PRESIDENTS LETTER 2012
Thank you all so much for your generous support of the 111th season
of the Southampton Fresh Air Home. Your donations to our camp gave
over 150 physically challenged children the opportunity to enjoy all of
the things their able-bodied peers enjoy: swimming, sailing, sports,
dancing, trips to the beach, arts, crafts, computers and so much more.
Each and every day at the Fresh Air Home is a magical time for our
children, many of whom come from urban settings and apartment living,
where the things they do here daily would otherwise be considered
impossible.
Participating in the camp, in our beautiful natural setting, is an
opportunity for our children to gain self-confidence, physical strength,
increased agility and the recognition that they can become a contributing
and special member of their communities. I am continually inspired by
their courage, spirit and love of life!
Enjoying time with the campers at the Holiday
Reunion Party.
2012 proved to be another wonderful summer for the children. They
enjoyed many special activities at the camp and around town, including
a wonderful fishing trip on the Peconic Bay, tennis lessons by friends from
the Meadow Club, a day at the North Sea Carnival, outings to Cooper’s
Beach, excursions to the Riverhead Raceway and visits from the
Southampton Animal Shelter. Other favorite activities include The Rotary
Club Luncheon; our Fourth of July Party with face painter Rainbow
Rosie and a video arcade by Game Street Party; floral design by the
Bridgehampton Florist; and fire juggler Keith Leaf.
We continue to grow our Alumni Program, offering on-line resources to campers that focus on opportunities for independent
living, college and employment for people with physical disabilities. Our hope is to mentor, inspire, encourage and provide tools
and information to help prepare them for life after SFAH. This program is run by several former campers who have gone on to
success in college and beyond, and who have credited their time at the Fresh Air Home as the driving force in preparing them
for the many challenges ahead. A special thanks to our Alumni Program Directors Kathleen Downes, Cara Liebowitz and Yomi
Wrong.
We held our second annual Alumni Day at the camp in July and a Holiday Reunion party in December. Over 100 guests - campers and their families -- came to Southampton for a memorable day of friends, fun, food and a visit from Santa. We
continue to have our retreat weekends where campers get to enjoy autumn and spring with friends in Southampton. All of these
new programs allow the wonderful friendships that begin at camp during the summer to continue to flourish as they become
young adults, and beyond.
As I complete my first year as President, I want to take a moment to say a special “Thank You” from the entire Board of
Directors to my predecessor, Kim White, who served as President for three years. Kim’s love for the children, and her dedication
to the Home and its mission helped to guide us through several difficult years with great success!
Next spring, we look forward to unveiling the School House, now under restoration thanks to the generous
support of Pam and Bill Michaelcheck, the Knapp/Swezey Foundation and RBC Wealth Management.
Southampton continues to be a welcoming home away from home for our children. Our local businesses,
neighbors and our cherished volunteers are vital to our success. I cannot thank you enough for all of your crucial, generous
support that allows us to continue our mission of providing this much needed retreat and respite to so many deserving children
and their families.
Sincerely,
Michaela Keszler

This year, Ellen L’Esperance
celebrates her silver anniversary on the
Board of Directors of the Southampton
Fresh Air Home. Ellen joined the board
in 1987, and has served as a dedicated
director for the past 25 years. Ellen first
came to the Home as a volunteer,
helping with one of the Home’s fundraisers.
She recently recalled her first experience
– a meeting at the home of Millie Brinn.
There were many ladies in the room, so
many that some were sitting on the
floor. They were all there to get their job
assignments.
Back in her early days the Tea Dance
at the Meadow Club was the big
fundraiser, but the event became
difficult, so they had to devise something
to change the fundraising events.
Barbara McEntee and Ellen were charged
with finding a new venue. They went to
the Omni, and there was a big room at
the Jitney station that is now a gym. "We
held a dance with an auction," Ellen
recalled fondly, "that was really a lot of
fun."
There was also the rummage sale
that raised a lot of money for the Home.
It was held in the Southampton High
School Gym and Auditorium. "We sold
shoes, coats, and clothes. Everyone
worked at these events." The rummage
sale then went on to become the D-D-D.
"The McEntee Picnic was very
popular. I found myself one year
running the Picnic. That was so great.
We had very elaborate food, a big raw
bar that was extremely popular. We all
sat out on the beach and watched the
fireworks from there. Then, as it grew
bigger and bigger, and we found out
about the piping plover, we moved it
onto the front lawn."
Ellen commented that over the years,
the Home "just kept getting bigger and
better. We added so many talented
people to the Board who donated
their expertise. They all commit to these
children, in so many ways. It is a
common goal that we all have.”

having the chance to be hands on with
the children has been such an important
part of Ellen's long term dedication.
"Everyone I bring up to the Home is
awestruck. That our children who have
not been blessed with great health can
have such a wonderful time and enjoy
each other and be so happy makes all
the hard work worthwhile. And the
counselors are so outstanding. I marvel
at how they help our children enjoy their
time here."
Ellen studied political science at
Columbia University, and went on
to become a teacher of mentally
challenged children in the New York City
school system. “I love children, which
probably explains my connection to the
camp.” Ellen has also worked as an
interior designer and has owned a
contemporary art gallery and design
firm, The Saxon Gallery.
In 1991, then President Claire
Mulholland asked Ellen to be Treasurer.
"It was at this time we decided to put
everything on computers. Prior to this,
everything was hand written, and we
13
relied on whatever help we could get.
But as the fundraising events grew, we
were getting into bigger numbers. It
wasn't just a rummage sale anymore.
We were getting good funding, and we
ultimately hired an outside accountant to
help set up this new computerized
accounting system.
No one ever
expected the success of the D-D-D. It
was such a big surprise!"
In 2000, Ellen became vice
president under Barbara Smith.
"Barbara was an amazing President. She
brought a great business sense to
everything the Home did. She had the
right energy to move to many of the
Board members together." It was during
this time that the Home started the Men’s
Committee. Her husband, Dr. Francis
L'Esperance Jr, gave advice during the
construction of the pool. "Fran had been
a lifeguard for many years and he was
able to help out. He also helped to raise
funds for this and other special projects
over the years."
Ellen often would bring her
children up to the Home because it was
so important to her. Now, she says it is
such a thrill to bring her grandchildren.
This past summer her granddaughter
Winston enjoyed helping and working
with the children, preparing for the prom
and giving tennis lessons. "She just loves
it." Ellen's daughter-in-law, Ros, also
serves on the Board. Ellen believes "it is
the future of the home getting new
people interested all the time, passing it
down from generation to generation."
Ellen added: "I just hope the home
continues to be very successful. We are
going to have financial challenges. I
think that with the quality of our Board
who can direct the Home, we will be
able to skirt those issues and we can
continue on. I’d like to see the home
used more than just the summer. All the
additions we made with Bricks and
Mortar will hopefully allow us to be able
to have children at the Home year
round."

SFAH Mission Statement
The Southampton Fresh Air Home is a not-for-profit residential camp for physically
challenged youth. Our mission is to provide an enriching, recreational camping experience.
Through a broadly balanced program, we are committed to helping our campers develop
physically, emotionally, and educationally, with the goal of fostering self-esteem, maturity and
independence, while providing their families with a well-deserved respite.
The organization is dedicated to improving and expanding its programs and facilities as
new opportunities, technology and financial support become available.
