ay message stick Cross Country 2016 the JUNE ISSUE 2016 2016 Administration Team Mrs Kyrra Mickelborough Principal Acting Principal | Kyrra Mickelborough ([email protected]) Deputy Principal | Darrell Crimson ([email protected]) Deputy Principal | Rob Symons ([email protected]) Acting Deputy Principal | Janelle Leslie ([email protected]) Business Services Manager | Ursula Dux ([email protected]) > deception bay shs message stick It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the third newsletter for 2016. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs McDonald, Mrs Berendt, our Business students and our partner Glenn Goiser from GT Concepts for their collaborative efforts with our school newsletter. I look at the pages of our newsletter with such pride, not only in the beautiful photos and professional layout but more importantly for the activities and events offered to our students and supported by our wonderful staff to enrich Deception Bay State High School students’ schooling experience. NAPLAN We saw the completion of the NAPLAN test by our Year 7 & 9 students as well as others across Australia, in recent weeks. I am so proud of the efforts of our students and their commitment to doing their best. I would like to make special mention of the NAPLAN team dedicated to supporting our students and ensuring they did not become overwhelmed during NAPLAN. Mr Symons, our Master Teacher Mrs Teata, our Year Level Coordinators Ms Bates and Ms Kelly and all Year 7 & 9 LEAP teachers. I would also like to thank Mrs Leighton and her team of volunteers who provided breakfast and fruit during each day of testing. I know that there have been many opponents of the NAPLAN test but I believe there are also huge benefits. The challenge of external assessment can be overwhelming, therefore building our students confidence and test readiness is critical. GROWTH MINDSET We need to be flexible and creative in our thinking in trying to support students. DBSHS is committed to the philosophy of Growth Mindset and the work of Carol Dweck and I encourage all families to embrace Growth Mindset in your interactions with your children. 2 1) Have daily learning discussions At dinner, in the car or at bedtime, take time to ask and Principal’s Report share the answers to these types of questions: “What did you learn to day?” (I LOVE this – so much better than “How was your day?”) “What mistake did you make that taught you something?” 2) Give feedback on process only Praise effort, persistence, strategies, seeking challenges, setting goals, planning, or using creative strategies. 3) Do you know brains can grow Explain to kids how the brain can grow stronger and that intelligence can improve throughout your life. Intelligence is not fixed. It’s changeable. 4) Encourage risk, failing and learning from mistakes Now is the time to let our kids risk and fail. Failure teaches our kids important life lessons. For one, it’s how they learn resiliency. 5) Encourage and model positive self talk IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL PARENTS, CARERS AND VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL All parents, carers and visitors to the school must report firstly to the school Administration to sign in and to make an appointment to see the person they need to see. Please do not go directly to staff rooms or classrooms under any circumstances. These processes are in place to help protect students and ensure that the school remains a safe and secure environment. > www.decebayshs.eq.edu.au Issue - JUNE 2016 > deception bay shs message stick Hi Glenn, This is coming up as blank boxes for us?? STEM Fest aims to promote interest in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in students from Years 7, 8 and 9 in a three phase approach (see below). STEM Fest was established through an interest and passion in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics from state secondary schools in the Moreton Bay Region along with support from QUT, The Wonder of Science, the Queensland STEM Education Network, Step Up and Australian Government Department of Education. Every year, STEM Fest is based on the National Science Week theme which in 2016 is “Drones, Droids and Robots”. Students in 7A & 8A Science have been invited to participate in the STEM Fest 2016. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to explore robotics & work with university based mentors. STEM Fest provides students with a genuine extension opportunity in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, well beyond what they would normally experience in their high schools. Parents and the community are a part of the STEM Fest project, and are invited to attend the Showcase Evening held during Science Week at Murrumba State Secondary College. > www.decebayshs.eq.edu.au Issue - JUNE 2016 > deception bay shs message stick NAPLAN NAPLAN has commenced and finished for 2016. Three days of testing is a big ask for any year level, and our Year 7s and 9s focus, behaviour and application was exemplary for each of the NAPLAN tests. We are very proud of the way you performed, and look forward to seeing further improvement in our results come August/September! Mr Darrell Crimson Deputy Principal Year 7 & 12 An enormous thank you needs to go to the hard working staff who organized, supervised and encouraged our students during the tests, and also to the Year 7 and 9 teachers who so diligently prepared our students for NAPLAN, preventing unnecessary anxiety and stress on the days. Special thanks also go to the dedicated Hospitality staff, Mrs McDonald, Mrs Leighton and her ASPIRE students, as well as Mr Worsfold as several of his Futures students, who prepared delicious ‘toasties’ on the B.B.Q each morning of the tests, as well as fruit platters between the test breaks, ensuring our students had full bellies to perform at their best. This is just another example of teamwork from the whole school community to ensure quality student outcomes at Deception Bay State High. Several students were nominated by their teachers for their application, effort and behavior during the NAPLAN tests. These students went into a draw, and the following were winners of the draw and received an award for NAPLAN application: Year 7 Mr Rob Symons Deputy Principal Year 9 & 11 Lachy Allen Danielle Beards Amber Garner Pepe Makara Alyssa Talasilia Elim Aviga Isabella Cobcroft Henslahval Lilo Tanek Mock Skye Whelan Year 9 Caitlin Bowden Alisi Folau Brooklyn Garner Valesa Leului Jessie Televave Deputy Principal NEWS 4 Mrs Janelle Leslie Acting Deputy Principal Year 8 & 10 Teleigha Fiorin Brooke Ford Braedan Hetaraka Tahlia Martin Paul Tukuaoga ATTENDANCE – In recent years we have made significant progress with the increase in expectations and accountability around student effort, behavior and attendance. We put a lot of time and work into these 3 areas with students at Deception Bay State High School, as they all work together and play a significant role in producing the best learning outcomes possible for our students. The past 3 years have seen 100% of our graduating Year 12 cohorts receiving a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). We can guarantee the same results for future graduating cohorts, and can ensure younger cohorts are achieving to the best of their ability, provided that students do one simple thing – show up and actively attend school! ‘EVERY DAY COUNTS’ Mr Ben Huxley - Acting Deputy Principal > www.decebayshs.eq.edu.au As parents, we require your support to help us ensure that your child is attending school everyday. In cases where students may be sick, attending external appointments, or are late for school, please notify our office staff and ensure that all absences are explained. We do issue consequences for lateness and unexplained or unapproved absences from school to students, so please ensure correct procedures are followed. Thank you for your cooperation with respect to student attendance and for being part of Deception Bay State High School’s continual improvement agenda. Issue - JUNE 2016 > deception bay shs message stick UQ Sunflower Competition This year, Deception Bay SHS participated in the University of Queensland Sunflower competition. Students from Year 10 and 11 Horticulture researched secret recipes to make their sunflower grow strong and tall. The aim of the competition was to grow the heaviest or the tallest sunflower. Some of the sunflowers didn’t make it past the holidays after being devoured by some grasshoppers and not receiving enough rain. Of those that sunflowers that survived, two groups from Year 11 won the heaviest sunflowers and the winner of the tallest sunflower went to Mr Bank’s 10 Horticulture class. Well done to all the students that participated. Miss Richardson 5 © 2016 QUT 22088 FREE health check day for kids! This excursion aligned with the unit they are studying ‘Farm to Feast.’ The students took a guided tour around the dairy farm exploring the process from the cows being milked to the bottling procedure. Students also had the chance to hand feed some noisy pigs, chickens and baby calves and watch a cow being milked by hand. Some students even had some milk fresh from the cow! In the media of late, the plight of dairy farmers across Australia has had consumers turning their back on big brands and supporting locally produced dairy products. This excursion proved to be beneficial with students making real world connections about the Farm to Feast process whilst developing their knowledge of the need to support local Australian industries. 6 > www.decebayshs.eq.edu.au Issue - JUNE 2016 > deception bay shs message stick ENRICHMENT NEWS On the 19th of May, 33 students from Moreton Downs SS and Deception Bay North SS visited our school to participate in a Japanese extension program. Students spent the day in the LOTE building with our Japanese teachers Mr Baisden and Ms Power and our pre-service teacher Jordan Meiers. Throughout the day, the primary school students participated in three intensive language learning sessions where they learnt new communication skills and practiced their Japanese. In the final session, students wrote and performed role-plays demonstrating what they had learnt. The program was a huge success and we received positive feedback from the primary students and their teachers. A special thank you to Taalolo Tupai and Ranshika Krishor who helped out during one of the sessions and made the students feel welcome at Deception Bay SHS. We are looking forward to having our feeder primary schools visit again for the next Japanese extension day which will be held in term 3. 7 Exploring Green Zones – On the 23rd of May students from the Year 11/12 Marine Science class visited NudgeeBeach Environmental Education Centre. The purpose of this visit was for students to observe first hand the management of a Green zone (Marine National Park) and gain an insignt into the importance of conservation. Students immensly enjoyed all the activities which included canoeing in Nudgee Creek, water testing and handling a fresh water crocodile. > www.decebayshs.eq.edu.au Issue - JUNE 2016 Yr 11 Marine Science Excursion > deception bay shs message stick School Wide Positive Behaviour Update Another month has gone by and another lot of SWPB Students of the Month winners. Mrs McDonald SWPB Committee > www.decebayshs.eq.edu.au Issue - JUNE 2016 > deception bay shs message stick Year 9 Camp On Monday the 23rd May, Year 9 students & teachers ventured to Luther Heights Youth Camp in Coolum and participated in various activities to expand our potential and help us realize our strengths. Year 9s participated in a lot of activities, but I can certainly say that everyone’s favourite was the “flying fox.” Students were able to encourage each other which led to many students feeling supported to face their fears. The flying fox was a staggering 200 metres (the size of 2 football fields) and the highest point reached was 20 metres above ground. The camp provided the most delicious food that pleased everyone. Students were served lasagne, BLTs, and for breakfast, eggs and bacon with toast and pancakes. We cannot forget about the desserts as students happily devoured the scrumptious warm chocolate brownies with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. Of course, we can’t forget to mention the breathtaking view that overlooked the beautiful beach. Some students even woke up at 6am to see the spectacular sunrise over the ocean. The Year 9 Deception Bay State High Students would like to thank the camp for their activities and for encouraging us to try the activities we wouldn’t normally do. Hopefully leaving all the students with the sense they accomplished something. All students performed exceptionally. The camp manager even made a wonderful comment saying we were “excellent” and “great ambassadors for the school.” 9 Overall Year 9 camp was an amazing experience that everyone enjoyed participating in and it was a fun-packed, exciting three days off school. Sara Maskill & Chantelle Hissey Junior Secondary Captains It Moves!! Year 8 Visual Arts this Term undertook a newly designed Sculpture Unit. The students were tasked with creating an assemblage, a three dimensional work created from found objects. The assemblages had to kinetic, meaning they had to move or imply movement. According to Mr Simmonds, the Head of Department for Visual Arts, (and class teacher), the students really lifted when presented with this challenge, producing some amazing objects. He stated, “I was unsure how they’d go, since there’s loads of new concepts attached to this task.” He was delighted with the outcomes as they were, “…highly creative pieces of sculpture.” Students will be holding a “pop up” exhibition in Week 9 to showcase their work to the school. The Art Department > www.decebayshs.eq.edu.au Issue - JUNE 2016 > deception bay shs message stick Hospitality Work Experience Week 6 & 7 this term saw another group of students from Hospitality attend Work Experience in Industry. This time, it was the Year 11 students’ turn to get out into the workplace to learn about the Hospitality Industry & a range of occupations within it. Work Experience is vital to students in completing Hospitality as they must complete a large number of shifts to attain the Certificate II & III. However, it is also a very worthwhile experience to extend students outside of this course. It gives them an opportunity to get into the real world of employment & find out what a job involves, develop skills that will be recognised in other workplaces, improve communication skills & the ability to work in a team as well as understand the world of work as a whole. For many students, they are stepping out of their comfort zone & building confidence & resilience as they head into work, often for the very first time, in a completely new environment with employers & colleagues they have never met. It gives them an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment & reliability and the Hospitality Department were very impressed with their success & enthusiasm during these weeks. Feedback from empoyers was overwhelmingly positive. Our next group of Work Experience students will be the Year 10 students heading out at the end of Term 3. 10 A big thank you to parents who had to shuttle students to and from Work Experience or assist their students in ensuring they arrived on time & ready to work. We would also like to take this moment to acknowledge our Industry partners who so willingly volunteer to receive & support our students on Work Experience, without them, we would not be able to provide this opportunity. On Wednesday evening, 18th May, two Deception Bay State High School Students demonstrated their Love of Language by proudly representing our school at the BallyCara Retirement Village’s annual public speaking competition. Year 11 students, Akayla Hales and Rhian Henderson, admirably competed, tackling the topic: “What is the future of federation in Australia?” Congratulations to both students and a special mention to Miss Allen and Miss Crone for their Above: The proud Deception Bay State High School support of Akayla and Rhian in this extracurricular activity. competitors, Rhian Henderson (left) and Akayla Hales Mr Pearce 400 Years of the Bard! This year marks the 400th Anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. Around the world, people will be marking the importance of the life and work of the undisputed greatest writer of the English language. Check out this article from Book Riot Website which looks at the timeless appeal of Shakespeare’s writing. MODERN RETELLINGS OF SHAKESPEARE FOR EVERY READER MOLLY WETTA 04-19-16 400 years later and Shakespeare just hasn’t gotten old. Good old Will has earned his place in the literary canon for good reason. I mean, the guy invented 1700 words, remaking our language. He is responsible for the most cunning, hilarious insults. 11 But it wasn’t just his clever way with words that made him and enduring literary figure. These stories—of love and betrayal, of revenge and jealousy, of ambition and folly—speak to the human condition. So it’s no surprise that the basic plots and the character archetypes of Shakespeare have been remixed by modern writers. There’s no shortage of Shakepeare-inspired fiction. Every reader should find something to pique their interest among these 12 adaptations and homages to the Bard. Modern Retellings of Shakespeare The Gap of Time by Jeanette Winterson The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski Brooding, flawed characters? Check. Intricately plotted? Definitely check. This one’s for the dog lovers. Atmospheric and haunting, this is a story of a young, speech-disabled boy trying to prove his uncle murdered his father. Compelling? Lyrical? Are you still surprised this is inspired by Shakespeare? The Dead Father’s Club by Matt Haig Winterson transplants The Winter’s Tale to London just after the financial crisis and a storm-ravaged American South with flawed characters entangled in jealousy, obsession, even self-delusion. And don’t be surprised when no one escapes unscathed. A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley Smiley’s taut prose and grasp of human nature brings the story of King Lear to a Iowa farm. This bleak, moody novel reveals keen insight into people’s motivations and deftly explores sibling rivalry and the tensions of marriage. Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler Not all Shakespeare is doom and gloom, though, and neither is this list. Tyler modernizes The Taming of the Shrew as the story of a research doctor on the verge of a medical breakthrough who schemes to have his daughter marry his lab assistant, whose visa is about to expire. An engaging novel with sharp humor. > www.decebayshs.eq.edu.au Issue - JUNE 2016 If you really loved Hamlet for the ghosts, you’ll love this modern take on it from British author Matt Haig, who’s always delightfully clever. At his father’s funeral, 11-year-old Philip realizes he’s just been admitted into the Dead Father’s Club, whose members are exclusively the children of those who were murdered, and that only murdered people end up as ghosts. So now he’s on a mission to avenge his father. With such an endearing narrator, this is captivating read. Shakespeare-inspired Feminist YA A Wounded Name by Dot Hutchinson This novel is a reimagining of the world and story of Hamlet from Ophelia’s perspective and set in an American boarding school. Feminist, dark, brooding, with evocative language, don’t think that just because this is YA it will have a happy ending. > deception bay shs message stick A few words from - THE WASABI WARRIORS (A DBSHS Japanese Department Initiative) On the 20th of April, Mr Baisden and Ms Power took a group of Year 10,11 and 12 Japanese students to the University of the Sunshine Coast for a Japanese immersion day. Throughout the day, students participated in a range of activities, which allowed students to practice their Japanese language skills with native speakers. Students learnt about the origins of Kanji, how to participate in the green tea ceremony, calligraphy and the martial art of aikido. They also learnt how to use menus and order food entirely in Japanese. Their behaviour and conduct on the day was exceptional. The way they interacted with students and teachers from other schools as well as volunteers from the university made their teachers very proud. Well done to these students! 12 We Remember On Wednesday 6th June our school community lost a much loved and respected member of staff, Calvin Porter. Calvin had dedicated 12 years to students of Deception Bay SHS. Our deepest condolences go to Calvin’s wife Angelique, their 2 sons and extended family. > www.decebayshs.eq.edu.au Issue - JUNE 2016 > deception bay shs message stick Mathematics Teams Tournament A group of 26 students from Year 7 through to Year 12 participated in a series of competitive mathematics-based challenges at the annual Mathematics Teams Tournament hosted by Narangba Valley SHS on Monday, 16th May. The students represented Deception Bay State High School with distinction. Their behaviour and dress were excellent and it was great to see our students cooperate and work together while developing their problem solving skills. The day included a range of individual, team and relay challenges as well as an amusing keynote from the Australian Numeracy Ambassador, Simon Pampena who humorously discussed the mathematics in the Olympic Games. Overall our five teams from Deception Bay State High School had an enjoyable day. 13 Redcliffe Youth Space The Youth Space (also known as the Redcliffe Youth Space) is a government funded youth service provider and a registered charity that works across the Redcliffe Peninsula, as well as elsewhere in the Moreton Bay Region when we’re invited to do so. We work with children, young men and women between the ages of 10 and 25 who present with any issue that may be causing them concern or is in some way impacting negatively on their lives. Our roles: • • • • from placing a young person into a program negotiating additional support for them sometimes just listening, other times arranging specialist counselling putting them into intensive case management when needed We support them to • • • • build resilience look at their life in an objective way so they can develop a level of independence build networks for them create pathways and options for them that will help them move forward in their life. All of that can take time. Once a young person overcomes one barrier in their life and their head is clearer, they may realise they need help with something else and we start the process again. Life is a journey, and sometimes you can’t see the way forward until a few of the obstacles are removed. > www.decebayshs.eq.edu.au Issue - JUNE 2016 > deception bay shs message stick Sport Trials and Cross Country The dust from the 2016 DBSHS Cross Country Carnival has now settled, and after all the tallying, we saw Cawley win it for their second consecutive year! The carnival was a tight race, with Elliot, Gould, and Bradman hot on the tail of the Cawley Lions. The day saw six school records broken, with Chloe Storm beating the existing 15 years girls record by an astounding four minutes. Lleyton Bonser was also dominant on the track, taking out the overall quickest time in the school for the third straight year. A big thank you to the SRC for running a BBQ and face painting, which were both successful on the day. In sport trials this term, we have had students trialling for basketball, softball, rugby league, soccer, and cross country. Year 7 students Ulisese Nati and Kurt Kavana have been successful in being selected for the Sunshine Coast rugby league team. In Year 10, Chloe Storm ran a fantastic race at the district Cross Country Carnival, placing first in her age group. She will now move onto the Sunshine Coast regional trial. Finally, Cameron White, of Year 11, represented Queensland in Softball in a State Tournament and was selected to represent Australia in an upcoming International Tournament. The entire Deception Bay SHS community are proud of each and every student that represents our school in the sporting arena inside and outside of our local community. Mr Donnellan - Sport Coordinator 14 Senior Biology & Marine Science Ecology Excursions Biology and Marine Science students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have been out and about, exploring different ecosystems around South East Queensland. The sand was between the toes (and in the shoes) on Bribie Island, where they studied the sand dunes near Woorim, collecting data such as wind speed, light intensity and temperature. In the afternoon some students got to cruise the Pumicestone Passage aboard Ferryman Cruises, where they saw dugongs, turtles, dolphins and a wide variety of birds. The Year 11 Biology class explored the shorebird habitat and mangrove forest at Banksia Beach while waving to the rest of the group as they sailed past! The next day, the Year 11 and 12 Biology classes swapped their sandy shoes for muddy ones, so they could study the mangrove ecosystem at Nudgee Beach. A leisurely stroll through a mangrove boardwalk followed by a mangrove transect study helped the students learn about the six mangrove tree species and the intricate balance within the ecosystem. A big THANK YOU to all students involved who had exceptional behaviour and left wonderfully positive impressions of Deception Bay State High School.
