I learned house building as a timber framer nearly 20 years ago. The
emphasis on design and prefabrication I learned early on has shaped me
as a builder. I’ve been designing and building houses ever since.
Since I began as a builder, I’ve been drawn to the idea of designing and building smaller homes, as I enjoy the challenge of balancing
function and form within a limited space. I feel strongly about needing to downsize, as a society, and as individuals. Done right, small
houses demonstrate that to live with less does not mean a decline in
our standard of living.
Wood has always fascinated me and continues to inspire me when
it comes to creating lasting function and beauty. Design is another
aspect that moves me when it comes to building small houses. I also
enjoy the relationships that develop when I’m working with clients,
helping them to build their dreams within budget and on time. It is
satisfying to design and build something as personal as a home and
have it come out as a reflection of the home owners and how they live.
Building a house is a group project. Those that work with and for
SHI are a big part of what makes our products exceptional. It is fulfilling
to work together to build something that is greater than the sum of its
parts. I feel fortunate to work alongside such skilled and creative talent.
The Rogers Family
I love that I can work in our shop at home with my family nearby
and that they are all involved in the business in some way. I like that
my kids know what I do for a living and take an interest in it. I want
them to know how to use their hands and their minds to build whatever
they desire.
Living in Argenta allows my family to enjoy the freedom of country
life. From grazing in the garden to fishing, sailing, and campfires on the
beach, life here is rich in wilderness and simple pleasures. It is a wonderful feeling, to have such a fulfilling and dynamic business in a place
that is so beautiful and wild.

My family first visited Kaslo about 18 years ago and
we were struck by its beauty and energy. We were looking
for a place to move to in BC, and I felt Kaslo would be
great, but may not support a full time chiropractic practice.
We decided on Nelson, in 1996, and I soon began seeing
patients who drove in from Kaslo. My Kaslo patients and
I were both frustrated by the fact that they would have to
sit and drive for another hour back to Kaslo, basically,
negating the benefits of their chiropractic adjustment.
This prompted me to open a satellite clinic in Kaslo on a
once a week basis, Tuesdays.
I’ve come to cherish the beautiful drive to Kaslo,
especially on my motorcycle in the summer. I love my
patients here and enjoy coming up for the special events of
Kaslo (I’ve only missed one Jazz Fest since moving here!)

Because I grew up having my father as a chiropractor,
I enjoyed incredible wellness, and learned to appreciate
the benefits of regular chiropractic care to my health.
Chiropractic helps your nervous system and body work
to its optimum capability. It is, indeed, a rewarding joy, to
see the healthy changes chiropractic care makes when the
body is allowed to function as it was innately intended.

Group of Seven Quality
Thomson Painting
250-353-2580 • [email protected]
Owner: Tom Thomson
They say necessity is the mother of invention. It is also the genesis
for many a business. Thomson Painting came into being in 1990 when
someone needed a house painted and I needed a job. One job led to
another and 22 years later I’m still at it. I enjoy painting and find it
satisfying to remake an older home or make a new one look its best,
all the while working for great people and getting to know them better.
The best paint job is one that lasts. It’s important to me that its done
right with the proper preparation and using the best materials for the
application. Paint is an amazing product that is applied to a wide range
of surfaces and materials, each requiring its own unique approach. The
painting trade is also constantly changing with new tools and products,
some good and some bad, and I try to stay current with all the upgrades.
Over the years, I’ve painted homes and businesses all over Kaslo
and area. Some of the heritage buildings I’m proud to have worked on
are The Kootenaian, The Langham, True Blue Lodge and of course, the
brand new but heritage style Kaslo Hotel.
One thing for sure, painting is for the masochistic, and you are
always at the mercy of the elements. Once, I was rained out four times
in one day. Started work, had to pack up and put all the tools away and
stop, only to have the sun come out and look bright and beautiful an
True Blue Lodge
hour later. Then when I got started again, another storm blew in and
‘gotcha’! Four times!
My wife Ruth and I fell in love with Kaslo over 30 years ago
and enjoy the wonderful community of people who come from all
backgrounds. Many have great stories to share or some humorous
remark to tease you with. For instance, I often get help from people
who say “ You missed a spot” or “That’s the wrong colour” or “Glad to
see you’re getting up in the world!” And it works both ways. When I get
teased about my name, I tell them their paint job was Group of Seven
Quality and should be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars!

Buddy’s Front Street Pizzeria
417 Front Street, Kaslo

Buddy’s Front Street Pizzeria opened in May of 2011 and
our family owned and operated business was founded with
the single purpose of creating authentic Italian cuisine. “Big
City Pizzas, Small Town Service”. Fresh, bold, local, organic,
simple food, lovingly prepared.
We feel lucky to be here and humbled by the overwhelming
support the community has shown. Our customers have been
more than graceful as we stumbled through our first season,
somehow sensing that we were eventually going to get it right.
That’s an owner/operator obsession, to always make it better,
to push the envelope further. After fighting through our first
summer and ‘surviving’ our first winter, we are hugely excited
about springtime, which will bring the arrival of our first
local, organic products.
We have been blessed with the arrival of inspired chef
Taylor Dean Wilson, who shares our passion for food, as well
as our farm-to-table aspirations. He is blowing our minds with
his exotic flavours and impeccable technique!
My wife Cathy and I were initially attracted to Kaslo and
area because of our love of Kootenay Lake, but after meeting

It’s going to be an exciting summer at Buddy’s. We thank
our customers and purveyors for providing us this wonderful
opportunity and look forward to serving you personally!

I moved to the Kaslo in 1984 with my soon to be husband
who had property at Retallack. We lived in Kaslo for a year
before moving to the mountain and needed some income so my
husband said “Why don’t we give music lessons?” My initial
thought was who would be interested in learning to sing around
here, since it is was so far away from any cultural centre? How
wrong was I! I began teaching piano and voice in a rented space
at St. Andrew’s Church, as well as teaching in Nelson, Winlaw,
Nakusp, Trail, New Denver and Slocan City. Over the years I
have grown to conducting several choirs.
My students and I share our talents in many ways. We always
go to the retirement homes in Trail, as well as presenting a
winter and year end recital for my students’ parents. I also teach
numerous adults and we try to put on a little performance for their
communities. One of the choirs I conduct, the Trail Harmony
Choir, is going to be singing in the International Choral Festival
held in Penticton this year. My younger students participate in
local music festivals, which can then proceed to the provincial
level. And as time allows, I perform. I will be finishing up with
the Nelson Opera’s debut opera KHAOS in Grand Forks, May
11, Trail May 12 and Creston May 13.
Love what I am doing? Oh heavens, could it get any better?
Music feeds the soul and it is my passion. For me you eat,
breathe and live music. I feel that I have been blessed with a gift
and to share with others, what could be greater? And of course
all the wonderful people I get to know...they become my family.
I LOVE the Kootenays! Why? First and foremost THE
PEOPLE! Second, where on earth does it get any better then here?
My life has been pretty exciting and I wouldn’t trade in any
of it. It has helped me to become the strong independent woman
that I am today. And raising my children the way I did, they have
come out to be strong, kind human beings.

Owners: Matthew & Nicole Brown
My wife Nicole and I worked at Loftstedt Farm in 2003, and
fell in love with both Kaslo and gardening. After travelling for a
few years, apprenticing at various organic farms throughout North
America, all the while gaining knowledge and experience, it was
time for us to settle down.
It felt natural to move to Kaslo and start up a gardening business,
and in 2008 Conscious Growth Gardens & Landscaping began.
I chose the name because it portrays our dedication to making
conscious, informed decisions while creating and maintaining gardens and lawns. We specialize in organic/pesticide-free lawn and
garden maintenance, contemplating not just the visual appearance
but the effects on our health, as well as our neighbours and the land
itself. Not having any equipment heavier than a mower, we try to
maintain our customers’ properties by hand, with a light footprint.
I love what I do as I spend my days in some of the most beautiful
gardens and properties in Kaslo. Showing up at a property covered
in weeds and in disrepair and working hard to restore it to its former
glory is very satisfying! Nicole works with me in the gardens and
Matthew, Benjamin and Nicole
it is great having my best friend work alongside me. She is a very
knowledgeable gardener, has a keen eye for detail, and is very creative and enthusiastic! We started with a handful of customers and
have grown steadily every year since. Over the years our customers
have become friends of ours, and we feel like we are invested in the
community on both a personal as well as a business level. We are
now celebrating our fifth year of CGG&L in Kaslo!
Nicole and I love living in this community because we feel the
beauty of our surroundings is reflected by the beauty of the people
who live here. We have built ourselves a family amongst the community members, and it feels like home.

More Than Just a Health Food Store
Cornucopia
422 Front Street, Kaslo 250-353-2594
www.cornucopiakaslo.com
Owners/Operators: Russell Semenoff and Leona Wood
In 1985 our parents Molly and Paul bought the
business and building known as “Kanes Landing Health
Food Store”. At that time it was a craft and health food
store combined, it was then renamed “Cornucopia”,
meaning horn of plenty and they expanded with natural
food and plant selections. In 2008 my sister Leona and I
purchased the business and we operate it together, with
Leona living out of town.
Over the years our sisters and nieces have worked in the
store, this frequently being the kids’ first job. Currently my
daughter Danica works with us, as does our sister Karen,
who has worked at the store for many years. As well, my wife
Heather takes care of the books and offers moral support in
running the business.
Since the beginning there has always been something new
going on! When our parents first purchased the store Dad drove
to the Okanagan and other parts of BC on produce runs, to find
fresh fruit and vegetables. Our produce is now delivered and as
Karen, Darcie, Molly, Amber, Danica, Russell
the product lines have increased, we have added new coolers
and shelves, keeping the store an interesting place to shop. And
I am happy to say sometime in the next year Leona and her
husband Fred plan to move to Kaslo from Houston BC.
Why do I like what I do? I like the daily challenges put forth
of owning my own business. As well, owning the business has
allowed me to spend time with my family.
The Semenoff family has lived in Kaslo since 1971, and it
is really is the greatest place to live with your family, with so
many outdoor opportunities right outside your door.

Handcrafted Custom Ironwork

I fell in love with blacksmithing during
a summer job as a university student at the
Ontario Agricultural Museum. It was one
of those pioneer village type places, where
you get dressed up in period costume and
demonstrate various skills to the public
such as wagon making, woodworking and
blacksmithing. I was hooked right away.
The forge, the fire, the bellows, the anvil
– it all seemed very ancient and magical!
Eventually I found part time work after school at a blacksmith shop in the little
Mennonite town of St. Jacobs, Ontario. I
felt very honoured to be learning the ancient techniques passed down over thousands of years.
While I was working there, some
ironwork came in from a little town
called Crawford Bay, BC. In my bones I
could feel the pull of the mountains and
wouldn’t it be great if I could combine
this with my new-found love of blacksmithing. So, I called Kootenay Forge in
Crawford Bay and told them that I wanted
to work for them and luckily for me they
needed someone.
Wow, what a first summer in the Kootenays. It was 1992 and I was living on
Powerlines beach and riding my old ten
speed to work. Good times! After some
time spent honing my skills, I set off on
my own to make more creative, one-of-a
-kind pieces. This really fed my spirit and
the warm reception from my patrons gave
me the courage to be the artist I wanted
to be. Thus, Waterfall Metal Studio was
born.
After years of being on the East Shore,
I have now settled with my family at
9 Mile on the North Shore. We love living
in the Koots; its beauty is stunning but the
great people make it home.

I was born and raised here. Then came 15 years of university,
travelling, and working in the Northwest Territories and Yukon.
My wife, Georgie and I settled here in 1989 and soon had four
children in the space of two and a half years!
My parents moved here in 1956. As my mom wrote back
then, with “the old Ford hanging on by his rear tires” going
around Coffee Creek bluffs, they made their way to Kaslo.
When they got here she saw “a lot of empty buildings in town,
not to mention houses...I feel like a youngster there are so many
dodderers around...” Kaslo was a bit worn and tattered at the
time, but there was promise in the air.
Many of those dodderers, and many of the younger, family
crowd became our family’s good friends. My parents saw the
kids in the town grow up and have kids of their own, and now
my wife Georgie and I, and our generation, have witnessed the
same evolution, with our own kids having grown up and “flown
the coop” (no grandkids yet – no rush!).
In my work as a lawyer I enjoy seeing old friends come
through the door, as well as people new to town. Some new
people stay and some move on. I like to think those who stay

do so for some of the same reasons my mom and dad did –
the astonishing beauty of the area, and the strong sense of
community in Kaslo and north Kootenay Lake. And always that
sense of promise, of new things happening.
So for me, that’s the big picture about living here.
What makes my office tick? That’s easy. My assistant,

comprehension and cordiality are unparalleled. My office team

Kenadon Electronics began at my kitchen table as an evening
hobby while I was working in Winnipeg in 1981. When my
wife Donna and I moved to Saskatchewan in 1986 to farm, the
hobby evolved into a part-time business and moved with us. In
1998, the business proved to be more profitable than farming
and turned into full time jobs for Donna and me. Kenadon
Electronics allowed us the opportunity to raise our family in a
rural setting. Three years ago we decided to relocate to Kaslo to
enjoy the mountain life and spectacular outdoor recreation while
continuing to produce electronics.
Kenadon Electronics is an electronic design and assembly
business centred around electronic monitors for agricultural
implements. We design and produce the little black boxes in large
farm machinery (such as swathers and combines) that beep and
whistle at farmers to keep them on track in the field! My degree
in Engineering and Donna’s degree in Computer Science allow
us the freedom to run our own business from home, and enjoy
an afternoon of hiking or skiing when we get caught up with our
orders. We have become very involved in Kaslo through various
organizations and clubs and feel like we have found a home in

In 1999 my partner Jim and I were on vacation on our Harleys

The ride is what kept bringing us back, as well as the beauty.
After all those wonderful summers, we decided to semi-retire
and live here full-time. After working several years for a local
company as their accountant/comptroller and having 30 years’
experience in the accounting industry, I decided to hang my own
shingle and did so in January 2012. To some people accounting
may be boring but for me numbers make sense – it’s a right brain
thing – fits me.
I am not your typical accountant type. As mentioned above
I ride a Harley and am proud to say I am known for my burn

in Athabasca, then Jim and I became the favourite “burnout

do burnouts for the crowd. I’ve been riding since I was about 13,

burnouts because tires cost too much, unless of course you want

Rick owns and operates Mirror Lake Campground and Contracting, while
Lex and his family own and operate Jones Boys Boats. Myself and my

When the property at Woodbury was purchased there was a party line

want: boating, quadding, prospecting...it is all here and Kaslo is minutes
away. The Jones Boys have dedicated ourselves to sharing the beauty
of Kootenay Lake with others and we invite you to join in the ongoing
adventure.
