(Q) What happens if you do not make the cut in round 1?
(A) There will be a second round of auditions - (same set criteria as round 1, giving the boys the best possible
chance to improve their performance level)
(Q) How do I get up to speed?
(A) START NOW - All boys will be given fair and equitable treatment and tutoring to get up to the level required
via:
• Individual lessons
• Band Practice (Mon & Fri)
• Pod Sessions
(Q) Can I relax now I got through round 1…..??
(A) If the tutors feel that a boy has let his standard drop, we may ask that the boy(s) be re-assessed in the round
2 auditions.
(Similarly 2014 Scotland Tour round 1 audition – we felt the pipers had not given their all, and asked them all to
come back in round 2 . Here we saw a remarkable improvement on many levels playing, attitude etc
Stevie Stanley, BBC Pipe Band Director
BBC Pipe Band Support Group
Every playing member’s progression and commitment, whether they have been selected for the trip or not, will be
monitored and a series of non-attendances at lessons, rehearsals, play outs and engagements without a valid
reason could impact on tour participation.

Tour Criteria - Drum Majors
(Q) Are we taking a Drum Major?
(A) Same Criteria applies to Drum Majors as with the Pipe Band for D/M’s who wish to participate in the tour.
Process:
• Need to apply
• D/M will be assessed on school grounds to determine the level and standard of
performance.
• Assessed by BBC Pipe Band tutors as well as an external Drum Major to decide whether
the boy meets the level expected to compete in the Junior / Juvenile competitions in
UK.
Drum Major, will be required to demonstrate a high level of competence in presentation of
uniform, marching and flourish in a competition style environment (on campus) to justify
that they can compete at international level. A Selection of flourishes will be outlined
which will need to be performed in the routine.
The Drum Major must also, portray a high level of personal presentation and take a keen
interest in the uniform and presentation of the band (help out with general band uniform
requirements at play outs and competitions prior to Scotland and on the tour (if selected)
Stevie Stanley, BBC Pipe Band Director
BBC Pipe Band Support Group
(Q) How many players are we taking? (A) Below outlines the numbers we are looking to make the trip viable.
Minimum Number to make trip viable:
Maximum Numbers of Boys:
pipers
bass
tenors
snares
4 staff (2 piping tutors, 1 snare / Director and 1 bass section tutor) + 1 academic
staff member
Drum Major
Total
pipers
bass
tenors
snares
4 staff (2 piping tutors, 1 snare / Director and 1 bass section tutor) + 1
academic staff member
Drum Major
Total
10
1
2
6
5

20

43
Obviously we can’t take 12 pipers and 12 drummers as this would be a huge imbalance and would not create a good ensemble.
We need to work on a ratio of ½ the amount of snare drummers to pipers +1 eg. 18 pipers = 10 snares
Stevie Stanley, BBC Pipe Band Director
BBC Pipe Band Support Group
(Q) Who decides the final list of boys?
(A) The total number of boys and final
decision of which boys will be participating in
the tour will be decided by the Director and
tutors of BBC Pipe Band.
(Q) When will the places be finalised?
(A) At a date shortly after the second round
of auditions in 2015.
Stevie Stanley, BBC Pipe Band Director
BBC Pipe Band Support Group
Future Tours / Trips:
As we are representing the College in an international competition we must aim to have the highest standard of
playing ability that we possibly can.
It is unfortunate that boys will inevitably miss out however we have adapted our Strategic Plan to help boys
participate in tours / trips in future year.
Proposed Major Events Schedule for next 3 years (Pipe Band Business plan will be reviewed in 2018)

Points of note:
Due to the nature of competitions and the expectation levels and standard required in this environment there is
never any guarantee that all pipers or drummers will play. A whole host of reasons that could contribute to this could
be Instrument malfunction, weather conditions, and players being / feeling sick, nerves, anxiety or simply the band
member not playing well enough on the day.
BBC Pipe Band’s focus is always to play our total compliment of players, but even bands from the bottom in Novice
Juvenile to the top Grade I (Open Grade) bands come up against many obstacles and are sometimes unable to field
their full strength squad at some competitions due to varying reasons.
We ‘BBC pipe Band’ always hope that we never encounter any obstacles that will stop a particular boy not competing,
however if things do transpire, we as tutors will do everything in our powers to give the boys the best possible
opportunity of ‘getting on the park’.

Edinburgh Castle is a fortress which dominates the skyline of the city
of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle
Rock.
Edinburgh Castle is in the care of Historic Scotland, and is Scotland's
most-visited paid tourist attraction, with over 1.3 million visitors in
2011.[3] The British Army is responsible for some parts of the castle,
although its presence is largely ceremonial and administrative,
including a number of regimental museums. As the backdrop to the
annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo it has become a recognisable
symbol of Edinburgh and of Scotland

The Culloden Experience
The exciting new Culloden Battlefield visitor centre and exhibition opened in December 2007. Through recent archaeological and historical
research the National Trust for Scotland discovered that the previous centre was sited on the third Government line of the battlefield. With the
Trust's resolve to return the battlefield to as close as we know it on 16 April 1746, the centre was moved. The previous facilities had struggled to
cope with visitor numbers at peak times and its site will be returned to being part of the battlefield. The new centre and exhibition allows the
whole Culloden story to be told in an innovative and interactive way which appeals to all the family.

Funding
• Boys contribution
•
Cost for a boy to go on this tour would be around $6,800 (approx.)
•
Looking at a boy to contribute about $4,500 (approx.) towards the cost – depending on
Fundraising etc
•
This includes funding 5 supervisors going on tour
•
Almost all the meals, accommodation, travel, tour gear and other activity expenses are covered
Stevie Stanley, BBC Pipe Band Director
BBC Pipe Band Support Group
Funding
• PBSG’s contribution
•
The Pipe Band Support Group (PBSG) will make a significant contribution as per the 2014 Tour.
However (it would be appreciated) if all parents / boys try to get involved in the fundraising
ventures, to allow for an affordable tour. (please communicate with the PBSG)

Questions
•
Can the Parents go on the Tour
•
Parents are encouraged to go on this tour. (ask any parent who went the last time if they enjoyed
it….)
Stevie Stanley, BBC Pipe Band Director
BBC Pipe Band Support Group
Parents / Families etc on Tour
• Due to the logistical issues in 2014, of trying to tie families down to the trip ( a year
out…) and work out the exact arrangements (as you can imagine this was a logistical
nightmare)
• However we will only book the boys / staff via the PBSG (to make things easier)
• This will allow families to decide the best way that suits their families needs and book
direct with accommodation / travel agent etc.
• It was marvelous to have so many families in attendance in 2014 (and we certainly
want this to continue –in 2016 and beyond)

Questions
•
What would the weather be like?
•
Even though it is the summer in June the weather in Scotland could be rather cold. Some warm
clothes including jackets and fleece will be recommended.
Stevie Stanley, BBC Pipe Band Director
BBC Pipe Band Support Group
Questions
•
Why so many tutors?
•
All staff are there to supervise full time, but it is a huge trip from many perspectives (Massive
competitions and Tutors need prep time to go into these events, for tuning practice logistics etc)
•
2 bagpipe instructors – 1 to play with the band in competitions (other to be there to tune etc)
•
1 snare / director (Pipe Band)
•
1 Snare / Bass & Tenor Instructor
•
1 Academic Staff member – to deal with any issues that need attending to, be there to supervise
the boys when band tutors are busy, be there at wake up time / and when the boys go to sleep,
MC events / concerts, time keeper as we built up to going on the park at the European Champs &
Annan.
Mr Stuart Quill came in 2014 and just done a brilliant job…….(He was a HUGE part of our success)

Questions
•
Can the boys stay back in UK after the tour finishes
•
Yes, as per 2014 Tour, the school has approved for any boy to stay back in UK after the tour is
finished
•
The guidelines as per (sign on / off to parents , with passports etc) at conclusion of tour.
•
These guidelines and sign off will be in the final documentation sent in 2016 to all parents
•
All boys must leave together (via the airline of choice) as part of the Main Tour Group and can’t
leave the group before the commencement of the tour.
•
Collection of boys will be on the last day, or at the conclusion of the final performance (Pitlochry)
