this RIGHT NOW! I’ll be waiting over by that tree to talk to anyone who wants to tell Jesus I BELIEVE. Transition to Gospel Review Game Ok kids! It’s time for another Gospel review adventure! Come test your squirt gun skills as you try to spray your favorite student (insert review game leader’s name). All you need do is answer a gospel review question correctly, and you’ll get a chance to become the greatest super blaster out there! 43 Day Three Gospel Review Game Pirate Bay Shootin’ Arcade (Like “musical” hot potato) Materials: Life Preserver Squirt Gun Pirate attire Umbrella Instructions: This first part of this game is played like musical hot potato. Have one student sing a song and while they are singing, have the children pass a squirt gun to the person on their right. When the music stops, whoever is holding the squirt gun gets to answer a review question. If they answer correctly, the child will get three chances to squirt the student (the second, arcade portion of the game). The student will stand in a designated area and walk back and forth similar to a duck in a shooting gallery game. The child will stand several feet away from the student. Instruct the child that he can only start shooting when the music starts. After shooting the squirt gun 3-‐5 times, the child returns to the circle, and the musical hot potato time begins again. (repeat the game at least 8-‐10 times) Day Three Gospel Review Questions 1. I can break chains all by myself. (F) 2. Sin is anything you think, say, or do that does not please God. (T) 3. God has given us His Spirit to warn us away from some things we might want to do. He urges us toward things we should do and helps give us power to have SELF-‐CONTROL and to make wise CHOICES. Read 2 Timothy 1:7 and list 2 things God’s Spirit doesn’t give us, and the 3 things He does give us. _____________ _____________ _____________ _____________ _____________ ASK God to give you the super power of self-‐control. With His help you can CHOOSE to do what you should do and not what you want to do. Bring back your challenge card tomorrow with your answers filled in the blanks, and I will give you THREE marker dots for you! Don’t forget to bring a friend! Another challenge option: Practice keeping your COOL and show SELF-‐CONTROL when you play the following game with friends or family. If you CHOOSE to OBEY the rules of the game, even though it might get really hard, you will have the super POWER of SELF-‐CONTROL! The Great Staredown! Choose a partner. When you say go, each partner will attempt to stare the other one down. Whoever makes a noise or laughs first loses. A third person can get involved. They can try to sabotage the players by making funny faces or noises at them while they’re trying to “keep their cool.” If you have a big group of people play, you could make the game one big contest by having winners in each pair move on to the next round until you declare an overall winner. 45 Day Three iChoose Yell (Do the yell just like you did at the end of Day One.) This is it! This is our last club time together, but you know our week together isn’t over! Remember you can come find us at Summer Fest! It’s going to be a BLAST! (Describe Summer Fest to the kids. Tell them your favorite part.) I really hope you can come! Now before we play our game, did anyone do their challenge last night? (Give dots.) Did anyone bring a friend? (Give one dot per friend.) I’ll check to see if you memorized your memory verse a little later. Right now, it’s Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na—Game Time! (Sing the na nas like the Batman theme song.) Day Four Theme Game Ultimate Rock Paper Scissors -‐ Superman, Villain, Kryptonite Split into 2 teams, designate 2 safety zones, one on each team’s side, and designate a middle area. Each team then gets in a huddle and picks what they want to be as a team, superman, a villain, or kryptonite. Superman: right arm extended up toward the sky, left arm close to body with hand in a fist. Villain: sinisterly wiggle fingers of both hands together in front of you; raise an eyebrow. Kryptonite: pound fists together. Once the teams have decided their character they want to be, they come up to the center spot and line up face to face, then on a count of 3, everyone does whatever action their team picked. Superman beats the villain, the villain beats kryptonite and kryptonite beats Superman. The team that beats the winning team chases the other and tries to tag as many members on the other team as 49 possible before they reach the safety zone. The members from the team that get tagged become a part of the other team. Repeat until all players are on one side. Transition In that game we just played, Kyrptonite beats Superman, but I want to ask you, does anything beat Jesus the Super One? No! He’s more powerful than everyone! Superheroes in comic books and movies have unique abilities. Some of them can fly, disappear, and save people. I want to see what unique abilities you all have. Who Can? See how many in the group can… Roll their tongue (85% of people can). Wiggle their ears; wiggle their nose. Show they are double jointed. Touch their ear with their elbow (I don’t think anyone can!). Whistle (can they whistle by blowing both in and out?). Twiddle thumbs (try to do it in both directions at same time!). Rub their stomach and pat head at same time. Make owl hoots with clasped hands. Make a “popping sound with hand tapping their puckered large “O” shaped mouth. You guys can do some really amazing things. You can all be superheroes, too! Not because you’re the coolest or strongest or fastest or smartest. Not because you can fly or walk through walls or leap tall buildings with a single bound. You can be a superhero by trusting God and following Him. Let’s see what super hero’s we’re going to meet toay! 50 Day Four Skit (quickster is soaking wet, Hydro is walking and helping hold Quickster up, then releases) Quickster: Thanks for the help, Hydro! Hydro: No problem, Quickster! Quickster: I mean it, you really saved me out there, Hydro. Hydro: Well, I was underwater anyway, checking out for evil under the lake. When I saw you splash, it looked like you needed help. Quickster: I did I really did. Hydro: So what were you doing? Quickster: Well, as the Quickster, you know I have super special speed, right? Hydro: Yes, you are super fast! Quickster: Well I saw this other super speed guy on TV. He was so fast, he could run on top of the water. Hydro: Oh, I think I saw that too. Quickster: So I thought I’d give it a try. So I got to the end of the dock … started running as fast as I can. I hit the water and… Hydro: Splash? Quickster: Splash! And sink. Yeah, I was wondering about that, why didn’t you just swim? I mean you weren’t that far out from shore. Quickster: I can’t do that. I don’t know how. Hydro: You don’t know how to swim? Quickster: Look not all of us were born in the underwater kingdom of Aqualoo Hydro: True, true. But I can teach you how to swim. Quickster: Really? Hydro: Sure. You just have to paddle with your arms like this…. (demonstrates) 51 Quickster: Like this? (does swimming motion) Hydro: That’s it! And then just kick your legs back and forth to get more power Quickster: (lays on ground and swims with arms and legs) Like this? Hydro: That’s it. Now let’s go in the water. Quickster: No way, I’ll sink. Hydro: We’ll start in shallow water. OK? Quickster: But water can’t hold me up. I’ll sink. I’m actually pretty scared of the water, since I can’t just run across it. Hydro: Look, this will take some trust. You have to trust that I’m showing you the right way to swim, right? Quickster: I guess so. Hydro: And also, you can trust me that I won’t let you sink. If something goes wrong, I’ll help you, ok? Quickster: Ok. I trust the swim. I trust you. I trust the swim, I trust you. (lies on ground and tries to swim) Hydro: Okay, now just keep paddling and kicking, and come my way. Quickster: I’m scared… but I’m trying… and I’m trying and…. I’m swimming! I’m swimming Hydro: Great job! That showed a lot of courage to face your fear Quickster: You were right, it took some trust. I’d like to keep learning how to swim better, if you can keep showing me? Hydro: Sure sure. Let’s do a lesson every Saturday. Quickster: I’m glad I have a good teacher I can trust. Hydro: Well thanks, but ultimately there is someone you can trust way more than me. I can help you in the water, but there’s a real hero who can help you everywhere you go. You can trust him and he can save you from anything. Quickster: That sounds amazing! Hydro: I just remembered, he was also able to walk on water. Just walking, no tricks! Quickster: I’d like to hear that more… but maybe let’s go somewhere dry so I can dry off while I listen… (start to walk off) 52 Quickster: Hey, I just realized, why aren’t you wet? You live underwater. Hydro: My suit’s waterproof, of course. Quickster: (walking off together) Can I get one of those? I’m going to need it… Day Four Bible Story This week has been great. I’ve learned a lot. Just like the Peter in the Bible. Peter saw Jesus the Super One (chant) do amazing miracles. Peter knew this Jesus was the ONE he wanted to follow. He said iChoose to follow Jesus the Super One (chant). In this story Jesus taught Peter an important lesson about how to follow Jesus. If you want to follow Jesus you have to keep your eyes on Him and only Him and follow Him every day. And just like all the other stories we have told, once again Jesus the Super One (chant) rescued Peter. Peter had seen Jesus the Super One (chant) show amazing power and do amazing miracles. Peter had seen Jesus heal a blind man, a lame man, heal sick people, cast demons out, raise a dead girl to life, and now on this day Peter watches as Jesus takes 2 fish and some pieces of bread and turned that into enough food to feed 5000 people! Jesus really is Jesus the Super One (chant). After everyone had eaten, Jesus told Peter and the disciples to get into their boat and sail to the other side of the sea. Here we go again; getting in the boat again. Remember on Monday when they were in the boat during the storm? Jesus showed His power then; how will He show His power in this story? The disciples are sailing in the boat. Jesus went up on the side of the mountain all by himself to pray. The Sea of Galilee is big, so it will take all night for them to sail across to the other side. Meanwhile, Jesus is still back on the mountain by himself praying. Finally at 3 o’clock in the morning Jesus is done praying and goes to join the disciples in the boat. But the boat is out in the middle of the sea! That’s no problem for Jesus the Super One (chant)! Jesus just starts walking right on top of the water. Remember it is 3 o’clock in the morning and it is dark. The Bible says the wind and the waves were beating against the boat. Some of the disciples were probably still sleeping and some were sailing the boat. When all of a sudden they see something! Somebody is walking on the water!! Is it a ghost!?! They cried out in fear. Everyone give me a cry of fear! Ahhhhhh! And shout, “It’s a ghost!” But Jesus immediately said to them; “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Then Peter said, “Lord if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” Jesus said. So Peter got out of the boat and started WALKING ON THE WATER TOWARDS JESUS!! 53 Wow! Because Peter believed that Jesus the Super One (chant) he even said iChoose to follow Jesus out onto the water. Amazing things can happen when we say iChoose to follow Jesus. But then Peter turned his head and started looking at the deep dark water, the wind, and the big waves. Peter was afraid and suddenly he started to sink! Peter cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. Jesus the Super One (chant) rescued Peter! As long as Peter kept his eyes looking at Jesus, he walked on the water. But when he took his eyes off Jesus, he began to sink. What was he looking at when he took his eyes off Jesus? Wind. Waves. Deep Dark Water. Scary Stuff. Did Jesus let him sink? No, Jesus the Super One (chant) rescued Peter. Let’s try something. Everyone stand up. Put blinders around your eyes like this, cup your hands around the sides of our eyes. Everyone look right at me. Don’t turn your head or look anywhere else. Look only at me. Walk in place pretending you are walking on top of the water. Very good. Keep looking only at me. Now take off your blinders and look all around you at the other people and the ground. Begin to sink low, low, lower. Oh no! We’re sinking! Quick, put your blinders back on and look up here at me! Now get tall again and walk on the water! Great! Blinders off again….sink. Blinders on….walk tall! Repeat for emphasis. Have a seat. After Jesus the Super One (chant) rescued Peter, they both climbed into the boat and immediately the wind and the waves stopped. It was quiet. Every disciple in the boat knew at that moment the Jesus the Super One (chant). Jesus is God. The Bible says they worshiped Jesus and said, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Everyone repeat that. Truly you are the Son of God. Say it louder. Truly you are the Son of God. Even louder. Truly you are the Son of God. Good job. They sailed to shore and all the disciples followed Jesus to the next town where Jesus did even more miracles, because Jesus is the Super One (chant). Peter chose to follow Jesus. He saw how powerful he is and wanted to follow him every day. It took courage to walk on that water. Sometimes it takes courage to follow. Peter chose to follow Jesus and spent the rest of his life telling other people that they should follow him too! Peter wanted every person to know and see the real Jesus the Super One. Peter lived out our memory verse …. Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, …but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. Let’s Pray. Day Four Game #3 FOLLOW the Guide Choose one person to be the guide, and have the other kids follow that person and to do what they do. Walk the way they walk, make the same motions, say the same things, etc. (tour guide, robot, superhero, swimming, walking on water, sinking) FOLLOW the Leader Extreme Similar to the classic game "Follow the Leader" but a bit more challenging. 54 The leader will strike a pose that the rest of the class must follow. The challenge is to see which player can remain frozen in that pose the longest. If a player moves once he or she has been frozen, that person is out of the game. The player that holds the pose the longest becomes the next leader. Examples of some challenging poses: Strongman, Superman, Stomach Ache Strongman Superman Stomach Ache Transition Hopping Challenge This can be played in a circle, a line, or as a "Robot or Superhero Says____" game. Give children a variety of "hopping" commands such as: Hop in one place. Hop and turn in a circle at the same time. Hop on left/right foot. Hop backwards, sideways; make a square or circle. Hop over a line. Hop with a partner. Hop quietly to a place to sit down. Day Four Gospel PAPER AIRPLANE GOSPEL (Prepare paper airplane before hand using airplane gospel template) Do you like paper airplanes? I sure do! I love making them and seeing how far I can throw them... You know, it makes me think about how a lot of people try to get to heaven. How high can we go in an airplane? (take suggestions) That’s really high! But it’s not to heaven. We could look at it this way too. Let’s pretend that over there (pick a spot a good distance away) is where God is. We might try lots of different things to get to God. We try doing good things... (throw the plane) nope.. We try giving things to people (throw the plane ) nope... (give several additional examples and throw the plane every time, missing the mark) 55 Well that didn’t work. Let’s try this... (now rip the wings off the plane as shown in the template and open up from the flap revealing the shape of the rocket) A rocket ship can go a lot higher than a plane! But can we use a rocket to get to Heaven? Nope... it’s still not good enough. See, the problem that we have is called SIN. The word sin literally means -‐ “To Miss The Mark” That means to miss the shot, miss the target, close but not perfect. The ONLY thing that can be in heaven is perfection. But we can never be perfect. We miss the mark. Sin means we are not perfect. The Bible says that even if we have done some good things, ALL of us have done some wrong things, too. Those wrong things are called sin. WE ALL HAVE MISSED THE MARK – WE ALL HAVE SINNED!! And SIN is the one thing God CANNOT allow in His home, HEAVEN. That’s sad news But there is good news! Because God loves you so much, He made a way for your SIN to get WASHED AWAY. God sent His one and only Son, Jesus, into the world from Heaven. Jesus is perfect. (begin unfolding rocket) Perfect Jesus died on the cross to pay the punishment for all my sin and your sin. But, Jesus did not STAY dead. To prove that Jesus has all of God’s power, Jesus came back alive. Jesus has all the power we need—complete power over our sin. And now, Jesus wants to make a way for you. Greater than any airplane or rocket, the power of HIS life, death and resurrection is the perfection we need to get to Heaven. All you have to do is believe. If you believe that Jesus can provide a way for you, then just ask him. Ask Him to take your sin and to make your heart clean. When you believe and ask, God forgives you and welcomes you as one of HIS children. Our hearts become clean; and now we get eternal LIFE, living forever with God and Jesus in Heaven someday. You can ask Jesus today: Admit—that you have sinned or done wrong things Believe—that Jesus Christ died on a cross for your sin Choose—to ask Jesus to clean your heart and be your forever friend Model Prayer: When I was ___ years old, I CHOSE JESUS. I prayed and asked Jesus to forgive my sin and wash my heart clean. If you will close your eyes, I’ll tell you exactly what I said. (Pray a short, authentic prayer that includes:) I ADMIT that I have sinned, and I know I can’t be friends with You/go to Heaven with sin. I BELIEVE that You, Jesus, are God’s Son, and that You died to take the punishment for my sin. I CHOOSE You, Jesus. Please forgive all my sins and make me clean. Amen! Ever since then, I have been friends with God and Jesus. Invitation: Isn’t that easy? 56 If YOU want to follow Jesus and accept the way that He has made for you RIGHT NOW, like I did, you just need to ask Jesus. He wants to bring you with Him, but you need to make the CHOICE to ask Him. You can CHOOSE to do that today. If you’ve never asked Jesus clean your heart before, I’d like to talk to you about it. I’ll be waiting over by that tree to talk to anyone who wants to ask Jesus to wash their heart clean. Transition to Gospel Review Game Ok, Superheroes in Training, it’s time once more to test your Gospel knowledge! We are going to play a game called “Captain, May I.” It’s a lot like “Mother May I.” Let me explain. Day Four Gospel Review Game Captain May I? 1. Children line up sitting side by side. The caller stands at a distance from the lined up players. 2. He calls on each player in turn and asks the player a review question. If answered correctly that player may take a number of assigned steps toward him, and then sit back down. 3. The steps allowed are: baby steps, giant steps, and scissor steps (like forward jumping jacks), or crab crawl. You could even have the kids take steps pretending to walk on water like Peter did. Then, have them sit down (sink). 4. The kids who reach you receive a marker dot. Alternate version: 1. Have the children line up along one side of the yard, sitting side by side. The leader stands about 8 feet in front of them. Have one kid answer the question. Everyone who agrees with the answer raises their right hand. If they disagree, they keep their hands down. 2. Everyone who guesses correctly takes one baby-‐step (or motion of your choice) towards the line (one foot directly in front of the other). Everyone who guesses wrong takes one baby-‐step backwards. Everyone sits back down after they perform the motion. 3. When the children reach the leader, they receive a marker dot. Review Game Questions: What book do we read to learn about God? (The Bible) What did He give? (His only son, Jesus) What do we do that separates us from God? (We sin.) What is sin? (Sin is anything we think, say, or do that does not please God.) Name an example of sin. (lie, think ugly thoughts, cheat, disobey) 57 What did Jesus do for us? (He died on the cross so that our sins wouldn’t separate us from God. He took the punishment for our sins—the things that we do that are wrong.) What is the first thing we need to do once we know what Jesus did for us? (We believe.) When we ask Jesus to be our Lord and Savior, what happens? (We receive eternity in heaven with God.) What is God’s greatest power? Hint: (He loves.) (If you need more questions, you can use Gospel review questions from the previous days.) Day Four Optional Game Day Four Snack Day Four Optional Game Day Four Review/Challenge Materials: Super Challenge Card Review (Each student reviews the week.) (Student 1) We learned a lot this week about Jesus the Super One and how we can have his superpowers of CONFIDENCE, COMPASSION, SELF-‐CONTROL, and COURAGE. Say those with me: CONFIDENCE, COMPASSION, SELF-‐CONTROL, and COURAGE. When we trust in Jesus and CHOOSE to follow Him, super, amazing things can happen! Let’s go over some amazing things that we learned this week. Today we learned about the superhero trait of COURAGE. It took great COURAGE for Peter to step out of the boat and follow Jesus. When Peter took his eyes off Jesus, he found himself in trouble, sinkin’ in the water. When he called out to Jesus, he was rescued. I know that Jesus will rescue me, too. I BELIEVE! (Student 2) Peter BELIEVED. When Peter and his friends were out in the boat, the wind wooshed and blew, the storm raged, Peter feared for his life. Jesus rebuked the wind and the waves, and the stormed stopped. Jesus is POWERFUL. He is the Son of God. Because of who Jesus is, I can have the superpower of CONFIDENCE. 58 (Student 3) When Jesus forgave Peter after he had denied him THREE times, I saw how powerful it is to FORGIVE. I know that I can CHOOSE to go to Jesus and ask for His forgiveness. He will show COMPASSION and forgive me, just like He did for Peter. And, I am definitely glad He took away my yucky sin spots! (Student 4) Oh, then there was Peter’s miraculous escape from prison. He was really able to keep his cool and have SELF-‐CONTROL during a very scary time. Peter OBEYED Jesus even when it was hard. I can CHOOSE to obey Jesus and FOLLOW His path, even when it is hard because I know that I can trust him NO MATTER WHAT. Today’s challenge is to: Think about the best news you’ve ever gotten … You couldn’t WAIT to tell someone, right? For each of the awesome things below, who would you run to tell first? You find out you get to go to Disney World. The first person you tell is: __________ You get an A on the test you studied super hard for. You can’t wait to show: __________ You hit your first homerun in your baseball game. You excitedly call: _____________ When good things happen to you, you can’t wait to share it with others, right? God has done some really cool things in your life. Most importantly, He sent Jesus to die for you so you could live with Him forever. Who in your life do you want to share this exciting news with? Share what you learned about the ultimate superhero, JESUS THE SUPER ONE!!!! THANK God for giving you opportunities to share about the hope that comes from Him. THANK God for the promise of Heaven! We know God is the ultimate superhero who RESCUES us from our sin! God wants EVERYONE to know that! He wants us to tell EVERYONE we know that Jesus came to save us because He loves us so much. God wants others to CHOOSE Jesus, too! Before we go we have our iChoose Chant: Day Four iChoose Yell We had a SUPER time learning about Jesus the Super One and learning about how to be a superhero. The person to the right does the same, then the person to their right, and so on until everyone is doing the action. When all are rubbing their hands, the leader starts a new sound. Sounds—finger snapping (or tap one finger, then two fingers, then three fingers; hand clapping; slapping thighs; foot stomping.) To end the storm, reverse the actions. At the end, the group, one by one stops rubbing hands and sits and waits for the action to be completed by the group. HANDS UP No, it's not a hold up. Kids follow your instructions like, "Hands Up!", put your hands on your head and then the students put their hands on their head. Then go to: "Hand's on your . . . . .nose . . . .elbows. . . .toes. . . ." until you get their attention. Sometimes we go really fast, sometimes slow, and we mix it up too! CAN YOU OBEY? I’m going to have you all laugh but when I put my hand in the air, I want you to stop laughing and get ready to hear what I say next. I want to see who will obey and stop. Okay, ready? LAUGH. (Allow that to go on for about 5 seconds and then put your hand in the air.) Many of you obeyed and stopped right away, but some didn’t. I want to see if you can obey. Let’s try again. LAUGH. You can play this game a few times replacing “laugh” with “grumble” or “whisper.” 61 ATTENTION GETTER Throw a ball into the air. A little rock makes him weak. (Superman) His partner is a bird. (Batman) You might think he’s jealous. (Hulk) Crooks end up in a sticky situation. (Spiderman) If the person is tagged then they are to freeze in a superhero position. Have the kids say “Jesus, the Super One,” while crawling through the tagged person’s legs to unfreeze and rescue. BOAT TAG Ask a volunteer to be “it.” Form three groups from remaining students. Been to Universal Studios/Disney SHIP SHORE (similar to “North South Central”) Materials: none There is one person that is the Captain. “Row your boat”—groups of three get together in a line and squat. They must act like they are rowing a boat while they sing “Row Row Row Your Boat”. “Eat at the table”—groups of four get together and pretend to eat at a table. “Man overboard”—everyone gets on the ground and pretends to be swimming. “Crow’s nest”—Three kids get together with their backs towards each other and lock arms. “Octopus”—kids lay on their backs with their arms and feet waving in the air. 65 TAKE IT BACK Materials: cotton balls Divide players into two equal teams. Seat the teams in two separate areas, facing one another. Give each team a bag of cotton balls. Tell teams their goal is to give all their cotton balls to the other team without leaving their team’s area. DEAD COW, SLEEPING COW, LIVE COW This game is similar to Red Light, Green Light in that players must listen to caller to get directions right. ULTIMATE ROCK PAPER SCISSORS Superman, Villain, Kryptonite Split group up into 2 teams, designate 2 safety zones, one on each team’s side, designate a middle area. Teams get in a huddle and pick what they want to be as a team, superman, a villain, or kryptonite. Superman: stance is the up, up, and away motion: right arm extended up toward the sky, left arm close to body with hand in a fist. The team that beats the winning team chases the other and tries to tag as many members on the other team as possible before they reach the safety zone. The members from the team that get tagged become a part of the other team. Repeat until all players are on one side. FOLLOW THE GUIDE Choose one person to be the guide, and have the other kids follow that person and to do what they do. Walk the way they walk, make the same motions, say the same things, etc. (tour guide, robot, superhero, swimming, walking on water, sinking) HUMAN KNOT Goal: Untangle the human knot and form a circle – everyone wins! Instructions: All players gather together into a mass and each player grabs the hands of two other people. Without letting go of hands, players try to untangle the knot by going under and over the hands of the other players in the knot. 66 FOLLOW THE LEADER EXTREME Similar to the classic game "Follow the Leader" but a bit more challenging. The leader will strike a pose that the rest of the class must follow. The challenge is to see which player can remain frozen in that pose the longest. If a player moves once he or she has been frozen, that person is out of the game. The player that holds the pose the longest becomes the next leader. Examples of some challenging poses: Letter T, Ballerina, The Bird, Strongman, Superman, Stomach Ache Letter T Ballerina The Bird Strongman Superman Stomach Ache CATTLE BRANDING Goal: To “brand” all cows of the opposite team Instructions: Explain what cattle branding is – ranchers have to identify their cattle by stamping a symbol on the “rear” of their cattle. That is the name of our game – “Cattle Branding.” Have clubbers stand in a circle. They are the “branders”. Have 3 people stand inside the circle, single file, with second and third person holding on to the waist in front of them. These 3 become the “cow”. The “branders” throw the soft ball at the “rear” of the cow while the “head” and the “middle” of the cow turn and try to protect the “rear”. The front person may use their hands to shield the ball, after all, cows do have horns. Student leader stays inside circle retrieving ball and passing it to clubbers that have not had a turn. Repeat with another team of 3 after the “cow” has been branded. DODGE BALL Goal: Be the last team to be hit with the ball & eliminate their team members from the game Instructions: Separate children into two evenly distributed teams. Line up teams parallel to each other with a line down the middle and balls in the middle. Yell “GO” and each team picks up a ball staying on their side of the line and throws the ball at the opposing team members. If you are hit with the ball, then you are out of the game. If the ball is caught in mid-‐air, then the person who threw it is out. 67 The last team with a team member on the field is the winner. DUCK DUCK GOOSE Play traditional Duck-‐Duck-‐Goose with this wet and wild variation: Instructions: The person walking around the circle carries a squirt gun He shoots each person one time, until he wants someone to chase him. Then he shoots that person a bunch of times. When someone has to go into the mush pot, he gets a bucket of water dumped on him. I SPY Goal: To find the object the leader is giving clues about. Instructions: Get everyone comfortable. Game leader identifies an article in the environment/gives clues about it one at a time. Clues can include: color, size, use, shape, location, etc. Players try to guess the object based on the clues. Winner: First person to correctly guess the object. LIMBO Materials: Rope (3-‐5 feet long) Instructions: Two student leaders hold the ends of the rope down on the ground. After each child has had a chance to go either over or under the rope, raise of lower it a few inches. Each child goes over or under the top in a designated way: Stepping, hopping, jumping, crawling, dot walking, crab walking, rolling, frog jump, etc. SIMON SAYS Goal: To obey everything Simon says Instructions: Game leader issues a series of instructions (stand on one foot, touch our ear…) If the instruction is preceded by the words “Simon says,” everyone should obey. If the instruction is not preceded by those words, players should not obey. Game leader spots those who have not done it correctly and has them sit down. KICKBALL SOCCER TAG (traditional, elbow, blob, freeze) MR. SHARK, MR. SHARK, ARE YOU AWAKE? Goal: To avoid being tagged by the shark(s) Instructions: Designate a starting line Choose a person to be the shark The shark lies down away from the starting line. 68 Place other players spread out along the starting line. Players begin to sneak up on the shark repeating “Mr. Shark, Mr. Shark, are you awake?” Begin speaking very softly and increase the volume each time you approach the shark. At any time, the shark “wakes up,” jumps up and tries to tag as many players as possible before they run back across the starting line. Players who have been tagged become sharks, too and play continues until all have been tagged. NORTH, SOUTH, CENTRAL Goal: To be the last one in the game Instructions: Designate one end of play area to be North, the middle to be Central and the other end to be South Game leader calls out one of the names and players run to that place Last one to arrive is eliminated from the game. If game leader calls the place the players already are, and the player leaves the area, he is eliminated. Play continues until all or most of players are eliminated. Winner: Last player(s) in the game PUT AND TAKE Goal: To finish the relay first Materials: Start and finish lines and a bandana for each team Instructions: Divide players into two teams and line them up relay style First player takes the bandana and runs to the finish line to put it down. Player runs back to team and tags second player, who retrieves bandana and hands it to third player. Third player returns bandana to finish line, etc. until all players have run. Winner: Team who finishes the relay first RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT Goal: Be the first play to cross the finish line by obeying the traffic signals Instructions: Game leader stands at the finish line. Players line up at the starting line. Game leader calls out either “Red Light” (while facing players) or “Green Light” (with his back turned to players). When players hear “Green Light,” they move toward the finish line. When players hear “Red Light,” they must freeze in place. Game leader may try to fool players by calling out things like “green light bulb.” If a player is seen, by the game leader, to move after “Red Light” has been called, he must return to the starting line. Winner: Player to cross the finish line first. He becomes the game leader for the next round. SHEPHERD CALL Goal: Be the team whose members all join the team leader first Materials: a bandana for each team Instructions: Divide players into two teams. Line up relay style with all players at one end of the field and a student leader at the other end. 69 First player on each team is blindfolded and turned around once. Student leaders call their players, while standing still on the finish line. Players follow voice of student leader until they touch the hands of their own leader. Remove the blindfold and quickly run it back to the next player. Players who have already run, sit down behind their teams. Winner: Team whose runners have all been first to finish the relay TEAM BROAD JUMP Goal: To be the team who collectively jumps the farthest Materials: start line and space to jump Instructions: Divide players into equal teams; try to get team sizes as close to one another as possible. Line teams up behind the starting line. First player does the longest standing broad jump he can, landing on both fee. Second player runs to where the first player landed; puts his feet where the first player’s feet landed. Second player jumps and each team member follows the pattern. Winner: Team whose players jumped the farthest collectively. STEAL THE BACON Goal: Steal the object between the two team lines and carry it back across your own team line before being tagged. Materials: Bacon, bandana, or small toy Instructions: Divide players into equal teams. Line the teams up parallel to each other and about 8-‐10 feet apart, facing one another. As you are facing each line, put the shortest person on the left and the next tallest person next to him. Give the shortest person on each line the number “1” and each taller player the next number. Place the bacon on the ground in the middle of the space between the two lines. Student leader calls out a number. The player on each team with that number runs to the bacon and tries to take it before the opposing team’s player can do so. The player with the bacon runs back to cross his team line. The player without the bacon attempts to tag the player with the bacon before he can cross his team line. If the player with the bacon cross3s the tem line, his team scores a point. If the player with the bacon is tagged, no point is scored for that round. Call a new number. Winner: Team with the most points after each number has been called at least one time. 70 iChoose: Jesus The Super One Water Day Games BUCKET FEET PASS Goal: To pass your team bucket from one end of the line to the other without spilling all the water Materials: one bucket of water for each team Instructions: l Place the bucket on the upraised feet of the first player on each team. l Players pass the bucket from person to person to the other end of the line. When the game starts, have the first member of each team put the sponge in the water, put it on their head, and run towards a jar at the other end of the playing area. Squeeze the water into the jar and run back. Continue on with the rest of the players. The first team to fill the jar to overflowing wins. WET SPONGE OVER AND UNDER RELAY Materials: Sponge Bucket Instructions: Form two teams. Each team makes a line. There is a bucket in front of the first player and a jar behind the last player. The first player fills the sponge and with two hands lifts it over his/her head to the next player. The next player takes the sponge and hands it back under their legs. Continue to hand it back over and under until you reach the last player, who squeezes it in the jar. Then he/she runs towards the front of the line to fill the sponge again and pass it. The first team to fill the jar to overflowing wins. WET SPONGE HOT POTATO Materials: Wet sponge Music Instructions: Everyone sits in a circle. Play music or sing a song. Pass the wet sponge around the circle. When the music has ended (just play a short segment) or the song is over, the person left with the wet sponge can squeeze it over their head. They can also choose to squeeze it over another child’s head. Refill the wet sponge and play again. WHAT TIME IS IT CAPTAIN (insert the name of leader of game) Description Captain _______ starts out at one end of a designated area with his back to the group. The group at the other end then yells out “What time is it Captain ______?” Captain ________ then calls out a time that is on the even hour (1 o'clock -‐ 12 o'clock). The group then takes that many steps. When the group gets to where the captain is, but not past him, and asks the time, the captain can yell "Midnight!" They then 73 turn and chase the group. Those that he catches are to sit out. The last one left becomes the captain. A variation is to allow each child who is tagged to become an honorary captain and help catch people. *Alternate version: same as Captain ________, but with a hose. The person who is "It" has the hose, with the help of a student. The campers say what time is it Captain ____ until they reach the captain. Then the captain says "spray time!" Whoever they soak is now it. NOTE -‐ the captain must spray below the waist because water in the face hurts. 74 iChoose: Jesus The Super One Songs JESUS IS THE SUPER ONE (to the tune of “We Will Rock You”) Jesus is a cool dude Comin’ to our rescue Savin’ us from sin and givin’ us life again He’s got love on His face Full of grace!
