For over fifty years the universal Church has celebrated this Sunday as the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. In this way she reminds us of our need to pray, as Jesus himself told his disciples, so that “the Lord of the harvest may send out laborers into his harvest.” Jesus’ command came in the context of his sending out missionaries. He called not only the twelve Apostles, but another seventy-two disciples whom he then sent out, two by two, for the mission. Since the Church “is by her very nature missionary,” the Christian vocation is necessarily born of the experience of mission. Hearing and following the voice of Christ the Good Shepherd, means letting ourselves be attracted and guided by him, in consecration to him; it means allowing the Holy Spirit to draw us into this missionary dynamism, awakening within us the desire, the joy and the courage to offer our own lives in the service of the Kingdom of God. To offer one’s life in mission is possible only if we are able to leave ourselves behind. On this 52nd World Day of Prayer for Vocations, I would like to reflect on that particular “exodus” which is the heart of vocation, or better yet, of our response to the vocation God gives us. When we hear the word “exodus,” we immediately think of the origins of the amazing love story between God and his people, a history which passes through the dramatic period of slavery in Egypt, the calling of Moses, the experience of liberation and the journey toward the Promised Land. Passing from the slavery of the old Adam to new life in Christ is an event of redemption which takes place through faith. This Passover is a genuine “exodus”; it is the journey of each Christian soul and the entire Church, the decisive turning of our lives towards the Father. At the root of every Christian vocation we find this basic movement, which is part of the experience of faith. Belief means transcending ourselves, leaving behind our comfort and the inflexibility of our ego in order to center our life in Jesus Christ. It means leaving, like Abraham, our native place and going forward with trust, knowing that God will show us the way to a new land. This “going forward” is not to be viewed as a sign of contempt for one’s life, one’s feelings, one’s own humanity. On the contrary, those who set out to follow Christ find life in abundance by putting themselves completely at the service of God and his kingdom. Jesus says: “Everyone who has left home or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life.” All of this is profoundly rooted in love. The Christian vocation is first and foremost a call to love, a love which attracts us and draws us out of ourselves, “decentering” us and triggering “an ongoing exodus out of the closed inward-looking self towards its liberation through self-giving, and thus towards authentic self-discovery and indeed the discovery of God.” Nursery Coordinator: Anne Salazar The exodus experience is paradigmatic of the Christian life, particularly in the case of those who have embraced a vocation of special dedication to the Gospel. This calls for Child’s Play: Alyce Gabrysch a constantly renewed attitude of conversion and transformation, an incessant moving 281-578-9332 forward, a passage from death to life like that celebrated in every liturgy, an experience of Passover. From the call of Abraham to that of Moses, from Israel’s pilgrim journey Bingo: Friday at 7:30 p.m. through the desert to the conversion preached by the prophets, up to the missionary 281-578-3905 journey of Jesus which culminates in his death and resurrection, vocation is always a Welcome Newcomers work of God. He leads us beyond our initial situation, frees us from every enslavement, breaks down our habits and our indifference, and brings us to the joy of comIf you would like more munion with him and with our brothers and sisters. Responding to God’s call, then, information on our Parish means allowing him to help us leave ourselves and our false security behind, and to Community, please visit strike out on the path which leads to Jesus Christ, the origin and destiny of our life and www.epiphanycatholic.org. our happiness. 2 Events & Meetings This Week SUNDAY, APRIL 26 Ladies Club Quilt Raffle Sale 9:45 & 11:30 AM, Nursery: 0-5 years: Room 214 9:45 & 11:30 AM, Children’s Liturgy of the Word: Grade 4,5 3:30 PM, Children’s Faith Formation 3:30 PM, Jr High Faith Formation 7:00 PM, HSFF/Confirmation: PAC WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29 9:00 AM, ESL LEVEL 4: ROOM 307 9:30 AM, ESL Level 1/2: Room 310 9:30 AM, ESL Level 3: Room 308 9:30 AM, Called to be Mom: Rec Rm 10:00 AM, Bible Timeline Series: Den 6:30 PM, Catechist Appreciation Dinner: Family Center 7:00 PM, Adult Choir Practice MONDAY, APRIL 27 THURSDAY, APRIL 30 9:00 AM, ESL Level 4: Room 307 9:30 AM, ESL 2: Room 303 9:30 AM, ESL Level 1/2: Room 310 6:30 PM, Spanish Bible Study: PAC 9:30 AM, ESL 4 Conversation: Rm. 301 7:00 PM, Adult Confirmation Class: 7:00 PM, A Biblical Walk Through the Epiphany Room Mass: Epiphany Room 7:00 PM, Wedding: Chapel 7:00 PM, Scout Troop 1146: Rooms 7:00 PM, Ad Altare Dei: Rm. 201/202 204/205/206/207/212 7:00 PM, Line Dancing: Family Center 7:00 PM, Job Networking: Rec Room FRIDAY, MAY 1 TUESDAY, APRIL 28 9:30 AM, ESL Level 3: Room 308 9:30 AM, ESL 2: Room 303 7:30 PM, Bingo: Family Center 9:30 AM, Quilters: Room 411 9:30 AM, Second Family: Room 507 SATURDAY. The Knights of Columbus thank each and every one of you for making the dinners a success. One of the projects we are going to do with the profits is to make and deliver box lunches for the homeless on May 17th. We invite all members of the Epiphany Faith Community to join us in this endeavor on Sunday, May 17th at 8 A.M. We will be gathering in the PAC center and making 600 sandwiches and putting them in bags along with bottle water and chips. Our goal is to help on this one day, make life a little easier for the less fortunate. After making the box lunches we will be taking them to Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen and distributing them there. If we have extra food we will be taking it to a nearby park (James Butte) and distributing the rest of the food. The total time from start to finish should be about 4 hours. We invite all members of our faith community to participate. If you are in need of service hours please come. The recipients are so appreciative and thankful . So, please come out before Mass, or after Mass and help make sandwiches, distribute the food, or do both. It will be an experience you and your family will cherish forever. Do you ever ask Jesus what He wants you to do? How do you listen for the response? The answer is usually in “quiet whispers”. Take time in silent, daily prayer to hear His answer. This new fund is established for donations to add to the beauty of our worship space. With your contribution or memorial gift, we hope to add Stations of the Cross and statues for our Church. At any time during the year, you are welcome to send in a donation or place your gift in an envelope in the collection during Mass with the designation, “Sanctuary Beautification Fund.” Thanking you in anticipation of your generous response. 5 Thank You From Deacon John Evanoff On behalf of my family, I want thank all of you who have offered prayers, encouragement, food, cards and flowers on the occasion of my mother’s passing during Holy Week. Also, I know many of you prayed for her and our family during her long period of suffering and I am especially grateful for the graces that came as a result. Thank you all very much. Deacon John Evanoff Vocations Corner World Day of Prayer for Vocations Today: Sunday, April 26, 2015 The purpose of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations is to publically fulfill the Lord’s instruction to, “Pray to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest.” (Mt. 9:38; Lk. 10:2) Our prayers offered throughout the Church affirm the primacy of faith and grace in all that concerns vocations to the priesthood and to the consecrated life. This year marks the 51st anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Let us pray as a family for vocations! Join Catholics around the world in prayer for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. All Catholics of the Archdiocese are encouraged to gather in their parishes to join in public and/or private prayer. Attention parishioners: The Respect for Life Committee here at Epiphany of the Lord has now been in existence for a year. In that year we have been able to accomplish some great things. We have a Holy Hour every Tuesday during Adoration, we have been visible in the community by participating in the Life Chain, have designed and distributed our prayer cards and worked hard to begin educating our parish on pro-life matters, brought in a speaker beginning the process of educating our youth and are forming a sub-committee to work specifically with our youth teaching Catholic Pro-life teachings. We had a beautiful Day of Prayer and Adoration January 22 in response to the Anniversary of Roe vs. Wade and plan to continue this day of prayer annually. We have several issues we will be addressing this spring and events to plan and attend in the Fall. Our committee is currently a handful of dedicated people, but we need more! What a better way to serve Our Lord then through helping promote a culture of Life! THE GOOD SHEPHERD This Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally referred to as “Good Shepherd Sunday.” Today we listen to the words of the Lord as he refers to himself as the “good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep.” It is sometimes so difficult for us to grasp the reality that anyone would lay down his or her own life for the sake of someone else. This is especially true in a society that places high value on power and personal advancement, often at the cost of “trampling” on other people in order to climb the ladder. Today’s scriptures point to the one we are called to emulate—the one who lays down his life for his sheep. Today’s scriptures challenge us to discover ways to bring life to those around us—to build up rather than to tear down. Copyright © J. S.
