Es The Boggs Rideser Cup Wrap Up 7 • p Tam MAY 3, 2008 When the lads from Scotland invented golf in 1456 A.D. they could have never imagined it rising to the level of The Boggs Rideser Cup. On a beautiful, albeit windy, day in Bradenton, FL the entire golf community paused to witness this historic event. Team Tampa led by Captain Limey wonders if his Boggs or mix could have been any Hohnson vs. Team Bradenton led by Captain Rudy. The better. The answer is No. day started with Limey giving Team Tampa a huge edge with his inspirational mix CD for the long ride down to B-Town. The mix included some classics and a new classic “The Best Around” by Joe Esposito. The song became the rallying cry for Team Tampa as they carved their way around the Manatee County Course. As the teams assembled at the legendary clubhouse, it became clear that one team was a little more organized, or gay, than the other. Team Tampa looked the part of a champion while Team Bradenton looked just happy to be there. Team Bradenton landed the first blow by instructing the starter to deny Team Tampa carts until right before tee time. This caused Team Tampa to have to carry their bags to the driving range. BASTARDS! As the first tee time approached the tension built and the ballwashing stopped. This was what everyone had been waiting for all year. The Boggs Rideser Cup. The most prestigious team trophy in all of the BGA. Here is how it went down. Captain Hohnson prepares to unleash one of his legendary drives The Bradenton Ass. Captain shows off the guns Justin decides to go over the water treatment plant Group 1 Lonnie Hohnson / Austin Gillespie Defeat Justin Powell / Christopher Snyder 4&2 This group had the honor of playing the first hole in Boggs Rideser Cup history. Everyone knew how this group would break down for the first 7 holes. Justin and Lonnie would be the main event while Austin & Toph were just along for the ride. The first hole was extremely tense with both teams missing putts to win the hole. Team Tampa built a 2 up lead through the first 7 with Lonnie playing his best and just edging out Justin. As the alternate shot began Tampa was put in an early hole when Lonnie’s tee shot went OB and Bradenton cut the lead in half. The next couple of holes were very tense with each team needing clutch putts to finish off holes. After #11 Tampa had regained the 2 Up lead and set the stage for Austin to contribute to the team. As Captain Hohnson approached the 13th tee he ripped his putter out of his bag and broke it in half over his knee. He looked at Austin and said “Guess you’re putting”. Austin proceeded to sink four putts in a row on 13, 14, 15, & 16 to hold off the hard charging Team Bradenton. Lonnie and Austin used the “Team First” mentality to secure the first point in Boggs Rideser Cup history. Group 2 Joe Grimaldi / Jeff Smith Defeat Tony Rasulo / Douglas Elmore 3&2 This group became known as “The Group of Death”. Not because of the talent level, but because it was rumored that someone may die. This groups details are also shrouded in secrecy. All we know is that Team Tampa/Progressive used some shots that Grimaldi learned during his time with Cirque De Soleil and Jeff Smith’s endless supply of beer to hold off a very talented Team Bradenton. The Commish reports that Grimaldi hit a huge put on #7 to keep the momentum going and the match was decided on the 16th green as was the custom for Team Tampa Group 3 The Commish / Pat Skunda Defeat Rudy / Chad Choate 3&2 For those of you who are craving hole by hole accounts, The Commish has taken time away from his busy bus driving schedule to file this report 1st hole 2nd hole 3rd hole 4th hole 5th hole 6th hole 7th hole 8th hole 9th hole 10th hole 11th hole 12th hole 13th hole 14 th hole 15 th hole 16th hole Push Tampa goes +1 when The Commish has ho-hum par Push, but must be noted, Rudy pulled 5 wood on the 131 yard par 3 and promptly landed it like a butterfly with sore feet. Par from The Commish and par from Rudy for push Bogey by The Commish is good enough for a +2 advantage The Commish makes par but is matched by Choate who is beginning to show his frustrations at not being able to make up ground on Tampa The Commish makes par, B-town misses par putt to halve hole, Tampa +3 The Commish makes kick in birdie, Tampa up +4 The Commish makes blunder in choosing himself to tee off on par three, leaves it short, Skunda skulls chip over green, commish chips to within 4 feet, Skunda misses putt for halve, Tampa lead down to +3 Skunda pushes drive right, The Commish bad second, Skunda even worse third, The Commish puts fourth in water, B-town make bogey, Tampa lead down to +2 Skunda tops drive, The Commish puts within 100 yards, Skunda into bunker, The Commish to within 12 feet, Skunda misses putt, B-town wins with bogey Tampa lead down to +1 Each team has birdie putt, Tampa is away. Biggest shot of match, Skunda drains birdie putt uphill from 30 feet. B-town needs 20 foot birdie putt to halve hole, misses. Tampa regains a two hole lead. Par three scramble. The Commish puts to right side of green, B-town hits in water and short of water. Tampa chips to within 6 feet, makes bogey and wins hole. Tampa +3 Both teams with birdie putt, from just off the green Rudy drains 18 footer for bird, Tampa needing birdie to halve hole and maintain 3 hole lead. The Commish puts dagger in heart of B-town with 15 footer for birdie. Tampa +3 Tampa bogey, B-town par. Tampa down to +2 lead Skunda birdies on his own, B-town makes bogey. Tampa back to + 3 with only three to play. Match is dormie, Tampa makes ho-hum par, ties hole with B-town and wins match 3&2. The Commish, Limey & Decelles Celebrate the Win Captain Hohnson with his traditional pitcher chugging picture Team Tampa, Those some Bad Mama Jamas Group 4 Jason Sato / Justin Powers Defeat Limey / Scott Decelles 2&1 This group was highly anticipated as it was the only group to feature two BGA Champions (Sato, Limey). Here is how Bradenton avoided the sweep.B-town goes up 3 three through the best ball. Alternate shot tourney turns as Tampa evens the match and then goes up 1 after first hole of scramble. B-town wins #13 to even match, then wins 14 to go up 1. With Tampa in the hole for par at #15, Sato drains long, twisting putt of 30 feet to halve hole and maintain a 1 hole lead through 15. It is just after this putt falls, that The Commish informs both groups that The Boggs Rideser Cup has been won by Tampa, now all they are playing for is the skunk. #16 is pushed and #17 is won by B-town to capture the match 2&1 Grimaldi Takes Home MVP Captain Hohnson is pleased to announce that he has chosen Joe Grimaldi as his MVP for Team Tampa. Grimaldi is a relatively new BGA Professional, but in his short time on tour he has shown only one weakness: rain. His play during The Boggs Rideser Cup was key in Tampa’s win. Captain Hohnson would also like to mention that Grimaldi was a “Captain’s Choice” for this event so he deserves some extra ballwashing.
