The three games Life has won coming into Thursday hasn’t been from defense as it’s allowing nearly 86 points per game and is being outshot from the field 46 to 44.2 percent. The Running Eagles have also struggled from the 3-point line, hitting at just 25.6 percent. In it’s 101-93 win over Southern-New Orleans on Saturday, Life had its best shooting mark of the season at 50.8 percent and knocked down a season-high seven threes, so the shooting woes could be starting to end. Williams led the Running Eagles in that one with 30 points. UPIKE Holds Off a Pesky Bluefield Team A strong finish to the first half helped UPIKE hold off hot-shooting Joseph McClain and Bluefield for a 93-82 win last Thursday at the East Ky. Expo Center. With 8:24 left in the first half, the Bears were up by just three, but outscored Bluefield 18-11 the rest of the way to get to halftime with a 10-point lead. That advantage at intermission was important as the Rams trimmed their deficit to as few as four points in the final 20 minutes. An 11-0 UPIKE run midway through the second half was crucial to holding off the Rams. It was a 62-57 UPIKE lead with 12 minutes left, but when Macari Brooks sank a pair of free throws four minutes later it was a 16-point game. The closest Bluefield would get before time expired was seven points. Nation’s Longest Winning Streak Continues With last week’s win over Bluefield, UPIKE has won 48 straight games at home, the longest streak of any NCAA or NAIA men’s basketball program of that kind. Next in line is Arizona at 40, North Carolina Central at 36 and Wichita State with 33 straight. The next longest in the state is Kentucky with 22 straight inside Rupp Arena. Kelly Wells By The Numbers In his time at UPIKE, head coach Kelly Wells is 140-21 at home and when his team’s score at least 90 points his record is 106-7. Wells is in his 10th season with the Bears and already has over 200 wins at 214 entering today’s contest. UPIKE in the National Statistics Seven games into the season, UPIKE shows up numerous times in the top 10 of NAIA stat rankings. The Bears are third nationally in scoring (105.7), third in scoring margin (+41.1), fourth in assists per game (23) and eighth in rebounds per contest (49.4). Individually, Trey Rakes is second in the NAIA in assist/turnover ratio (+8.2), K.K. Simmons is seventh in threes made (18) and Michael Lewis ranks 10th in total blocks with 10. UPIKE Opens Season Ranked No. 2 in NAIA, Again UPIKE came in at No. 2 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released by officials from the national office. It is the second straight season UPIKE has opened at No. 2 and is the 40th consecutive poll that the Bears have been ranked in. Bears Named Preseason Favorites in the MSC For the second straight season, UPIKE was picked to win the MidSouth Conference championship, according to a preseason poll of the league’s coaches. The Bears have captured back-to-back MSC regular-season titles and have advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in four of the past five seasons. Wells has put together a 214-84 record at UPIKE, including winning the 2011 NAIA National Championship. The Morehead, Ky., native was named the NAIA Coach of the Year following that national title. UPIKE has put together eight 20-win seasons in the last nine years under Wells guidance. Included in that run is the program’s first two 30-win campaigns in 2010-11 and 2013-14. Last season, the Bears went 28-6 overall and reached their fourth NAIA National Tournament with Wells. In 2013-14, the Bears’ 31 total wins were the most in program history, while the 17 MidSouth Conference wins are a league record. This is Wells’ 20th season overall as a head coach (433-188), spending one season at Hawaii Pacific in 2005-06, eight seasons at Mason County High School from 1997-2004 and three seasons at Marion County High School from 1995-97. As a college coach, Wells currently holds a 222-103 record through 11 seasons. At Mason County, Wells captured the 2003 Kentucky State Championship and was runnerup in 2004. He was named coach of the year after both seasons, coaching Chris Lofton who would go on to be an All-American at the University of Tennessee. As a player, Wells was a three-year men’s basketball letterman at Morehead State from 199294. Wells prepped at Rowan County High School, leading the team to three trips to the Kentucky Sweet 16 while earning First-Team All-State honors twice in 1989 and 1990. Wells resides in Pikeville with his wife Shawne and their children, Kaylee and Mason.
