About the Hannibal Area Chamber of Commerce
T
he Hannibal Area Chamber of Commerce is a volunteer organization
with a mission of the optimum development and growth of the Hannibal
area and a purpose of promoting the commercial, industrial, civic, and
general welfare of the Hannibal area. Striving to accomplish its purpose, the Chamber
organizes and hosts many programs throughout the year. Some of the events are
focused around uniting area business leaders, some work to draw new businesses to
the area, and still others increase awareness of Hannibal’s role and influence on the
national and the global economy. This not-for-profit corporation serves as a unifying
force for hundreds of businesses and professional firms in the Hannibal area.
The members of the Hannibal Area Chamber of Commerce are a diverse group
representing all types of businesses and industry. Together the Chamber members
achieve collectively what few could do individually: the optimum development
and growth of the Hannibal area. More than 425 businesses and professional firms
cooperate to make the Hannibal area a better place to live, work and play.

City Government
A
Manager-Council form of government serves Hannibal citizens.
As the Chief Executive Officer of Hannibal, the mayor is an active,
voting member of the city council. The city is divided into six
wards, each of which is represented by one council person to be elected by the
qualified voters of the respective ward. All newly elected officials serve a 3-year
term.
Together, the city council and the mayor give direction to the office of the
city manager. The City Manager oversees the daily operation of business and
directs municipal operations and the City’s employees.
City council meets on the first and third Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall,
320 Broadway.
Hannibal residents may register to vote at the Collector’s office in the Hannibal
Courthouse or at the Marion County Clerk’s office in Palmyra. Ralls County
residents of Hannibal may register at the courthouse in New London. To be
eligible to vote in municipal elections, voters must be registered by the fourth
Wednesday prior to the election.

ach year families from across the country and the world enjoy visiting
Hannibal. The busy town that Mark Twain wrote about still charms
guests as they visit the many tourist attractions. Over 400,000 tourists
visit Hannibal annually. As they walk through the historic district, sightseers can
enjoy the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum properties, specialty shops, craft
boutiques, art galleries, riverboat cruises, live theatre, beautiful parks and
much more.

For more than 50 years, the chamber’s
Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher have
been Hannibal’s most recognized
ambassadors. Each year the chamber
invites every seventh grader in Hannibal
to participate. After taking tests,
participating in interviews, and final
judging, the field is narrowed to five
Toms and five Beckys. On the Fourth
of July weekend the “official” Tom and
Becky are selected. Although all ten
Toms and Beckys make numerous
appearances, the “official couple”
travel throughout the United States
and around the world representing
“America’s Hometown”.
Several other historic sites including the Mark Twain Cave, which Twain made
famous in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, mansions, historic homes, and scenic
overlooks are located in Hannibal or just outside of the city. Hospitality is abundant
in our clean hotels, cozy bed and breakfast inns and modern campgrounds. Dozens
of restaurants serve a wide variety of meals, including local fare, elegant dining and
fast food.
Hannibal carries the honorary title of “America’s Hometown” and celebrates its
heritage in vibrant festivals held throughout the year. The largest is National Tom
Sawyer Days, held over Independence Day in July. This celebration includes the
national fence-painting contest, frog jumping contests, the Tom & Becky contest, a
festive parade, arts and craft displays, abundant food and the 4th of July fireworks.
The Hannibal Cannibal 10K run and 5K walk are also held during Tom Sawyer Days.
Whether enjoying riverboat cruises, historic tours, artists’ studios or antique
shopping, visitors to Hannibal find it’s easy to fill up a weekend or week with exciting
excursions to form lasting memories.

Hometown History
T
oday, Hannibal Missouri is a thriving city supported by industrial
and retail businesses, state of the art healthcare services, diversified
agri-business, and a world-renowned tourist community.
Founded in 1819 by Moses D. Bates, the river town soon flourished as a
principal docking port for steamboats, flatboats, and packet steamers traveling
the upper Mississippi. By 1845, Hannibal had achieved city status and by 1860,
the population had more than doubled, making it the second largest city and
the third leading commercial center in Missouri.
Early industries that greatly influenced the city’s growth included pork
packing, soap and candle making, coopering, milling of lumber, rope making,
milling of grain, and the railroads. When the thriving steamboat, lumber, and
railroad industries diminished, other Hannibal business ventures took their
place, including shoe manufacturing, button making, and cement production.
Today, Hannibal boasts a diverse industrial economy that includes the
production of agricultural chemicals, food products, rubber and plastic
products, electrical and automotive equipment, and various other
manufactured goods.
The city is proud of its long list of well-known sons and daughters including
William Lear, designer of the Lear jet; Congressman William Henry Hatch;
Navy Admiral Robert E. Coontz; sculptor John Rogers; Margaret Tobin, the
“Unsinkable” Molly Brown; composer Egbert Van Alstyne; and artist Carroll
Beckwith.
Hannibal’s most famous son is Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known worldwide
by his pen name, Mark Twain. At the age of four, Sam’s family moved to
Hannibal from his birthplace in Florida, Missouri, about thirty miles to the
southwest. Many of the popular characters featured in The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and other beloved works, were
based upon people Sam had known while growing up in Hannibal.
Located on Cardiff Hill in Hannibal the
lighthouse was first dedicated in 1935
in celebration of the 100th anniversary
of Mark Twain’s birth and the light was
turned on by President Franklin D.
Roosevelt. The lighthouse has since been
renovated and rededicated in 1963 by
President John F. Kennedy and again in
1994 by President Bill Clinton.

annibal benefits from a prime location in the heart of the
Midwest—directly on the country’s largest river. This unique
geographic position is a profitable benefit for a wide variety of
industrial, retail and service-oriented businesses. Conveniently located in
America’s heartland Hannibal provides convenient access to any region of
the United States. The Hannibal Area Chamber of Commerce takes pride
in promoting the economic development of the region by assisting existing
businesses and recruiting new organizations. Within the city government is
the Industrial Development Authority. The purpose of this board is to help
develop commercial, industrial, agricultural, or manufacturing facilities by
issuing industrial revenue bonds on behalf of the city.
In addition, the Northeast Missouri Economic Development Council actively
works to retain existing industry while promoting the area’s benefits to new
businesses.
On May 18, 2003, the airport was
dedicated as William P. Lear Field. Lear,
who was born in Hannibal, held more
than 150 patents, including that of
the Lear jet, which made fast air travel
affordable for the general aviator sector.
The NMEDC works in cooperation with the Missouri Department of
Economic Development to offer incentives such as business tax credits,
financing and historic preservation programs. The group also administers
the City of Hannibal’s Enterprise Zone program.
The largest industrial concentration in Hannibal is the West Side Industrial
Park, located off of US 61 at Warren Barrett Drive. Many businesses are
located within the park, employing several thousand people. The newest industrial park, located just west of the city between Route MM and US 36/I-72, is
experiencing rapid development. Two other industrial parks are also located in

Public Schools
T
he Hannibal School District features a grade configuration of prekindergarten through grade five in its’ elementary schools, grades
six through eight in middle school, and grades nine through twelve
in high school. The district is comprised of five elementary schools including
Eugene Field, Mark Twain, Oakwood, Stowell, and Veterans. The Hannibal
Career and Technical Center is also a part of the Hannibal School District and
serves the area community providing a wide range of student and adult career
fields plus a very active GED program.

center.
Special programs in early childhood, parenting, guidance and counseling,
health, and special education are a vital part of the total program of the
Hannibal School District. Also provided are remedial services, both during
the school term and during a summer school program. A summer enrichment
program is also offered to all students. In addition to these programs, the
district offers extracurricular activities including athletics, performing and
visual arts, and publications.
There is a strong relationship between the school and community as evidenced
by strong parental involvement, support, and partnerships with community
organizations. Each elementary and the middle school have active parentteacher organizations and strong booster organizations that exist for band,
chorus, and athletics. Success in the activity programs and competitions is a
source of community pride.

Home Education
For parents who are home schooling their children, The Hannibal Area Home
Educators Support Group exists to provide information, activities, support,
and encouragement for families. The group meets regularly and organizes
field trips throughout the school year. Some activities that might be offered
with HAHE include choir, art, computer, quilting, speech, creative writing,
horseback riding, sign language and physical education classes. HAHE is an
inter-denominational Christian group. For more information, contact

Hannibal Career and Technical Center
The Hannibal Career and Technical Center provides up-to-date careertechnical programs for adults, post secondary, secondary, disadvantaged, and
handicapped students. Trade and Industrial programs offered are: building
trades, graphic arts, welding, auto mechanics, machine tool, design drafting
and industrial mechanics. Business programs include office skills, advanced
computer applications, accounting, computer repair, computer multimedia,
network technology, network administration, spreadsheets, keyboarding, legal
office, medical office, web page design and marketing.
Agriculture and childcare programs are also offered. Post high school classes

Parochial Schools
Holy Family Catholic School provides a nurturing Catholic education to
students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The school is fully
accredited and offers a challenging and enriching curriculum. Curricular
enhancements include the fine arts, physical education, algebra for eighth
grade, a computer lab, and an emphasis on technology integration. Holy

St. John’s Lutheran School has served the community of Hannibal since 1860.
Enrollment in pre-K through fifth grade is currently 150. St. John’s offers a full
academic program plus religious instruction in a loving Christian atmosphere.
The curriculum meets State of Missouri standards and includes physical
education, art, music and special areas such as Junior Achievement and DARE.
It also has a computer lab and offers computer instruction to all grade levels.

Higher Education
Hannibal-LaGrange University is a four-year university of the liberal arts
and sciences. Founded in 1858, around 1,200 students come from 26 states
and 29 countries to study. HLGU’s Christian commitment is the basis for the
university motto, “Knowledge for Service.” For over 150 years, integrating
faith and learning has been a key component to the education philosophy at
Hannibal-LaGrange University.
Hannibal-LaGrange offers 34 majors on the baccalaureate level and a Master
of Science in Education degree. HLGU also offers an online program and
a degree-completion program with evening classes for working adults. For
students with a high level of academic ability, HLGU offers an Honors program
with a generous scholarship and the option of spending a semester studying
abroad at Harlaxton College in England.

music and theatre departments at HLG.

HLGU is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
(NAIA) Division 1, and offers sixteen men’s and women’s varsity sports as well
as intramural sports for recreational activity. Fine arts programs in theatre,
music and visual art provide students with a well-rounded education.
The campus has 110 acres of scenic hills and woods, complete with an
environmental study tract, nature trail, and waterfall. HLGU has seen
continued expansion during the last decade, including the recent additions of
two new men’s residence halls (Fletcher Hall North and Fletcher Hall South),
Secker Fieldhouse, Carroll Missions Center and the 50,000 sq. ft. Roland Fine

MACC Hannibal Area Higher Education Center
Moberly Area Community College opened the MACC Hannibal Area
Higher Education Center in 2000 due to growing demand for community
college services. The facility, which serves over 360 students, is located at 141
Communications Drive. The Hannibal site offers a full AAS degree in Early
Childhood, a full AA transfer degree and a full AAT Associate of Arts in
Teaching degree. The MACC Hannibal location has several well-equipped
classrooms, a state-of-art computer lab, a resource center, student commons,
and faculty/staff office space. MACC is also able to accommodate students
that graduate from high school with the A+ certification. Most classes are
offered both in the day and the evening with scheduling available to meet the
needs of traditional students and working students. Students wishing to enroll
can visit the site from 8 am to 7 pm Monday through Thursday and from 8

Hannibal offers residents and visitors meaningful spiritual opportunities. Currently
there are over 80 churches and worship centers in multiple denominations located
throughout the city. Faith-based organizations in Hannibal often work together for
the common good of the area and provide valuable services to those in need.
Several historic church buildings in Hannibal are still in use. Three date to the 1850’s:
Trinity Episcopal Church, the Eighth & Center Streets Baptist and the first Catholic
Church.

abundance of spiritual resources in the Hannibal Area.
Spirituality is a key component to the well-being and wholeness of any community.
Residents and visitors to the Hannibal region appreciate the variety of opportunities
for spiritual education, development, worship, and pastoral care provided by area

located throughout Hannibal provide an ample selection of denomination and

Two parochial schools, Holy Family School and St. John’s Lutheran Elementary
School, provide an alternative to public education while Hannibal-LaGrange

Parks and Recreation
The goal of the Parks and Recreation Department is to contribute to the growth
of individuals and the community by insuring that quality leisure activities are
available for residents and visitors.
The Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department maintains 23 parks over about 600
acres. Riverview Park is the jewel in the parks system. In 2005 it was placed on the
National Register of Historic Places. The park covers over 400 acres, and includes
spectacular views of the Mississippi River, award winning trails that connect the
park to the historic downtown area along the Mississippi River, as well as many
picnic areas, playgrounds and the famous Mark Twain statue.
Huckleberry Park is approximately 60 acres in size. It includes a skate/ramp park,
disc golf course, tennis courts, ball diamond, playgrounds, racquetball courts, picnic
areas and a pond. In downtown Hannibal, visitors can climb or drive to the top
of Cardiff Hill, taking in a stunning view of the river and the historic lighthouse.
Several other smaller parks and playgrounds are located throughout the city. All city
parks are open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The recently renovated Hannibal Aquatic Center is open during the summer
months. It features two twisting water slides, one-drop slide, diving boards, several
water play features, shaded areas and a pool house and concessions area.

Nipper Park Marina, located at the foot of Broadway at the Mississippi River, was
renovated in 2006 and includes 70 new slips. Amenities include a boat launch,
overnight rental, long-term slip rental, fueling station, soda, ice, access ramp, and
easy access into downtown Hannibal. The Marina is open May through October .
The Admiral Coontz Recreation Center is located at 301 Warren
Barrett Drive next to Clemens Field. It has 15,000 sq. ft. of
concrete floor space and houses 2 full-size all-purpose basketball
courts, walking track, elevated stage, and kitchen. The facility
may be rented for private and public events. The facility is open
weekdays 7-5 unless rented or special event.
The Hannibal Parks and Recreation Board meets the third
Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at

The Boat Harbor is located on Broadway at the Mississippi River.
It is open May through October. There are roughly 76 slips
available for rental. Amenities include: boat launch, overnight

The local YMCA offers swimming lessons, weight and strength
training rooms, a gymnasium, 3 racquetball courts, 6000 sq. ft.
Wellness Center, free Toddler Center and Nursery and 3,500 sq.

Transportation
U.S. highways 61 and 36 intersect in Hannibal, making it the busy transportation
hub in northeast Missouri. This intersection was recently upgraded to a single-point
interchange. This urban type of interchange allows traffic to flow more quickly
through the area. U.S. 61 has been designated the “Avenue of the Saints” linking
St. Louis, Missouri with St. Paul, Minnesota by a four-lane highway, which was
completed in 2008. Missouri Highway 79 and Missouri Highway 168 also serve the
city from the south and north respectively.
On September 16, 2000 the new Mark
Twain Memorial Bridge was dedicated
and marked its progress into the 21st
century with an all-day celebration.
The opening of this bridge has allowed
another interstate highway to enter
Missouri, I-72, moving westward.
In the fall of 2000, a new bridge spanning the Mississippi River was completed.
The I-72 bridge, called the Mark Twain Memorial Bridge, links the four-lane
Central Illinois Expressway (I-72) and gives Hannibal residents a safe, easy route
to several Illinois cities including Quincy and Springfield. The expansion of U.S.
36/I-72 from the Mississippi River to the U.S. Highway 24 intersection, seven miles
west of Hannibal, was completed in the summer of 2004. Through the process of
voter approval in 2005 a four county transportation development district (TDD)
was established and funding was approved to assist the Missouri Department of
Transportation in adding two additional lanes to U.S. Highway 36 from just east of
Macon, Missouri to the U.S. Highway 24 intersection just west of Hannibal. This
52-mile project was completed by the end of July 2010. The TDD’s portion of this
project is being funded by a ½ cent sales tax on all goods purchased and sold in the
counties of Macon, Marion, Monroe and Shelby.
The Hannibal Municipal Airport is located west of the city on U.S. Highway 36 and
offers chartered air service. A recent $4.6 million expansion project included the
complete replacement of the main 3900-foot asphalt runway
with a 4400-foot concrete runway with an adjacent taxiway
and new main airport apron. Construction will soon be
underway for a new terminal and an additional runway
expansion to 5500 feet is being studied now.

On May 18, 2003, the airport was dedicated as William P.
Lear Field. Lear, was a native of Hannibal and held more
than 150 patents, including that of the Lear Jet, which
made fast air travel affordable for the general aviation
sector. Non-stop connections to Lambert Field in St. Louis,
Missouri are available at Quincy (Illinois) Regional Airport/
Baldwin Field, approximately 22 miles north of Hannibal.
Commercial bus service is provided to Hannibal by the
Burlington Trailways, providing bus services to St. Louis,
MO and to Burlington, IA seven days a week and is located
at 310 Mark Twain Ave. in Hannibal, 573-221-0033.
Hannibal is also serviced by barge traffic on the Mississippi
River and by two railroad lines, the Burlington Northern
Santa Fe Railway and the Norfolk Southern Railway.

Hannibal and the surrounding communities are alive with artistic expression in all its
forms. Recognized as a leader in community arts statewide, Hannibal is home to many
quality community arts programs, special events, festivals, artists and performers, artsrelated businesses, and arts organizations that enhance the quality of life.
Promoting the arts has been the work of the Hannibal Arts Council since 1976. The
Hannibal Arts Council implements its own year-round programming and provides support
to all community arts programs. The Hannibal Arts Council’s new facility in Downtown
Hannibal features workshop, meeting, gallery and performance spaces.
The annual Autumn Historic Folklife Festival
is anticipated in the community and by the
thousands of visitors it attracts. This oldfashioned street festival is held the third full
weekend in October and features an 1800’s
theme.
An abundance of performances, concerts, theatre, and dance programs are offered
throughout the year in churches, restaurants, businesses, auditoriums, coffee shops, street
corners, and performance venues. The arts are woven throughout our community and
can be experienced around every turn. The Hannibal Concert Association, Mark Twain
Boyhood Home & Museum, Great River Jazz Preservation Society, Hannibal Community
Theatre, Hannibal-LaGrange University and the Hannibal Arts Council each offer a full
season of quality programs each year.
Festivals and special events are great fun in Hannibal! New festivals and special events
are created each year. The annual Autumn Historic Folklife Festival is held the third full
weekend in October and features two days of traditional music, quality artists and artisans,
homemade food, children’s activity area, and the nostalgia of the Historic District. The
National Tom Sawyer Days during the 4th of July draws tens of thousands to Hannibal and
has been voted one of the Top Favorite places to spend the 4th of July in America. The
Twain on Main Festival is held each year on Memorial Day Weekend. Monthly events
include traditional jam sessions, open mic nights, gallery nights and other events which
include the arts.
Many art organizations, groups, and clubs offer individuals a chance to get creative and
fellowship with others artists and are abundant in Hannibal. A variety of group meetings
centered around a specific art interest are available. Classes and workshops are offered
throughout the community on a year-round basis and allow citizens to nurture their own
creative spirit.
The arts in our schools have a strong foundation and offer a variety of art opportunities from the elementary to higher education levels. There are opportunities for the enrichment
of the students as well as the community.
Many professional artists call Hannibal home. Galleries and studios around town also offer
opportunities to view and purchase the works of local talented artists. The Hannibal Art
Club serves as a visual arts guild and arranges month-long exhibits in local banks, Hannibal
Free Public Library and health centers. Hannibal partners with area communities,
Louisiana and Clarksville, for 50 Miles of Art, an economic development plan to recruit
artists to live in our area. Each of the three communities share a commitment to building
a corridor of professional artists, artisans and galleries along
the 50 miles of scenic highway that connects them. Many
new working artists have moved to our region because of the

This small frame house located at 205 Hill
Street, was occupied by the John Marshall
Clemens family from 1844 to 1853. Sam
grew up here and used many incidents from
his real life as patterns for Tom Sawyer and
other of his characters.
From 1853 to 1911, the home was a rental
property. When the home was scheduled for
demolition in 1911, the local Hannibal Commercial Club started a campaign to purchase
the home, but progress was slow. A local
attorney, Mr. George A. Mahan, purchased
the home and gave it to the City of Hannibal
on May 15, 1912.
