Hall Of Fame Banquet a success
136 attend to welcome five new inductees
The annual NDASA Hall of
Fame banquet and induction ceremony scored another success as
three dozen members of the Hall
of Fame along with another 100
or more guests welcomed five new
members to the softball shrine. The
number increased the total membership to 271 since the Hall of Fame
was established in 1957. The banquet and induction ceremony was
held in conjunction with the annual
Spring meeting of the North Dakota
Amateur Softball Association on
Saturday, April 23 at the Gladstone
Inn in downtown Jamestown.
The five new members are Kyle
Christensen of Glen Ullin; Jeff Burgess of Bismarck who was elected
posthumously; Jon Kegel of Fargo;
Michele Paul of Bismarck and
Larry Bellerud of Fargo. The event
began with an open bar at 4:30 p.m.
followed by a buffet dinner and the
induction ceremony. The annual
banquet has continued to flourish
with good crowds of softball enthusiasts, friends and team mates
of the inductees. Local softball
associations are urged to also have
local ceremonies to honor the new
inductees.

President’s Report
As I write this letter I have just
returned from the 41st Annual
McQuade Softball Tournament. It
was another great success with 460
teams entering this year. We had
both the Wounded Warriors and the
US Air Force teams as this year’s
event. It still amazes me how well
this huge tournament is run each
year. That is a tribute to co-chairmen Jack Jones and Mike Wolf and
the many umpires and volunteers
that work this tournament all the
way down to the young ladies that
bring water to the umpires. It is
a total team effort from everyone
there. If you have never been to the
McQuade you need to go to at least
one to experience everything that
goes on at this monster event. And
the proceeds go to many different
charities throughout the State.
I have sent out the final classification sheets to all the League Reps.
Please get them sent out and sent
back to me right away. They are
due back to me by July 1st. (and the
means you too Reino!!) We need
these in as soon as possible as the
Classification Meeting is July 8th
in Jamestown. State entry fees must
also accompany this Classification
breakdown. And this is a reminder
that the State entry fees have gone
up this year to $225 for Class D
and above. It is $175 for all other
classes and the Masters teams.
The State Tournaments are just
around the corner with the Masters
50- both Metal and wood bat, along
with 60 Masters starting things
off on July 23-24 all in Mandan.
Make-up teams are permitted in
the Masters State tourney. You
just need to be on another NDASA
roster. Here are the current rules
for the Masters pick-up rules for
State. Masters 35 Div-1- can pick
up any player regardless of class.
Masters 35 Div. 2- pick-ups must
be Rec.1 or lower. And Masters 35
Div. 3- pick-ups must be Rec. 3-4
only. In the Masters 40 Div. 1- any
class can be picked up. Masters
40- Div.2- pick-ups must be Rec.
2 or lower. All other pick-up rules
apply. Pick-ups must be NDASA
rostered players. You can pick up a
maximum of 2 players, with a maximum of 12 players total including
pick-ups. Players must meet the
age requirements. Masters 50 can
pick up 3 players, with a maximum
of 20 players total, any class, and
must meet age qualifications.
Mandan is hosting the MSP
Masters 35 National Tournament
this year on Aug 26-28th. There
will be 2 divisions- competitive and
recreational. Competitive will have
no limits regarding player classification. Recreational will have a
maximum of 3 Class D players- NO
player above a Class D. Entry fee
is $450- but if paid by Aug 1st it
is only $350. NDASA will allow
makeup teams for this event. North
Dakota players must have been on
a roster of teams that have played
in a State tournament . Make-up
teams must pay a $70 registration
fee to NDASA.
The pick-up player rules are the
same for the rest of the Class teams
that are going to State. Teams may
pick-up a maximum of 2 players
and cannot have more than 12 players total including pick-ups. Pickups must be from the same class or
lower than the team picking them
up. Pick-up players must wear the
uniforms of the highest classified
team with which they are rostered.
A State tournament pick-up form
must be turned into the tournament
director prior to playing the first
game. Pickup forms must be signed
by the teams League Rep or a State
Official. Both pickup players( if
there are 2) can be on the same
form this year, but must be signed
off individually.
Have a great rest of the season
and good luck to all the teams going
to State and National tournaments .
See you around the diamonds.

Some Thoughts By Walt
Already past the middle of June
and so far I have not umpired a
game. I had to take last year off
due to a bad hip but was looking
forward to coming back this season.
I went to the first meeting held by
our local umpire association, registered with ASA for the season but
you know what they say about the
best laid plans –this time a stomach
virus coupled with a revival of
some old ulcer trouble took me out
of play for several weeks. Spent
some time in the hospital in early
May, took several tests and am just
now feeling like I may still be able
to get in a couple of games. I’m
starting to think I may be too old to
consider umpiring. Anyway, we’ll
see how it goes the second half of
the season.
Now for some good news. We
had another great crowd at the
annual Hall of Fame Banquet and
induction ceremony. Thirty seven
Hall of Fame members attended to
congratulate five new members:
Jon Kegel of Fargo, Michele Paul of
Bismarck, Jeff Burgess of Bismarck
who was elected posthumously,
Kyle Christensen of Glen Ullin and
Larry Bellerud of Fargo. Congratulations to each of these very worthy
new members. Also featured at
the banquet was a Distinguished
Service award presented by State
Commissioner Dick Gulmon to
long time state secretary Shirley
Schafer of Jamestown. Shirley
s has been a fixture in North Dakota softball since she and her late
husband Duane “Tiny” Schafer
moved to Jamestown in 1960 when
Tiny was named State Softball
Commissioner, a job he held for
36 years, ably assisted by Shirley.
She handled most of the paperwork
necessary to keep the Association
operating . She certainly earned
and deserved the award.
This issue of the Softball News
won’t go out until after the McQuade Tournament is over but if
the weather co-operates it should
be another great event. As of this
date, 460 teams have signed up for
the 41st Annual tournament. Special
events will include the Wounded
Warrior softball tournament who
made such a great impression two
years ago when they made their first
appearance at the tournament. An
All AirForce team is also scheduled to appear and will participate
in exhibition games as well as the
regular tournament.
Mandan will again host the Men’s
Masters 35 National tournament in
late August. This tournament was
originally set for Mississippi but the
host city turned it down due to lack
of team interest. ASA officials then
asked Jack Jones our Assistant State
Commissioner if Mandan would
be willing to host on short notice.
After receiving several concessions from ASA the tournament is
set for August 26 to 28 in Mandan.
Two separate tournaments will be
held, one recreational and the other
competitive. The conditions are set
out in a separate story in this issue.
Mandan has a history of hosting
successful National tournament
events. They drew the largest field
of teams in the country when they
hosted the Men’s E/Rec tournament
in 2014. They also successfully
hosted the Men’s Master’s 40 in
2009 and the Men’s Master’s 35 in
2012. They will also serve as the
tournament host for the Men’s E/
Rec tournament in 2017.
Also in this issue, you will
find an article about the Fargo/
Moorhead Hall of Fame, which is
brainchild of Sharon Morgan. She
tells me that the Fargo/Moorhead
area has over 80 softball people
in the state Hall of Fame and she
is determined to establish the first
city or area Hall of Fame to honor
those recipients in their home area.
Dedication and induction ceremonies for the first class to be installed
will be on Saturday, August 20 at
the new Northern Softball Complex
in Fargo.
Hope to see you around the
diamonds.
by the end of the year. I also want
to thank Billy Schmidt of Bismarck,
and Scott Lafond of Dickinson,
for leading their organizations and
supporting youth fastpitch softball
in their towns.
I need to mention that ASA, at
the national office, has switched
carriers for background checks for
both umpires and youth coaches.
This year there have been a number of umpires and coaches, from
North Dakota, that have failed their
back ground checks. In a couple
of cases, the individuals have appealed ASA’s decisions and have
been reinstated. However, other
individuals should not be allowed at
all to coach in youth sports. Everyone needs to have their background
checked before coaching or sitting
on a bench, thru registerasa.com. I
feel this is a service, we have to
have, in order to have a successful
organization. Despite the pain, ASA
seems to be on track for protecting
our youth in North Dakota.
I look forward to seeing all the
teams at the state tournament in
Grand Forks on July 15th, 16th and
17th. I want to thank both Terry
Bohan and Charlie Makovsky for
working with Grand Forks youth
fastpitch on putting on this year’s
state tournament. I also want to
thank Pat “the Rock” Healy for recruiting and scheduling the umpires
for this year’s event.
Items to think about in the future,
is again splitting the state tournament into 2 weekends, adding an
8U state tournament, adding a
plus 18 year old state tournament,
and how can we keep growing the
sport. All interesting topics that
need discussion. Have a good rest
of the summer.

J.O. Fastpitch Update
The High School season was just
completed and congratulations go
out to both the West Fargo Packers
and Kindred/Richland. West Fargo
defeated Dickinson 6 to 2, and
Kindred/Richland defeated Grafton
8 to 6 in the Championship games.
This was Pat Johnson’s (West Fargo
coach) 8th straight year of winning
the High School championship.
Congratulations to both programs.
Both tournaments were held in
conjunction with the NDHSAA
baseball tournaments. The Class A
was in Jamestown and the Class B
in Fargo.
Dickinson’s Madison Jahner,
was named the North Dakota Gatorade player of the year. She plans
on attending the University of Mary
and looks forward to playing softball for the Marauders next year.
Next year’s NDHSAA Softball
tournaments will be held in Mandan
for the Class A, and Jamestown for
the Class B. The NDHSAA is on a
two year experiment, by placing the
softball and baseball in the same
towns, on the same weekend. We
will all have to wait and see, as
to the future for those tournament
host cities.
The NDASA Junior Olympic
teams, will again set a new record
for player registrations. Every
year I am amazed at the expansion
and growth of the sport, and the
commitment of the organizations.
I want to thank Thor Nelson, of
Minot, for expanding their traveling
teams, and they will be sending 10
teams to this year’s state tournament in Grand Forks. Also, I want
to thank Vance Christianson, of
the Moorhead Crush, for leading
his organization to North Dakota
ASA. They have added over 130
new players to NDASA. Bismarck,
Dickinson and Minot are once again
the programs that have the most
registered players. Each organization will be right around 300 each

Ump Chat
Another softball season where
the summer just seems to fly by especially now that McQuade weekend has come and gone. However,
there is a lot of softball left to play
with state tournaments starting July
15th and run through August 20th.
We have another national tournament in North Dakota this summer.
Mandan will be hosting the Men’s
35 Masters National Tournament
over Labor Day weekend. We
are hoping for a great turnout for
this tournament. This tournament
is a great opportunity to play in a
national championship—something
not many players will be able to say
they did once their playing days are
over. So, be sure to take advantage
of this great opportunity! There is a
Rec division and an upper division
which will allow more teams to be
involved. There is a discount for
early registration!!
We have several North Dakota
Umpires working national tournaments once again. I have been
working with UIC’s from around
the country to exchange umpires
for national tournaments. When
umpires travel to other regions of
the country, it is a great opportunity
to showcase their talents outside
of their local areas. I have been
assigned to serve as the UIC for
the Men’s 35 Masters National in
Mandan and Elliott Gerhardt and
Terry O’Clair will serve as Umpire
Coordinators.
We have an impressive fifteen
ND umpires going to various
national tournaments across the
United States this summer! As of
the date of this publication, congratulations and good luck to the
following umpires that have been
chosen to work national tournaments this year:

The 41st Annual Sam McQuade
Charity Softball Tournament is in
the books and we are hoping to have
raised more money to distribute to
local charities than we have ever
raised before! 460 teams travelled
to Bismarck and Mandan this year
and the McQuade Board of Directors would like to once again thank
everyone for their support! We
were blessed with great weather all
weekend long and we were grateful
for that!
We kicked off the tournament
in fine fashion with our annual
Military Appreciation game. The
Military appreciation game is held
to say “Thanks” to all military
personnel for all the sacrifices they
have made to defend our Country
and our freedom! We were fortunate to have the Wounded Warrior
Amputee Softball Team back and
they kicked off the tournament by
taking on local first responders from
the Bismarck Police Department,
Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department, Bismarck Fire Department
and the ND State Penitentary. The
second exhibition game Friday
night featured a mixed team of the
Wounded Warriors and the Unites
States All- Air Force Alumni team.
The local first responders, the
Wounded Warriors and the Air
Force team were great ambassadors
and did a great job in the two exhibition games.
The Air Force team also played
in the 35 Masters Upper Division
and came away as the runner-up
in the Masters 35 & Over division.
Both the Wounded Warriors and the
Air Force team were so impressed
by the McQuade Tournament that
they both want to come back to
the McQuade next year and we are
working on a way to do just that.
The McQuade Tournament held
its second annual cancer awareness
appreciation day which was capped
off with a Cancer Awareness Appreciation game on Saturday night.
The cancer appreciation game was
named the Connie Wolf Memorial Cancer Appreciation Game.
Connie was a long-time volunteer
taking care of the umpires. Connie passed away from cancer last
August.
There was a great crowd in attendance at the game with a lot of fans
dressed in pink. Three teams—
“Give 5 To Cancer,” “Schock Top,
and a women’s “Bud Lime” team
combined forces for a a very entertaining coed game. We received
many compliments for putting on
our cancer awareness appreciation
game and it will be back again
next year.
Everywhere we look, it seems we
all know someone whose lives have
been affected by cancer in some
way or another. So, we continue to
think that it is a good idea to honor
those who are suffering from cancer, have beat cancer, or have lost
their battle to cancer.
On Friday night we held a cancer
awareness ball toss to raise money
for cancer patients. Volunteers
worked the crowd selling baseballs
for $5.00 each and prior to the final
game of the night, everyone tossed
their ball towards a target in the
center of the infield. The person
who got their ball the closest to the
center of the target won $1,000.00.
The additional money raised will
go directly to cancer patients in the
form of gas cards and gift cards.
Thanks you to everyone who
participated! Your generosity does
make a big difference in people’s
lives! MANY thanks to Loren
Balkowitsch and his team “Give 5
To Cancer” for doing such a great
job selling the balls for the ball toss!
All the umpires also rallied to
support our cancer awareness appreciation day by wearing neon
blue and pink shirts and pink hats
all day Saturday. Thanks to many
generous sponsors who purchased
the pink shirts and pink hats for the
umpires. The umpires looked great
and they were very proud to support
the cancer awareness appreciation
day! Players and fans were asking
umpires for their shirts throughout
the day!
On Friday night BEK Communications broadcast the two exhibition
games live on statewide TV. It
was the first time something like
that has been done in the history
of the tournament. We received
many positive comments about the
coverage from several people who
were unable to get to the diamonds
to watch it in person but were able
to watch it on TV.
Another big highlight of the
McQuade Tournament was our
annual exhibition game of Special
Olympic athletes. The Special
Olympic athletes from Bismarck
and Mandan put on quite a show for
the large crowd of fans that gathered to watch them play. Watching
them play puts a lot of things into
perspective, especially when you
see just how much fun they have,
the excitement they show, and the
enthusiasm of cheering for each
other and not caring who wins.
The Special Olympic athletes were
decked out in fancy softball jerseys
that were donated by Mark Weber
from TYJA Sports. It was fun to see
how proud the athletes were of the
jerseys they were wearing!
I would also like to thank all of
the volunteers and volunteer groups
that help make this tournament so
successful! Without their help, we
could not run a tournament of this
Mike Wolf
Umpire in Chief
magnitude. Another group I need
to thank are all of the umpires
who worked the McQuade tournament. I had 115 umpires this year.
Whether it is a local umpire from
Bismarck or Mandan, or umpires
from somewhere in ND, or umpires
who travel from out of state to the
tournament paying their own way
to get here, every umpire makes
many sacrifices to help make our
tournament successful. In addition, every umpire who worked the
tournament donated back game fees
to the tournament and many of our
local umpires donate many of or
all of their games that will be used
to help support the many charities
that benefit from the tournament. I
received many compliments on the
quality of umpiring at every level.
All the umpires should be proud of
their efforts. Thanks again to all of
the umpires for their dedication and
commitment to the McQuade Tournament. We couldn’t do it without
you!!! I’d like to also thank all the
teams, fans, and volunteers for the
important roles they play in the success of our tournament. Without the
combined efforts of umpires, teams,
fans, and volunteers, we could not
hold an event of this magnitude!!
Thank You!!
The McQuade Board would like
to thank NDASA Commissioner
Dick Gulmon for his presence at the
tournament. Dick is a great ambassador for softball and the tourna-

Commissioner’s Column
I just returned from the 41 st.
annual McQuade Charity Softball
Tournament and once again it was
a huge success. A special treat this
year was the return of the Wounded
Warrior Amputee Softball Team.
They are indeed an inspiration to all
of us and a favorite of the fans. The
McQuade is the largest non-profit,
one weekend tournament in the
United States. The tournament was
founded in 1976 by Sam McQuade
Sr. of McQuade Distributing. The
tournament has grown from four
divisions in 1976 and 103 teams
to fifteen divisions and 460 teams
in 2016. In 2015 the tournament
raised over $100,000 for charities.
It is truly amazing work by the
McQuade Board of directors and
the many volunteers who make it
possible. I would like to personally thank and congratulate Sam
McQuade Jr., Shannon McQuadeEly, Mike Offerdahl, Jim Janusz,
Cheryl Jones, Jack Jones, Eldie
Ulmer, and Mike Wolf for their
great work and success again this
year. I would also like to thank Jack
Jones and Mike Wolf who serve as
tournament directors. It is a huge
undertaking and these gentlemen
are two outstanding people who
are very dedicated to the McQuade,
and NDASA/ASA-USA Softball. It
was great to have a several softball
friends from ASA/USA Softball to
the McQuade this year. State Commissioner from Florida Carlton
Benton, Mid America UIC Dave
Epperson, Northern UIC Steve
Riswold and Rich Cress from the
ASA/USA National Staff were at
the McQuade this year. It was also
great to see our Umpire friends
from all over the country this past
weekend as well. Again, great job
to all the volunteers who made a
difference for the McQuade Charity
Tournament in 2016.
The NDASA DeMarini Tournament Series is well under way with
twenty one tournaments included in
the series. Teams must participate
in three tournaments plus a State
Tournament to qualify for the prize
package. Thanks to John DeHaan
and Sam Martin for handling the
statistics for all the events.
The State Classification meeting
is scheduled for July 8th and State
Tournaments will start with JO GFP
in mid July. We have 25 adult State
Tournaments scheduled around the
state and 9 JO events. Also around
the corner is the ASA/USA Masters
35 National Championship to be
hosted by Mandan August 26-28,
2016. The Men’s SP Masters 35
Championship will have two divisions of play. The Competitive
Division will have no limits regarding player classification. The
Recreation Division will have a
maximum of 3 Class D players
and no players above Class D. The
event will be a double elimination/3
game guarantee and the entry fee is
$350.00 if paid by August 1, 2016.
Entries after August 1 is 450.00.
Contact Mandan Parks & Rec @
www.mandanparks.com for more
information. Don’t miss this opportunity to play in a ASA/USA
Softball National Championship
when it is this close.
The final State Tournament of
the season will be the COED Slow
Pitch Tournament in Fargo September 10 and 11th. We have appointed
Chris Hutton of Grand Forks as our
new COED Commissioner to work
with this tournament and the COED
program.
The ASA/USA Softball Council
meeting will be in Shreveport,
Louisiana November 12th -17, 2016.
A delegation from the Fargo Slow
Pitch Board of Directors will be
bidding on Slow Pitch events for
the 2018 season.
A special thanks to Walt Stack
who continues to do a wonderful job in making this newspaper
possible. Walt is a special friend
to all of us in the NDASA-ASA/
USA Softball family and we are so
grateful for his dedication to our
great sport. Thanks Walt.
Lastly, a special thank you also to
the many sponsors and volunteers
who make the NDASA Softball
program possible.

Terry O’Clair
Terry O’Clair of Bismarck has
been awarded Elite status as an
ASA umpire. He is only the tenth
North Dakota umpire to reach that
status.
After a long playing career,
O’Clair decided to stay in the game
as an umpire beginning his career in
1998. He has umpired four national
tournaments and met the requirements for Elite status by obtaining
excellent evaluations from tournaments supervisors.
The Elite category was created
in 2003 by the Amateur Softball
Association to award those umpires
who were recognized as the best of
the best. Currently, fewer than 500
umpires nationwide have earned
this award out of over 30,000 registered umpires. The requirements
are stringent: To obtain the Elite
ranking, an umpire must have umpired for at least seven years and
must have worked in at least four
national championship tournaments
all of which are rated as competitive
. These include Men’s Super and
Men’s Major; Men’s A and Men’s
B plus Masters 35 and Masters 40.
Women’s tournaments which also
qualify are the Women’s Open and
Major Co-Ed tournaments. An
umpire must earn a rating of Excellent from the Umpire in Chief
in at least two of the tournaments
which qualify.
O’Clair has recently started umpiring JO fast pitch softball. He is
the Vice President of the Bismarck
Umpires Association and credits
his umpiring success to mentoring
from Elliott Gerhardt and state
Umpire in Chief Mike Wolf.
Other North Dakota umpires
who are rated Elite are:
Naomi Erdahl, Bismarck (Fast
Pitch)
Elliott Gerhardt, Bismarck (Slow
Pitch)
Tom Harty, Jamestown (Slow

Bobby Larson, Minot (Fast
Pitch) Deceased
Walt Stack, Bismarck (Fast

number of participants in each sport
reported at the end of the school
year 2013-2014.
Fast pitch softball was officially
sanctioned by the High School
Association in 2008. In 2012
the current format was adopted
with separate Divisions for Class
A and Class B schools with state
champions named in each of those
divisions.
Leroy Elmer Olson 83, passed
away peacefully Friday, June 24,
2016 at the Hatton Prairie Village. He was born May 18, 1933
in Hamberg, North Dakota, the
only child of C.E. Olson and Neta
(Simms) Olson. He was a graduate of Buxton High School and an
Army veteran of the Korean War.
Leroy worked at the Buxton
Bank, Central Valley School driving school bus and during the
summers he drove truck for local
beet farmers.
He had a passion for sports,
particularly softball and UND
sports. He excelled as a fast pitch
softball player and played the game
26 years. He played both infield
and outfield but preferred pitching
where he accumulated approximately 400 lifetime wins. Despite
playing for what was classified as a
Class B team, he was asked to pitch
for a number of Class A teams in
tournaments around the area.
Leroy pitched in eleven state
tournaments and pitched his Buxton
team to the state Class B title in
1975 which was the same year he
retired as an active player.
He averaged 10 strikeouts per
game despite what he called a fairly
average fast ball. He relied on a
curve ball, a drop and a change-up
to keep batters confused.
Leroy Olson
Leroy continued his interest in
softball long after his retirement. In
1963 he organized the Grand-Trail
softball league composed of eight
teams from the valley. He served as
District Commissioner and playing
coach of the Buxton team. He also
organized and coached a boy’s Pee
Wee Team and also organized a
women’s slow pitch league. He
served also as a tournament director
and also umpired for several years.
He was a long time member of the
state Softball Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
He was a loyal supporter of UND
athletics and held season tickets for
a number of their sports.

The Fargo/Moorhead Softball
Hall of Fame is a new organization created to honor softball in the
Fargo/Moorhead area. According to
project sparkplug Sharon Morgan,
there are over eighty individuals
in the area who are already in the
state softball Hall of Fame and in
a formal statement of purpose the
new organization has the goal of
recognizing men and women who
have played a passionate role in the
growth and development of softball
in the Fargo/Moorhead area and
whose abilities, performance and
services were outstanding.
The Fargo/Moorhead Hall of
Fame will be located in a gazebo
at the Fargo Park Board’s new
northside softball complex. It will
display photos of Hall of Fame inductees, photos of F/M area softball
over the years and a list of building
sponsors. Players, coaches, managers, umpires and sponsors are all
eligible to be honored by the Hall
of Fame.
A Hall of Fame Council has been

Heartland rides surging offense
to McQuade championship
Mandan Heartland Investors teammates celebrate winning the ‘C’ division championship of the
McQuade Softball Tournament at Clem Kelly Complex.
Robert Reidell Bismarck Tribune
Men’s softball teams can be
almost impossible to stop when
they get on a roll, and the Mandan
Heartland Investors represent the
case study.
Heartland tore through the
men’s ‘C’ division bracket behind
a surging offense to claim a 45-26
McQuade Softball Tournament
championship victory over Fargo
3X Gear/The Box/The Ballyard at
Clem Kelley Complex.
“It’s a wonderful feeling, especially when you’ve had a run like
we have had,” Heartland sponsor
Eugene Graner said. “It’s been
fabulous.”
3X Gear, which lost to Heartland
27-4 on Saturday night, entered the
title game from the losers’ side of
the double-elimination bracket after
defeating Casper (Wyo.) Totem/Uptop 18-5. The team required backto-back victories over Heartland
to be crowned champions, but a
winner was ultimately decided after
just one offense-heavy matchup.
“This tournament brings a lot
of great teams in,” Graner said.
“They can all catch the ball, so the
important factor to winning a game
is to hit the ball where they’re not
standing. That has been our strength
for the entire tournament, hitting
the gaps.”
Heartland opened the game with
a 20-run first inning, which featured a pair of three-run home runs
and a grand slam. The team then
proceeded to post a 12-run second
inning, which included two more
three-run blasts to open up a 32-6
early advantage.
The offensive surge was to be
expected, as Heartland had scored
at least 20 runs in all five of its
previous games. In the past, the
opposition often rolled over after a
discouraging start, and Heartland
was able to blow by its foes without
much difficulty.
This was not the case for 3X
Gear, however, which quickly
turned the tide of the game with
a 20-run inning of its own in the
bottom half of the third frame. The
same matchup that had the makings
of a blowout after two innings of
play had quickly become a 32-26
contest, with Heartland having lost
all the momentum it gathered early
in the game.
“When they came out hitting,
we knew they weren’t going to roll
over,” Graner said. “This was going
to be a fight. It was just a matter of
finding those three outs and then
getting back in and responding that
inning.”
Heartland certainly responded.
Despite being without the ability to
hit the long ball due to tournament
rules allowing only five home runs
per team in a given game, the group
combined to score 13 times to create a 19-run lead and effectively tilt
the game back in its favor.
The second significant deficit
of the contest proved too much
for 3X Gear, as Heartland earned
its first McQuade championship
since 2012.
“This team does a lot of practicing outside of game time,” Graner
said. “They will get together and do
batting practice, and every member
of this team has come up being a
good fielder. The secret of this team
is we pick good fielders who have
an advantage at hitting as well.”
Heartland finished the tournament with 180 total runs in six
games, and its 45 runs scored
against 3X Gear was the secondhighest total recorded in the ‘C’ division. Aberdeen (S.D.) SD Circus
Bar/Lamont Co./Lust Auto scored
47 runs against Pierre (S.D.) Sunset
Bombers during its second game of
the tournament.
“Fielding needs to be a requirement, it’s the hitting that we develop and build on,” Graner said.
Winning a McQuade title is a
significant victory for Heartland,
but the team still has plenty more
to accomplish before its tournament
schedule comes to a close this fall.
“Coming up we’ll be heading to
Shakopee [Minn.] in early August,”
Graner said. “We have some weddings coming up here this month,
so it’s kind of throwing us off for
some tournaments we would like to
play. But, we still have several of
them toward the end of the year, and
then we’re going down to Panama
City, Florida to play in September.
“We’re not done. We’ve still got
some miles ahead of us.”
Recreation I
Saskatoon (Sask.) Crush defeated Bismarck MANN Energy

Fargo women defend title two of three
Steve Thomas Bismarck Tribune
There are more ways than one
to skin a cat, and Fargo Amundson
Farms-Tharaldson Enterprises
displayed one of the alternatives
on Sunday.
Amundson Farms survived a
brief detour into the losers’ bracket
to win the women’s C-D championship at the McQuade Softball
tourament. The Fargo team dashed
undefeated through the tournament
last season, but it had to do some
scrambling this time around.
After winning its first three
games, Amundson Farms was
upended 15-9 Sunday morning by
Toxic of Parker, Colo., in the winners’ bracket semifinal.
Nonplussed, Amundson Farms
outscored Silver Dollar-Rohly’s of
Aberdeen, S.D., 21-16 in the losers’
bracket semifinal. That earned the
Fargo team a rematch with Toxic
in the championship game, and this
time Amundson Farms didn’t miss
a beat. The defending champions
rolled over previously unbeaten
Toxic 18-2, 18-3 in a pair of games
decided by the mercy rule.
Toxic was Amundson Farms’ opponent in last year’s championship
game, as well.
Amundson Farms manager
DaLee Wilkinson said she was
impressed with the way her team
won three straight games with its
back to the wall.
“We played four games today,
three against Toxic, and they’re a
good team,” she said. “The teams
are so good here, and that makes it
really hard to come back and repeat.
I’m really proud of our team. They
played well together.”
Wilkinson had her fingerprints
all over this year’s championship.
She swatted five home runs in the
tournament. In the second title
game she cracked a grand slam
home run and finished with seven
RBIs. Amundson Farms walloped
two bases-loaded home runs during
an 11-run fourth inning that made
it 18-3.
All told, the Fargo team drilled
14 home runs in the tournament,
including slams by Wilkinson, Dori
Amundson and Andrea Charlebois.
They outscored their six opponents
81-33.
“We’re a pretty good home
run-hitting team. Three-quarters
of our team can hit it out,” said
Wilkinson, who connected for five
bombs herself.

a busy four-game Sunday.

seat by defeating Minot Knowles
Jewelry 20-2, Aberdeen Silver Dollar 16-14, Bismarck Moritz Sports
and Marine 22-18 and Amundson
Farms 15-9 before being derailed.
Aberdeen Silver Dollar placed
third and Omaha Damage Ink
claimed fourth.

Transport; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Nothin Flat and Wyndmere
Black Pelican captured championships in the women’s recreation
divisions.

Minot Bases & Banks 16-13 in the
championship game.
AutoMax trimmed Bismarck
Rock Point 24-8, Bismarck Blarney

Recreation II
Saskatoon Nothin Flat About the
Prairies put up a big number only
once, but still came out on top in the
32-team Rec II division.
The Canadians smothered Devils
Lake Thirsty’s Redbirds 7-1 in the
championship game. Earlier, they
downed Bismarck O’Brian’s-CVB
14-4, Bismarck Edson Construction

to capture the Rec III crown with a
24-14 triumph over the Fargo Silver
Dollar-Sexy Pigs.
Bismarck Lindell Law OfficeBorrowed Bucks gave Black Pelican all it could handle before dropping a 12-11 decision in the bottom
bracket semifinal.

Men’s Class D
You’ve got to have some sticks
to survive an opponent’s 13-run
inning, and Bismarck TB Financial
Group proved equal to the task.
TB Financial, staggered but not
floored by Grand Forks Ground
Round’s 13-run third inning, prevailed in the men’s Class D championship game at the McQuade
Softball tournament on Sunday.
Josh Oster lined a two-run home
run off the left field scoreboard as
TB Financial took the lead with a
four-run sixth en route to a 19-17
victory.
“I just told my guys ‘regroup,
let’s go,’” TB Financial coach
Mike Blair said, recalling Ground
Round’s third-inning eruption.
The Ground Rould rally consisted of 11 hits and two errors.
Oster socked a pair of two-run
shots to lead a balanced Bismarck
attack. Seth Blair added a two-run
home run and Casey Hausauer
blasted a three-run round-tripper. Hausauer and Oster knocked
in four runs each and Blair, Brian
Haugstad and Trevor Zacher plated
three runs each.
Ground Round got three-run and
solo homers from Chito Longoria
and a three-run blast from Andrew
Marek. Marek sent home five runs
and Longoria sent three men across
the plate.
All seven of the games’s home
runs cleared the left-field fence as
winds ranging up to 40 mph blasted
from the right field foul pole to the
left field pole.
The Bismarck team is in its
second year under TB Financial
sponsorship, but the core of the
team has been around for several
seasons.
“It was called Livewire Energy
before,” Mike Blair said. “About
eight of those players came over
and we picked up about six guys.
... Some of these guys have been
together four or five years.”
Since hooking up with TB Financial, Mike Blair said the team
has entered more tournaments, but
this is the first season this group of
players has reached the McQuade
finals.
“Last year we lost two games by
one run each,” he noted.
Oster, in his second year with
TB Financial, said the team broke
new ground on Sunday.
“This is the first tournament
we’ve won since I’ve been here,”
he said.
Likewise, Ground Round failed
to get into trophy territory last summer. The Grand Forks team lost its
first Sunday game.
Oster, who swatted six home
runs during the weekend, said batting in crosswinds ranging from 22
to 40 mph requires patience.
“It’s so tough to hit. You have
to wait for your pitch because the
wind is pushing the ball everywhere,” he observed.
Ground Round advanced to the
championship game in dramatic
fashion, Longoria blasting a gamewinning home run in the last of the
seventh inning to defeat Billings,
Mont., Jake’s-Frontier Stockyards
10-9. Earlier, Ground Round defeated Dickinson Players Sports
19-14, Bismarck Boulder Homes
20-11 and Minot Bases and Banks
15-13.
TB Financial defeated Valley
City Quality Alignment 12-8,
Bismarck Tainted Industries-Northwest Contracting 20-15, Bismarck
Custer Flats Trucking 28-17 and
Williston American Casing 14-4.
American Casing trimmed Billings Jake’s 14-4 in the third-place
game.
Minot Burgess Detailing downed
Bismarck Third Generation 19-9 in
the consolation final.

three men’s Masters divisions were
Mandan Coors Light (35-plus Ultra), Minot Wild Bill’s-BootlegrzBud Light (35-plus AmberBock)
and Mandan Dust-Tex (50-plus).
Masters 35-plus Ultra
Mandan Coors Light came out
of the losers’ bracket to defeat the
Washington, D.C. All-Air Force
Alumni twice for first place in the
six-team, double-elimination Ultra
division.
Coors Light, which lost 20-16 to
the All-Air Force Alumni in the first
round, won five straight to capture
the title. In the losers’ bracket, Coors Light defeated Beulah Alibi’sHazen Cenex 19-18, Fargo Burnn
Boiler 25-5 and Bismarck Oswald
Brothers Auto Repair 25-3 to earn
a rematch with the All-Air Force
Alumni.
In the finals, Coors Light handed
the All-Air Force-Alumni back-toback setbacks, 18-13 and 20-9.
Oswald Brothers placed third
and Burnn Boiler was fourth.
Masters 35-plus AmberBock
Defending champion Minot
Wild Bill’s-Bootlegrz finally found
its offense in the championship
game, defeating Bismarck Lucky’s
Bar-BNC National Bank 19-11 for
the title.
Earlier, Wild Bill’s had sqeezed
out wins over Valley City Handy
Hardware 9-8 and Mandan Action
Motor Sports 9-5.
Lucky’s reached the final in the
13-team division with an 18-6 victory over Mandan Shirt Shack-Bill
Barth and a 17-11 win over Mandan
Bowers Excavating.
Bowers Excavating defeated
Action Motor Sports 20-16 for third
place and Bismarck Integrity Landscapes trimmed Shirt Shack-Bill
Barth 19-8 for the consolation title.
Masters 50-plus
Mandan Dust-Tex outlasted defending champion Fargo Bellerud
Transportation 17-15 to claim first
place in the 11-team 50-plus Masters tournament.
Dust-Tex had smoother sailing in
its first two games, overpowering
Bismarck Kyle Herman Agency
20-0 and Fort Rice 16-2.
Bellerud Transportation reached
the championship game by virtue of
wins over Mandan Bowers Excavating 13-5 and Bismarck Mariner
Construction 10-1.
Mariner Construction bounced
back to defeat Fort Rice 16-2 for
third place. the Mandan Moose
edged Mandan Magi-Touch-Carpet
One 5-4 in the consolation final.

2016 Umpire Meeting – State Meeting
Submitted by Michael Wolf, State
Umpire-in-Chief
All of the District Umpire-inChiefs from around the state along
with State UIC Michael Wolf met in
Jamestown in March for their annual meeting. Also in attendance were
RC Courtright, NDASA Director
of Operations and Greg Kaeding,
NDASA Secretary/Treasurer. At the
state meeting in Jamestown in April,
the umpires and others in attendance
welcomed Tommy Borucki, UIC
from South Carolina who traveled
to ND to assist in conducting a field
clinic in Bismarck and then attended
the state meeting as a guest.
Mandan will be hosting the
Men’s 35 & Over Masters National
Tournament in 2016 and we are
hoping for a good turnout of teams!
We will start by assigning 18 umpires from around the state, region,
and country and we could assign as
many as 21-24 to the tournament.
Elliott Gerhardt & Larry Erickson
will serve as the umpire coordinators for this tournament and Michael
Wolf from Bismarck will serve as
the UIC. An Assistant UIC will be
assigned if teams in the tournament
exceed 40 teams.
We have worked out several
umpire exchanges with other states
around the country that will afford
the opportunity to send our umpires
out of the state in return for umpires
from another state to work in our
nationals. The umpire exchange
program we’ve developed is paying
dividends to our umpire program.
Umpires already assigned to national tournaments include:
Ben Birkemeyer from Bismarck
has been assigned to the ASA
Championship Series Tournament
in Oklahoma City, OK. Naomi
Erdahl from Bismarck has been
assigned to the Girls JO Cup Fastpitch Tournament in Atlanta, GA.
Tom Hamkens from Bismarck
has been assigned to the Men’s B
National Tournament in Oklahoma,
OK. Gerald “Shorty” Payne from
Emerado has been assigned to
work the Women’s Armed Forces
Tournament in San Antonio, TX.
Wade Blumhagen, Bismarck,
Paul Beech, Wahpeton, Marchel
Krieger, Jamestown, Mark Sandog,
Bismarck, Chris Coleman, Fargo,
Koby Pennick, Fargo, and Mike Nider, Bismarck have been assigned
to the Men’s 35 & Over National in
Mandan so far. Additional umpires
from Idaho, Minnesota, Montana,
Nebraska, Missouri, and South
Dakota will be assigned to this
tournament as well.
We will also be sending umpires
to Sioux Falls, SD for the 14U
ASA/USA Fastpitch Tournament.
Tentative umpires assigned so far
are Chad Mears from West Fargo,
Terry O’Clair, Bismarck, and Tom
Lawson, Donnybrook. Additional
umpires from ND will be assigned
to this tournament.
We are also working on securing spots for ND umpires in the
Men’s D in St. Joseph’s, MO. The
Men’s D in Red Wing, MN, Girls
JO Fastpitch in Rochester, MN, the
Women’s C/D in Sioux Falls, SD,
and the Men’s E National in Sioux
Falls, SD.
ASA has banned 18 Easton bats
and the umpires will be very diligent and making sure we get these
bats out of play. A list of those bats
appeared in the Softball News and
they are also listed on the NDASA
website. If you have one of the bats,
DO NOT BRING IT TO YOUR
GAMES! If you want to bring it to
have the umpire check it, you can
and if it is illegal, they will put a
big yellow sticker on the bat. The illegal Easton bats all have 2000 and
2004 ASA Certification Stamps on
them. Any Easton bats with a 2013
ASA Certification Stamp are all still
legal. The penalties will be served
if you are caught using one of the
illegal Easton bats (or any other illegal bat for that matter). Penalties
include ejection from the game, and
if in a tournament, ejection from the
remainder of the tournament and
NDASA will consider imposing a
1-5 year subscription of play.
We will continue to put orange
stickers on legal bats once again
this year. It has been a very successful program. DUIC’s will
coordinate with representatives
from their areas of the state to accomplish this task. We have big
yellow stickers to give to all the
umpires and as umpires run across
illegal bats, dented bats, or cracked
bats, umpires will put the yellow
sticker over the orange sticker So
if you see a big yellow sticker on a
bat, it is illegal.
Umpire registration fees for
the 2016 season have increased to
$45.00. In addition to classroom
rules clinics, our DUIC’s have been
conducting field clinics as part of
the umpire training process. Field
clinics have become a very valuable
tool in the umpire training process
and are currently being held in
several cities throughout the state.
These clinics have provided to be
very successful in the past and are a
great learning tool for umpires. The
clinics also a great tool for players
and managers to see the demonstration on the ten foot pitching arc.
We reminded umpires about the
changes in the jewelry rule that was
recently adopted. We’ve gone from
a zero jewelry policy to adopting
the national ASA rule which says
that jewelry will be removed if
deemed dangerous by the umpire.
So, the small religious medal chains
would now be legal. However,
earrings with posts, nose rings, lip
rings and rubber wrist bands should
still be removed or taped down.
Break away choker necklaces
would be OK. But remember, even
though the jewelry rule has been
relaxed somewhat, if an umpire
deems something dangerous, players have to tape it or take it off.
If you need to contact a deputy
umpire in chief in your area of the
state, or to contact the state UIC,
be sure and check out the NDASA
website at www.ndasa.org and click
on the umpire tab to find contact
information for all DUIC’s and
state UIC.
The umpire discussed implementation of a program to recongnize
an “Umpire of the Week” from
around the state. We are hoping to
recognize the umpire of the week
on the NDASA website and also
promote it through local league
websites as well as the national
ASA website. Anyone is able to
nominate an umpire of the week.
Simply contact the DUIC from your
region or contact Michael Wolf,
the State UIC and that umpire will
be put into consideration for the
recognition. So often, it is east to
complain about an umpire, so we
also want to hear from players and
managers about the good job that
umpires do as well.
We will continue to do background checks on all umpires in
the state. The fee’s to conduct the
background checks are paid for by
the umpires in their state registration fees. The background check

program has been successful and
it lends a lot of credibility to our
umpire program.
Through their registration fees,
umpires are automatically covered
under the insurance program offered by ASA. The benefits for
umpires are many in the event an
unfortunate situation occurs. However, PLAYERS ARE NOT COVERED FOR INJURIES UNDER
ASA INSURANCE UNLESS YOU
SECURE THAT COVERAGE
SEPERATELY THRUGH ASA.
Last year a player was seriously
injured and found out their team
didn’t secure the necessary coverage. Be sure and check with your
league rep or the state office on
how to secure insurance coverage
for your team.
Umpires are instructed at clinics
no to work any non-sanctioned ASA
events. It is equally important for all
leagues in ND to only use ASA
registered umpires to work their
league games and tournaments.
ASA provides liability insureance
for leagues in the event a situation
occurs where a lawsuit is brought
against the league for a variety
of unfortunate circumstances that
could occur. However, if you are
not using ASA registered umpires
and an incident occurs in which a
lawsuit is brought, your league will
not be protected by the ASA insurance plan. Can your league afford
that? the answer is no! It is not
worth taking the chance by not using sanctioned ASA umpires in yur
league games and tournaments. If
you have any questions concerning
this, would like more information,
or to get umpires registered, please
contact the state UIC, Mike Wolf at
701-400-2100, via email at:

Softball News Summer 2016 – 15
ASA/USA Softball announces organization rename
and rebrand to USA Softball and unveils new logo
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Amateur Softball Association (ASA)
of America/USA Softball, the
National Governing Body (NGB)
of Softball in the U.S., announced
today their organizational rename
and rebrand to USA Softball and
new logo, which will be effective
January 1, 2017. As the sport of
softball continually evolves, focusing on the USA Softball brand
better reflects the legacy that ASA/
USA Softball has established over
its 80 years as the leader in the sport
of softball.
“This is an exciting time for
ASA/USA Softball as the rebrand
to USA Softball reflects our vision for the growth of the sport,”
said ASA/USA Softball President
Warren Jones. “For over 80 years,
ASA/USA Softball has been the
driving force behind the sport of
softball, and this new logo truly
embodies that character and legacy.
I encourage all of our members to
embrace the change of rebranding
our organization to USA Softball
that the ASA/USA Softball Board
of Directors approved during its
September, 2015 Board Meeting.
As the National Governing Body
of Softball, USA Softball will
continue to serve as the leader in
the sport of softball while helping
foster the passion and love for the
game to all.”
When ASA/USA Softball entered the softball picture in 1933,
the sport was in a state of confusion
with no unified set of playing rules
and no NGB to provide guidance
and stability. ASA/USA Softball
changed all that by adopting softball’s first universally accepted
rules of play and by organizing consistent and fair competition across
the nation. Since its
founding, ASA/USA
Softball serves the
softball community as
the leader in certified
equipment standards,
coaching education
and umpiring while
providing the best-ofthe best in softball at
all levels. Whether
as a coach, athlete,
umpire, administrator or fan, ASA/USA
Softball provides the
most exciting, level
and competitive fields
of play.
ASA/USA Softball has left
an everlasting imprint on the sport,
athletes and officials, creating many
historic “firsts” for the game, including the first set of unified rules,
the first standardized uniforms for
officials, a Hall of Fame to honor
those individuals who have left an
impact upon our sport and fielding
the first U.S. Olympic Softball
team in 1996. From this beginning,
ASA/USA Softball has become one
of the nation’s largest and fastest
growing sports organizations and
now sanctions competition in every
state through a network of 70 local
associations. In its long history,
ASA/USA Softball has grown from
a few hundred teams in the early
days to over 160,000 teams today,
representing a membership of more
than 2.2 million. That legacy will
continue to live on through the USA
Softball
brand, providing a cleare r
identity of what USA Softball stands
for, represents and embodies.
“The evolution of our brand to
USA Softball showcases our organization to its fullest potential,”
said ASA/USA Softball Executive
Director Craig Cress. “Rebranding
shows our members, teams, umpires, players and fans that we are
continually evolving and furthering
the softball community while connecting and unifying them under the
USA Softball brand. I’m excited
for our fans, members and administrators to connect and identify with
our new look and the
USA Softball brand.”
In addition to rebranding, ASA/
USA Softball has
also unveiled a new
redesigned logo, approved by the ASA/
USA Softball Board
of Directors at its April
2016 board meeting,
which will replace the
ASA/USA Softball
split logo throughout
the transition to USA
Softball. The redesign
contains several key elements of previous ASA/USA
Softball logos, while clearly
identifying the USA Softball brand
as the organization evolves towards the future. The home plate
shape embodies the sport, while
bold, block USA Softball lettering
symbolizes USA Softball’s authority as the NGB. Along with the
redesigned prominent features of
the logo, the stars and stripes pay
homage to the U.S. flag and classic
American iconography, connecting
fans and members with the USA
Softball brand. Several subtleties
also lie within the new logo, as the
three red stripes reference 1933, the
year ASA/USA Softball was found-
ed, and the stars represent the four
territories of ASA/USA Softball.
