She strives to excite children, challenge their thinking, and encourage them to see patterns in the world to connect mathematics and all other subjects. She has children anxious to hear what is taught next, excited to collaborate toward a common goal, and still discussing the concepts she’s taught as they leave her room. She gives so much time to the M.A.T.H. Bowl team. She works with them after school 3-4 days per week and spends lunch recess with anyone who needs additional support. Sue Stan is a dedicated passionate, teacher who has a true love for academics and coaching students in mathematics education.” Byron Banta - Junior Division Academic Coach of The Year Delta Middle School, Muncie Academic Super Bowl Coach 20 years Academic Super Bowl Math Top 10 all 20 years 2002 & 2015 Academic Super Bowl Math State Champion Nominated by Kelly Brown, principal “Academic Super Bowl has been a passion of Mr. Banta’s since he became a coach about 20 years ago. His dedication to his team and to the competitions as a whole is incredible. He is never too busy to help out another coach and will often be the one solving problems, even if those problems are someone else’s responsibility. Mr. Banta has served as Host for both the Invitational and Area competitions. Without his knowledge of procedures and willingness to take on more than his share of the work, these competitions would not run as smoothly. The students recognize his passion for what he does as well. They appreciate the Oreos and milk always provided at his practices. Students are EXCITED when they have Academic Super Bowl practice with Mr. Banta. He takes the grueling work and long hours of studying and turns it into something the students look forward to and are motivated to do. ” Bob Exline - Senior Division Academic Coach of The Year Reitz Memorial High School, Evansville Academic Decathlon Coach 22 years Academic Super Bowl Coach 10 years 7 time Academic Decathlon State Champion Nominated by Laura Ackerman, Carol Exline, and Kristi Wetzel, co-coaches “This year mark’s Bob’s 22nd year coaching Academic Decathlon. Just finding the right group of students to comprise the team can be daunting. For each potential team member, Bob researches GPAs, standardized test scores, course loads, extra-curricular activities, etc. He speaks with teachers coaches, students, parents, as well as the potential team members, in hopes of putting together the most cohesive and competitive team possible. All the time and energy Bob puts into Academic Decathlon perfectly demonstrates to the team his competitive nature and his dedication. He leads by example and inspires students to do their best. Bob’s “can do” attitude rubs off on team members and has been instrumental to the success of the teams over the past two decades.” Department of Student Programs, 11025 East 25th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46229 www.iasp.org @INPrincipals Indiana Academic Decathlon Indiana Academic Spell Bowl Indiana Academic Super Bowl Indiana Cheer Championship 2 DSP News continued Content NEW! Please be sure to submit your roster before this deadline. Roster Forms for the Elementary Spell Bowl competition will be available on October 7, and will be due on October 28. NEW! Elementary Science Bowl The IASP Science Bowl contest is entering its 11th year. Participation is already at record setting levels, even though the entry deadline isn’t until November 4. As so many school are looking for ways to encourage scientific learning, we think the Science Bowl is a fantastic way to engage your students. We’d like to share some information about this program for 4th – 6th graders. Many schools are already enjoying the flexibility of participating in this online contest and the hands-on experience of performing a science experiment. How Science Bowl is SIMILAR to other IASP Competitions: - Study Guide and Standards Based - Topics Rotate Annually - Team Oriented Scoring - Awards Presented in 5 enrollment classifications How Science Bowl is DIFFERENT than other IASP Competitions: - Contest Participation Is Entirely Online: Blackboard technology is used for both practice questions and contest rounds. - Three Different Rounds: Team Round answering multiple choice questions as a group, Experiment Round answering questions regarding a common experiment conducted before the contest day, and an Individual Round where 4 students independently answer questions. - Three Day Testing Window: The three tests (30 minute maximum each) can be taken at any time, in any order, on any of the three competition days (January 26, 27, & 28, 2016). - In order to allow your building computer experts to be on hand, teams MAY choose to complete rounds during the school day if they wish. - Very Few Restrictions On Size of Team: Teams must have a minimum of 4 students on their team, but there is NO maximum number of students you are allowed to involve. This allows for a large number of students to be involved, especially in the experiment, thereby building an even greater knowledge base for this phase of the competition. A sample of the experiments used for the Sci ence Bowl contest the past 5 years is available online at www.iasp.org/pdf/ScienceBowlEx perimentExamples.pdf Additional information is available online by reading the Science Bowl Coaches Handbook www.iasp. org/pdf/coachhandbookscience.pdf, or by browsing the Science Bowl web page www.iasp.org/dsp/ academic/science/. All 2016 Study Guide Information and Experiment Guidelines will be announced during the Science Coach Webinar on November 10 (and posted online after that day). To sign up for the webinar, send a completed registration form found at www.iasp.org/pdf/conferenceelementaryregistration.pdf. To enter the contest, just check the box on your Membership-Participation Form www.iasp.org/pdf/ dspmembershipform.pdf, or contact our office if you’ve already submitted a form and would like to add a Science Bowl team. Last year’s event was a great start, and we hope that more teams will join us in this great cause this year! We have been trying to find ways to make things easier for coaches, since we know that time and resources are very limited during the fall. This year, instead of coordinating a single day collection event on contest day, we will be able to provide you with contact information for local food banks, that work with the Midwest Food Bank, which would be able to take all of your collected items. If you are interested in participating (and we hope that you ALL are!), please email Chris or Kyle and let us know!
