WHEN IN DOUBT, CALL A SCOUT!
When an Eagle Scout accepts a project, you can be sure he will get the job done!
That was our experience with Matt Donoho, Troop 32, Fergus Falls. Matt walked
into our empty storage shed with an idea of what we needed to store the many donations of clothing, toiletries, and other necessities women need when they arrive,
and leave, our shelter. We approached several people with our need for shelving
and found the cost to be prohibitive. Then we learned of Matt. As soon as we met
him, Matt began brainstorming how he could make something useful, easily accessible, sturdy and spacious. He designed the shelving units, procured estimates
from local lumber yards, and even did fundraising for the materials with money left
over to purchase storage bins. The result was beyond our imagination. We invited
Matt back for a photo shoot after we had the shelves full- it only took a week or soand he was just as amazed at how quickly they had filled up. Matt has opened the
door for other Eagle Scout projects with us and we definately lookk forward to the
continued partnership. Thank you, Matt...we can’t express enough how much we
appreciate you!

DIRECTOR’S CORNER
A DREAM COME TRUE!
In November, 2008, the
Board of Directors for Someplace Safe purchased a new
shelter in the City of Fergus
Falls. The original shelter
along with administrative and
outreach offices were sold
to Lake Region Hospital. In
December, 2008, the board
hired Orb Management and
Studio e Architects of AlexanJeanne Jacobs, Executive Director
dria to work with Someplace
Safe on remodeling plans.
Changes to the new shelter were needed to allow for handicap accessibility and more bedrooms, so families no longer
had to share bedroom space with one another. The shelter is
licensed to house ten people. On June 29, 2009, the health
inspector gave the approval to move in, and ten women and
children moved in that day! The undertaking of a building
project is monumental to say the least. Juggling building
committee meetings, construction deadlines, inspections,
and fundraising, while managing a shelter full of women and
children, consumed the first half of the year. Getting settled
in and developing new procedures for operation has made
the summer fly by. Heartfelt thanks and appreciation go out
to many who helped make this 10-year dream come true
through donations of money, time, construction, and maintenance. A special thank you to our Board of Directors for
their vision, dedication, and many hours of volunteer labor.
With the agency focus on shelter remodel, Someplace Safe
outreach advocates are to be commended for increasing
their fundraising income over previous years. Donations are
up in some areas and holding steady in others. The Department of Public Safety, Office of Justice Programs, which
provides a majority of funding for Someplace Safe was able
to keep our funding stable for next year. For this we are
grateful. Grant funding took a downturn this year, and as a
result some organizational restructuring was needed. We
combined two full time manager positions in the 7th Judicial
District into one full time position. The other full time position has been delegated to fund development.
The kindness and generosity of our local communities is
what sustains us. The partnerships and assistance we
receive from law enforcement, court services, prosecutors,
and other service providers steady us in a time of instability.
Empathy, understanding, support, and encouragement on a
difficult day, or any day, keeps us motivated and energized.
THANK YOU…each and every one!
-Jeanne Jacobs-

1 IN 4 WOMEN
ARE VICTIMS OF
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
3
It’s here! The 5th Annual “It’s a Girl Thing” is Monday, November 9, 2009, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s
School gym in Breckenridge. All proceeds benefit Someplace
Safe. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for early bidders, a light supper
will be served at 6:00 p.m., games and drawings to be held
throughout the evening. All bidding will end by 8:00 p.m.
This evening will prominently feature handbags on the
silent auction, as often women have only what is in their
handbags when they flee their home to find safety from domestic violence. The designer handbags this year are wonderful.
Included again this year are many autographed items and so
much more.
Come on out, enjoy a festive evening in your community, be
part of domestic violence awareness, and support Someplace
Safe. Tickets are $20 and will go fast, so please get yours
early, as they may not be available at the door. We are still in
need of volunteers and table hostesses. Call Someplace Safe
for your tickets, more information, presentations, training, or
domestic violence services at 218.643.3109.
Holiday Extravaganza
The 8th Annual Christmas Extravaganza, a holiday craft and
gift show, will be held on Saturday, November 7, from 9 a.m. to
2 p.m. at the Starbuck School in Starbuck. This event is held in
conjunction with the Starbuck Open House. There will be Santa’s Workshop for children as well as a Hall of Light. Decorated
Christmas trees will light the halls of the Extravaganza and
will be given to families who have survided domestic violence.
Door prizes include: 50 lb. grill pack, valued at $150 from
Minnewaska Meats; 1 night stay at the Holiday Inn, Alexandria;
and two 4-pack tickets for Andes Tower Hills.
Candlelight Vigil
Please join us at the 22nd Annual Candlelight
Vigil and March in Fergus Falls as we remember
victims of domestic violence. The event begins
at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2009. We
meet at Pamida parking lot and march to the
Otter Tail County Courthouse. At 7:00 p.m. the
vigil will be held. The program includes music, a speaker, and a ceremony remembering
women and children who lost their lives due to
domestic violence. The Clothesline Project will
be displayed and the National Organization for
Women (NOW) will provide refreshments.
Earlier in the day, there is a Walk-A-Mile march where men
have the opportunity to show their support for victims of domestic violence. This begins at noon where the group meets at
Pamida parking lot and walks to Otter Tail County Courthouse.
Lunch is provided for participants. Please call 218.739.2853

Craig Haby Creates Mural for Kids
Where there was once a plan whtie wall, there are now
rolling green hills, engaging blue skies, and a castle
with proud waving flags. As part of his senior year art
project, Craig Haiby volunteered his time to paint a
remarkable mural for the Fergus Falls Parenting Time
Center.
Craig came to Parenting Time Center with a superb
attitude, a quick smile, and a genuine gift for art. The
mural was completed over the course of five months,
so the families of Parenting Time Center have had the
pleasure off seeing this work of art go from a sketch
on the wall to a colorful painting that allows your imagination to wander. Kids enjoy spending time where the
mural is located and play prince and princess.
Families have commented that the mural is “so
beautiful”, “extremely well done”, and as one child
stated, “Wow, I love it!” The staff of the Parenting Time
Center were impressed with Craig’s talent and grateful that he was willing to donate his time to paint the
beautiful mural. Craig Haiby plans to continue his gift
for art through higher education.
Anyone interested in seeing the mural is welcome
to call the Parenting Time Center at 218.739.3132 to
schedule a time to do so. We are not open to walk-ins
due to the confidential nature of our work.
Quality Time by Parenting Time Center
“He heads up to his bedroom and comes running back
with a quarter and four dimes and says mama how
much time will this buy me? Is it enough to take me
fishing? Or throw a football in the street? If I’m a little
short then, how much more does daddy need to spend
some time with me? These lyrics are from a song by
Jamie Johnson called “The Dollar.” This song is a great
example of the importance of spending quality time
with your child. The child in this song is not asking for
the newest toy, but simply more time with his father.
Here are activities that can be used to strengthen the
parent-child relationship as well as teach skills and
values that will benefit children long into the future
• Bath time: Collect items around the house and
see if they sink or float. Talk about why each item
sinks/floats.
• Bedtime: Read a bedtime story to your child. If
your child is able to read, you can take turns
reading.
• In the Car: Play 20 questions, find letters of the
alphabet on passing street signs, sing favorite
songs, or discuss your child’s day.
work on counting and one-to-one correspondence.
• Eat supper at the table as a family! This is a great
time to talk and communicate about your day.
• At the Store: Have your child help find the items
on your shopping list, have them count the
number of cans as you put them in your car, show
them the food label and ask them what it says or
what a certain letter is.
These ideas are just some of the ways in which you
can improve your time with your child. Even if you think
a game might be silly, chances are your child will love
it! Please make sure to find as much time as you can
to spend with each of your children separately to show
them how important they are and how much they are
loved!
#1 PREDICTOR OF
CHILD ABUSE IS
DOMESTIC ABUSE
• Meal Time: Have your child help make supper.
Let your child set the table- this is a great way to 5
OUTREACH OFFICE UPDATES
Otter Tail County
The Otter Tail County Outreach and Intervention office
has moved and is officially settled in. The new location is
106 S. Union, Fergus Falls. The phone number has not
changed: 218.739.2853.
The outreach office in Parkers Prairie is for sale. The
community can rest assured that the same advocacy
services are available in Parkers Prairie. The community
has been very generous in offering alternative places for
advocates to meet with victims. In addtion to advocacy,
Someplace Safe will still offer presentations to the schools,
businesses and community. Anyone who is interested in
scheduling presentations or is in need of services, please
call us toll free at 800.974.3359. We appreciate the support of the Parkers Prairie community and look forward to
continuing that partnership.
Douglas County
We are doing some exciting restructuring within Someplace Safe. My task when I was hired was to get the office
and the programs established in Douglas County. I have
been able to accomplish that with the help of a very capable staff and a most welcoming community. Recently the
board deciided that programs are running so smoothly that
a part time manager is sufficient.
Tina Gray-Siebers, the new manager, began her career at
Someplace Safe as an advocate in Douglas County and in
December accepted the position as the Otter Tail County
Outreach and Intervention Manager. She is now managing both Otter Tail and Douglas Counties. I have moved
into the fundraising department! How fun is that? I love to
raise money, I love to plan events and I love meeting new
people. My first charge in this new job is to put together a
business plan for a Someplace Safe thrift store, so store
up your goodies and be prepared to give generously of the
furniture, clothing, books, eetc. that you no longer need.
if you want to help volunteer or give to the store, let me
know. The goal for opening is February 2010 or perhaps
even sooner! -JoAnn Boorman-
Wilkin County
The Wilkin County office has moved! The new location is
115 N. 5th St., Suite C, Breckenridge, MN 56520. The
entrance is in the rear of the building across from the Bank
of the West.
EVERY 15 SECONDS A WOMAN

UP TO 50% OF ALL
HOMELESS WOMEN AND
CHILDREN ARE FLEEING
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.
Stevens County
Someplace Safe of Stevens County had the opportunity to work with their local 4th grade Girl Scout Troop
througout the summer on a number of projects. The
girls were very interested in our services and how they
could help women and children in our area. Some of
their projects included: helping with our Crazy Days
Bake Sale in July; collecting donations around town
and using the money to put together backpacks with
school supplies for families who needed them; holding a Pizza Hut fundraiser; and building and painting a
new brochure holder to display materials in our office.
They have been an incredible help to Someplace Safe
and the individuals we serve, and we are extremely
grateful for all their hard work!
Pope County
There have been quite a few changes in the office in Pope County. We have recently hired Gloria as
our new office support specialist. She comes to us
through Experience Works and is going to be in the
office 3 days a week. Welcome Gloria, we are excited
to have you on our team.
Diane Kittelson has accepted the position as
Shelter Manager at Someplace Safe Shelter in Fergus
Falls. “its kind of bitter sweet, I am really going to miss
it here in Pope County and all the fabulous volunteers
and community partners, but I am also extremely excited about this new adventure. Most of all, I am really
glad that I am staying within the organization and that
I can continue to work in the battered women’s movement- just with a new venue” says Diane.
Erin and Beth will both increase their hours to continue to provide full time advocacy services as well as
community and professional training and education in
the schools. They are also very excited.
