Jacques Hamel's murder this week in Normandy, France hit home pretty hard for me. It doesn't frighten me. It doesn't anger me. It just brings to the forefront the reality that life is short and that all Christians who live their faith openly are a target of twisted, evil minds. Our best defense against this evil is to be ready to meet our Lord whenever he calls us home. Evil only ultimately defeats us if we play on its team. In honor of Fr. Hamel, this week, let's pray during mass with particular fervor and devotion. It was in the mass where Fr. Hamel died. We can unite our hearts to his as we worship Jesus for whom Fr. Hamel lived and died. God bless, Father Jonathan + REST IN PEACE + Please pray for the deceased members of our parish, Antonietta Salvati, Jean De Santis Mattiace, Vito Freda, Gilda Pagnotta & our fallen military. A crowd of many thousands has gathered to hear Jesus. At first he speaks only to the disciples, reminding them that it is not persecution they should fear but the judgment that is coming for all who do not acknowledge the Son of Man. Suddenly a man in the crowd shouts out to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” He seems to have grown tired of Jesus speaking only to the disciples. Jesus offers the man no help. Instead he uses the question to teach what, in light of the coming judgment, life really consist of. Jesus tells the crowd a parable. A rich man's lands have yielded more crops than expected. His response is not to consider how he might share all the extra food with others but to wonder how he can possibly store it all. He has what he thinks is a brilliant idea: to tear down his present barns and build larger ones. Then he will have many things stored up for years of eating, drinking, and making merry. “You fool” is God's response to this man because that very night his life will be taken away. To whom will everything belong then, God asks. The rich man's world is small, just him and his possessions, and now he learns that he is to lose his life. What good are his possessions now? Jesus states the moral of the story. This is how it will be for everyone who stores up treasure for himself or herself but is not rich in what matters to God. Centuries later St. Gregory the Great taught that when we care for the needs of the poor, we are giving them what is theirs, not ours. We are not just performing works of mercy; we are paying a debt of justice. Life does not consist in possessions but in sharing what we possess with others. The goods of the © Loyola Press earth have been given to everyone. “BACK TO SCHOOL” GIVEAWAY Grades Pre-K thru 8 Saturday, August 27th - 9:00am to 12:00pm Location: Fatima Hall **While Supplies Last** Sponsored by S.P.M.G. Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major “From the earliest times the Blessed Virgin is honored under the title of Mother of God, in whose protection the faithful take refuge together in prayer in all their perils and needs. Accordingly, following the Council of Ephesus, there was a remarkable growth in the cult of the People of God towards Mary, in veneration and love, in invocation and imitation...” (Vatican II, Dogmatic Constitution on the © AmericanCatholic.org Church, 66). * Come Back to Mount Carmel * Saturday, September 17th - 5pm Mass in English & Italian Followed by “Pasta Night” in Fatima Hall - Details coming... A Prayer for Vocations Through the intercession of St. John Vianney O God our Father, You promised "I will appoint shepherds for My sheep who will shepherd them so that they need no longer fear and tremble: and none shall be missing." (Jer. 23:4-5). Hear the prayers of Your flock. Through the intercession of Your beloved priest, Saint John Vianney, we beg You to call to the sacramental priesthood generous men who will desire nothing more than to serve You in imitation of Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, our High Priest. And after You call them, we pray that You sustain the doubtful, console the discouraged, and strengthen the weak as they start the long and demanding preparation for the priesthood. Mary, Mother of priests, and example of faithful, humble, and joyful acceptance of God's will, help all those who are called to the priesthood to open their ears and hearts to the gentle call of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
