The award is presented at the discretion of the foundation chair to recognize extraordinary service to the organization. “Eddie, there are so many reasons for the Broadcasters’ Foundation to say thank you,” said Lombardo. “You have been a loyal director for the better part of two decades, going all the way back to when we were called the Broadcast Pioneers. In the past ten years you have been instrumental in the creation of the Broadcasters’ Foundation NAB Charity Golf Tournament and played a major role in helping us create this very breakfast and the Pioneer Awards which we celebrate today. I can think of no one more supportive of our mission. You truly believe in giving back, and I am sure that comes from your roots as a local broadcaster. The foundation and those whom we serve have been the beneficiary of your generosity and talent, and we are extremely grateful.” Eddie Fritts Previous Chairman’s Award recipients are James Delmonico, Norman Knight, Tony Malara, Ed McLaughlin, William O’Shaughnessy, and Ward Quaal. Six legendary broadcast figures were presented with Pioneer Awards in the Monet Ballroom at the Bellagio Hotel. Each honoree was toasted and roasted by breakfast emcee Tony Malara, president & CEO of Malara Broadcasting. Tony has hosted the award ceremony for the past six years. The breakfast is underwritten by the National Association of Media Brokers, the Radio Advertising Bureau and the Television Bureau of Advertising. The 2005 Broadcast Pioneer Award recipients were retired Metromedia president and the founder of WCVB-TV Boston Bob Bennett, former Susquehanna Radio President Art Carlson, Entercom founder Joe Field, Capitol Broadcasting President Jim Goodmon, ESPN Chairman Emeritus Herb Granath and retired Group W. Radio President Dick Harris. Each recipient received his award from Broadcasters’ Foundation Chair Phil Lombardo. The honorees are selected annually by the Broadcasters’ Foundation Board of Directors. A complete biography of each recipient appeared in the spring issue of On the Air and is available on the Broadcasters’ Foundation Web Site at broadcastersfoundation.org. 2 The incomparable emcee, Tony Malara At 10th Annual Pioneer’s Breakfast Pioneers Receive Awards Marjie Bennett and Ann Granath Phil Lombardo and Herb Granath Metromedia and WCVB pioneer Bob Bennett with Phil Lombardo Judy Kurianski and Jeff Smulyan Diane & Ned Powell. We are delighted with the number of radio and television broadcasting companies that have made an annual commitment to the mission of the foundation by becoming an Angel. The 2005 Angel corporate campaign is your company’s opportunity to join those already making an annual gift to help us insure that no call for help from a fellow broadcaster will go unanswered. The Angel Initiative is the way our industry can take care of its own people in their special time of need. It is all about “giving back.” The number of requests for help made to the foundation is increasing dramatically. We have no way of accurately predicting what the future demand on our resources will be. The Angel Annual Corporate Giving Initiative is an essential element in our being able to provide critical assistance into the future. We hope that we can count on you becoming an Angel in 2005. Contact Gordon Hastings at 203.862.8577 for further details. On behalf of all of those whom we serve, thank you for your support. THE 2005 ANGEL COMMITTEE David Barrett, President & CEO, Hearst Argyle Television Ed Christian, President, Saga Communications Alan Frank, President, Post Newsweek Stations Joe Reilly, President, New York State Broadcasters Peter Smyth, President & CEO, Greater Media NAB Golf Tournament Celebrates Its Tenth Anniversary Event Sets New Record The co-chairs, committee and players at the 2005 Broadcasters’ Foundation Charity Golf tournament have a lot to cheer about. The 10th anniversary tournament set a new record for the number players and money raised for the foundation’s mission of helping fellow broadcasters. Under the leadership of Clear Channel Television President Bill Moll and Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan, thirty-three foursomes challenged the Bali Hai Golf Club on Sunday, April 17th. Bill Moll said, “ Despite the record turnout the tournament played in less than five hours. After ten years we all must be becoming better golfers!” Tournament Executive Chair Scott Knight said,” Because of the sponsorship of Broadcasting & Cable and Deutsche Bank, 100% of the player fees went directly to support the foundation’s mission.” Co-Chair Jeff Smulyan added, “ By sponsoring the luncheon Media Services Group added greatly to our bottom line. Cumulus Media underwrote the costs of the on course beverage carts, and Spectrasite sponsored the custom Bali-Hai bag tags. Through the good offices of Art Brooks of the Arizona Broadcasters’ Association, PING donated a set of custom fitted irons for the tournament raffle which raised an incredible $3,400!” Each player received an official tournament duffel bag filled with gifts from tournament supporters. Stainless Tower provided golf towels, BMI supplied each player with sleeves of golf balls, and Warner Bros. gave each participant a DVD of the movie Tin Cup. The USO provided official USO 10 golf hats for everyone. Said USO President & CEO Ned Powell, “It is a small token of our appreciation for the tremendous public service support given the USO by radio and television broadcasters throughout the year.” A special prize of much sought after Maui sunglasses was given to the winners of the men’s and women’s closest to the pin competition by Doug Ferber of Star Media. The Mahlman Company sponsored the $100,000 Hole in One Competition. Sorry, no winners. Broadcasters’ Foundation President and Tournament Director Gordon Hastings announced at the tournament luncheon that the event raised $58,000 to help broadcasters who are in acute need. Said Hastings, “We have taken a quantum leap this year with our NAB Charity Golf Tournament. Many of you here can remember the humble beginnings of this tournament in 1996 at the old Las Vegas National Golf Club. In those early days, when the tournament was held on a Saturday we were happy to attract 50 participants! As I look around the room I see many loyal supporters. Bill Moll, John Shaker, Gary Chapman, Gary Fries, Ron Ruth, Eddie Fritts, Mark Barron, Art Brooks, Bob Hamilton, Paul Karpowicz, Shaun Sheehan, Ted Snider and Dennis Wharton have played in every tournament since the beginning. To these loyalists we owe a special thank you!” Broadcasters’ Foundation Chair Phil Lombardo saluted Eddie Fritts and Jack Knebel for providing this opportu- nity for the foundation during the annual NAB Convention. “ Eddie and Jack believe in the foundation’s mission and have given us this wonderful opportunity to make this event a signature for us at the NAB. Not only do we have the opportunity to raise a great deal of money to help others but it gives us the chance to introduce many new friends to what we are all about. What is most gratifying about this year’s record field of golfers is the many new faces here today. Not only do we have the leading broadcasters who golf with us, but we welcome many new friends from the technology and programming community who are joining us for the first time.” The 2006 Broadcasters’ Foundation Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Sunday, April 23rd, and will return to the Bali-Hai Golf Club. The fund’s exclusive purpose is to ensure that financial assistance be available in perpetuity to fellow broadcasters who, through no fault of their own, are in acute personal financial need. The endowment is used exclusively to support the benevolent outreach of the Broadcasters’ Foundation. To qualify for help, an individual must go through a detailed application process which includes a financial statement, income tax returns, reference checks, and a physician’s medical statement, when appropriate. Monthly grants vary in size depending on individual circumstances. All grants are approved and renewed annually by the Broadcasters’ Foundation Executive Committee. Grant recipients remain anonymous so as to preserve their dignity. Baby Grand Wins! Including “The One That Got Away!” When Skip Finley of ICBC Broadcast Holdings has an idea it quickly becomes a plan and the plan gets executed! That is exactly the sequence of events that brought about the Broadcasters’ Foundation Offshore Fishing Challenge (hopefully the first annual) which took place on April First embarking from Palm Beach’s world famous Sailfish Marina. The event coincided with the spring Radio Advertising Bureau Board of Directors Meeting. The tournament was underwritten in part by GE’s Global Media & Communications Division, which is under the leadership of Bob Stefanowski and based in Stamford, Connecticut. GE’s generosity and that of the individual boat sponsors and ICBC Broadcast Holdings allowed all of the entry fees to go directly to the Broadcasters’ Foundation mission of helping fellow broadcasters who are in acute financial need. Fourteen anglers on board four fishing boats were on hand for the event. Team winners were determined on the basis of most points (by type of fish), most eligible fish caught and the largest and most unusual fish. The following boats organized as teams sailed on 50’60’ sport fisherman over calm seas in bright sunlight at 8am and returned to the dock at noon with the days catch. 26 Snarlin Marlin, captain Jack Luce. Sponsor, Skip Finley. Anglers: Scott Knight and Meredith Smulian. The Natural, captain Tony Rizzo. Sponsor Gary Fries. Anglers: Pepe Sutton, Ron Ruth, and Dick Rakovan. Baby Grand captain Ernie Small. Sponsor: Michael Carter. Anglers: Mark Guild, and Al Vicente. Hard Drive, captain Dick Greiner. Sponsor Rick Buckley. Anglers: Joe Bilotta, George Pine, and Ed McLaughlin. Rick Buckley’s Hard Drive hit first at about 9am with a large Barracuda and RAB Chairman Joe Bilotta followed through on a 30 pound Amberjack. George Pine and Ed McLaughlin each boated aggressive Barracudas. Although Rick Buckley’s team actually caught the most fish (4, 3 Barracuda’s and an Amberjack) Hard Drive was out of the running because neither fish was eligible for prizes. Skip Finley’s Snarlin Marlin was third with one point for the most unusual fish thanks to Meredith Smulian’s catch of a Queen Triggerfish. Meredith is Vice President Associate Media Director of RJ Palmer. The Queen Triggerfish is one of the stars in the animated film Finding Nemo. Scott Knight contributed a bright Yellow Snapper and Skip brought in a good-sized Barracuda. Snarlin Marlin Captain Jack Luce formerly worked at WMEX in Boston and ironically at Rick Offshore Challenge Winners! Mike Carter, Al Vicente and Marc Guild aboard Captain Ernie Small’s Baby Grand. Buckley’s WIBG in Philadelphia. Gary Fries’ The Natural earned second place with 5 points for a small Dorado. Fries’ boat had the most excitement of the day when Pepe Sutton and Ron Ruth shared an hour-long fight with a 300 plus pound 10-foot Hammerhead Shark. The boat captains held a running account of the action over the VHF radios and Snarlin Marlin was close enough to see and envy the fight as it took place. At the end of the fight, although boat side, it was decided not to land the shark. Mike Carter’s Baby Grand won first place with eight points for two King Mackerels, one caught by Marc Guild and an over four footer caught by Al Vicente. Al’s fish was also the largest eligible fish brought back to shore. Commemorative trophies were awarded to each team member by RAB Executive VicePresident Ron Ruth during the RAB Board Meeting opening reception on the Ocean Lawn of The Breakers. Second Place: Inner City Broadcasting Chair Pepe Sutton, the RAB’s Dick Rakovan, RAB President & CEO Gary Fries and the RAB’s Ron Ruth Third place boat Snarlin Marlin. Skip Finley holding a Barracuda with teammates Scott Knight with a Yellow Snapper and Meredith Smulian who caught a Queen Triggerfish. JOHNNIE WALKER® BLACK LABEL® Blended Scotch Whisky, 40% Alc./Vol. (80 Proof), ©2004 Diageo North America, Inc., Stamford, CT Message From The President It is most appropriate that Eddie Fritts’ photograph graces the cover of this issue of On The Air, as the Broadcasters’ Foundation celebrates its tenth anniversary of a true partnership with the annual NAB Convention. The honor, created by the foundation board in 2000, recognizes extraordinary service and commitment to the foundation’s mission. Eddie is the embodiment of the ethos of the award. Eddie Fritts has been actively involved as a director of the Broadcasters’ Foundation and formerly the Broadcast Pioneers for almost two decades. During the past ten years in particular, he has worked diligently to bring the two organizations together in support of the Broadcasters’ Foundation mission of helping the less fortunate among us. Eddie Fritts is responsible for the establishment in the annual NAB Charity Golf Tournament in the foundation’s name, raising thousands of dollars for needy broadcasters over the past decade. Eddie, together with NAB Executive Vice-President Jack Knebel has nurtured the event to the point that this year the tournament broke all records. It is fitting, appropriate, and not surprising that this occurred during the final year of Eddie’s watch at the NAB. Now as Eddie prepares for the next stage of his career, having completed 23 years of outstanding leadership at the NAB, we have a special opportunity to thank him for his Broadcasters’ Foundation stewardship. It was a particular pleasure to witness our Chair Phil Lombardo present Eddie with the Broadcasters’ Foundation Chairman’s Award at this year’s Pioneers Breakfast at the Bellagio. It was also ten years ago that Eddie Fritts reached out to the foundation to rejuvenate the Broadcast Pioneers Breakfast. The event was moved from Thursday to Wednesday morning, allowing substantially more NAB attendees to be present. Eddie supported the creation of the Broadcast Pioneer Awards given at the breakfast as an important adjunct to the NAB agenda. Eddie has not only supported the foundation with ideas but he has made it a point, despite his incredibly busy schedule as NAB president, to personally attend each breakfast and golf tournament. Eddie has taken the podium and to personally congratulate the fifty-nine Pioneer Award recipients during the past ten years. The Broadcasters’ Foundation will miss Eddie’s leadership at the NAB but we will welcome his continued participation as a member of our board of directors. Eddie, I speak on behalf of all of us who believe in the Broadcasters’ Foundation mission of “giving back” by expressing our heartfelt gratitude for your friendship and support as an individual and as the President & CEO of the NAB. Every good wish to you, Martha Dale and the Fritts family. You will always be part of our family. Have a great summer! - GHH Lowry Mays is presented the NAB Distinguished Service Award at the NAB Opening breakfast on Monday, April 18th in Las Vegas. Shown with Lowry are NAB Joint Board Chairman Phil Lombardo and NAB President & CEO Eddie Fritts. In his typical fashion Lowry took the opportunity to direct the spotlight away from himself and praised Eddie Fritts' 23 years of leadership of the NAB. 31 Trump National Golf Club Briarcliff Manor, New York Monday, September 19, 2005 Tournament Co-Chairs Stu Olds and Peter Smyth Executive Chair Scott Knight Founding Chair Jerry Levy Executive Co-Chairs Tim McCarthy & Lew Leone For more information contact Gordon Hastings at (203) 862-8577 © Summer 2005 “On the Air” a FREE news and feature publication, offered to Broadcasters’ Foundation members and friends.
