Large crowds came to sample the food and drink
of some of the great restaurants and pubs in Katy at
the Taste of Katy Tailgate, August 20, from 5:009:00 p.m. in the parking lot at 814 East Avenue at
1st Avenue in Old Katy. Participating restaurants
included D’Amico’s Italian Market Cafe, Babin’s
Seafood House, Baker St. Pub & Grill, Hasta la Pasta,
Crawfish Café, Da Vinci Ristorante Italiano, The
Cellar Door, No Label Brewing Co, Zoes Kitchen,
What’s Poppin Popcorn, Chick Fil A, Los Cucos,
Midway Barbeque, Wright’s of Texas Salsa and
Snowdog Ice Cream (truck).
Live music entertainment was provided by the
Rankin Twins and the Justin Van Sant Band. Johnny
B with KSBJ Radio broadcast live from the Tailgate
party. The kids had inflatables, face painting, games
and balloon artists. Katy ISD student groups helped
out at the different booths.
The best part of Taste of Katy Tailgate was that
it was all free because of the generous donations of
Katy area restaurants, and it was underwritten by the
Matt Schomburg State Farm Agency. Tailgaters were
requested to bring a backpack and/or school supplies
that would be distributed to needy children in Katy
ISD schools.

Ayers, president of Ayers Meetings & Events and a
board member emeritus of the Katy Family YMCA

“The more we talked about it the more we
became excited about bringing something

Katy Market Days. We just wanted to bring
another event to this part of town, something
that could bring people together every year
to the area, and at the same time support a
good cause. I have been blessed and I want
to make sure I am passing that blessing
forward.”

Help the Katy Prairie Conservancy
(KPC) kick off the fall season with its
Unplugged Adventure: “Rails in the
Rice” on Sept. 20 from 6 p.m. – 7:30
p.m. at Nelson Farms Preserve on the
Katy Prairie in far west Houston. KPC’s
Unplugged Adventures are designed to
get folks outside to explore the prairie.
Rice farms and rangelands are home
to thousands of species of wildlife,
including the rail, a bird which moves
silently through rice paddies, thriving
in marshy conditions. During this
Unplugged Adventure, you might also
spy egrets seeking insects among cow
herds and frogs patiently waiting for prey
along drainage ditches.

Katy-residents will have a unique opportunity

District’s Central Green Park – the half-acre
multipurpose park and public events venue

Cinco Ranch and Seven Lakes Battling For Top
Place as District Competition Begins

In the week leading into the start of District 19-6A volley ball
competition, Cinco Ranch and Seven Lakes are battling for top
honors. Cinco Ranch leads with a 17-3-0; Seven Lakes has a 148-0 record at this edition deadline.
Seven Lakes players lead in two categories: Maggie O’Connel
leads in Hitting Percentage with an average of .494 and Camille
Conner in Assists and Serving Aces, .404. Corin Evans for
Cinco Ranch has the lead in Attacks-Kills at .174 over Michaela
Daniels of Seven Lakes, .129. It’s a close battle for supremacy
in the district.
“We played them (Seven Lakes) in the beginning of the
season,” said Cougar head coach, Danielle Wells, “in the Katy
ISD tournament and beat them in one of the bracket games,
3-1.”
Corin Evans was on varsity last year as a sophomore. “She
is overall an amazing athlete,” said Wells, “very strong. She
isn’t just a one sport athlete. She is also very good at basketball,
actually her first sport. She could go play any sport and do well
in it. On the court she wants the ball in tight situations. She’s
a great hitter and plays all the way round for us, front row and
back row.”
The Lady Cougar pre-district schedule had to be readjusted
from what it was last year.
“When they realigned everybody, some districts started earlier
than last year, we had to drop some teams that we played in preseasons past who are normally pretty good teams.
“This year I had to pick up some games with different teams. I
had to pick up some games with different schools we never played
before such as Elkins and Houston Lamar. Elkins and Lamar are
good teams, but the competition level could be a little stronger for
us. I feel maybe our record is maybe better because our preseason
may not be as strong as their (Seven Lakes) preseason.”
The Lady Cougars begin district play on Sept. 12 against
Mayde Creek Rams. “Last year their varsity was young and
Coach Miller retired; they have a new coach.” The Rams preseason record is 2-14-0. Seven Lakes opens on Sept. 12 at Seven
Lakes against Tompkins High School, a newcomer to varsity
volleyball. Tompkins record is 2-8-0.

West said he had lots of support from his
offensive line, “a lot of good openings I could get
through, and I was hoping I wouldn’t get caught.
I can’t speak highly enough about our offensive
line. They’re getting better every day.
“Last week I know we didn’t play at the level
we could have played,” continued West. The
Spartans defeated Fort Bend Travis, 27-16. “We
had a lot of people out. This week we did a little
better, but there is a lot we can improve on.”
To complete the Seven Lakes scoring, Batchlor
Johnson intercepted an Austin pass and went in
from 28 yards; Cameron Thomas scored on a 5
yard run; James Brown raced through the Austin
defenders for 52 yards, and Jeff Riney had a 27
yard field goal. Nathan Farewell accounted for
five of the Spartan PATs; Blake Burchard had
one.

allowing a measly 50 yards rushing up until the fourth quarter
when Wilson gave second team players some game experience.
Total yards rushing for Austin was 102.
In the Austin game, middle linebacker, Tommy Brown,
continued his mastery of opponents offensive efforts. “I know I
had two tackles that resulted in yardage losses in the third quarter,
and probably 8-10 tackles for the night,” said Brown. “They
(Bulldogs) had 3 and outs just about every offensive series up until
late in the fourth quarter when we put the 2’s in.”
Coach Wilson said after the Travis game, improvement in
the Spartan special teams play was the biggest concern. “Big
improvement…we made a couple of changes, brought up Nathan
Farewell from the JV team to do some kicking. In his first game
he did an excellent job. Austin’s starting field position on kick-offs
was at the 20 yard line or less. He did a great job on field goals
and extra points.
“We definitely played better than last week,” continued Wilson,
“but there still are a lot of errors we need to correct. We can run
the ball, we just need to throw the ball a little better, hit the open
guys. Hibbeler missed some passes early on but overall he did a
good job. He stayed in the pocket and made some throws. Our
receivers dropped a couple balls that should have been caught.
The defense set the offense up nicely through the games. Once we
get the offense started we will be in great shape.”

“The game gave our kids who haven’t played a varsity
football game a chance to see the speed of the game.
Now that everyone knows where they are at, they can
improve and make us a better football team for the rest
of the season; we needed the experience,” Coach Gary
Joseph told The Katy News.
“Our offensive line is inexperienced right now, young
and made some mistakes,” Coach Joseph continued.
“Not a conglomerate of things, but little mistakes here
and there that affected the execution of our running game
and our offense. We will have to throw the ball more this
year.”
Week 2
Cinco Ranch came into the game with Jersey Village
with a 10-0 record against CFISD in the regular season
dating back to 2008, primarily against Cy Ranch, Cy
Ridge and Cy Springs.
The Jersey Village Falcons in their debut against Cinco
Ranch spoiled the Cougars unbeaten string.
Backup kicker, Jordan Henderson’s field goal attempt
with four seconds left on the clock gave the Falcons the
victory. Jersey Village head coach David Snokhous said
his regular kicker, Garcia was unavailable for the kick,
but now it’s good to know he has two capable players at
that position.

Robots At ConocoPhillips’
Bring the Future to Work Day
A group of students from Cinco Ranch High School’s
robotics Team 624 (“CRyptonite”) recently showed off three
of their robots to team sponsor ConocoPhillips’ employees
and their children at the company’s annual Bring the Future
to Work day.
With their demo set up in the company’s gym, the students
had plenty of room to show the shooting and maneuvering skills
of their robots which were used during the past three FIRST®
(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)
Robotics Competition seasons. Each robot was designed and
built by CRyptonite students working alongside adult mentors
to perform tasks specific to each season’s game. The 2014 robot,
“Sidewinder” shoots large exercise balls, while “Thor” (2013)
fires Frisbees and “Panzer” (2012) shoots foam basketballs.
Under the supervision of CRyptonite team members,
ConocoPhillips employees and their children were able to drive
the robots and shoot balls and Frisbees and play catch with the
robots. The CRyptonite students were also on hand to answer
questions, and to talk about the team and FIRST robotics.

Vice President Katy ISD Board of Trustees
Katy ISD is an exceptional district with much to be thankful
for. Each year we see our students strive for, and achieve
excellence in academics, athletics, fine arts and more. Creating
an environment that encourages student success is attributed to
the continued dedication from our teachers, parents, volunteers,
business partners and community members.
Each month, the Board gets the privilege to celebrate
students and staff members for achieving excellence, and
during the August Board of Trustees Meeting, we recognized
more than 30 students for their recent academic and athletic
accomplishments. Among those recognized were the Cinco
Ranch High School Robotics Team 624 for winning the
Texas Robot Roundup Tournament and achieving national
ranking status, the junior high students who received Grand
Recognition as part of the Duke TIP program, and our AllAmerican Swimmers.
Also during our recognitions portion of the evening, Chief
Financial Officer Christopher J. Smith accepted an award on
behalf of Katy ISD for achieving Platinum Award level status
as part of the Texas Comptroller’s Leadership Circle Program.
New this year, the Texas Comptroller enhanced the Leadership
Circle Program by spotlighting entities that meet an even
higher standard of financial transparency by adding this
Platinum Award level. It’s an honor to be part of a District that
is not only dedicated to academic success, but also to providing
financial transparency.
As a new school year begins, I look forward to many more
celebrations from our students, thanks to the quality programs,
staff and dedicated community in Katy. Together, we will
ensure our students are prepared for the future.

Senior Artists Get Advice From Museum Curator
Fort Bend County - Local artists 55 and better are busy getting ready
for the1st Annual Senior Art Show opening September 18th at The Mamie
George Community Center. Ana Villaronga-Roman, curator for the Katy
Contemporary Art Museum stopped by to review the collection and help the
emerging artists prepare for their first exhibition.
“I was happy to see such a diverse collection of styles. Expressive,
traditional, contemporary…” says Roman, “This group has talent and
obviously having a lot of fun with their art. I am very excited for them.”
Ana was invited to the center as a community educational speaker. She
helped the seniors select and arrange their artwork so it would compliment
the exhibit. She discussed pricing, portfolios, and how to create an artist
statement. “There is a lot to learn,” commented Carmen Jolomo, “but I’m
feeling ready for our show.”

The Katy Family YMCA and The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch
recently announced lead sponsors for the 12th annual Turkey Dash
to be held November 27, 2014. The YMCA Turkey Dash is Katy’s
premiere fun run and a Thanksgiving Day tradition for thousands
of Katy area families.
Returning as the event’s Presenting Sponsor is Reliant, an
NRG company. Other lead sponsors include Grand Vision,
UnitedHeathcare, Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus and
Cram Crew.
The event was the brainchild of leaders from the Y and the
church wishing to organize a large-scale holiday event to promote
community bonding. Now the Turkey Dash has grown into a
well-recognized, highly-anticipated community Holiday kickoff
celebration.
Race day highlights include awards in age categories for the
10K and 5K. The post race party features door prizes, refreshments
and games as well as a Kids Fun Zone complete with a rock wall,
moonwalks, games and more.
With four events to choose from, there’s something for everyone;
a Kids Fun Run, a 10K, 5K and a 1 Mile Walk/Run. New additions
for the 2014 event include tech shirts for the first 1,000 10K race
registrants and a costume contest. All races start on Peek Road near
the Katy YMCA located at 22807 Westheimer Parkway, one block
off the Grand Parkway in Cinco Ranch.
Registration is now open with early bird pricing through October
