MISSION OF THE MONTH: K4J VIRTUE: COURAGE All contents copyright © Creative Catholics 2013 MAY “BOOSTER BEAM” MISSION OBJECTIVES: • Teach kids to call on Jesus when uncertain or afraid. • Help kids understand that a parent can give encouragement necessary in a tough situation. When they accept encouragement, they grow in COURAGE. • Help kids realize that they can give others encouragement, too! • Each time we have the courage to STAND STRONG for Jesus, those around us are encouraged to STAND STRONG too! Ready... You will need: • K4J Mission Song, “BOOSTER BEAM” & CD player • May pre-K4J Send-It-Home Packs • Booster Beam glasses, found in the packs EDUCATORS: We pray to Jesus to find COURAGE to do what is right! We can also help children learn to STAND STRONG for Jesus when we enCOURAGE them. They can learn to do the same for others! We tell the children to BLAST OUT “Booster Beams” of enCOURAGEment to everyone they meet. EnCOURAGEment is a great way to help each other STAND STRONG for Jesus! K4J Virtue: COURAGE I always STAND STRONG for Jesus! I ask Jesus for his help. Say... Take a look at the cover of the May pre-K4J Mission poster with the kids. Give them a chance to talk about it and decide which character they would like to be. Let them know that the “C” on the kids’ suits means COURAGE. Give them the definition of COURAGE: We STAND STRONG for Jesus every time. We STAND STRONG for Jesus whenever we choose to do what is right, especially when it is hard. We ask Jesus for his help to do this. Have you ever needed COURAGE? Matthew is the preK4J character standing by the star on the poster. Matthew’s baby brother saw a scary shadow on the bedroom wall at home and was afraid. What could Matthew do to encourage his baby brother? Matthew could hug his brother, Matthew could make the shadow go away, Matthew could sing a song for his brother, Matthew could help his brother get to sleep, etc. Bring out the point that: When we help others, we become strong. We ask Jesus for his help to stand strong and love others for him. Go pre-K4J! Let’s put on our BOOSTER BEAM glasses and get ready to STAND STRONG for Jesus and help others. Are you ready? Teach the kids the “Shoot Booster Beams” cheer. SHOOT BOOSTER BEAMS! Leader: I’ll shoot Booster Beams of love all day long. Just shout, “KABLAM! Kids: KABLAM! (have the kids clap their hands once) …Jesus, make me strong!” (kids make muscles) Repeat several times, getting louder each time. MAY “BOOSTER BEAM” MISSION Pre-K4J “Send-It-Home Pack” CHAT: Show the Mission poster to the kids once again, and point out how the kids are BLASTING OFF with BOOSTER BEAMS of love to help Mom with the groceries. These kids are wearing BOOSTER BEAM glasses, just like yours. They are looking for ways to help. They have asked Jesus to make them strong, and he is sending them! Wear your Booster Beam glasses at home each day, and look for ways to STAND STRONG for Jesus and help others! KABLAM!! Each day you STAND STRONG for Jesus and help others, you may mark your poster with a sticker! Be sure the glasses are returned to the packs, then send the packs home! Now sing and perform the motions to the May “BOOSTER BEAM” song. BOOSTER BEAM MAY K4J MISSION SONG Verse: WHEN WE STAND STRONG FOR JESUS WE ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO STAND STRONG TOO Flex muscles and stand very straight like a soldier Point at audience then cross your arms over heart Chorus: I WANNA BLAST A BOOSTER OF LOVE WHEREVER I GO Open & shut your hands like fireworks going off I WANNA BLAST A BOOSTER BEAM OF LOVE -HERE I GO, HERE I GO! March as you move your hands held together like a snake BE A BOOSTER BEAM OF LOVE Open & shut your hands like fireworks going off BE A BOOSTER BEAM OF ENCOURAGEMENT Cross your arms over your heart EVERYWHERE I GO, EVERYWHERE I GO March as you move your hands held together like a snake REPEAT VERSE REPEAT CHORUS MAY “BOOSTER BEAM” MISSION ObjectIves: • Preschoolers learn that they can call on Jesus when they are afraid or uncertain. • Preschoolers learn that they can help others have COURAGE by calling on Jesus for them. Ready... You will need: • The pre-K4J Pledge No other materials are required. Say... Have you ever been afraid of anything? I know someone who is always with you and will help you have COURAGE and be STRONG no matter what. Do you know who it is? Jesus! Jesus is bigger than anything that could scare us. Jesus is God. Whenever we have to do something new or whenever we are afraid, all we have to do is to ask Jesus to give us COURAGE and make us STRONG and KABLAM!, he is there helping us. Sometimes Jesus makes us STRONG by sending us people who help us like our parents to teach us. Jesus also gives us his own power that helps us called GRACE. Has Jesus ever sent YOU to help someone else have COURAGE and become STRONG? Have you ever helped someone who was afraid? In K4J, when you help someone be STRONG, we say you are shooting BOOSTER BEAMS of love! You are giving someone COURAGE. When we see someone who needs Jesus, we say, Leader: I’ll shoot Booster Beams of love all day long. Just shout, “KABLAM! Kids: KABLAM! (have the kids clap their hands once) …Jesus, make me strong!” (kids make muscles) Repeat several times, getting louder each time. MAY “BOOSTER BEAM” MISSION Go Pre-K4J! 11 12 1 2 10 9 After prayer, say the preK4J pledge. Remind the kids that we are going to ask Jesus to make us STRONG. Help me remember to ask you for help whenever I am afraid or not sure what to do. MAY “BOOSTER BEAM” MISSION Classroom BulletIn Board Blast Booster Beams! Cover the board in a bright paper. Place the Booster Beam Team pattern in the center of the board. Make more Booster Beams to fill the board by making stars out of aluminum foil or silver gift wrap and attaching a cluster of different colored curling ribbon tails to each. At the top of the board, write, “Jesus Gives Us Courage!” At the bottom of the board write, “KABLAM!” K4J SurprIse! “Get ready, kids. It is time for a K4J Surprise!” Sometime in the middle of the month, the teacher, a parent or K4J Captain gives the kids a boost of motivation with a K4J Surprise! COURAGE Space Suits Add COURAGE Space Suits to your dress up center. Old superhero costumes will work great. Just put a “C” on the chest and give the kids BOOSTER BEAM glasses, included in the packs. Booster Beam Messages Make copies of the Booster Beam Note pattern and allow the kids to use them to “make their own” messages of encouragement for others. KABLAM! Play the song, BOOSTER BEAM from the Year 2 K4J Mission songs CD. Have the kids line up and walk through a simple obstacle course in the room. This can be done by having them weave in and out of a row of chairs, crawl under a table, etc. Stop the music at different intervals. Each time the music stops, the kids have to shout, KABLAM! and FREEZE! You say, “Jesus makes us strong” and start the music again. SCRIPTURE SCHOLARS “Have COURAGE, be stouthearted – wait for the Lord!” Psalm 27:14 Have the kids line up on one side of the room with their eyes closed. Say the Scripture verse. Now pause, then say, “Take one giant step” (or any other movement). Each time they do the movement, have them close their eyes again and repeat the verse before giving them another action. By the end of the game (reaching the other end of the room), encourage the kids to be saying the verse along with you. MAY “BOOSTER BEAM” MISSION Holy hero Copy this pre-K4J Holy Hero: St Joan of Arc story for each child. Go over the story with the kids. Read through it again, this time pausing for the children to fill in the picture words. Send the story home, and tell the kids that their “homework” is to tell the story to their parents! holy hero stories Pre-K4J Promise: We are apostles of JESUS! MAY “BOOSTER BEAM” MISSION May Dear K4J Educator, When trying to be a courageous apostle today, it is good to reflect on the lives of the first Apostles of Jesus. They were humans dealing with weakness just as we do. St. Thomas was ready to die with Christ when he was going back to Jerusalem with Christ to raise Lazarus from the dead, and yet he doubted after the death and even resurrection of Christ. Peter promised to stay with Jesus no matter what, then denied he even knew Jesus three times. What was it that made these men into saints? The Holy Spirit came on the Feast of Pentecost and began to live within them. The Holy Spirit enters our souls at baptism and lives within us. He is the one who gives us the courage to stand strong for Jesus no matter what. We need the graces and gifts the Holy Spirit brings in order to accomplish good through the work we do. At Baptism, we become sons and daughters of God and we have a duty to evangelize the world. We are answering that call in a concrete way through our work in K4J. Kids for Jesus is one tool that can be used by children, parents and educators to live our baptismal commitments each day. In order to live these commitments well, we must have lives of prayer and receive the sacraments. Everything we do should flow from this life of prayer. Being an “apostle” should not be a compartment in my life that takes place once a week or once a month. All of my work, social life, parenting, conversations, etc., are ways I live my apostolic duty to bring Christ to the world. When we live apostolic lives, we actually encourage others to do the same. This often happens without us even realizing it. As educational leaders, we have to have great courage. We want to transform the world, one soul at a time. In order to do this, we often have to fight against attitudes that work against our faith. Let’s be creative. Let’s think of ways that we can use the good that is in the culture to bring those in our care to the faith. When we have the courage to live our convictions as St. Thomas and St. Peter ultimately did, we encourage others to take part in acts that flow from the love that is Christ. In Christ, Kathleen Conklin Director of K4J MAY “BOOSTER BEAM” MISSION K4J Unity Prayer Jesus, thank you for calling me to your work in Catholic education. Thank you for calling others to work with me. Unite us in your will, Lord. Let our prayers storm heaven with one voice. Let our efforts be filled with your grace. Let our school work as one. Unite us in charity, Lord. Help me look beyond my feelings and love those who criticize. Help me forgive the moment I am hurt. Help my words reflect your thoughts. Unite us in our mission to serve these children, Lord. Give us a love for souls. Give us a zeal for souls. Give us the gifts that attract souls to you. Unite us in helping children hear your call, Lord. Call the children of our school to a greater love for you. I want to help them hear that call.
