Time: 12:30pm - 5:00pm
Admission: Free
by Mel Tsuji
A baseball game and a haircut help settle a dispute that develops
between interned Japanese Americans and local residents who
resent the presence of “enemy aliens’ in their town.
This summarizes the theme of the second film being shown on
Thursday April 9, 2009 at 7:00pm as part of the nikkeiFLIX film
series at the JCCC. Admission to the movie is free. nikkeiFLIX is
co-sponsored by the JCCC Heritage Committee and Nikkei Voice,
the national, monthly newspaper for Japanese Canadians.
The
films
and
documentaries being shown
at nikkeiFLIX are all written,
produced and directed by
Japanese Canadians and
Japanese Americans. They
are part of a concerted effort
being made by the Heritage
Committee and Nikkei Voice
to bring more JC historical
and cultural issues to
attention of the community.
The April film is
tittled, American Pastime.
It is about how Japanese
Americans interned at an
evacuation near the small
town of Topaz overcome
humiliation by local townsfolk
by winning a baseball game -- and a haircut.
The JCCC Annual Bazaar committee is busy
organizing our biggest one-day fundraiser
of the year! So mark your calendar for
Saturday May 2, 2009 from 12:30pm to
5:00pm. It’s a shopping extravaganza with
great deals on Noritake tableware, logoware,
lawn accessories, gardening items, starter
plants, baked goods, etc., plus lots of white/
pink elephant treasures and of course our
Silent Auction with some great products to
bid on. There will also be lots of food for sale
such as sushi, mochi, udon, tempura - for
take home or dining in while you take a break from your shopping
spree.
Please come and support your JCCC!
We welcome donations of all kinds – baked goods (including
cakes, pies, cookies, squares, etc), Japanese food (including manju,
sekihan, chiraishi, bento, etc), white elephant, new products, etc.
Non-perishable donations can be dropped off at the JCCC reception
desk anytime. Perishable donations that can be refrigerated can
be accepted on May 1 & 2.
While we appreciate everyone’s generosity, we ask that you
DO NOT donate used clothing.

A Very Unconventional Romantic
Comedy: Happily Ever After
HAPPILY EVER AFTER (Jigyaku no Uta) is a live-action comedy
directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi and based on a popular manga
series by Yoshiie Gouda. The manga was first published in 1996
and has sold more than 300,000 copies.
HAPPILY EVER AFTER was the subject of controversy upon
its initial release in October, 2007 for its depiction of a co-dependent
and devoted, but troubled wife, and her boorish, unemployed and
often abusive husband. But director Yukihiko Tsutsumi keeps the
laughs coming as he explores a sensitive subject in a visually
striking, and darkly comedic way.
Yukie Morita (played by Miki Nakatani of TRAIN MAN: DENSHA
OTOKO and the RING film series) works hard at a noodle shop
and struggles to make ends meet, while her ex-gangster husband
Isao (played by Hiroshi Abe of GODZILLA 2000) hangs around all
day gambling and getting into trouble. Isao’s uncontrollable temper
often results in the dinner table being overturned and their meal on
the floor. Everyone advises Yukie to leave Isao, but her love for him
is unconditional because he was the one who initially saved her
from misery with his unconditional love.
“HAPPILY EVER AFTER is a visually inventive, and engrossing
comedy that makes you feel warm, despite its depiction of a series
of unluckiness and failures in life,” says Manami Iiboshi, director
of marketing, VIZ Pictures. “This is not a story about an unhappy
marriage, but about a journey of reuniting twin souls, overcoming
successive hardships and problems with laughter.

Dedication Ceremony to Bill Hashizume
& the Release of the Directory Project
In 1921, Jinshiro Nakayama published, in
Japanese, a two volume book on the history
of the Nikkei in Canada as well as the
profiles of prominent Japanese pioneers. Of greater genealogical importance to our
community today is volume two which was
a directory of Japanese living in Canada.
With an aging Nisei population, coupled
with a high rate of intermarriage among
Canadian Nikkei, the Heritage Committee of
Bill Hashizume
the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre saw
the value in the translation of this Directory
Tak Yano
for future generations.
The task of translating hundreds of pages of names was made
more challenging for the Directory was written in kanbun or early
Japanese writing. Translating kanbun requires knowledge that a
majority of Japanese do not posess today. The Japanese Canadian
community is indebted to Bill Hashizume, who, upon the request of
the Heritage Committee, agreed to take on this project in June of
2006 until his passing on February 23, 2007 and to Saeko Suzuki
whose commitment has made it possible for its completion.
Please join us and the Hashizume family for the dedication
ceremony and the official release of the Directory to the public. Due
to the immense size of the translation (over 700 pages) samples will
be available for viewing. CDs will be available for sale and those
who prefer the book may place an order that evening. Admission is
free but reservations are strongly recommended at 416-441-2345
or [email protected]. Light refreshments will be served.

Tai Chi Class at the JCCC
Starting in June 2009, JCCC Tai Chi classes
will be taught by Master Emiko Hsuen for
a trial period of two months. They will take
place on Wednesdays at 2:00pm in one of
multi purpose rooms or Kobayashi Patio if
weather permits. There is no age limit. You
may wonder what Tai Chi is or what Tai Chi
Master Emiko Hsuen
does for you. Here is some insight from the
instructor:
The Joy of Tai Chi Chuan
My own teacher often says, “life is a meaningful flow of energy”. Tai
Chi Chuan is the art of learning how to flow in the great energy of
the Cosmos. It is the way of non-resistance. Through flowing in the
energy of the Cosmos, we attain:
a)
good health
b)
mental clarity
c)
vitality for daily activities
d)
the ability for self-defence
e)
spiritual expansion
The style of Tai Chi Chuan I teach is called Wahnam Tai Chi Chuan.
It is the style that is closest to what was practiced by Zhang SanFeng, the person credited with being the ‘father’ of Tai Chi Chuan.
Though I did learn several other well-known styles of Tai Chi Chuan,
this style of Wahnam Tai Chi Chuan is the one from which I have
personally received the most benefits. It is therefore the style that I
am proud and honoured to teach. I received permission from own
teacher, Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit, to teach Tai Chi Chuan back
in 2004, and I have been teaching it ever since.
Through the practice of Tai Chi Chuan, students learn how to
deeply relax into the natural flow of chi (qi). This deep relaxation
into the chi enables a person to experience relief from physical
pain (e.g. backache, arthritis, headache etc), as well as increased
vitality for daily living. In Wahnam Tai Chi Chuan, much emphasis is
placed on the art of “child’s breathing” and “smiling from the heart”.
Through “child’s breathing”, the natural healing power in our bodies
is significantly enhanced. Through “smiling from the heart”, the
human spirit is strengthened and the heart made fearless.
In this 8-week series, students will learn a short sequence
of chi-derived patterns. They will be shown how to enter chi flow,
both in the class and at home. They will understand how the same
patterns can be used for self-defence, and, by the end of the
course, students will have tasted some of the wonderful benefits
of Tai Chi Chuan, such as pain relief, increased blood circulation,
disappearance of insomnia etc. In eastern medicine, it is said that
all illnesses and discomforts originate from yin-yang imbalance.
Once the yin-yang imbalance is restored, the "illness" disappears.
The practice of Tai Chi Chuan enables a person to actively restore
or enhance the yin-yang balance, such that physical, emotional,
mental blockages gently melt away. This results in greater joy and
quality of life!
Tai Chi Class

Hula Dancers and Aloha Themes for
Nostalgia Night
by Mel Tsuji
A big “Aloha” will be greeting visitors to this year’s Nostalgia Night
being held at the JCCC on Saturday June 20, 2009.
The Hawaiian theme will help celebrate an evening of tribute
and nostalgia as the Centre continues its 5th annual evening
devoted to Japanese Canadian culture and traditions.
Swaying hula dancers are being brought in to provide
entertainment, as well as well-known sansei singer, Jessica
Tsuda.
But the biggest moment will come when Ann Sunahara and
her husband, Dave, will be honored fo their effort in researching,
writing and publishing their book, The Politics of Racism. Ann and
Dave uncovered previously classified documents that proved that
the decision by the Federal Government to evacuate Japanese
Canadians and force them to live in internment camps for the
duration of the Second World War was based more on politics,
prejudice and racism than on sound reason and fact. They will be
honored with a Pioneer Achievement Award.
Sharing the spotlight for the evening will be a tribute to thethen young nisei who taught school in the internment camps of the
1940s, the so-called ghost town teachers. Among them will be Aiko
Murakami, still sharp and healthy at 92, who was the principal at a
school in New Denver. They will be honoured with Pioneer awards
for their hard work in teaching young JC students whose schooling
was so unjustly interrupted by the Canadian Government.
Also being honored with a Pioneer award will be Mrs.Toshiye
Tanaka, the long-time principal of the Toronto Japanese Language
School, in 1949 the first of the Japanese language schools to set
up operations after JCs started settling here in the postwar era.
Another highlight for the evening will be a tribute to the women
who played in the Nisei Ladies’ Softball League that thrived in
Toronto in the late 1940s and 50s.
And to top off the evening, a huge buffet of Japanese Canadian
food favorites, such as Cumberland chow mein, sushi, onigiri rice
balls, teriyaki chicken and others will be served.
All this for the bargain price of $7. Doors open at 3:00pm and
winds up at 8:00pm. Further details to come in the next issue of the
newsletter.

Upcoming Gendai Gallery Exhibits
Reel Asian & Gendai Gallery present:
Empty Orchestra: REMIX
April 11 - 30, 2009
Empty Orchestra: REMIX is a dynamic culmination of the
collaborative exploration of karaoke in contemporary art, between
Reel Asian and Gendai Gallery. The social performance of identity
through karaoke anchors this exhibition of video and installation
pieces. In the works of Emelie Chhangur, Bia Gayotto, Haruko
Tanaka and Karen Tam, cultural identity is mediated through song
and shared through translation. Long-time Japanese Canadian
Cultural Centre community member Tak Maejima’s self-portraits,
costumes and performance documentation offer insights into a
personal history of traditional Japanese karaoke. Empty Orchestra:
REMIX also revisits the Empty Orchestra LIVE! Special Video
Commissions, which premiered at the 2008 Toronto Reel Asian Int’l
Film Festival. Empty Orchestra: REMIX is a compelling tribute to
the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s Karaoke Club, the first of
its kind in Canada.
The EMPTY ORCHESTRA project is a collaborative
presentation of works by Canadian and international artists who
embrace and challenge notions of karaoke as a medium of individual
expression and collective identity. Notions of personal expression,
social engagement and cultural resistance are explored through
the pop culture phenomenon of second-hand songs. In October
2008, the EMPTY ORCHESTRA exhibition at the Justina M.
Barnicke Gallery featured new interactive media work by Canadian
and international artists. Premiering at the 2008 Reel Asian Film
Festival, Empty Orchestra LIVE! showcased live performances by
local karaoke stars with newly commissioned videos.
Toronto Reel Asian Int’l Film Festival and Gendai Gallery would
like to acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts
and the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.

New Creators Series 02:
EXTENSIONS
May 15 - June 25, 2009
Gendai Gallery introduces fresh contemporary design through the
works of emerging architect Haji Nakamura. This exhibition will
feature an installation inspired by a unique architectural project that
sits on 25 acres of forest and fields in rural Ontario. It is an ex-urban
pre-retirement house designed for the architect’s parents. The
house is the product of the creative efforts of his family members
8
and friends, all amateur builders; his Ijusha parents Banri and
Michiko, and brothers Nobi and Zen, who collaboratively built this
dream house from the ground up.
To produce an ongoing dialogue, this New Creators Series
will enable the JC community and the wider Canadian audience to
engage in the project through interactive events; a field trip, artists
talk, workshop, satellite exhibitions and collaboration with local
media.
The main themes of the house explored in this exhibition are:
Extension of networks, Family, Utopian idea, Nature and DIY (Do It
Yourself). These will be developed in three areas or fields, echoing
the extension of networks from the city centre to the dream house
in rural Ontario.
Programming/ Events…. not to be missed!

with live musical performance by Zen Nakamura

INFORMATION: for more about this exhibition/ RSVP or about
Gendai Gallery please contact: [email protected] or visit
www.gendaigallery.org
The New Creators Series allows the artists and curators to
collectively develop the exhibition through a forum of peer discussion
and consultation. From bouncing around ideas of concept and
vision, discussing production techniques, selecting space and
installation plans for the work, brainstorming avenues of press
and promotion, and the planning of supplemental programming,
the forum become an active learning process for all involved. This
collective educational model pushes forward Gendai Gallery's
support of collaboration, dialogue, and art education.
Gendai Gallery’s mission is to promote excellence in primarily
contemporary art & design with a curatorial emphasis on the work
by Canadian & International artists of Japanese ancestry and of the
larger Asian Community.
Situated within Toronto's Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre,
Gendai Gallery is interested in art in the context of culture and
community -- local and global -- and an ongoing interrogation of
these elements.
Gendai Gallery is committed to a multi-disciplinary program
encompassing visual art, design, performing arts, and literature.
We encourage inter-disciplinary work, collaboration, dialogue, and
art education. We challenge culturally defined distinctions between
art and craft, including artisanal practices.

Ohara School of Ikebana Flower Show
by the Ohara School of Ikebana Toronto Chapter
The Ohara School of Ikebana Toronto Chapter will celebrate its
35th Anniversary at the annual show on Sunday April 26, 2009.
Unshin Ohara founded the school in 1895 and was the originator of
Moribana (to capture the essence of natural scenic beauty), which
led to the landscape arrangement. He designed and produced the
wide, shallow containers which are now widely used for moribana
arrangements. The landscape Moribana is unique to the Ohara
School and was revolutionary at that time when most arrangements
were done in nageire style in tall containers.
The Ohara School now embraces many forms. The third and
fourth headmasters expanded the Ikebana styles and eventually
it was felt that the number of styles created confusion. Therefore,
in the year 2000 the school introduced a new classification to
meet the needs of the new century. The purpose was to introduce
Ikebana that is easy to understand and fun to learn. Most modern
homes cannot accommodate the large traditional arrangements
and so we find new styles which are more flexible, to fit in with
modern lifestyles and materials available. The traditional Moribana,
including landscapes, are still prized for their beauty. One particular
style, which can be seen as a development of the moribana, is the
Rimpa which is based on Rimpa paintings. A Rimpa is often used
as the spectacular finale to a demonstration.
Mr Mutsuo Tomita, a Grand Master of the Ohara School, will
be our guest at the show. He was the Director of the Ohara Centre
in New York before he retired. If you would like to see this Master
demonstrate the new styles of the Ohara School and create a
beautiful Rimpa arrangement come to the Ohara show.
Date & Time: Sunday April 26, 2009 from 12:00pm to 5:00pm
Location:
Toronto Botanical Garden, Floral Hall,

JCCC and Community Bids Farewell to Gifted Teacher
by Suzanne Hartman
Everyone at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre was shocked and
saddened to learn of the passing of our dedicated Sumi-e sensei, Aiko
Morton. Sumi-e teacher, community member and volunteer service award
winner, Aiko Morton died in hospital on March 10, 2009 after battling a
long-term illness. She was 63. Aiko leaves behind husband Howard, sons
Christopher (Valerie) and Daniel (Swanee), and the faithful family dog,
Miko.
Born in Chatham, Ont., on December 4, 1945, Aiko Sherian, daughter
of Frances Yaeki and the late William Shigeru Nakamura, grew up in the
Toronto Japanese Canadian community. As the third of eight children, she
was sister to Katherine Hartmann, Irene (Frank) Foulkes, Yuki Newbold,
Sumi-e by Aiko Morton
Judy (John) Hayami, Marlene (Ross) Mackenzie, Norma (Craig) Fleming
and Douglas (Margaret) Nakamura. She was like a second mother to her many nieces and nephews, and a doting great-aunt to their children.
She will also be missed by her large extended family of in-laws, aunts, uncles and cousins.
In the fall of 2002, Aiko started making weekly trips to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) to give Sumi-e lessons to
beginners. She was a natural artist and inspired crafter always busy with some project, from making quilts for family members to decorating
her house and cottage with classic DIY flair. And as a former high school teacher, who spent 23 years at Riverdale Collegiate, it only followed
that Aiko would combine both her creative skills and teaching talents. This left-handed artist had her own introduction to Sumi-e back in the
1970s, when she began studying the classic Japanese brush painting technique under the tutelage of well-known teacher, artist and pioneer
of Sumi-e classes in Toronto, Ruth Yamada. Decades later, after Aiko had graduated from Yamada’s classes and received her own seal, she
went on to join Sumi-e Artists of Canada and continue Yamada’s teachings at the JCCC.
Other community members will remember Aiko as a dedicated volunteer at both the JCCC and St. Andrew’s Japanese Anglican Church
bazaars. Few could keep up with this “Speedy Gonzalez” of sushi rolling or provide the knowledge the antique buff gladly shared when she
helped to price and sell various items at the boutiques. Aiko loved to golf and went curling regularly with her fellow sansei teammates. She
was an avid gardener who created English-inspired gardens with Japanese accents at her welcoming home. A gracious hostess, skilled cook
and baker, she was fond of entertaining, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. In the last few years despite her failing health,
which required her to take insulin for diabetes and carry oxygen tanks for her failing lungs, Aiko was determined to live life to the fullest doing
the things she loved, and made the most of the time she had.
As testament to this lovely and generous woman, hundreds of mourners lined the Heritage Funeral Centre in Toronto on March 13, 2009,
for both afternoon and evening visitations, to pay their respects to her family and say goodbye to Aiko. At the memorial service held on March
14, a capacity crowd filled the chapel to hear family, friends and colleagues pay heartfelt tributes, and share many fond memories of her
cherished life.

Haru Matsuri 2009
The rain on Saturday March 7 and the warm, sunny Sunday March
8 were the perfect spring weather to inspire people to come out for
the JCCC’s annual Haru Matsuri. The theme of Kimono was evident
through displays, demonstrations, and some vendors even came
dressed for this year’s theme. The thousands of members and visitors
who came out were able to explore both the simplicity of a summer
kimono, the yukata, and the ornate designs of the uchikake or wedding
kimono.
The addition of several new pieces to the traditional Hina
Matsuri display inspired many people to pose for a picture in our
entrance. With performances of odori, koto, and taiko in Kobayashi
Hall, demonstrations of martial arts in the dojos, tea ceremonies in
the Japan Information Centre and the many different displays and
vendors, there was a lot to see and do all weekend long.
The JCCC thanks the individuals, groups and organizations that
provide the entertainment and demonstrations. We also thank all the
great volunteers and staff, who helped raise this great community
tradition to new and greater heights!

Kamp Kodomo kids had lots of fun this March Break! Among the activities they enjoyed
were becoming part of a giant sandwich at Nikkei Kids Day, learning some cool Karate
moves, and making manju with Chef Shoji. Many thanks to all the volunteers and sensei for
making Kamp Kodomo a success.
We hope to see you again at Kamp Kodomo Summer 2009!

International Marriage (Kokusai Kekkon)
Workshop Report
By Koko Kikuchi, Japanese Social Services
The JCCC co-presented an important series of workshops to
support the growing number of Kokusai Kekkon couples in Toronto
area last fall.
As an organization serving the Japanese-speaking community
in the GTA, JSS has seen an increasing demand in counseling
related to cross-nationality marriages. Cross-nationality couples
encounter difficulties due to language barriers and varying
customs.
Goals of the Workshop were; 1) to help the participants
come to an understanding of the nature of their problems, 2) by
analyzing case studies and engaging in discussions, encourage
the participants to be able to see a positive path in order to deal
with their problems, 3) and finally to come up with solutions to
participants’ own problems.
The workshops were conducted in Japanese by panelists who
all have, themselves, experience with Kokusai Kekkon. This was
a closed workshop to make sure that the participants privacy was
fully protected. The workshop was divided into four sessions.
Session 1: “International Marriage in Canada: the facts”
Ms. Momo Kano Podolsky made a presentation on the
background of Japanese international marriage in Japan and in
Canada using statistical data and findings from her own research. Session 2: “Is this due to International Marriage?”
Participants expressed their concerns according to the
category of marriage issues. Everyone discussed the concerns and
sorted them according to category.
Session 3: “Now, I know Why – analyzing marriage issues”
In this session, four different “case studies of marriage issues”
were introduced to the participants. They had to analyze the

problems on each case and give advice to the other participants.
This exercise gave them an opportunity to objectify their own
marriage issues.
Session 4: “International Marriage: My Case.”
In the last session, the participants were encourage to speak
about what they had learned from the last three sessions and what
they were thinking of doing to improve their situation. After everyone
spoke, the panelists also alked about what they had learned and
gave some advice to the participants.
After each session, the participants were given an opportunity
to evaluate the workshop. The avarage score for the entire workshop
was 4.6 in the scale of 1(poor) to 5 (excellent).
They commented that it was very useful to learn from other
people’s experiences including the panelists’. Some said “My
issues became much clearer to me than before.” This implies that
they kept their issues to themselves because they felt they were
too complicated to explain to other people, however, participating
in this program, they could share their problems with others and
found directions to make their situation better. They also felt that the
participants were very open and honest which made the workshop
very “moving” and “touching”. They requested that since there are
many people who have similar problems, this workshop shuold be
continued for them.
Finally, on behalf of JSS, I would like to express my sincere
appreciation to the following organizations for their generous
support: National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC),
JCCC and Ikebata Nursery School.
