I was struck by their individual stories, and most importantly, that their “season” here can be defined in large part as a time of learning and healing. Post Office Box 7200 Chestnut Mountain, GA 30502 t: 770.967.8500 · f: 770.967.3757 EagleRanch.org Our Mission Eagle Ranch provides a Christ-centered home for boys and girls in crisis and in need of hope and healing. Partnering with their families, we pursue family restoration and reunification. We seek to influence and equip others who share a similar calling to impact children, families and future generations. Two Eagle Ranch children won The Second Mile Award for going above and beyond expectations and persevering through challenges. Romello, 17, made a turnaround this year, working harder than ever in his home, at school and during extracurricular activities. Sarah, 13, made huge strides at school and became a role model in her home through humble and helpful leadership. “Winning this award was awesome, I didn’t think I’d come this far,” said Sarah. “I don’t even know the girl who walked through the door of the Glory Home on February 3, 2013. I’m a totally new person, and it feels really good.” The Triathlon Eagle Ranch Triathlon This May, a total of 36 Ranch children, 24 boys and 12 girls, participated in a community triathlon, hosted by Eagle Ranch and made possible through Tri-Kids Inc. For some boys and girls, training for the event was their first time swimming or riding a bike. The triathlon helped build confidence and allowed the children to experience success that can carry through in other areas of their lives. “The kids trained, competed, and finished. Some did better than they expected, some not as well. Either way, they followed through with something, start to finish.” Assistant Counselor Garrett Durham “The more you become honest, the healthier your relationships are. It makes me feel good that I can connect with other people.” Felicity, 12, The Praise Home Learning to Feel Again Felicity came to Eagle Ranch as a 5th grader trying to figure out life. Adopted, she felt like her parents didn’t understand her, so she treated them with disrespect. Her grades were far from her potential, and she had difficulty following through. “Whenever I was given a task, I would never finish it,” she said. “I would just make excuses.” Prone to follow the crowd or lie to impress friends, Felicity had trouble socially and began to shut her feelings out. “I used to not feel anything at all, so I had to work on starting to feel again,” she said. “I also had to learn how to tell others how I felt and to be honest about things.” During her time at the Ranch, Felicity learned to respect authority, complete tasks and significantly improved her grades. She began forming honest, connected relationships with her parents and friends, and expressed her feelings. She credits her transformation to learning about herself and forming a relationship with Christ. “I learned how to maintain healthy relationships with friends, authority figures and God.” “I’m just so glad she finally let her walls down and embraced everything that everyone was trying to give her,” said her mom, Tracey. “It made all the difference in the world, and I’m just very proud of her.” Healing Brokenness Travis, 17, The Love Home Travis’ parents divorced when he was just coming into his teen years. With shared custody and two working parents, Travis took advantage of going back and forth between parents and dodging discipline. His dad, Keith, notes that with a long work commute and short visits with Travis, he didn’t see the problems that were developing. “Travis just kind of fell through the cracks,” he said. Time at the Ranch allowed the family to come together and learn about setting boundaries and communicating better with Travis. “I learned how he feels and how to get him to do things around the house without fighting,” said his mom, Lisa. Finishing his junior year of high school, Travis recently won an essay contest and is interested in a career in journalism. “He really does amaze me,” said Keith. “I know he’s a great kid. Things just happened in his life at a crucial time that set him off in the wrong direction. I think Eagle Ranch really helped to turn him around.” “God can do anything. Through my houseparents and people at the school, God spoke to me and changed my perspective on a lot of things. He changed my heart.” God spoke to me and changed my perspective “My relationship with Christ is the biggest thing I’ve gotten from the program, and my relationships at the Ranch are some of the best I’ve had in my 17 years.” Romello, 17, The Joy Home Rebuilding Trust Jeremiah, 16, The Peace Home Jeremiah’s first meeting at Eagle Ranch was unforgettable. He arrived under the watchful eye of a Gwinnett County deputy. After serving a 30-day sentence at the youth detention center, he started the Ranch program. Much of Jeremiah’s time was spent learning how to deal with anger and rebuilding trust with his family. “His attitude improved tremendously,” said his father, Dieter. “He wants to do better and choose what’s right. We became a lot closer, and I was able to regain full trust in Jeremiah.” Setting New Priorities When Romello’s parents divorced, his mom, Adrienne, felt pressure to provide. While she worked to make ends meet, Romello found himself home alone or with his older sister, who tried to parent him. He started spending time with friends until the early morning hours or not coming home at all. Adrienne began to receive calls at work to tell her Romello was skipping school. “Our whole life structure was disorganized and dysfunctional,” she remembers. Romello began to apply his confidence to other areas of the program. He overcame his fear of swimming and completed the Eagle Ranch triathlon. “With encouragement from the crowd, he completed the entire swim portion,” said Eagle Ranch Assistant Counselor Garrett Durham. “The moment he stepped out of the pool there was a loud roar from the stands. Romello was proud of the task he accomplished, and I think this is going to be something he will always remember.” Eventually, Romello’s actions caught up with him, and Eagle Ranch was recommended to Adrienne through a parole officer. Angry when he first arrived, Romello didn’t go out of his way to succeed. “I was kind of lazy,” he recalled. Most importantly, Romello formed a relationship with Christ. “I didn’t know my son has a huge, giving, sentimental heart,” said Adrienne. “I think that by him getting close to Christ, that came out. I didn’t see it before, because he was so defiant.” Despite his attitude, he began to experience success in school. “I had been held back before, so I was surprised I did well at school. I thought, ‘I’m doing well here, let’s see what else I can do.’” Romello has also noticed changes with his mom. “We spend more time together. Our home is centered on Christ, and work comes second. So the priorities have changed.” In addition to making improvements in school, Jeremiah grew spiritually, makes better choices and has become more respectful of others. Upon completion of the Ranch program, Jeremiah was taken off of probation. He recently finished his freshman year of high school and looks forward to one day going to college to study studio production technology. “Eagle Ranch is an amazing experience. I got to meet new people. I worked on how to handle things differently. I learned if you put your mind to it, you can do anything.” if you put your mind to it, you can do anything. Bridging the Divide “I started getting along with people. I made friends in my home and at school.” Josh, 16, The Peace Home For David and Norma Cates, raising their two daughters was a fairly uneventful, normal parenting experience. The girls responded to discipline and never had any problems making friends and fitting in. But things were always different with their youngest child, Josh. With special education needs and challenges, Josh had trouble socially at school and was bullied. At home he was difficult, creating chaos when things didn’t go his way. “Josh definitely used to run the show,” remembers his sister Amy. “We’d go where he wanted to eat, do what he wanted to do, because we didn’t want to deal with what he would be like if we didn’t do that.” One bleary morning, in desperation, Norma went online to find help. “I was just frustrated one night. I was up at 3 o’clock in the morning researching the internet and praying for God to give me a sign,” she said. “Eagle Ranch popped up. It was the only thing that stood out to me.” Once Josh was at the Ranch, the entire family committed to the program. Through counseling and parent groups, the family learned how to reestablish relationships and set boundaries that worked for Josh. “I learned it wasn’t just Josh’s problem; it was a family problem,” David said. “Things aren’t perfect, but we love and respect each other. That’s something every family should have.” Things aren’t perfect, but we love and respect each other. That’s something every family should have. The disruption in the home caused family members to retreat and grow apart. When Josh’s sisters became adults, they moved away and rarely visited. His parents spent more time in their room to maintain peace in the home. “We were having a lot of conflict between the girls and Josh. Amy and Melissa were having a hard time accepting what he was doing,” said David. “We all just wanted to get away from Josh and his behaviors. We fought all the time. There wasn’t a closeness. It was no way to have a family.” “He’s definitely calmer now,” said Josh’s oldest sister, Melissa. “He’s not quite as persistent about things. He’ll step back and think about things instead of keep pushing.” The rifts are beginning to close and the family is spending more time together. “Things aren’t perfect, but we love and respect each other. That’s something every family should have,” said David. “I think Eagle Ranch has brought us much closer. We’ve got our son back.” “My housedad always had time for 1-on-1 conversations. My housemom always believed in me and wanted the guys in our home to have fun.” Kris, 14, The Love Home A Family Effort Josh, 17, The Joy Home Josh celebrated two graduations this spring. In addition to Eagle Ranch, he also graduated from Flowery Branch High School. This fall, he will head to The University of Georgia as a member of the Redcoat Marching Band, with plans to study civil engineering. “Two years ago, I couldn’t have pictured him graduating from high school and going to college without being incredibly worried,” said his mom, Karen. The family had been in turmoil for about five years with constant arguments and anger. Josh continued to spiral downward. “I was ready to give up. I felt like I couldn’t do it anymore,” Karen said. “But then I realized I had to fight for Josh.” The family knew finding help was critical. They originally looked into summer wilderness programs and even prep schools, when Josh’s grandfather came across Eagle Ranch. “We were in a bad place, and Eagle Ranch seemed like an answer to prayers,” Karen recalled. Working Through Loss In the first 10 days of September 2007, Kris lost his mom and his grandfather. The next month, two more family members passed away. It was a devastating time for the 7-year-old and his older brother. “I was getting constant calls from the school. Kris was flipping over desks and trash cans, breaking pencils. He wouldn’t get on the bus,” recalls Karen. Knowing how much the Ranch helped Kodie, she believed Kris might benefit. Kris and his brother moved in with their Aunt Karen and two cousins, who also were reeling from the losses. As the family worked through their pain, Kris’ older brother Kevin went to a private school, and his cousin, Kodie, came to Eagle Ranch. During his time at the Ranch, Kris learned to express himself and emerged as a leader among his peers. “I’ve seen a tremendous change. He now volunteers to help out at home, and he’s not a problem at school,” Karen said. Kodie returned home as problems with Kris began to escalate. Unable to express himself verbally, Kris’ frustrations came out through defiance at home and problems at school. Her fiancé, Travis, agrees. “He’s a great kid. It’s been a pleasure to be around him and to watch him grow. We look forward to seeing him transition into high school and take what we’ve learned at Eagle Ranch and apply it.” Josh’s turnaround began when each family member took responsibility for their role in their problems. “This situation is not an easy place to find yourself in,” said his dad, Keith. “It’s difficult to see yourself as the leader of a family that isn’t functioning well. That’s a hard pill to swallow. I finally realized that it’s not about me being the leader of my family, but God. He may have a different plan than what I think but that’s ok. Eagle Ranch has given us a place where our family can heal.” “I appreciate my family being able to change and work with me. They were involved in the program and didn’t make it just about me.” I appreciate my family being able to change The Eagle Ranch Honor and Memorial Gift Program Honor and Memorial gifts provide an opportunity to recognize a special person in your life in a meaningful way. The article, “How to Tell if Your Kid is in Trouble,” by Rachel Pomerance Berl, explores warning signs of risky behavior in children. Staub gave the following advice. “Parents tend to wait too late because they’re in denial. They just feel like it’s going to go away on its own. Take care of it before it goes down some roads that are so destructive that it’s hard to remedy.” To read the article, visit EagleRanch.org/USNews. JULIE REYNOLDS & PERRIN REYNOLDS Martha B. Jack, who lives in Eagle Ranch’s Grace Home, was recently accepted into the Johnson High School International Scholars Academy (JISA) for advanced students. In addition to a rigorous curriculum, JISA explores complex global issues and offers students a variety of cultural experiences. “This will help prepare me for the International Baccalaureate program, if I decide to apply for that. I definitely want to go to college and I think this will reflect well and help me get into a school I’m interested in,” he said. Having spent part of his childhood in Georgia and Ohio, Jack is glad his family is back in Georgia, and he looks forward to going to Johnson High. “I lived in Georgia for grades 5-7 and attended DaVinci Academy when I was in 6th and 7th grade. A lot of DaVinci students go to Johnson High. So I feel like I’m kind of getting back into the school I would have been in.” Send Your Message to the Future It is often said that children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see. A gift to Eagle Ranch through your will provides a legacy of helping heal and strengthen generations of children and families. If you already have a will, you can leave a gift to Eagle Ranch through a simple document called a codicil. Talk to your attorney and indicate “Eagle Ranch, Inc., Chestnut Mountain, Georgia,” as a beneficiary in your will, trust or life insurance policy. If you would like more information on how your gift can be used to benefit Eagle Ranch boys and girls, contact Eddie Staub at 770.967.8500 or [email protected].
