Where Innovation Meets Inspiration Tuftonboro Free Library August 13, 2014 Company Profile: Sheerr McCrystal Palson Architecture, Inc., specializes in high quality, one-of-a-kind municipal, commercial and institutional projects. Founded in 1983, our firm continues to garner recognition for outstanding building projects and enjoys an excellent reputation for delivering high quality construction documents and providing personal service. Our goal is to combine a high level of thoroughness, professionalism and design sophistication with the ability to get the most value for our clients' dollars. We are committed to buildings that fit their settings, are thoughtfully designed and are energy efficient environments you want to live and work within. By listening closely to our clients needs we develop buildings that serve the organization as a functional tool; enabling better networking, increasing productivity and helps to serve the communities they represent. The Carriage House, home of SMP Architecture We do all this through an inclusive team approach to our overall project management system. Ultimately this is what keeps our clients happy and informed while sparing them anxiety which is sometimes present in a construction project while saving them time and money. Hopefully you will see from this qualification package that SMP has significant experience working with Library’s and their Trustees. We are in fact most noted for our Library projects; which represents our largest single portfolio item. As such we are well versed in library trends, needs, space allocations, policies / procedures and sometimes the political and community issues which can arise. With our years of experience and eleven successful past library projects we believe SMP is well positioned to assist you in the development of a new facility. “Our experience with Sheerr McCrystal Palson Architecture was highly positive and successful. Where Innovation Meets Inspiration Tuftonboro Free Library August 13, 2014 Ability to Perform: SMP Architecture and Eric Palson have decades of experience programming, planning and designing library facilities. Jason LaCombe has 16 years as an architect as well as 2 years as a construction manager and field engineer. This combined knowledge makes the SMP team confident and capable of performing for your project. Furthermore, this insight allows us to proactively address potential issues before they have cost or schedule implications. Current experience: We are in the pre-design phase for the Exeter Public Library and Barrington Public library and are also supporting Enfield in their capital campaign. SMP just completed an all new library facility for the Town of Durham NH. This 12,600 sq ft state-of-the-art facility meets and in some areas exceeds the space and needs and came in within their allotted budget. Eric presented at the NH Library Trustees Annual Conference. He spoke on the process of assessing an old existing library preparing for a renovation and expanded use. We are very familiar with the typical needs, sizing, and programing of a community library. In addition we are experienced with the political / approval process required for a successful vote and feel there is sufficient time in this calendar year to achieve your goals. Where Innovation Meets Inspiration Tuftonboro Free Library August 13, 2014 Our Firm’s Values: Sustainability: Sustainable Design is a core value for SMP Architecture. We incorporate Sustainable thinking throughout the design and construction process with the goal of delivering a high performance building that creates a healthy environment to live, work and learn in. We select construction materials that offer the highest degree of sustainability by their superior recycling characteristics, reduced negative impact on the environment, energy efficiency, low maintenance, and reduced life cycle costs. Communication: As with any quality business, honesty, integrity, trust and good communication are important. We work hard to present your project to the committee and interested parties through 3D renderings, colorful images, public appearances and simple clear language. SMP Architecture has continually maintained extremely high standards, it influences our approach to design, to work, and to our relationships with clients and teammates. We look forward to working with you and showing you first hand how wonderful this process can be. Preservation: We are proud members of the NH Historical Preservation Alliance and assist many private property owners, churches and municipalities with Historical Assessment Reports and sympathetic restoration of their buildings. We frequently reference the guiding document: The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties with Guidelines for Preserving, Rehabilitating, Restoring and Reconstructing Historic Buildings Page 8 Sheerr McCrystal Palson Architecture Inc. Where Innovation Meets Inspiration Tuftonboro Free Library August 13, 2014 Engaging the Public to Communicate Value: Being a public Library; you have active and engaged members, Friends of the Library, a Board of Trustees, and you have the community who will ultimately be asked to approve the expenditure for the construction. Engaging the public is key to this success, but it should not be an after thought; it does not occur at the end of the design; Engaging the public is part of the design process and starts day one, if not sooner. Based on the documents you provided it appears you have already begun and we congratulate you for taking that step. We will use this information as a starting point, the foundation for our work and build upon it. SMP prides itself on opening up our design process to the larger community and engaging people in a substantive way. We will work with the library to actively engage the public during development of the design. We do this through open house events, presentations, displays around town as well as a project website. In conjunction with the Town Staff we will create a continual cycle of information transfer; design sketches, public comments, revisions. Listening to the public and incorporating the comments is crucial; at SMP With the committees assistance SMP can: Organize and lead public open house events Conduct public presentations Development graphics for mailers and announcements Create Displays Assist in a social media campaign Plaistow Public Library The success of the project lies with providing the right information to the community; it starts with developing a design that meets your space needs and technical goals, embodies the spirit of your community, and is pragmatic in its initial cost and long term operating expenses. Value is what the voters will judge; it will be the metric our team uses to guide decisions and will be an important part of the communication to the public. Our challenge was to find a building form that was responsive to this handsome rural site, a 19th century farm complex, while still communicating the image of a library. The only high and dry site was somewhat concealed well back from the public street; the library also needed to have a real presence from the distance. Local granite, cedar shingles and rustic slab siding help tie the building to its agricultural neighbors. We were charged to come up with a new library building to replace their woefully inadequate and nonaccessible library. They asked us to consider the following: • Entry elevation as viewed from Main Street. • • • • • • • • Children’s Carrels Reading Area • A building that “looked like a library”. A relatively open plan with good visual control from a central circulation desk. Isolation of children’s area from adult areas. Space to accommodate twenty year’s worth of anticipated growth. An attached meeting room that could have independent operating hours. Good natural light. A very low-maintenance exterior. An exterior sympathetic to the nearby 19th century buildings along Main Street. A convenient, out-of-the-weather drop-off for buses and older patrons. A total project budget under $2 million. The original library was brick and brownstone Queen Anne style gem built to serve the two towns of Tilton and Northfield in 1885. The structure was little changed over the years, and was much beloved by the community. It had a strong and distinctive face that had become a local landmark. Unfortunately the building was tiny, with about 2000 usable square feet and a largely dysfunctional mechanical system. It was also shoehorned onto a triangular site, originally a sort of traffic island, now sharing access, drop-off and parking with the nearby elementary school. The first thing visitors comment on is the seamlessness of the space. You respected our wishes from the beginning, helped us get the package passed, saw us through many changes and voila!, designed us a beautiful library.” ~Mary Ahlgren, Add to the town’s landmark in a lowkey, manner. Tripling the available space on no land. Provide complete accessibility. Solve the traffic snarl between the library patrons, parents and school buses. Both the Library and the Town Offices are bursting at the seams and the existing building is outdated and inefficient. A renovation and expansion study was performed by our office but in the end the Town decided upon a new Library. Our current design is located on the existing parcel behind the current 1901 building and fronts on the Mascoma River. The new Library shares parking with the Town Offices and Police Department, also located on the site. The new Library is 2 stories, 7,600 SF, and designed to blend in with the local architecture. The design was based on LEED standards, including enhanced building insulation, geothermal heating and cooling and future PV panels on the roof. The project currently is in fundraising.
