If you own a smart phone then the ABC Vegie Guide App is definitely worth downloading onto your phone. This guide is an ideal way to plan and keep a record of what you have planted in your vegetable garden. By providing the app with your location on application it will also recommend the vegetables best suited for your climate. Then go into The Nursery section and choose the vegetables you are planting into your real vegetable garden, this will follow on to being saved in the next area, The Patch. This section will individually record information about the vegetable including when it was planted and how many days until harvest. You can even add notes and take photos of your vegetable to record its progress as it grows. When the vegies are ready to be harvested, the progress bar will turn from green to red. Once you have harvested your vegetables, tap on the red progress bar to indicate that you have harvested that vegetable. The next area on this app is The Facts section, which is full of handy information such as companion planting, crop rotation, plant health and pest remedies. I have had this app loaded into my own phone since June this year and have found it a different and interesting way to keep a record of what I have planted in my winter vegetable garden. It can be installed onto your phone by going to the app store and typing in ABC gardening then simply press the install button. And the best thing of all, its free! Free Golf for Dad’s On Father’s Day Sunday 1st September This Month’s Special 15% OFF UNIVERSAL ROCKS Shelf stock only ‘Where Gardener’s Grow’ Judged Best Medium Garden Centre of Victoria 2008, 2009 & 2010 Last Chance for Bare Rooted Stock With day light hours growing and the morning temperatures rising early, now is really the last chance for purchasing bare rooted stock. All bare rooted plants are dormant over winter which allows them to be dug up and sold in this form—a stick with exposed roots, or in the case of roses, sticks with thorns—no pot required. But as spring approaches these plants start to grow again. This is evident by the buds along the bare branches starting to swell and burst open as the sap flow returns behind them. Once this begins to happen the plants must be potted or planted to avoid setting back this critical growth period, allowing the roots to develop and supply the moisture and nutrients that the new growth requires. If you leave it too late you will miss out on the opportunity to purchase your plants bare rooted because what we have in stock will have to be potted up. At a recent national forum for retail garden centres that Larry attended, the following youtube clip was shown. If you forget the accent and the American references it is all very relevant to us here in Australia. It makes you realise just how much we under value plants in our modern society and it is about time we did something to change it. Growing to about 1.5 to 2m in height, this is a fast growing plant that will thrive in a sunny position in the garden. That said, Yellow Broom has also been proven to tolerate partly shaded spots as well. As the name suggests, the plant will display a wonderful show of bright, golden yellow pea-shaped flowers in spring. The plant will be almost covered with these cheery flowers, helpful for attracting birds and wildlife to the garden. Pet and livestock friendly, the plant makes a great low screen, potted specimen or filler shrub. An adaptable plant, it will tolerate periods of dry and most soil conditions. For best results, Yellow Broom will thrive in moist well drained soil and a warm sunny position. Yellow Broom is an exceptionally easy to grow and forgiving plant. It will tolerate hard pruning when required, best implemented after flowering. Being part of the Legume family, Broom also has the ability to fix nitrogen on their root system, improving soil fertility. A great way to introduce some low care, easy to grow colour into the garden, Dwarf Yellow Broom makes a great choice.
