Fall 2014 - Archbishop Curley Notre Dame

Fall 2014 - Archbishop Curley Notre Dame
“By our works, we show our Faith”
James 2: 16-18
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Our spiritual theme for the 2014-2015
school year at Archbishop Curley Notre
Dame is a call to action. The rich quote from
the letter of St. James reminded early Christians that through works
and actions our faith is best lived. This quote should resonate with
all students here at ACND. As a Catholic school our community
shows our faith by how we dress, act, study, work, serve and
compete. These works exemplify what our faith does for us as
individuals, as a Catholic community, but also what our faith
does to those with whom we serve and touch in the surrounding
community. Our schools have had such a rich tradition of
showing our faith through our actions inside and outside the
ACND community. This tradition lives on and becomes ever
more important to our mission as a school.

As we begin our next 60 years, we will concentrate on our works,
to show the community our FAITH through advancing the scholars
of tomorrow, forming championship caliber sports teams that
honor sportsmanship and competitiveness, and a nurturing soul
that caters to the individual and allows them to see the needs
of others around them.

As you know the cost of education has skyrocketed and the amount
of tuition charged fails to cover the needs of the Archbishop Curley
Notre Dame community. We ask that you consider a gift this year.
Your gift will enable the school to:

Offer critical financial assistance to deserving students.
Attract and maintain the best faculty and staff to serve
as role models.
Continue to build a state-of-the-art learning environment
by providing upgrades to labs, networks and technology.
Enhance the overall quality of our academic,
Campus Ministry and athletic programs.
Provide our Knights with the extraordinary experience
we had when we were students.
So I ask that you choose to make this the year that you make a
difference in the lives of Archbishop Curley Notre Dame students.
It is not the size of the gift that matters, but the number of
people who give.
May God bless you and your families and Archbishop Curley
Notre Dame.
Very truly yours,

Prep proudly boasts resurfaced 78 foot tennis courts and soon, six new benches and aluminum bleachers!
“We are pleased to receive this endorsement
by the USTA as we move forward with our
goal to enhance our middle and high school
tennis program, plus offer a community
tennis summer camp accessible to
low-income families,” remarked Douglas
Romanik.

2014-2015 School Year Highlights.
We’ve had a great start to the 2014-2015 school
year. Here are some school news highlights:
During Faculty Planning week, our teachers were busy preparing for
the new school year and ACND’s second year utilizing the 1 to 1,
individualized learning. The week ended, however, with a bit of fun!
ACND warmly welcomes Jim Ranieri as the new Coordinator of Student Services and Campus
Ministry and Director of Enrollment Management. Mr. Ranieri holds a BA Psychology and M.Ed
School Counseling from the University of North Florida; a M.Ed Educational Psychology from
the University of Florida; and M.P.S. in Youth Ministry from Loyola University, New Orleans.
“As a teacher I can build on the college prep academic rigor that is already in place and as Campus Minister I can help further
develop our faith community through daily prayer, retreats, and showing my faith through my work,” he commented. “Service
is such a vital part of Catholic education because we are not just teaching students about the faith, we are teaching them
how to live it.”
Clermondo Erisme has been awarded the Archbishop Favalora High School Scholarship Fund. He is a proud
member of our work/study team. He is a member of the cross country and soccer teams, and sings for
the school choir. Clermondo is always a positive presence around the campus, ready to help the community
in any way asked. He enjoys photography and took a course at the Little Haiti Cultural Center.
Tracey Dominique has been awarded the Msgr. Vincent Kelly Scholarship. In December, 2013, Tracey
received the Unstoppable Scholar Award from Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.
Because of her outstanding work in the community, she was selected by CBS4 Miami to be
featured on the show “Super Kids” that aired on March 31, 2014. It can been seen at: http://miami.

On Thursday, August 28th, Archbishop Thomas Wenski welcomed
students, alumni, faculty and administration at Notre D’Haiti Catholic
Church for the Opening School Mass. In his homily, the Archbishop
said: “For more than 60 years Archbishop Curley-Notre Dame has
existed to help young people be not only good students but also good
disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. To become a disciple is to set out,
as I said, on a great adventure with Jesus who calls us each by name
and says: “Follow me.” You could say that a Catholic school,
like AC-ND is called to be, should awaken within us the ability to hear
the Lord’s invitation to follow him and a Catholic school, with its
emphasis on discipline and character and excellence, should equip
us with the courage to act on that invitation – and thus to follow him
as we make our journey through life. It is how we respond to this
invitation that will determine the direction our lives will take.”

Faith in Action
He began his career as Freshmen School Counselor at the Frank Peterson Academy in Jacksonville
and worked from 2004 to 2010 at Trinity Catholic High School, Ocala (an ERC School) as Director of
Guidance and Admissions and until 2011, as Director of Campus Ministry and Admissions.
Mr. Ranieri would then spend one year working as Education Coordinator at the Costa Rican
Resource and prior to ACND, as Guidance Counselor for Pensacola Catholic School.
2014-2015 School Year Highlights.
In September, students from our French Honor Society and TEEM Clubs
volunteered for an event held by the Women's Breast Health Initiative. They went
into the North Miami community and scheduled free mammograms and heart
screenings for low-income women. The TEEM club is a science club, where
students who are interested in medicine,
environmental science, technology, and
engineering are able to volunteer and do
projects based on their interests.
ACND Prep received an $8,000.00 grant from the Catholic Negro-American Mission Board
(CNAMB) to assist with teachers’ salaries. CNAMB funds will be used to assist with teacher
training costs related to ACND’s 1 to 1 Individualized, iPad Learning Program.

Our Cross Country Team had a very successful year with many runners achieving
personal bests. Senior, Rhian Romanik qualified for States the second year in a
row and finished in the top 100 runners.
On October 24th the Curley Knights placed 1st
in the opening Epicure chess tournament held
at Miami Country Day School. The team was
led by Junior Christian Masseus who had 4
wins and 1 loss and tied for 2nd place in the
Scholastic Division.
Our sports and arts camp were very successful this year and
what a great campus we have to develop their
skills! We need your support by helping to share
the word about next summer’s camp. And, now
with new and improved tennis courts, we hope
to start a summer, youth tennis
program. The cost is only $100 with discounts
for multiple weeks enrolled. To know more,

Understanding the Individualized Learning Program
The “One to One” Individualized Learning Program
is flipping the classroom on its head as teachers
no longer lecture and students are responsible for
mastering class material through guided
independent study.
Teachers become coaches, first by laying out
academic goals, then helping each student write
his or her own Individual Learning Plan to
achieve those goals, and finally guiding the plan’s
implementation throughout the term.
Working hand in hand with the school, students
take control of their own learning while gaining
time management skills, strong study habits,
and confidence.
Rather than sitting back during lectures, students
discover the information on their own, and have
instant one-on-one time with their teacher.
As they move from a teacher dependent model to
one where students are autonomous, teachers
are freed to tap into students individual learning
st y l e s , a n d st u d e n t s a re e n c o u ra g e d t o
incorporate areas of personal interest.
We are proud to be the
first Archdiocesan school
to implement this new
learning strategy.
Please consider a gift
today that will support
technology upgrades.
To watch the
“One to One” video
and make a donation,
visit www.acnd.net.
During regularly scheduled classes students
complete most of their homework, study in
groups, and give presentations. Grades are still
earned, essays written and tests taken as
students prepare for college.
Each student is issued an Apple iPad for 24/7
access to electronic books, internet resources,
and Qino, “cloud” storage for their learning plan
and grades. The portal Showbie allows paperless
submission of documents and homework.

ACND Heritage Day – Called to Communicate
The heart of the wise makes his speech judicious and adds persuasiveness to
his lips. - Proverbs 16:23
On February 4, 2015, we will be honoring alumni from Notre Dame Academy,
Archbishop Curley High School and ACND Prep who have answered the call to
communicate at our 5th Annual Heritage Day: Called to Communicate.
Many of our graduates have pursued communication careers such as
journalism, public relations, advertising, radio and TV broadcasting, and
community affairs. We invite these professionals to serve on an alumni panel
representing different decades and careers to speak about their professions,
share high school memories, and inspire our current students.
Many will be present in person and some in spirit. If you are interested in
attending this event or can share some information about your career
(even if you cannot attend), please fill out a brief survey found at
www.acnd.net under the Alumni tab.
We look forward to seeing you at
Heritage on February 4, 2015!

On October 26th, Swanee diMare ’65 was honored at the Archdiocese of Miami’s inaugural “Women of
Faith” awards luncheon. Swanee was one of 10 women to be recognized for involvement in parishes,
schools, fundraising efforts, special projects and ministries, not to mention community volunteerism.
“Swanee diMare is a pinnacle of faith put into action,” commented Douglas Romanik. “She is a model of
service to our school (and her alma mater, Notre Dame Academy for Girls) and one who serves selflessly
for many prominent, South Florida charitable organizations. She is an Honoree and, for many years,
has served as Honorary Chairperson for our school’s Hall of Fame Gala. Her vivacious personality is always
warmly welcomed by our inductees and their guests. And in addition to her service, Swanee and husband
Paul have generously supported ACND Prep’s endowment fund. We are thankful for their generosity
because, through these types of gifts, she inspires many others to give, and we are able to steadfastly
preserve more than 60 years of traditions while advancing our school into tomorrow.”

Calvin Rayburn ’10, who graduated from Barry University this year, was picked by the Philadelphia Phillies
in the 16th round of the 2014 Major League draft. Coach Jerry Yeash, who just completed his 32nd season
as head coach, was happy to receive the news. “Calvin began playing baseball at ACND after his freshman
year, but he developed very quickly. While watching one of Calvin’s Barry games, I remember sitting beside
a scout who had thought his radar gun might be broken. He couldn’t believe the pitch recorded 90!”

How Does Our Garden Grow?
This year our TEEM (Science) Club is planting a garden.
Their seeds will need the proper nourishment and care to
not only yield vegetables next year, but become sustainable
plants for many years to come.
As we look beyond 60 years, we must care for our cherished
Archbishop Curley Notre Dame just as the students will tend
their garden. There are many ways to give. Please visit,
www.acnd.net/GivingTree to know how you can make a
difference, or give us a call!
Reaching ACND’s 60th Anniversary marks another historical milestone. As we look back at our heritage founded on Faith, Family, Excellence,
so must we look forward and build towards our future. Renew your commitment to ACND today and help us work towards new milestones.
