COVERSTORY
It’s in the pot
Let your imagination run wild and create a container garden
full of your favorite plant varieties.
C
Reporting: Lynn Boland & Jessica Untch
ontainer gardening is a great
way to add a splash of color to
your landscape. Use creative
combinations of annuals,
tropicals and perennials to frame
an entryway, enhance seating areas on your
patio or fill a gap in the garden. Containers also
provide a way to garden in small spaces, such
as on the porch or balcony of an apartment or
condo.
Here’s how to get started: First choose a few
containers that reflect your personal taste or
match the style of your home. You can even use
recycled objects to be more imaginative and
eco-friendly.
Some examples include:
• Decorative ceramic or colorful plastic pots
• Window boxes
• Hanging baskets
• Recycled items: old shoes, watering cans,
suitcases, wheelbarrows, etc.
petittigardencenter.com 2
Once you have chosen your containers,
consider the amount of sunlight your garden
receives. This is important in selecting plants
that will thrive in a particular location. Full
sun means at least 6 hours of direct light per
day, while partial sun equates to about 4 hours
in the morning or afternoon. Shade container
gardens would be placed on a covered porch
or under the canopy of a large tree. Our
knowledgeable staff can help you pick out
the right combination of plants to suit your
particular needs.
Designing your container garden can be fun
and rewarding. Here are a few simple design
principles:
• Create height or a central focal point
• Use trailing plants to add visual interest to the
outside of the pot
• Add blooming flowers to fill in with color
(annuals or perennials)
• Contrast textures by using different types
of foliage
Don’t be afraid to try something new, different
or exotic! For example, tropical foliage plants
like Crotons or Caladiums can make a bold
statement in containers. Plants like Lantana,
Fuschia, and Petunias can be used to attract
butterflies and hummingbirds.
Decide on a color theme to accentuate your
outdoor living areas or to create a mood. Hot
colors like red, bright yellow and orange are
stimulating, while cool colors like blue and
purple tend to have a calming effect. You can
also choose whether to mix colors for a fun,
exciting look or use one color to reinforce a
theme. For example, using soft yellow or white
can inspire a sense of relaxation.
Once you’ve had the excitement of selecting
your plants and containers, go ahead and plant
them. You will need potting soil, fertilizer
and some sort of drainage material. For large
containers, styrofoam peanuts or empty water
bottles can be used at the bottom of the pot to
reduce weight and help water drain away from
the root system. Once your drainage material is
in place, fill the pot halfway with Petitti Potting
Soil, arrange your plants and then fill with
additional soil or Petitti Planting Mix. Finish by
adding fertilizer and watering well.
Maintain your container garden by checking
soil moisture daily, reapplying fertilizer as
needed and cutting back overgrown plants
mid-season. Change out spring and summer
plants with mums in late August to enjoy color
all season long. Be sure to check out our featured
container gardens and Angelo’s soil recipe on
page 3.

Petitti’s will offer more than 75 varieties of tasty
tomatoes, perfect peppers, bountiful broccoli,
heirlooms and those hard to find international
favorites. Also included will be several compact
plants best for use in container gardens, along with
the best disease resistant types. These varieties
have been selected to represent some of the most
high-yielding, productive vegetables available on the
market today. They are designed to help every chef
make that favorite recipe, special sauce or marinade.
Grill them out on the patio, can them for the winter,
or just enjoy them f resh off the vines.
A few of Angelo’s all-time favorites are:
• ‘Peperoncino’, a small, 2-4″ long, light green
pepper from Milan, Italy that is super sweet picked
green or red, vigorous growing on compact plants,
and the most delicious fried with Italian sausage
and onions.
• ‘Juliet’ is an All American Selections (AAS)
winner for being one of the sweetest, crack and
disease resistant, plentiful cherry tomatoes
available on the market to date.
• ‘Genovese’ basil is a large leaf, green type
that is succulent and has a rapid replenish rate. It
features a strong taste perfect for pesto, salads,
sauces and dried seasonings.
• ‘Sweet Cluster’ tomato is the same as those
expensive vine tomatoes at the grocery store, yet is
considerably less expensive to grow at home! Each
vine-cluster holds 6 to 8 perfectly round, red, 4 oz.
fruits that are juicy and tart.
• ‘Corno di Toro’ is an incredible Italian stuffing
pepper; a long, sweet, heirloom horn-type that are
delicious green or red.

The Grass is Always Greener
W
reporting by Roger Bolger
hen assessing your home’s curb appeal, few things have as
much impact as the lawn. A green, lush lawn is inviting
and conjures images of family fun and enjoyment of
>
the outdoors. A patchy, weedy lawn suggests this home does not quite
measure up to the neighbors. Fortunately, the grass can be greener on
your side of the fence with only a few easy steps each year.
petittigardencenter.com 6
Start With The Soil
To have beautiful, green grass above ground, you
must have deep, healthy roots below. One of the
leading causes of poor lawns in Northeast Ohio
is our heavy clay soil which limits the growth of
roots. Clay particles are very small and tightly
packed, preventing air, water and nutrients from
penetrating easily, and limiting the ability to
support root growth. Normal lawn use will make
the problem worse by compacting the soil even
further. The best solution is to aerate your lawn
with a motor- or human-powered tool that removes
plugs of soil and leaves them on the lawn surface.
These thousands of holes serve as channels for air,
water and fertilizer to reach deeply into the soil,
and the extra air space relieves compaction. Take an
extra step and top dress the lawn with one quarter
inch of Michigan peat or compost to add organic
material and further improve the soil’s texture.
Lawns can develop a buildup of old grass roots,
stems and crowns that limit the availability of
water and nutrients to the roots. This layer is called
thatch, and it is easily seen in a piece of sod dug
from the lawn. Between the grass and the darker
soil will be a brown, fibrous band of thatch. If this
band measures half an inch thick or more, your
lawn needs help. Again, the best solution is core
aeration to punch holes in the thatch and deposit
soil plugs on the surface to help break down thatch.
Top dressing will accelerate this process.
interfering with growing new grass from seed.
Existing weeds like dandelions, ground ivy, clover
and chickweed are eliminated by Ortho® Weed
B Gon MAX® products and Bayer AdvancedTM
All-In-One Weed Killer. Apply these products in
later spring when weeds are growing vigorously.
These products are designed to kill only broad
leaved plants, so they are completely safe for grass.
Fertilizer actually helps the weed killer work better,
so don’t forget your second application of fertilizer
around Memorial Day. A weed and feed fertilizer is
a great way to accomplish both in one step, but be
sure to apply it to a wet lawn so the weed control will
stick to the weed leaves.
If you have undesirable grasses in the lawn, they
will have to be killed and replaced with new seed.
Coat the blades thoroughly with Roundup® or
Espoma Earth-tone® 4n1 Weed Control to eliminate
the bad grass. Once the patch is thoroughly brown,
put topsoil over the patch and sprinkle on some
grass seed.
What’s Bugging You?
Lawn grass likes to grow, but in order to do so, it
must have food. It is important to feed your lawn
regularly to maintain a healthy green color and
thick cover. Most lawns do best when fertilized
four or five times each year. A simple solution
is to use a lawn fertilizer program that features
four feedings appropriate for each time of year.
These programs often have additional ingredients
that will help keep your lawn free of weeds and
insects. Traditional lawn fertilizers are high in
nitrogen to maintain a dark green color, with just
enough potassium and phosphorus to keep the
lawn healthy and avoid excess that may run off.
Organic lawn fertilizers are gaining in popularity
and offer some of the same weed control benefits
as traditional fertilizers. Though organic fertilizers
are bulkier, the extra carbon-rich material aids in
maintaining better soil texture.
Thick and healthy lawns keep out weeds, but they
can invite insect pests to a glorious feast. If your
lawn is developing brown patches in summer for
no apparent reason, you might have bug problems.
Scotts® Step 3 fertilizer contains an insect controller
that eliminates the problem when applied around
July 4th. Ortho® Bug-B-Gon® MAX® granules also
cure most insect infestations, or for an organic
treatment, spray the lawn with Espoma Earth-tone®
Insecticidal Soap. Many fungal diseases mimic
the appearance of insect damage, so if you have a
mysterious brown spot in the lawn, get an expert
evaluation. Take a piece of sod that is half brown
grass and half green grass to your neighborhood
Petitti Garden Center, and our Lawn and Garden
experts will identify the problem and solution for
you free of charge.
Grubs are the sneakiest of insect pests. They feed
on your lawn’s roots from below the soil where
insecticides can not reach. They eat all summer
before doing enough damage to show up as brown
spots in late August or September. By then, you
already have a damaged lawn and large grubs
that are difficult to kill. Prevent grub sabotage
by applying Scotts Grub-Ex® or Bayer SeasonLong Grub Killer® in June. For organic control
of Japanese beetle larvae, a lawn grub you may
encounter, use Milky Spore Spreader Mix in June.
A Weed is a Plant out of Place
Should I Start Over?
Crabgrass is the bane of lawn-lovers everywhere,
but did you know that all crabgrass comes from
seed that sprouts in the spring? An application
of fertilizer with crabgrass preventer is the
first step in four-part fertilizer packages, and it
should be applied when forsythias are covered
with their yellow blooms. Scotts® fertilizers use
pendimethalin to kill the crabgrass seedling
when it first sprouts, and Espoma Organic® Weed
Preventer accomplishes the same thing with corn
gluten. Both of these products will also kill grass
seed, so do not apply them where you plan to plant
new grass. Scotts Step 1 For Seeding® contains
siduron, which will control crabgrass without
Unless your lawn is more than 50% undesirable
grasses and weeds, you do not need to start
over. Begin using the procedures and products
mentioned above, and you will soon eliminate any
problems and may then sow grass seed to fill in
bare or thin areas. If you need to start over, kill
off the entire lawn with Roundup or Espoma
Earth-tone® 4n1 Weed Control. In either case,
prepare the area to be seeded by coating with a
thin layer of topsoil, or by scratching the surface
with a rake. Scatter the new grass seed lightly
and evenly over the area and water thoroughly to
moisten the soil several inches deep. Now keep
the soil surface moist (when the soil turns light

ut down the drill – you don’t
need it! Instead, reach for your
gardening shears and make
your home’s value grow.
Studies done by GE Money last spring
show landscaping can increase a
home’s value by 15 percent, despite
today’s current recession. “Today’s
economic environment and slow housing
market may cause homeowners to
question whether improving their home
is a wise choice,” they say. “According to
studies spanning decades, the answer
is a resounding yes – especially when it
comes to outdoor remodeling.”

brown it needs water) until the new grass is well
up. Mow as needed, never taking off more than
one third of the blade at a time. Otherwise keep
off the new lawn area for three or four weeks.
A Cut Above
One of the easiest ways to keep your lawn at its
peak is to follow proper mowing practices. Do
not cut grass too short. This stresses the grass
plants, overheats and dries the soil, and provides
opportunities for weeds to invade. Mow at a
height of approximately 3 inches throughout
summer, and mow before it reaches 4½ inches
tall. Let the clippings lie on the lawn to return
moisture and nutrients to the soil. A dull lawn
mower blade leaves a jagged brown edge on the
grass, so sharpen it each spring and fall. Avoid
mowing the lawn when wet, but keep in mind
it is better to mow a wet lawn then to let it grow
too tall and have to cut off too much at once.
Get in the habit of keeping your lawn fed and
healthy, and you will prevent most problems that
frustrate your neighbor and yourself. Now the
grass will always be greener in your yard!

earned its right to be in our homes
and hearts, and its beauty should be
celebrated as long as possible.
The rose is as rich in history as it is
in fragrance and beauty. In fact, the rose has been
tracked throughout history dating back 35 million
years ago with a strong symbolism in Greek
Mythology and early Roman times. The petals,
leaves and fragrance have and are being used in
a variety of ways; for medicinal and relaxation
purposes and as an anti-aging aid, in teas, oils and
perfumes, to name just a few. However, no one can
deny the unmistaken beauty of this flower. If you
are one of the many who have tried planting roses
without luck, read this Top Picks Rose Guide to
help you enjoy a long flourishing season of growth.
Knock Out ® Roses
The best and hardiest of all of the rose varieties
available is the Knock Out® Rose. They are extremely
easy to grow and do not require special care, and
they thrive in almost every area of the country. In
addition, they are the most disease resistant rose on the
market. With stunning flower power and a generous
bloom cycle, they will continue until the first hard
frost, which is very important considering Cleveland’s
unpredictable weather patterns. And as if the news
could not get any better, all of the featured Knock Out®
Roses are black-spot resistant, drought tolerant and
self-cleaning so there is no need to deadhead. Besides
being stunning individually, this rose partners well
among shrubs, annuals and perennials in mixed beds
and borders.
Double Pink Knock Out ®
A favorite variety from year to
year. These full double flowers
are bubble gum pink in color
and are sure to perk up any
landscape. They are very stable
and unfazed by the heat.

ardening with companion
plants is a time-honored,
growing tradition. Ecofriendly and easy to do,
this practice encourages
happy, healthy plant
growth through the
interactions of one another. Companion planting
can accomplish a number of desired effects - such
as providing protection from insects and disease,
enhancing growth and harvest, and offering shade
through the use of coexisting plants. In the long
run, companion planting may also help you cut
costs on pesticide use and on your grocery bills.
The protective effect of companion planting pairs
herbs, flowers, vegetables and fruiting trees with
other plants that may ward off pests or diseasecausing organisms. For example, Marigolds have
a distinct fragrance and are a well-known repellent
of deer and whitefly, and many a gardener, as well.
They make excellent companions to tomatoes,
roses, peppers and cabbage. Dill is another
protective plant. It attracts beneficial insects that can
help in pollination, but will also consume pests like
aphids. Dill is great to plant near corn, lettuce and
onions, but is not recommended around carrots or
tomatoes. Garlic is not only a great repellent, but a
natural fungicide, too. It is touted to absorb sulfur,
a common component in disease control sprays and
is suggested for use around apple and pear trees,
cucumber, eggplant, tomatoes and celery.
Increased yield certainly has to do with the
protective effect above, but some plants grown
together just seem to taste and perform better. Basil
planted alongside tomatoes is a perfect and delicious
example of this quality. Basil also grows well with
oregano, another Italian essential, as well as cabbage,
beans, asparagus and petunias. Another great plant

to grow with any Nitrogen lover is beans. The beans
actually fix nitrogen from the air and change it into
a soil nutrient that strawberries, beets, corn, carrots,
potatoes and many more can use.
Another companion planting positive is that
some plants naturally have physical traits that help
them coexist with other plants. Native Americans
used this technique when they planted “The Three
Sisters”- corn, beans and squash. The corn, being
the tallest, would shade the beans and squash. The
beans would increase nitrogen for the other two as
mentioned above, and the squash would provide a
dense groundcover to reduce weeds and help retain
soil moisture. A simply perfect trio! This effect is
also evident with some tougher perennial shade
species like Hosta because they are shallow rooted
and are easily adaptable under large shade trees,
which tend to absorb all of their nutrients and water.
The opportunities to use plants in your own
gardens and landscapes to ensure a healthy
environment are endless. Doing your small
part to ‘create a greener world’ can be a fun,
imaginative way to learn more about your
ecosystem, while also getting more productivity
and bloom for your buck. With the right research
and combinations you will be able sit back, relax
and let nature run its course while bringing a
balanced ecosystem to your landscape.
